CARPER, OLETA

Oleta Carper, 91, of Spencer, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 1994, at Ravenswood Care Center, Ravenswood. She was born in Island Run, Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Charles and Gertrude Hosey Miller. She was a Glenville State College graduate and taught school at Spencer Elementary for nearly 20 years. She rode horseback to and taught in several one-room schools in Calhoun and Roane counties. After retirement, she taught at Frozen Camp Grade School in Jackson County, and attended Spencer Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are one son, Millard Carper of Reno; one sister, Ruth Hoskins of Stuart, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Jeremiah Carper, Ryan Carper, and Miranda Carper, all of Reno. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Carper; one infant daughter; one sister, Josephine Long Hammet; and one brother, Thurl M. Miller. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Sinnett-Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Edward Casey and Rev. Russell Crawford officiating, and burial in Spencer Memorial cemetery.

CART, AMY ODESSA

Amy Odessa Cart, 86, of Chloe, died Sunday, April 10, 1994, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Matthew and Nancy Murphy West. She was a homemaker and a member of Mud Fork Union Church. Surviving are one daughter, Rosalie Cadle of Wadsworth, Ohio; four sisters, Osena Truman of Big Otter, Arella Jarvis of Sissonville, Mattie Boggs and Amma McGraw of Spencer; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cart; and two brothers, Seldon West and Alexander West. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Mud Fork Union Church, Chloe, with Rev. Darius Arnold officiating, and burial to be in Coen cemetery, Nebo.

CHEESBREW, JOHN JR.

John R. Cheesbrew, Jr., 67, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Jan 12, 1994, on Rt. 5 west of Grantsville from injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was born in Beckwith, Raleigh County, a son of the late John R. and Lauzie Arthur Cheesbrew, Sr. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from Cabot Corp. after 27 years of service. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Grantsville, where he served as a member of the Board of Deacons and Board of Trustees and was a song leader. He was a former Sunday School superintendent. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Marie Sturm Cheesbrew; four daughters, Connie Raber of Little Hocking, Pat Skidmore of Washington, Jennifer Connolly of Grantsville, and Cheryl Cheesbrew of Buckhannon; one son, Mike Cheesbrew of Camp Lajune, N.C.; one sister, Jean Horsnyder of Columbus; two brothers, Jim Cheesbrew of Columbus and Bill Cheesbrew of Beckley; six grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. Services were held at First Baptist Church, Grantsville, with Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem cemetery.

ALFRED, CORA

Cora Alfred, 81, of Rosedale, died Saturday, May 21, 1994, at her daughter's residence after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Sally Parsons Butler. She was a 1985 Calhoun County Belle. She was a member of Linden Order of Eastern Star, Minnora Rebekah Lodge, Orma/Arnoldsburg Home Extension Club, and Orma United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Lenora Eggeman of Orville, Ohio, and Carolyn Miller of Rosedale; three brothers, Doy Butler of Chloe, Milton "Dolen" Butler of Munroe Falls, Ohio, and Nolen Butler of Naples, Fla.; three sisters, Chloe Alfred of Arnoldsburg, Flava Fisher of Cottageville, and Floda Dulaney of Naples; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Johnie Alfred; one daughter; one grandson; two brothers; and two sisters. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks and Rev. Burdene Blosser officiating. Burial was in Orma cemetery.

ANDERSON, EDGAR

Edgar Vance Anderson, 83, of Spencer, died Saturday, Apr. 30, 1994, in a farming accident on his Calhoun County farm. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Eliza E. and Arminda Starcher Anderson. He retired from Carbon Carbide Co., Alloy. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Kingsbury Anderson; two daughters, Hazeline Anderson of Spencer and Wilma Jean Monroe of Middlebourne; three brothers, Shade Anderson of White Sulpher Springs, Woodrow W. Anderson of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Paul Anderson of Dexter, Ohio; two sisters, Erma Kiplinger of Barberton, Ohio, and Hettie Wallace of Akron, Ohio; and four grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Larry Haught officiating. Burial was in Gibson cemetery.

ARNOLD, ALICE

Alice Arnold, 83, of Orma, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1994, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late William and Ocie Jarvis Lamb. She was a member of Walnut Church of Chloe. Surviving are three sons, Robert Fulks of Akron, Ohio, Harold Fulks of Millstone, and Stanley Arnold of Petersburg, Va.; four daughters, Betty Metz of Orma, Glenna Perkins of Chloe, Emogene King of Cleveland, and Nellie Tiller of Streetsboro, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five step- great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Fulks, in 1944; and her second husband, John Arnold, in 1992. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Minnora cemetery.

ARTHUR, JESSIE E.

Jessie E. Arthur, 81, of Arnoldsburg, died Monday, June 13, 1994, at Roane General Hospital, after an extended illness. She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Henry W. Ward and Rosa Argabrite Ward McKown. She was a homemaker, and a former employee of Cambell's Inn and Spencer VFW. She attended Assembly of God, Spencer. Surviving are two sons, Douglas Mack Arthur of Arnoldsburg and Rev. William Vernon Arthur of Spencer; two daughters, Linda Lou Arthur of Spencer and Brenda Sue McKown of Arnoldsburg; one half-brother, Charles W. McKown of Hazel Park, Mich.; one half-sister, Frances Endrizzi of Elyria, Ohio; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ralph Arthur, Sr.; one son, Charles Ralph Arthur, Jr.; one daughter, Rosalee Arthur; stepfather, Grant McKown; three sisters; and one half-brother. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Sinnett-Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Sam Haskins officiating, and burial in Spencer Memorial cemetery, Spencer.

ASH, DESSIE

Dessie Ash, 75, of Spencer, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 1994, at Roane General Hospital, Spencer, after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Herbert and Lucy Fowler Price. She was a homemaker and attended Leatherbark Community Church near Arnoldsburg. Surviving are her husband, Glennis Ash; one daughter, Loretta Russell of Clover; two sons, Lawrence Ash and Bob Ash, both of Spencer; one sister, Wanda Steinbrunner of Charleston; four brothers, Claude Price, Leon Price and John Price, all of Barberton, Ohio, and Warder Price of Tennessee; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven sisters and two brothers. Services were held at Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating. Burial was in Clover cemetery, near Spencer.

ATKINSON, NANCY J.

Nancy Jane Atkinson, 86, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, June 29, 1994, at Ohio Pythian Sisters Home, Medina, Ohio, after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Dudley and Mollie Kelley Lutz. She was a member of the Calhoun County Senior Citizens, Royal Neighbors of America, and First Baptist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are one son, Richard "Steve" Atkinson of Brunswick, Ohio; and one brother, David Lutz of Key Largo, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orin Atkinson; one son, Orin "Pete" Atkinson; one brother, Tommy Lutz; and two sisters, Pauline Sturm and Mary Waldo. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem cemetery, Grantsville.

BAILEY, EMERSON

Emerson Bailey, 90, of Minnora, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 1994, at Roane General Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Floyd and Mary Jarvis Bailey. He was a farmer. Surviving are six daughters, Janice Henderson of Akron, Darie Parsons of Wooster, Ohio, Velma Conner of New Oxford, Pa., Stella McCumbers of Mt. Zion, Ocie Helmick of Nicut and Virginia Lowry of Orrville, Ohio; three sons, Adderson Bailey of Orrville, Eugene Bailey of Minnora and Steven Bailey of Granville, Ohio; 27 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta Pearl Keener Bailey; and one daughter, Arlene Walker. Services were held at Minnora United Methodist Church with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Siers cemetery, Minnora.

BAILEY, ORIS W.

Oris W. Bailey, 91, of Arnoldsburg, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 1994, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg, following a long illness. He was born in Leatherbark, a son of the late Carmine and Rosa Frazure Bailey. He was a member of the Calhoun County Board of Education for 12 years, and was a member of Eureka Lodge 40 AF&AM at Grantsville, Order of Eastern Star, and Stoney Point United Methodist Church, Arnoldsburg. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Vera Hickman Bailey; one son, Gary Bailey of Vienna; one daughter, Wilma Siers of Parkersburg; one brother, Walter C. Bailey of Spencer; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Glendon McKee and Kevin Siers officiating. Burial was in Gibson cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

WISE, GEORGE CECIL

George Cecil Wise, 82, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1994, at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was born in Creston, a son of the late Robert and Lummi Parks Wise. He was retired from St. Clair's Auto Supply where he worked as a machinist. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Cheuvront Wise; two daughters, Janet Davis of Parkersburg and Carolyn Guinn of Williamstown; two stepsons, Vance Grimm of Parkersburg and Harold Grimm of Pennsylvania; one stepdaughter, Carmen Queen of Parkersburg; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Sherman Wise and Junior Wise, both of Grantsville; and three sisters, Irene Henthrone of Spencer and Opal Vandale and Arzona Wise, both of Grantsville. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Ralph Burnette officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

WITTE, DAVID D.

David D. Witte, 53, of Tampa, Fla., died Wednesday, June 29, 1994, at home. He was a native of Millstone and moved to Tampa in 1963 from Huntington. He retired last year from GTE Network Planning, and was an Air Force veteran and a Baptist. He is survived by his mother, Marie L. White of Tampa; a brother, Rev. Charles L., Sr., of Bethany, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Henderson Blvd. Chapel, with Rev. Howard D. Thompson officiating. Burial was in Serenity Gardens cemetery, Largo, Fla.

WIX, PEGGY J.

Peggy J. Wix, 56, of Annamoriah, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 1994, at her residence after a brief illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late John and Mable Boice Arthur. She was a member of Snyder Chapel Community Church, Annamoriah. Surviving are her husband, Carl Wix; one daughter, Linda Davis of Elizabeth; one son, Nick Davis of Annamoriah; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons and one brother. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Lewis Villers and Rev. William D. Stutler officiating. Burial was in Snyder Chapel cemetery, Annamoriah.
