Henry Lee (Slim) Spivey, 85, of North Tazewell, died July 3, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital following a long illness.
Born at Freeman, WV, he was a son of the late Samuel Lee Spivey and Fannie Woods McHone.
He was a heavy equipment operator having worked at Harman Coal Company and later retiring from Jewell Smokeless Coal Company. He was a member of the U.M.W.A.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Jessee Spivey; two sisters, Margaret Gilbert and Dolly Mae Rose; and one grandson, Bradley Spivey.
Survivors: sons, Scotty Wayne Spivey of Swords Creek, Roger Lee Spivey of North Tazewell, Billy Joe Spivey of Marion; daughters, Lolita Joyce Bowman of Swords Creek, Judith Lynn Mabe of Tazewell, Claudia Spivey of Bluefield, VA; 16 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted July 6 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Jason West of Varney, WV, officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Lillian A. Spurgeon
Lillian A. Spurgeon, 94, formerly of Bluefield, VA, died June 30, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born in Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of the late Jerome B. Kitts and Lucy Humphreys Kitts.
She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church since 1926 and was a faithful worker in the church.
She was the last surviving member of her family including 11 children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil S. Spurgeon.
Survivors: sons, Cecil Ed Spurgeon and wife, Anna, of Bluefield, VA, James Spurgeon and wife, Alois, of Heritage Hall, Tazewell, Richard M. Spurgeon of Bluefield, WV; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
The funeral was conducted July 2 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Lacy Brooks and Pastor Tom Adkins officiating.
Burial followed at the Maple Hill cemetery in Bluefield, VA.

George J. Bucklen
George Junior Bucklen, 80, of Richlands, died June 23, 2004 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Logan, WV, he was a son of the late Ervin and Lulu Pyle Bucklen, both West Virginia natives.
He was a retired miner with Jewell Ridge Coal Company at Jewell Valley, and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union #7327. He had made his home in the Richlands area most of his life and was of the Pentecostal Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Sue Bucklen; two sons, George Bucklen, Jr., and Steve Allen Bucklen; one sister, Lorrene Bucklen; one brother, Roscoe Bucklen; one granddaughter, Sabrina Cordle Williams; and one grandson, Steve Allen Bucklen, II.
Survivors: wife, Dorothy Elizabeth Smith Bucklen; daughters, Connie Monk and husband, Woody, and Donna Cordle and husband, Rocky, all of Richlands, Rebecca Carr and husband, Vern, of Greenville, NC; sons, Ron Bucklen and wife, Gelema, of Ft. Mitchell, KY, David Bucklen and wife, Linda, of Bandy; brothers, Johnny Bucklen of Bandy, Donald Bucklen of Tazewell; sister, Lena Harrison of Stuart; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted June 26 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Monte Elswick officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Dallas L. Crabtree
Dallas Lewis Crabtree, 37, of Cedar Bluff, died June 24, 2004 at his home.
Born in McDowell County, WV, he was the son of Albert Owen Crabtree of Coalwood, WV, and Mary Ruth Hardin Whitt of Hurley.
He was a 1985 graduate of Hurley High School and a graduate of Concord College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree of Arts and Science. He was a disabled U.S. Air Force Veteran and of the Pentecostal Faith. He was an avid sports enthusiasts.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Jeffery Owen Crabtree.
Survivors: father, Albert Owen Crabtree of Coalwood; mother, Mary Ruth Hardin Whitt and stepfather, Harold Whitt of Hurley; and sister, Aundrea Justus and husband, Scott, of Rosedale.
The funeral was conducted June 28 at 1 p.m. at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with the Revs. Ronnie Sliger and Russell King officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Services were held June 26 and 27 at the funeral home at 7 p.m.
Full Military Rites were conducted at the cemetery by the John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
Billy Lockhart
Billy Lockhart, 72, of Ashland, OH, formerly of Richlands, died April 18, 2004 at his home following an extended illness.
Born in Iaeger, WV, he was a son of the late Troy and Ethel Mae Deskins Lockhart.
He attended Richlands High School and was a U. S. Air Force Korean War Veteran. He was an independent contractor for United Telephone-Sprint for 22 years retiring in 1991. He attended First Baptist Church in Ashland, was a member of the Eagles and Moose Lodges in Virginia, and was Past President of IBEW Local #688 in Mansfield, OH.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Frankie Dye; two brothers, Buddy and Morris Lockhart; and one sister, Natalie Gross.
Survivors: wife, Haroldine Cidie Taylor Lockhart, whom he married
June 20, 1959; daughters, Dreama Lockhart of Columbus, OH, Melissa Green of Ashland, OH; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and John Thompson of Gate City, Rita and Ron Fuller of Dublin; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted July 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Stafford Compton officiating.
Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post No. 9640 of Richlands and Disabled American Veterans Tazewell Co. Chapter #31 will conduct military rites.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home July 2 at 6 p.m. until the service hour.
Diana D. Kiser
Diana D. Kiser, 72, of the Baptist Valley section of North Tazewell, VA, died June 18, 2004 at her home following a brief illness.
Born in Berwind, WV, she was the daughter of the late Frank Earl and Julia Somoskey Belcher.
She had made her home in the Baptist Valley area most of her life. She was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Baptist Valley and a dedicated Christian. She was also a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a 1950 graduate of Big Creek High School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert B. Kiser, and one brother, Donald "Tony" Belcher.

Robert David Kinder
Robert David Kinder, 59, of Bim, WV, formerly of Bandy, died June 12, 2004 at a Hinton, WV hospital.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Robert Jessie and Rosa Catherine Boyd Kinder, both Buchanan County natives.
He had made his home in the Bandy area most of his life moving to Bim 14 years ago. He was an excavator for Massey Energy. He was a member of the Mountain Man Motorcycle Club and was of the Pentecostal Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Barbara Jean Kinder, and three brothers, William, Earl, and Nealie Kinder.
Survivors: daughters, Corinna Reilly of Beverly Hills, FL, Sandra Parham of North Carolina; sons, Robert D. Kinder, Jr. of Bim, Stacey Kinder of North Carolina, Nathan Kinder of Tazewell; stepson, Randy Clayborne of North Carolina; his fiancée, Lisa Cook of Bim; sisters, Lettie Peterson of Aurora, CO, Jettie Thompkins of Rhinebeck, New York, Kitty Mae Gore of Cabot, AR, Ruby Rose of Nokesville; brother, Frank E. Kinder of Ward, AR; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
He will be taken to the Handley Funeral Home at 3rd St. and Phipps Ave. in Danville, WV, where friends may call from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. June 16 and returned to the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands June 17 for his service.
Evelyn M. Brown
Evelyn Marie Brown, 56, of Tazewell, VA, died May 31, 2004 at a Tazewell hospital following a brief illness.
Born at English, WV, she was the daughter of the late Albert Denver and Edith Ethel Lawson Holloway.
She had made her home in the Tazewell area most of her life. She was a graduate of Tazewell High School, class of 1968. She was a housewife, loving mother and grandmother. She was a volunteer at Heritage Hall Nursing Home. She attended the Church of Christ at Baptist Valley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Martha Virginia Tooley Harrison, 81, of Richlands, VA, formerly of Matoaka, WV, died June 1, 2004 at her home suddenly.
Born in Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late John and Sarah Ann Gibson Tooley.
She was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Harrison; two sons, Bobby Gene Harrison and James Gerald Harrison; one daughter, Betty Harrison; and one sister, Lotis Mills.

Donna N. Dennison
Donna Norrine Brewster Dennison, 52, of Salisbury, NC, formerly of Newhall, WV, died May 23, 2004 at Cleveland, NC, at home with family.
Born at Newhall, she was a daughter of Nellie Bandy Brewster of Newhall and the late Clarence Arthur Brewster.
She was of the Advent Christian faith.
