HARTSHORN, DAYTON

Dayton Hartshorn, 71, Hyattsville, Md., formerly of Grantsville, died Thursday, May 26, 1994, at his residence after a brief illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Everett and Josie Sturm Hartshorn. He was a 1941 Calhoun High School graduate, and was retired from Bell Telephone Co. of Maryland. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Lorranie Robinson Hartshorn; two daughters, Darlene Reichard of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Norma Webber of Charlotte Hall, Md.; one son, Stephen P. Hartshorn of Hyattsville; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Ernest Hartshorn, Glen Hartshorn and Boyd Hartshorn, all of Grantsville, and Earl Hartshorn of Bolt, W. Va.; one sister, Elah Gainer of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Mt. Zion cemetery, with graveside visitation. Francis Gasch's Sons Funeral Home, Hyattsville, handled arrangements.

HATFIELD, OSIE J.

Osie J. Hatfield, 91, of Harrisville, formerly of Grantsville, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 1994, at Millsboro Nursing Home, Millsboro, Del. She was born in Ritchie County, a daughter of the late Virgil and Lizzie Border Turner. She was a 50-year member of Harrisville Baptist Church. Surviving are four sons, Wayne Hatfield of South Hills, Calif., Henry Hatfield of Grafton, James Hatfield of Parkersburg, and Harold "Bill" Hatfield of Millsboro; one daughter, Eunice McKinley of Salsburg, Md.; one sister, Mary Deem of Parkersburg; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell W. Hatfield; and two brothers. Services were held at Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, with Rev. Don Flanigan officiating. Burial was in Odd Fellows cemetery, Harrisville.

ERMA RUTH HAYES

Erma Ruth Hayes, 65, of Grove City, Ohio died Wednesday, November 2, 1994, at her home following an extended illness. She was born February 3, 1929 in Gilmer County, the daughter of Atha Collins Smith Sayre of Springfield, Ohio and the late Clifford Kinley Smith. She was retired from Capital Machine Co., in Columbus, Ohio and was a member of Columbus First Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Paul D. Hayes; two daughters, Naomi (Mrs. Ron) Puttick and Pauletta (Mrs. Roger) Singell, both of Columbus; grandchildren, Erin Puttick, Devin Puttick and Matthew Singell of Columbus; sisters, Ellouise Pritchett of Washington, Blenda George of Kentucky, and Anita Welch of Mechanicsburg, Ohio; stepfather, Bert Sayre of Springfield, Ohio; stepbrothers, Nick Sayre of California, and Bill Sayre of Springfield; many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, sisters-in- law, brothers-in-law and friends, including an aunt, Hazel Knotts, of Stumptown. Services were held at Columbus First Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Edwin Hayes officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

HAYNES, LILLIE

Lillie Haynes, 83, of Grantsville, died Sunday, Apr. 17, 1994, at her home after an extended illness. She was born in Ritchie County, a daughter of the late O. A. and Nora Heck Kerns. She was a homemaker and belonged to Grantsville Order of Eastern Star and North Fork Baptist Church, Ritchie County. Surviving are two sons, Voras Haynes of Elkins and Vearl Haynes of Springerville, Ariz.; a sister, Mary Layfield of Harrisville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Haynes; two infant daughters; a brother, Arthur Kerns; and two sisters, Cora Grandstaff and Mable Hickman. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Mike Worf officiating. Burial was in Harrisville IOOF cemetery, Harrisville.

HEDGES, JULIA JARVIS

Julia Jarvis Hedges, 88, formerly of Auburn, died Wednesday, Mar. 9, 1994, at The Willows Nursing Home, Parkersburg. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late French and Sarah Cottrell Jarvis. She was a homemaker and a member of Auburn United Methodist Church. Surviving are one son, Dale Hedges of Massillon, Ohio; two daughters, Merle Kiminsky of Fort Myers, Fla., and Zelma Cox of Hagerstown, Md.; one brother, Elmer Jarvis of Wilsie; four sisters, Ruby Carr of Frametown, Locie Carr of New York, Erma Nichols of North Carolina and Bessie Morris of Stumptown; nine grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Benjamin Hedges, in 1967; one son; four sisters; and three brothers. Services were held at Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, with Rev. John Frum officiating. Burial was in Cooper cemetery, Creston.

HEINEY, KATHRYN W.

Kathryn W. Heiney, 60, of Grantsville, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 1994, at Calhoun General Hospital after an apparent heart attack. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late George and Daisy Mathews Whipkey. She was a retired employee of the Calhoun County Board of Education, and was a member of Enon Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Charles Heiney; two daughters, Patricia Leach of Owasso, Okla., and Brenda Johnson of Princeton; two sons, Kenneth Heiney and Charles Heiney, Jr., both of Grantsville; one brother, Richard Whipkey of Parkersburg; two sisters, Sue Davis of Vienna and Lois Welch of Hebron, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Whipkey and Don Whipkey. Services were scheduled at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at Enon Baptist Church, with Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating, and burial to be in Bethlehem cemetery, Grantsville.

HERSMAN, RELDA

Relda Hersman, 71, of Belpre, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 1994, at Guernsey Memorial Hospital, Cambridge, Ohio, after a brief Illness. She was born in Braxton County, a daughter of the late McLean and Allie Whytsell Hall. She had spent her early life in Calhoun County and was a resident of Belpre for 20 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Belpre. Surviving are three sons, Nelson Hersman of Marietta, Ronzel Hersman of Long Branch, N.J., and Romeo Hersman, Jr., of Columbus, Ohio; three daughters, Charlene Niggenmeyer of Guysville, Ohio, Judy Hersman of Pensacola, Fla., and Becky Carpenter of Belpre; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lonzo Hall of Sheffield, Ohio, and Paul Hall of Canal Fulton, Ohio; and four sisters, Zela Riggs and Evelyn Duley, both of Vienna, and Arlene McDonald of Coolville, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Romeo Hersman, Sr., in 1952; one brother; one daughter, Ruby Kapteina; and one grandson, Dale Hersman. Services were held at Spencer Funeral Home, Belpre, with Rev. Paul Knierim officiating. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery, Belpre.

HIGGINBOTHAM, HOLLIS M.

Hollis M. Higginbotham, 82, of Sand Ridge, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 1994, at Roane General Hospital, after an extended illness. He was born in Putnam County, a son of the late Simon M. and Cora Belle Jeffreys Higginbotham. He owned and operated a trucking company at Sand Ridge for many years. He was a member of Albert's Chapel United Methodist Church, Sand Ridge, where he was adult class leader and superintendent. Surviving are three sons, Paul D. Higginbotham of Newton, N. Burl Higginbotham of Terre Haute, Ind., and Richard M. Higginbotham of Doylestown, Ohio; one daughter, Irene H. Bradshaw of Nesconset, N. Y.; one brother, Frank Higginbotham of Belle; one sister, Ella Rutledge of Dunbar; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Greta V. Higginbotham, in 1993. Services were at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Glendon McKee, Rev. John Powell, and Rev. Stanley Epling officiating. Burial was in Lynch cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

HOPKINS, JANET M.

Janet M. Hopkins, 52, of Creston, died Tuesday, May 31, 1994, near Creston of injuries sustained in a car accident. She was born in Russett, a daughter of the late Thomas and Glenna Leone Fogle Hartshorn. She was a 19-year resident of Wirt County and was employed as a home aide for Wirt County Committee on Aging and Family Services. She was a former employee of Wirt Inflatable Specialists, Elizabeth. She was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping and bluegrass music. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Donald Hopkins; three daughters, Rhonda "Sherry" Bailey of Cottageville, Johnna Laughlin of Pettyville and Brenda Potts of Parkersburg; one brother, Bobby Hartshorn of Glenville; one sister, Anita Vannoy of Russett; two grandsons; and two granddaughters. Services were held at Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Rev. Raymond D. Ray officiating. Burial was in Mount Pleasant cemetery, Groundhog, near Creston.

HOPKINS, JONATHAN D.

Jonathan Depugh Hopkins, 75, of Grantsville, died Thursday, May 26, 1994, at St. Joseph's Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Creston, a son the the late Jonathan D. and Melissa Headley Hopkins. He was retired from Patterson-Leach Fabricators, Cleveland. He attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church and was a former member of the Grantsville Lions Club. Surviving are one granddaughter, Cindy Miller of Creston; and one brother, William Hopkins of Santa Clara, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Hopkins, in 1948; two daughters, Ruby Hopkins and Judy Brooks; and two grandsons. Services were held at Matheny-Pomroy Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Rev. Delmas Stutler officiating. Burial was in Saunders cemetery, Calhoun County.

HUFFMAN, DELPHIA

Delphia Parsons Huffman, 68, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Big Bend, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 1994, at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond, after an extended illness. She was born at Beech, a daughter of the late Andy and Olive Butler Parsons. She retired from B.F. Goodrich Co., Grantsville, and was a member of Enon Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Robert Allen Huffman of Gloucester, Mass., and Ronald Leo Huffman of Big Bend; a daughter, Sherry L. Richards of Richmond; a foster daughter, Pat Hand of Gloucester; two brothers, Orlando Parsons of Glenville and Ernest Parsons of Spencer; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers; and a sister. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Kevin Church officiating, and burial to be in Orma U.M. Church cemetery.

HUGHES, JERNELDA

Jernelda "Jerry" Hughes, 60, of Windham, Ohio, died at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Youngstown, Ohio. Born in Grantsville, she was the daughter of George and Lorene (Wilson) Collins. She worked as a waitress and cashier for Marriott and Howard Johnson's. She attended Windham Bible Church and enjoyed crocheting. Survivors include her husband, Roy L., whom she married Oct. 27, 1979; three sons, Roger Tingler, Ronald Tingler and Randy Tingler, all of Windham; two daughters, Cheryl Apthorpe of Windham and Sandra Ellwood of Niles; a stepson, Brian E. Hughes of Selma, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Linda L. Leyman of Windham and Teresa H. Pyatte of Ravenna; seven grandchildren; and eight stepgrandchildren. Services were held at Windham Bible Church. Burial was in Windham Township cemetery. Memorial may be made to Windham Bible Church.

HUNT, ROBERT C.

Robert Charles Hunt, 58, of Elizabeth, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 1994, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Charles and Erma Anderson Hunt. He retired from Local Union 132 as an operating engineer. He was a member of AARP and Charleston American Legion Post 200. He attended Landmark Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lois E. Clyde Hunt; four sons, Robert Wayne Hunt and Ryan Hunt, both of Parkersburg, Russell Hunt of Elizabeth and Daniel W. Hunt of Baltimore; three daughters, Carolyn Lamp of Elizabeth, Brenda Schebe of Rockport and Crystal Hunt of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; three brothers, Lowell T. Hunt of Palestine, Jesse Hunt of Maryland and James Hunt of Kentucky; and two sisters, Juanita Armstrong and Jean Royston, both of Denton, Md. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. David Freshour officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

JARVIS, ROLPHA J.

Rolpha J. Jarvis, 88, of Grantsville, died Sunday, May 8, 1994, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg, after an extended illness. He was born in Gilmer County, a son of the late Lewis and Hannah Shock Jarvis. He was a retired carpenter, and a member and former Sunday School teacher at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Madge Parsons Jarvis, and one brother, Rubin Jarvis of Belpre. He was preceded in death by one son, Blaine Jarvis; one brother, Otto Jarvis; and one sister, Cina Francis. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating, and burial in Mt. Zion cemetery.
