SALOMONE, MILDRED BUSH

Mildred Bush Salomone of Edgewater, Md., died of a heart condition, Nov. 14, 1993, at Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, Fla. Born in Minnora, she attended high school and business college and worked for the Treasury Dept. in Washington, D.C., during World War II. A homemaker, she was a charter member of Loch Haven Garden Club, an active golfer and club chairperson at Annapolis Golf and Country Club. She was also a member of Cypress Creek Country Club, Boynton Beach. She also enjoyed painting oils and was a member of Arts Club of Boynton. Surviving are her husband, Jules Salomone; one stepdaughter, Joan Slater of Arlington, Va.; one stepson, William Salomone of Carlisle, Pa.; four step-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Propst of Zephyr Hills, Fla., and a brother, Donald Bush of Grantsville. No formal services were held.

SAMPSON, ASTIN PAUL

Astin Paul Sampson, 43, of Orma, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1994, at his residence after a brief illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of Mary E. Lambert Sampson of Massillon, Ohio, and the late George Sampson. He was employed by Ronald Lane Pipeline Construction Co., Arnoldsburg. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Janetta Cummings Sampson; one stepdaughter, Lynn Hicks of Orma; two stepsons, Michael Hicks of Millstone and Timothy Hicks of Orma; four sisters, Carol Majors of Elyria, Ohio, Margaret McClain and Jean Sampson, both of Massillon, and Lois Fink of Canton; and one stepgrandaughter. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother. Services were held by Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Orma United Methodist Church cemetery.

SAMPSON, BERNICE

Bernice Sampson, 72, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, April 5, 1994, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Ferrell and Jossie Kerby Sampson. She had retired from the housekeeping department of Calhoun General Hospital. Surviving are one son, Lyle Sampson of Mineral Wells; four daughters, Barbara Dobbins of Cleveland, Joanne Brannon, Beverly Ford and Sharon Stump, all of Grantsville; one brother, Leon Sampson of Grantsville; five sisters, Jean Plant and Katheryn Baker, both of Grantsville, Ullinee Falb and Ettalean Kerby, both of Mt. Zion, and Rose Husk of Vienna; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roma E. Sampson, in 1988; two infant sons; two brothers; and five sisters. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Gibson cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

SAUNDERS, DAVID D. SR.

David D. Saunders, Sr., 54, of Beverly, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 1994, at his daughter's residence in Marietta after an extended illness. He was born in Big Bend, a son of the late Howard and Nona Lewis Saunders. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a former carpenter. He attended Brooksville Baptist Church, Big Bend. Surviving are four daughters, Cathy Douthitt, Veronica Kirkpatrick and Sabrina Saunders, all of Marietta, and Betty Seevers of Reno; three sons, Duane Saunders of Newport, Brian Saunders of Beverly, and Darin Saunders of Marietta; one sister, Erma Wilson of Phoenix, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem cemetery, Grantsville.

SCHWENDIMAN, MYRTLE MOSS

Myrtle Moss Schwendiman, 94, of Morning View Care Center, New Philadelphia, Oh., died Friday, Apr. 1, 1994, in Union Hospital, Dover, Oh., after a brief illness. She was born in Mud Fork, daughter of the late William Thomas and Lydia Belle Brannon Moss. She was a retired licensed practical nurse. In 1969 she organized Golden Circle of Gnadenhutten, Oh. Her motto in life was, "Always help older people." Survivors include two step-daughters; one brother, Greely A. Moss of Mineral City, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell Schwendiman in 1973; one sister; and three brothers. Services were held at Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home, New Philadelphia, with Rev. Lester Stephens officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia.

SEARS, FRANK A.

Frank A. Sears, 82, of Orma, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1994, at Roane General Hospital, after an extended illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Burley and Savannah White Sears. He was a U.S. veteran of World War II and a former merchant at Arnoldsburg, Stinson, and Chloe. He was employed by W. Va. Dept. of Highways for many years and retired from Spencer State Hospital. He was a member of Minnora IOOF Lodge 246 and Minnora United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Marks Sears; and one brother, Clyde Sears of Chloe. He was preceded in death by one son, Roy Sears, five brothers; and two sisters. Services were held at Minnora United Methodist Church, with Rev. Roger Flesher officiating. Burial was in Minnora cemetery.

SEARS, WILLIAM O.

William O. Sears, 75, of Clay County, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1994, at CAMC General Division, Charleston, after an extended illness. He was born in Clay County, a son of the late Albert and Ocie Sears. He was retired from Union Carbide Co., South Charleston, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Cosdorph Sears; four daughters, Alicia Sears of the home, Loretia Price of Granburg, Texas, Cheryl Stidham and Brenda Stidham, both of Nitro; four sons, Gary Sears of St. Albans; Michael Sears of Chloe, Arland Sears and William Sears, Jr., both of Florida; one sister, Dora Sampson of Chloe; one stepdaughter, Becky Ramer of St. Albans; two stepsons, Mervin Henson of St. Albans and Dinnis Henson of Nitro; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Services were held at Nebo Baptist Church, with Rev. Donald Dawson officiating. Burial was in Sears cemetery, Nebo, with VFW graveside rites.

SHAFFER, FORD

Ford Shaffer, 81, of Chloe, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 1994, at CAMC General Division of Charleston, following a short illness. He was born in Calhoun County, son of the late John and Caroline Stanley Shaffer. He was a member of IOOF Lodge #246 of Minnora and was retired from W. Va. Deptartment of Highways. Survivors include one son, Elmer Dean Shaffer of Tallmadge, Ohio; two granddaughters, Paula Boggs of Arnoldsburg and Melissa Shaffer of Talmadge; and four special friends, Mike and Jean Stump of Chloe and Ernest and Beulah Coffey of Chloe. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Minnora cemetery, Minnora.

SHAFFER, ODESSA P.

Odessa Pearl Shaffer, 94, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 1994, at Calhoun General Hospital, after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Hamilton and Sarah Beckner Connolly. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are two sons, Eugene Shaffer of Grantsville and James Shaffer of Belle; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charter Shaffer, and three sons, Darrell Shaffer, Melvin Connolly, and Charles Shaffer. Services were scheduled on Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with burial in Mt. Zion cemetery.

SHIMER, HOWARD

Howard Shimer, 94, of Fairmont, died Wednesday, July 27, 1994, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born in Annamoriah, a son of the late Sherman Smith and Mary Catherine Hayes Shimer. He worked all his life with the B&O Railroad. He was a member of Hoult United Methodist Church and of Brotherhood of Firemen and Oilers. Survivors include two step-sons, Richard Woody of Fairmont and Warren "Bud" Woody of Monumental; two step-daughters, Genevieve Stewart and Judy Phillips, both of Fairmont; two brothers, Ernest Shimer of Creston and James Shimer of Hesperia, Calif.; two sisters, Ethel Coffman of Beverly and Evelyn Bowman of Fairmont; 12 step- grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three wives: Virginia Mullens Shimer, Della Stutler Shimer, and Vera Woody Shimer; one step-daughter, Mary Woody Ice; two brothers, Earl Shimer, who died in infancy, and Harvey Shimer; and two sisters, Myrtle Shimer Villers and Minnie Shimer Davis. Services were held at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home with Rev. Helen Oates officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery.

SIERS, OPAL COTTRELL

Opal Cottrell Rush Siers, 77, of Minnora, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 1994, at St. Joseph's Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late William and Tilta Marks Cottrell. She was a Protestant. Surviving are her fiancee, Ottice Miller; four daughters, Naomi Jean Rush of Minnora, Emogene Blosser of Parkersburg, Mary Fields of Gassaway and Linda Winters of Newark, Ohio; three sons, Clarence Rush of Chloe, Dorse Rush and William Rush, both of Minnora; three sisters, Zella Roupe of Stumptown, Goldie Rush of Minnora and Effie Mae Wallbrown of Sand Ridge; six brothers, Shirley Cottrell and Guy Cottrell, both of North Grove, Ind., Cecil Cottrell of Reedy, Ernest Cottrell of Little Hocking, Rex Cottrell of Orma and Clarence Cottrell of Sand Ridge; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Rush; three sons; one daughter; and two sisters. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Earl Cayton officiating. Burial was in Minnora cemetery.

SLIDER, NETTIE

Nettie Starcher Slider, 88, of Parkersburg, formerly of Calhoun County, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 1994, at Worthington Manor Nursing Home, after an extended illness. She was born in Arnoldsburg, a daughter of the late Joseph Edwin and Lydia Kirby Starcher. She was a teacher in several Calhoun County schools and the principal of Millstone School. She was a Methodist and enjoyed cooking and canning. Surviving are one sister, Edna Cooper of Spencer, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Joseph "Bill" Sllider, in 1988; five sisters, Eva Cain, Julia Cooper Tucker, Lula Thomas, Lona Bower and Bernice Smith; and four brothers, Thurman Starcher, Frederick Starcher, Wesley Starcher and Edwin Starcher. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Joy Butcher Winfree officiating. Burial was in Starcher cemetery near Arnoldsburg.

SLIDER, SOLOMON J.

Solomon J. Slider, 93, of Belpre, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 1994, at his home. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late John and Elizabeth Starcher Slider. He retired from Universal Glass Co. and was a member of Dads of Foreign Service Veterans, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and the Peoples Church, Boaz. Surviving are a son, Bernard V. Slider of Cuyahoga Falls; a stepson, Paul Smith of Washington; a stepdaughter, Jessie Johnson of Parkersburg; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Slider; six sons; and two brothers. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, and burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

SMITH, ARLEN E.

Arlen E. Smith, 90, of Elba, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 1994, at Marietta Convalescent Center after an extended illness. He was born in Normantown, a son of the late Floyd and Emma Moore Smith. He was retired from Wells Services, Inc., of Charleston and attended Greenlee United Methodist Church, Charleston. Surviving are one son, Roy Smith of Charleston; two daughters, Geraldine Tingler of Big Springs and Kathryn Smith Moss of Rittman, Ohio; two brothers, Hill Smith of Elba and Charles Smith of Tennessee; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Bennett Smith, in 1982; and four daughters, Mildred Smith, Mary Lou Smith, Carolyn Smith, and Dorothy Carpenter. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Bethlehem cemetery.
