Elzie Harold Tingler, 68, of Big Springs, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 1995, at Parkview Nursing Home, Parkersburg, after an extended illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Elzie M. and Virginia E. Richards Tingler. He was a carpenter, a former Calhoun County school teacher, and worked at Steel Improvement & Forge Co., Cleveland, and Glen Haught & Sons Co., Smithville. He attended Old Chestnut Grove Methodist Church, Big Springs. Surviving are two sisters, Goldie Chappell of Mount Airy, N.C., and Sylvia Roberts of Nobe; two brothers, Paul Tingler and Forest Tingler, both of Big Springs; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Tingler. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Dallas Smith officiating. Burial was in Big Springs cemetery.

Claire L. Updegrave, 75, formerly of Chloe, died Wednesday, April 5, 1995, at her residence in Wilmington, Del. Surviving are her husband, Robert R. Updegrave; one son, Robert R. Updegrave of Chloe; two daughters, Carol Lewis of Newcastle, Del., and Cheryl Broomall of El Sobrante, Calif.; three brothers, Joseph Fry of Trucksville, Pa., William Fry of Linthincum Heights, Md., and Alfred Fry of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Marjorie Laufer of San Antonio, Tex., and Mildred Kenney of Baltimore; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. William "Bill" Vandale, 97, of Grantsville, died Friday, May 5, 1995, at St. Joseph's Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Len and Rosie Sakill Vandale. He was a farmer, a former teamster in the timber industry and a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Opal Wise Vandale; eight daughters, Madeline Goff of Parkersburg, Sally Goff and Bonnie Vandale, both of Spencer, Linda Kay Vandale and Barbara Norman, both of Grantsville, Corine Stottsbury of Caldwell, Helen Savage of Pomeroy, and Deloris Vandale, address unknown; five sons, Jeff Vandale and Fred Vandale, both of Spencer, Tommy Vandale and Jimmy Vandale, both of Grantsville, and Edward Vandale of Parkersburg; 32 grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Hoden Chapel Church cemetery, Roane County.
VANNOY, GERALDINE
Geraldine Vannoy, 65, of Hillcrest Nursing Home, Washington Court House, Ohio, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 1995, after an extended illness. She was born in Wood County, a daughter of the late Willis R. and Charity Sue Davis Vannoy. She was employed at Yonkers Sewing Factory and Misty Manufacturing for over 20 years. She was a 1949 graduate of Calhoun County High School and attended Salem College. She was a member of Camden Avenue Church of Christ. Surviving are one son, Larry Allen Vannoy of Parkersburg; one brother, Glen Vannoy of Cleveland; and one sister, Wilma Marene Vannoy of San Diego, Calif. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Alfred Hall officiating. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery North.
VAUGHAN, LLOYD C.
Lloyd Crowley Vaughan, 82, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 1995, at his daughter's residence in Dunbar after an extended illness. He was born in Bolivar, Tenn., a son of the late William C. and Margaret Crowley Vaughan. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received his bachelor's degree in agriculture from University of Tennessee and master's degree in agriculture from West Virginia University. He taught vocational agriculture at Calhoun County High School for 22 years and served as the county's assistant superintendent of schools for 11 years. He established a housing development near Grantsville at Pleasant Hill that includes the senior citizens facility Bramblewood Village. The State of West Virginia named Vaughan Road Community in his honor. He was a former Calhoun County commissioner and a Baptist. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Elva Wright Vaughan; one son, J. Michael Vaughan of Williamstown; three daughters, Susan Vaughan of Dunbar, Caroline Charonko of Charleston and Jeannie Tanner of Vienna; one sister, Elizabeth Clark of Ontario, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Boyd; four brothers; and four sisters. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. William Taylor officiating. Gladys Irene Wagoner, 69, of Spencer, died Wednesday, May 17, 1995, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late William and Eva Craddock Sampson. She was a homemaker and a member of Keffer United Methodist Church near Clover. Surviving are one daughter, Connie Nichols of Otto; three sons, Freddie Wagoner of Otto, Robert Wagoner of Spencer and David Wagoner of Statesville, N.C.; two brothers, Roscoe Sampson of South Carolina and Lovell Sampson of Grantsville; three half-brothers, Gerald Sampson, Darrell Sampson and Doyle Sampson, all of Grantsville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Edward Wagoner, in 1989; and two sons, George William Wagoner and Loren Edward Wagoner. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Danny Whited officiating. Burial was in Gibson cemetery, near Arnoldsburg.
WALDO, ROBERT KEENER
Robert Keener "Bob" Waldo, 86, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 1995, in Williamsburg, Pa., after a 3-month illness. He was born in Grantsville, son of the late Howard and Stella Keener Waldo. He served as a guard at W. Va. Penitentiary prior to WWII, served as an M.P. in WWII, and retired from police work in Newport News, Va., 20 years ago. He is survived by a daughter, Doris Jean Waldo Wyatt and husband John of Hampton, Va.; three grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; and a niece, Edith "Edie Lou" Waldo Butler of Georgetown, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Shanklin Waldo, in 1973; a brother, Howard "Bud" Waldo, in 1973; and a younger brother and sister in 1913. Graveside services and burial were held in Hampton Memorial Gardens, Hampton.

Carl Wallbrown, Sr., 87, of Akron, Ohio, died Monday, July 31, 1995. He was born in Arnoldsburg, the son of the late W.H. and Grace Price Wallbrown. He was a retired employee of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. He resided in the Akron area for 42 years. Surviving are two sons, Carl, Jr., and Gerald, both of Akron; two brothers, Dale of Arnoldsburg and Bernard of Spencer; three sisters, Hazel Brannon and Pearl King, both of Arnoldsburg, and Eula Hall of Spencer; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Elizabeth Knoble Wallbrown, in 1992. Services were held at Hopkins and Lawver Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Harold D. Bradley officiating. Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park Mausoleum, Akron.

He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late John and Ocie Parsons Wallbrown. He was a retired sawmill operator, a farmer, and a Methodist. Surviving are two daughters, Marie McKown of Arnoldsburg and Anna Mae Lowe of Spencer; two sisters, Ethel Webb of Spencer and Virgie Batten of Ohio; 20 granchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 13 step- grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and 16 step-great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dottie Shaffer Wallbrown; one son, Oral Rex Wallbrown; one daughter, Bernice Wallbrown; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; three sisters; and three brothers. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating. Burial was in Road Run cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

Audrey Mae Settle Walter, 59, of Guttenberg, Iowa, died Friday, June 9, 1995, at her home following an extended illness. She was a daughter of the late Otho and Goldie Campbell Settle. She graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1954 and served three years in the U.S. Navy. She was a member of Guttenberg Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband, Edwin Walter; four sons, Joe of Las Vegas, Nev., and Brian, Barth and Craig of Guttenburg; two daughters, Sarah Sheelah of Andrew, Iowa, and Beth Wu of Iowa City, Iowa; three sisters, Idell Minney and Aretta Schoolcraft of Stumptown and Ona Paxton of Spencer; six brothers, Lee, Virgle, Seymour, Charles and Ben, all of Parkersburg, and George of Guttenberg. She was preceded in death by a son, a sister, and a brother. Services and burial were in Guttenburg.
