Mary Ann Moore

Mary Ann Thacker Moore, 61, of Rt. 1 Raven, VA, died Sept. 5, 2005 at her home follow a long illness.

Born in Mingo County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Fonso Willie Thacker and Lola Marie Hurley Thacker of Williamson, WV.

She was a loving wife and mother and was a member of Deliverance Tabernacle Church at Patterson for 24 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Miller.

Survivors: her wonderful husband of 44 years, Billy Moore; son, Alex Moore of Rt. 1 Raven; foster mother, Ruby Church and husband, Bill, of Wytheville; sisters, Phyllis Owens and husband, Farley, of Rt. 1 Raven, Ethel Frances and husband, Russell, of Hancock, MD, Leona Prater and husband, Ransom, of Stopover, KY, Della Murphy of Sumter, SC, Willie J. Quinley and husband, Donnie, of Grundy, Alisha Adams and Jennifer Deel and husband, Cecil, all of Rural Retreat; brothers, Glenn Miller and wife, Jean, of Duncan, AZ, Ronnie Thacker, Tony Blankenship of Mississippi, Hassell Blankenship and Shack Blankenship, both of Grundy, Bill Jr. Church and wife, Ann, of Rural Retreat; and several nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

The funeral will be conducted Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Jack Ward, Rev. Laurence Horn, Rev. Clell Daniels and Rev. Jerry Matney officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park cemetery at Big Rock.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 6 and 7.

Fern Pauline Whitt

Fern Pauline Brown Whitt, 73, of Squire, WV, went to be with the Lord Sept. 4, 2005 at her home following a long illness.

Born in McDowell County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Tabor Brown and Amanda “Mandy” Hardy Brown, both Squire, WV natives.

She had made her home in Squire most of her life. She was a member of the Squire Freewill Baptist Church and had been a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Whitt; one son, Gary Wayne Whitt; one sister, Hazel Sutherland; and one brother, Don Brown.

Survivors: daughters, Darlene Baldwin of Squire, Donna Harman of Raven, Vanessa Williams and husband, Keith, of Centerville; sons, Clarence Whitt and wife, Sandra, of Centerville, Lawrence Whitt and wife, Cathy, of Mudrock Rd., James Whitt and wife, Beverly, of Akron, OH; brother, Frank Brown and wife, Willie, of Blacksburg; special friend, Andrew Cartney; special nephew, Joseph Romeo; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell with the Rev. Darrell Long and Rev. Arnold Meyers officiating.

Interment will take place at the Grandview Memorial cemetery in Bluefield, VA.

Ora Dotson

Ora Dotson, 77, of the Big A Mountain section of Honaker, went to sing with the angels Aug. 26, 2005 in a Richlands hospital.

Born Dec. 4, 1927 in Logan County, WV, she was a daughter of the late Hurbert and Willie Schultz Williams.

She spent her early life in West Virginia, moving to this area in 1958.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Talmage Dotson, Jr.; one brother, Arnold Williams; three sisters, her twin, Nora Hartwell, Mary Ann Dotson, and Louise Hager; and one grandson, Lonnie Edward Thompson, Jr.

Survivors: husband of 58 years, Talmage Dotson; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Kay Thompson and husband, Larry “Big T,” of Honaker, Wanda Joyce Lockhart and husband, Randall, of Hurricane Creek; son, Stanley Dotson of Haysi; sisters, Nancy Jones of Logan, WV, Pearl Bowen of Madison, WV; brothers, Charles Williams of Clothier, WV, Harvey Williams of Madison; grandchildren, Vicki Swiney and husband, Greg, Scott Thompson and wife, Kendra, Tammy Hess and husband, Billy, Shawn Thompson, Alexander Thompson, Tyler Dotson, Byron Dotson, Jacob Dotson, and Misti Duty; great-grandchildren, T.J. Talmage Scott Thompson, Jr., Dylan Thompson, Payton Brown, Katie Brown, Spencer Swiney, and Victoria Lonniejo Swiney; and a very special friend, Adeline Duty.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson, Rev. Patricia Tiller and Rev. Willard Cook officiating.

Entombment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Lebanon.

Flora Ethel Lawson

Flora Ethel Lawson, 89, of Squire, WV, died Aug. 22, 2005 at her home.

Born July 23, 1916, in Scott County, she was a daughter of the late Willie E. and Nannie Harris Kilgore.

She was a 57 year member of the Ellison Rebekah Lodge #90, where she was a past District Deputy and a past Nobel Grand. She was a 20 year member of the Bramwell Chapter #158 Order of the Eastern Star. She had been very involved in her children’s school activities and was very active in the PTA. She was of the Baptist faith. She was devoted to her family and community. God blessed her with a long life and a pioneer spirit that prevailed. Her family is happy to proclaim her victory over death as she walks into the arms of her Savior.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Johnson Lawson; one son, Burleigh Lawson; and one sister, Jennie Mae Pope.

Survivors: daughters, Ada Gertrude Brinkley and husband, Lee, of Salem, MO, Rita L. Calhoun and husband, Alvin, of Moneta, Brenda L. Bales and husband, Dave, of Columbia City, IN; sons, Wincel E. Lawson of Portsmouth, E. Wayne Lawson and wife, Ora Mae, of Lindside, WV; special daughter-in-law, Marie H. Lawson of War, WV, wife of Burleigh Lawson; sister, Peggy Broadwater and husband, Lowell, of Nickelsville; brothers, Bill Kilgore and wife, Lena of Gate City, Joe Kilgore and wife, Agnes, of Kingsport, TN; ten grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Gus Anderson officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

The family requests memorial donations be made to a favorite charity.

Lowell Glen Compton

Lowell Glen Compton, 83, of Richlands, died Aug. 17, 2005 in a Richlands area hospital, following a brief illness.

Born in Cinderella, WV, he was the son of the late R.J. and Violet Baker Compton, both Virginia natives.

He had made his home in Richlands most of his life. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a retired Assistant Vice President for First National Bank, First National Exchange Bank and Dominion Bank of Richlands. He was a member of the Richlands Lodge # 318 AF & AM, and was a member and Elder of the Richlands Presbyterian Church where he served as the Church treasurer for 39 years.

Survivors: loving wife, Peggy Hughes Compton; daughters, Debra Compton Ball and husband, Bill, of Holly Springs, NC, Tracie Lorraine Compton Deel of Henderson, KY; sister, Lorraine McGee and husband, Bill, of Kingsport, TN; and grandchildren Timothy Ball and Emalee Deel.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Richlands Presbyterian Church, in Richlands, with the Rev. Dennis Hoffman officiating.

Interment followed at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

Friends called at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands Aug. 18 from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Richlands Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 446, Richlands, VA 24641.

Hattie Jane Rose

Hattie Jane Rose, 90, of Woodbridge, VA, formerly of Newhall, WV, died Aug. 19, 2005 at her home following a long illness.

Born Jan. 25, 1915 in McDowell County, WV, she was a daughter of the late Harve and Rosanna Hicks Click.

She was a long time resident of Newhall, before moving to Woodbridge. She was a member of the True Church of God in Jesus Name in Newhall.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Charlie Rose; three sons, Robert Rose, Jasper Rose, and John Rose; and one daughter, Susie Holmes.

Survivors: daughter, Goldie Brewster of Woodbridge, with whom she made her home; grandsons, Rev. Dwayne Brewster of Rhoadesville, James Roy Pennington of Newark, DE; granddaughters, Susie Evick of Newark, Shelia Joy Permenter of Elkton, MD; three great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and sister, Dovie Brewster of Newhall.

The funeral will be conducted Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Dwayne Brewster and the Rev. Hazel Click officiating.

Burial will follow at the Big Creek cemetery in McDowell County.

The family will receive friends Aug. 25 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harold W. Thompson

Harold W. Thompson, 77, of Ellicott City, MD, formerly of Newburg, MD, died Aug. 12, 2005 at Continuame Care, Sykesville, MD.

Born Nov. 24, 1927 in Canebrake, WV, he was the son of the late Earl and Cora Davidson Thompson.

He was a retired insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance where he worked 30 years. He was a Navy veteran and past president of the Lions Club. He was also an avid boatsman, hunter, and enjoyed woodworking.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wives Lois Richardson Thompson and Maudie Thompson, and one sister, Ruth Reiner.

Survivors: daughter, Candy Thompson and husband, Rick, of Ellicott City; sons, Howard (Randy) Thompson and wife, Linda, of Lewisville, TX, Dr. Darrell Thompson and wife, Pat, of North Tazewell; grandchildren, Julie Anderson, and husband, Jimmy, Karri Gregory, and husband, Jason, Mary Asbury, Alison Kidd and husband, Aaron, Austin Thompson, Matt Thompson, Brad Thompson and Lindsey Zito; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Gregory, Grace Richardson, Isaac Asbury, and Connor Gregory.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 17 at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home in La Plata, MD.

Interment followed at the Maryland Veterans cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.

Memorial contributions may be made to the La Plata Lions Club Foundation, P.O. Box 2392, La Plata, MD 20646.

Glynn Carlock, Sr.

Glynn Carlock, Sr., 67, of Bluefield, VA, died Aug. 8, 2005 at Westwood Health Care in Bluefield, VA.

Born in Yukon, WV, he was a son of Gladys Canard of Martinsville and the late Frank Carlock.

He attended High School at Big Creek High School in War, WV, and received his B.S. Degree at Concord College in Athens and his Master of Science Degree at Radford University in Radford.

He served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 until 1960.

He formerly worked for the Mercer County School System at Bluefield High School for ten years, where he was Guidance Counselor, Biology and Physical Education Teacher and was Assistant Football Coach and Track Coach.

He was the Head Football Coach at Graham High School in Bluefield, VA from 1973 and was also Athletic Director. He was inducted in the Virginia High School Hall of Fame in Oct. 1998, was President of the Virginia High School Coaches Association, member of the Virginia High School Executive Committee and a member of the National Federation of State High School Association. He also was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bluefield.

Additional survivors: wife, Ann B. Carlock; son, Glynn Carlock, Jr.; and sisters, Barbara Honaker and Betty Overbey, both of Martinsville, Rita Swift of Missouri.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Bluefield Auditorium, Stadium Dr., Bluefield, with Dr. Primitivo Delgado and Dr. W.D. Hasty officiating.

Burial followed in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

The family is in the process of forming a foundation to honor the Coach. More information will be coming in the future concerning this foundation.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA, was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth L. Pennington

Elizabeth L. Steele Pennington, 84, of Maple Heights, OH, died Aug. 2, 2005 in Maple Heights.

Born April 2, 1921 in Kimball, WV, she was a daughter of the late John Henry Steele and Nora E. Thompson Steele.

She was the youngest of five children and was baptized early in life at First Baptist Church in Kimball, WV.

She graduated from Kimball High School in 1940 and later married Artis Pennington from Marytown, WV, who preceded her in death. She worked in a dry cleaning business for many years.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William Steele and John Steele, and two sisters, Lorean Cabiness and Sue R. Greer.

Survivors: sisters-in-law, Charlie Mae Steele of Detroit, MI, Erma Pennington of Cleveland, OH; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Graveside services were conducted Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Reader White

Jessie Reader White, 84, of Bluefield, WV, died July 20, 2005 in Bluefield, after a long illness.

Born in Bluefield, she was a daughter of the late John Ezra White and Georgia Mae Boehm White.

She was of the Protestant faith and was a former employee for Mills Grocery, Acme Markets and Bluefield News Agency.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William White and Ted White, and one sister, Juanita White.

Survivors: sisters-in-law, Angie White of Bluefield, VA; nieces, Virginia Mae Steele and husband, George, of Lebanon, Teddy Ann Gearheart and husband, Charles, of Bluefield, VA, Dawn Driscol and husband, Paul, of Princeton, WV, Heather McGonagle, and husband, Chuck, of Princeton; and nephew, Bill White and wife, Carolyn, of Falls Mills.

Graveside services were held July 23 at 2 p.m. at the Maple Hill cemetery in Bluefield, VA, with Billy White officiating.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA, was in charge of arrangements.
