Callie Mae Dial

Callie Mae Barton Dial, 72, of Canebrake, WV, died July 20, 2004 at Carilion New River Valley Hospital in Radford.

Born August 10, 1931 in McDowell County, WV, she was a daughter of Dora Price Sparks of Warriormine, WV, and the late Edward Sparks.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two sons, Wiley Barton and Vernon William Barton, Jr.; one daughter, Mildred Barton; one brother, Shirley Sparks; and one sister, Shirlene Bowman.

Additional survivors: husband, Gerald L. Dial; sons, Floyd D. Barton and Racheal of Lin, NC, James Barton and Martha of Goshen, IN, Sonny Barton and Lena of Vallscreek, WV, Samuel Barton and Margie of Jewell Ridge, Christopher Dial and Amanda of Kentucky; daughters, Hellen Robinson of Stafford, Mary Perkins and Marvin of Vallscreek, Norma Harmon and Gene of Amonate, Bessie Perkins and Otis of Warriormine, Angela Dial and Danny of Berwind, WV; brothers, William Sparks of Tazewell, Vernon Sparks and James Sparks, both of Warriormine, Andy Sparks and Hubert Sparks, both of War, WV; sister, Frances Thomas of War; special family members, Gerry and Brenda Barton of Vallscreek, Grady Barton and family; special friend, Shirley Keller of Berwind; 34 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and two additional great grandchildren expected soon.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. July 24 at the Hartwell Church of God with the Rev. Wilmer Muncy and Lois Patterson officiating.

Burial followed at the Perkins cemetery on Whittaker Ridge in McDowell County.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Lettie L. Kinder

Lettie Lucille Kinder, 72, of Axton, VA, formerly of Bandy, died July 12, 2004 at her home following a lengthy illness.

Born in McDowell County, WV, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mattie Jessie Brewster Sparks, both Tazewell County natives.

She made her home in the Bandy area most of her life before moving to Axton four years ago and was a member of the Dry Fork Assembly of God Church.

She was a 1950 graduate of Richlands High School and Clinch Valley Clinic School of Nursing. She was a retired LPN with the Clinch Valley Clinic Hospital and Heritage Hall Nursing Home at Tazewell.

She was a member of the Bluefield Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #102, the White Shrine of Bluefield, the Richlands Rebekah Lodge #62, the Herbert L. Kent LAPM #3 of Abingdon, and a life member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nealie Kinder. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughters, Bonny Ward of Bassett, Darlene Simpkins and husband, Albert, of Axton; grandchildren, Ross McNeil Coleman, Chadwick Jessee Ward, Dustin Adam Ward, Jessica Ada-Rosa Simpkins; and great-grandchildren, Jasmine Coleman, Alexis Coleman, Gracie J. Ward, and Brooklyn Coleman.

The funeral was conducted July 15 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Max Linkous and Rev. Erston Young officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

An Eastern Star service was held at the funeral home July 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Meda Rae Oliver

Meda Rae Oliver, 72, of North Tazewell, VA, died July 15, 2004 at a Grundy nursing home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Canebrake, WV, she was a daughter of the late James Henry and Gladys Pertee Oliver, both Tazewell County natives.

She was a lifelong resident of the Tazewell County area and attended Dunfordtown Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors: sisters, Joyce Sparks of North Tazewell, Dorothy Hall and husband, Bill, of Taylorsville, NC; and brothers, Jack Oliver and wife, Sue, of Cedar Bluff, Claude Oliver and wife, Evelyn, of Taylorsville, and Jerry Oliver and Donna of Clairmont, NC.

Graveside services were conducted July 17 at 4 p.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill with Pastor Gary Endres of the New Life Fellowship Church in Kingsport, TN, officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Ross W. Marrs

Rev. Ross W. Marrs, 78, died July 1, 2004 at Crystal Pines Nursing Home in Crystal Lake, IL.

Born in Canebrake, WV, he was the son of the late Rufus W. Marrs and Lettie (Spence) Marrs.

He was a former resident of Glenwood Retirement Village of Princeton, WV. He was a graduate of Big Creek High School in 1943 in War, WV, and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and a Korean Conflict Veteran. He married Eugenia Hodge on June 14, 1948. While living in Yukon, WV, he was an employee of The Bank of War. They moved to Huntington, WV, where he graduated from Marshall University, Summa Cum Laude, 1955. He was a member of Phi Alpha Theta and Eta Sigma Phi.

He obtained a Bachelor of Divinity from Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL, and was an Ordained Elder in the Methodist Church June 1959. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from the University of Evansville, IN, and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from DuPaul University. He served as pastor of the United Methodist Church in both West Virginia and Indiana. During this time, he served as District Superintendent of both the Lebanon District and the Indianapolis West Metropolitan District Southern Indiana Conference. The last 20 years of his career were spent pasturing the First United Methodist Church in Bloomington, IN. He retired from the ministry in 1991.

He held numerous administrative positions, serving several Boards of Methodist organizations on both state and national levels additionally, he was a delegate to the World Methodist Council. He authored several articles for The Christian Advocate and The Clergy Journal. He is also the published author of "Be My People."

Survivors: wife, Jean; daughters, Krystal Williams and husband, Jim, of Baldwin City, KS, Elyce Meador and husband, Brad, of Crystal Lake, IL; seven grandchildren; brothers, Randall of Midlothian, Richard of Finksburg, MD, John of Shreveport, LA; and sisters, Lila Johnson of Tazewell, Margaret Davidson of Greensboro, NC, and Cheryl Minnick of Franklin, TN.

Memorial services will be conducted July 24 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Bloomington, IN.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Marrs Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church of Bloomington, P.O. Box 936, Bloomington, IN 47402.

Laura J. Rife

Laura June Coleman Rife, 78, of Clear Fork Creek Road, Rocky Gap, VA, formerly of Jolo, WV, went to be with the Lord July 6, 2004.

Born in War, WV, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Nora Mullins Coleman.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and devoted Christian. She had been a cook with the McDowell County School Board System and was a member of the Rocky Gap Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, one brother, Mack "Buddy" Coleman, and two sisters, Margaret Hagerman and Patsy Johnson.

Survivors: her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Anthony L. Rife; daughters, Gilda Kennedy and husband, Garnie, and Hilda Sutphin and husband, Larry, all of Clear Fork Creek Rd., Rocky Gap; sons, Merrill T. Rife of Bastian, Alvis R. Rife and Travis R. Rife, both of Clear Fork Creek Rd., Rocky Gap; grandchildren, Daniel Rife, Melissa Rife Belcher, Laura Marie Rife, Ashley Rife, Kelli Rife, Robert D. Rife, Angela Rife, Anthony Horne, Dean Horne, Jr. and wife, Jessica, Samantha Horne, Amy Horne Caudill and husband, Brad, Vanessa Kennedy Havens and husband, Steve, Anthony "Tony" Kennedy and wife, Rhonda, Brian Kennedy and wife, Christy, Jeromy Sutphin and Chris Sutphin and wife, Angie; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Louise Adams and husband, Leonard, of English, WV; and brother, Patrick Coleman and wife, Mary, of Elyria, OH.

The funeral was conducted July 9 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Eddie Johnson, Rev. Billy Ward, and Rev. Freddie Dobbs officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Rocky Gap Pentecostal Holiness Church, P. O. Box 265, Rocky Gap, VA 24366.

Garnett Fred Whitt

Garnett Fred Whitt, 88, of North Tazewell, VA, died July 8, 2004 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.

Born at Blackwolf, WV, he was a son of the late Howard D. and Rutha Spence Whitt.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Gene Hiatt; three sisters, Gladys Shaughnessy, Sylvia Graham, and Clara Taylor; and three brothers, Allen Whitt, Otis Whitt, and Sherman Whitt.

Survivors: wife of 60 years, Erbie Isaac Whitt; children, Pansy Norton and husband, Mike, of Manassas, Edith Geraldene Burns and husband, John, of Sheridon, IN, and Fred Whitt and wife, Linda, and George Whitt, all of North Tazewell; sisters, Elsie Graham of North Tazewell, Shirley Morgan of Painesville, OH, Hazel Tuck and husband, Floyd, of Cleveland, OH; brother, Wade Whitt and wife, Betty, of North Tazewell; grandchildren Bobby Brown, Michael Brown, Samantha Brown, Jay Norton, and Matthew Norton, all of Northern, VA, Joe Hiatt and wife, Karen, Jimmy Hiatt, and Tracey Godbey, all of Indiana; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted July 11 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Mark Sexton officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

David Alonzo Bowman

David Alonzo Bowman, 40, of Rt. 4 (Mudfork) North Tazewell, died July 1, 2004 at his home.

Born in Bluefield, WV, he was a son of Thomas Edward Bowman, Sr. and Dorothy Riley Bowman.

He was a humble and loving person and was loved by everyone.

Survivors in addition to his parents: sisters, Brenda Sue McDougald, Wanda Faye Hawkins, and Opal Darlene Bowman, all of Mudfork, and brothers, Eddie Wayne Bowman, Thomas Edward Bowman, Jr. and Kenneth Ray Bowman, all of Mudfork.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. July 4 at the Bowman Family residence at Mudfork with the Rev. Danny Cornwell officiating.

Burial followed at the Sluss Family cemetery at Mudfork.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Robert C. Butler

Robert Clay Butler, 67, of Parkersburg, WV, died July 3, 2004 at the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

Born in Castlewood, he was a son of the late John A. and Vera Clay Butler.

He was retired from GE Plastics in 1997 after 34 years of service. He graduated from the University of Richmond, was a US Army veteran and served in the Army National Reserve. He was also a member of the Parkersburg Elks Club and National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, Inc.

Survivors: children, Suzie L. Butler and Lisa L. Bell and husband, Harry, all of Charlotte, NC, John C. Butler and wife, Marie, of Parkersburg; grandchildren, Amy Leigh Bell of Charlotte, Anthony Kole Butler of Parkersburg; former wife and best friend, Billie Sue Butler of Charlotte; cousin Betty Jean Barr of Virginia; and his cat Samantha.

Graveside services were conducted July 6 at 1 p.m. at the Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood.

Visitation was July 5 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg with a Time of Remembrance at 7 p.m.

Bernard Carter

Bernard Carter, 93, of Bluefield, VA, died June 29, 2004 at his home.

Born in Martinsburg, WV, he was the son of the late John Gordon Carter and Elizabeth McMullin Carter.

He was a member of Graham Christian Church, serving as a deacon. He was retired from Betsy Ross Bakery.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen Boyd Carter; four sisters, Juanita Morton, Evelyn Wilburn, Ann Hylton and Virginia Shrader; and one brother, George Carter.

Survivors: sons, Don Carter of Naples, FL, J.B. Carter and wife, Ellen, of Lynchburg; sister, Dora Mancari of South Charleston, WV; grandchildren, Marc Carter and wife, Nina, of Naples, Nora Bohart and husband, Russ, of Baltimore, MD, Kim Tibbs and husband, Stephen, of Lynchburg; and great-grandchildren, Sophia Carter of Naples and Carter Bohart of Baltimore, MD.

The funeral was conducted July 2 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Michael Harrison officiating.

Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road in Bluefield, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a favorite charity.

Imogene Taylor Heffinger Corvin

Imogene Taylor Heffinger Corvin, 66, of Tip Top, VA, made her journey home to be with her savior on June 28, 2004 in Bluefield, WV, as a result of a long illness.

Born in Anawalt, WV, she was the daughter of the late Earnest and Louise Heffinger.

She graduated from Tazewell High School and worked with the public and retail business for years. She was a member of the Tip Top United Methodist Church. She showed a lot of love to every one and she will be missed by all that knew her.

Survivors: husband of 18 years, Garvin Corvin; daughters, Sharon Gemmell and husband, Robert L. Gemmell, of North Tazewell, Rita Smith of Springerville, AZ; son, George Randall Pauley of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Shannon Perkins and husband, Dallis Perkins, of Hickory, NC, Jonathan Smith of Springerville, AZ, Jonathan Pauley of Mesa, AZ; great-grandchildren, Caleb M. Perkins of Hickory, NC, and Jada Smith and Conner Smith of Arizona; sisters, Norma Bowman and husband, Reese, of North Tazewell, Dorothy Heffinger Garibay and husband, Lucio, of Nocaatee, FL, Evelyn Gillespie of Bluefield, VA, Sue Barker and husband, Wayne, of Meadowview, Elsie Hale and husband, Rex, of Springville; brothers, Ralph D. Heffinger and wife, Connie, of Knoxville, TN, Joseph Heffinger and wife, Mary, and Edward "Pete" Heffinger and wife, Kay, all of Tip Top; a number of nieces and nephews; stepsons, David Corvin, Kenneth Corvin and Darrell Corvin; and stepdaughters, Molly White and Sarah Zobwaski, all of North Carolina.

The funeral was conducted July 2 at 11 a.m. at Peery and St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Leon Yost officiating.

Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road, Bluefield, VA.
