Elizabeth L. Greever

Elizabeth L. Greever, 81, of Bluefield, WV, died July 25, 2005 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV.

Born June 15, 1924 at Glen White, WV, she was a daughter of the late E.E. Jones and Bessie K. Jones.

Some of her many accomplishments include: attending Greenbrier Women’s College, volunteering with the American Red Cross, doing professional genealogy, and was active with the John Chapman Chapter, DAR. She also enjoyed her special times with the “Class of 43”. She was a devoted wife and mother and will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill B. Greever, Sr., two brothers, William Kermit Jones and Emory Eugene Jones; and one sister, Virginia Mae Jones.

Survivors: daughter, Katherine Durham of Bluefield, WV; sons, William David Spencer of Huntsville, AL, Daniel Phillip Spencer of Laceys Springs, AL, Bill Blair Greever, Jr. and wife, Joshlyn Davis Greever, of North Tazewell; older brother, Edward Jones of Princeton, WV; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted July 28 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Dr. James H. Grant, Jr. officiating.

Burial followed at the Greever Family cemetery in Tazewell.

Dolly Blevins Samuels

Dolly Blevins Samuels, 90, of Rich Valley, VA, died July 27, 2005 at the Valley Health Care in Chilhowie.

Born Feb. 4, 1915 at Artie, WV, she was a daughter of the late Eli Jack Blevins and Ada Pearl Ferrell Blevins.

She spent 49 years living in McDowell County, WV, 22 years living in Richmond and 20 years living in Rich Valley. She was a member of the Goodman’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Rich Valley for 20 years. She worked at the Medical College of Virginia for a short time, which was an experience she was excited to have had.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ransie Samuels, and two brothers, Keither Blevins and Zenith Blevins. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend and was generous and sharing with others.

Survivors: sons, Larry Samuels and wife, Linda, of Knoxville, TN, Tony Samuels and wife, Lili, of Glendale, AZ, Ricky Samuels and wife, Jacqueline, of Saltville; daughter, Judy Coulthard and husband, Jim, of Rich Valley; sisters-in-law, Genevieve Blevins, Lola Samuels, Pauline Carucci, Edna Carucci, and Rita Carucci; grandchildren, Scott Samuels, Kent Samuels, Jill S. Freeze, Mike Coulthard, Cheryl C. Doane, Amy C. Somervell, Toni S. Meeks, Dolly S. Garza, Desiree Samuels, Freddy Holter, Bryan Samuels, and Chad Glass; 23 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a very close friend, Jessee Kaczanowski; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted July 30 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor RuthAnne Henley officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Goodman’s Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Cheryl Doane, 2879 BF Buchanan HWY, Saltville, VA 24370, or the Saltville Rescue Squad, Drawer D, Saltville, VA 24370, would be appreciated.

Robert (Bob) Boothe

Robert Allen (Bob) Boothe, 65, of Belfast, died at his home July 8, 2005.

Born Feb. 2, 1940 in Caretta, WV, he was a son of the late Mary Gilbert Boothe.

He was owner and operator of Rosedale Mining Cable and a U.S. Army Veteran having served in Korea. He attended First Christian Church in Abingdon. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Jack Boothe.

Survivors: wife of 42 years, Carolyn Ratcliff Boothe; daughter, Christy Boothe Blevins and husband, Sam, of Abingdon; sons, Dr. Robert Allen Boothe, II and wife, Tanya, of Abingdon, Dr. Samuel Kenneth Boothe and wife, Missy, of Marion; grandchildren, Sam, Kayla and Maddie Blevins; Trey, Gape and Jadon Boothe; Kenny Christopher, Dylan and Alyson Boothe; sister, Dot Bishop of Flint, MI; brothers, Bill Boothe and wife, Betty, of Richlands, Charles Boothe, of Hopewell; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted July 10 at 3 p.m. in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Dennis Wheeler, Pastor and the Rev. Grady McGlothlin officiating.

Burial followed in the Family cemetery at Belfast.

Beulah C. Ratliff

Beulah Childress Stiltner Ratliff, 86, of the Poplar Creek section of Grundy, died July 4, 2005 in Westwood Health Care Center, Bluefield, VA, following an extended illness.

Born at Coalwood, WV, she was a daughter of the late William Robert and Louisa Owens Childress. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was a member of the Big Prater Primitive Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lum Stiltner, April 13, 1982, and her second husband, Ercel Ratliff, Nov. 15, 2002; one daughter, Becky Stiltner Baldwin; two sons, Virgil B. Stiltner and infant son, Randy Michael Stiltner; three sisters, Georgia Maney, Virginia Woodard and Zuma Peer; and two brothers, Roy and Homer Childress.

Survivors: daughters, Arlene Wheeler of Bristol, TN, Judy Schubert and husband, Walter, of Mechanicsville, Diann Hagy of Grundy, Margaret Brown and husband, Larry, and Mary Kay Pierce and husband, Bill, all of Tazewell; sons, Jerry Stiltner and wife, Gertrude, and Larry Stiltner and wife, Kelsie, all of Grundy, John Stiltner and wife, Cathy, of Rosedale, James Stiltner and wife, Louann, of Strasburg, Chris Stiltner and wife, Sharon, of Lebanon; sisters, Gertrude Page of Floyd, Gaye Branham of Marietta, OH; brother, Jack Childress of Beaufort, SC; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral was conducted July 7 at 11 a.m. at the Big Prater Primitive Baptist Church near Vansant with Elders Buford Stacy, Jeff Arnold and Aaron Williams officiating.

Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

A song service was held July 6 at 7 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to Harman Memorial Baptist Church, Box 320, Maxie VA 24618 or to Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Ave., FI 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.

Teddy Collins, Sr.

Teddy Collins, Sr., 71, of Richlands, VA, died June 28, 2005 in a Kingsport, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Logan, WV, he was a son of the late Ora and Russia Vance Collins, both West Virginia natives.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps Korean Conflict Veteran and a charter member and current Commandant of SWVA Detachment 980 Marine Corps League. He was a retired Coal Miner with Island Creek Coal Company. He was a devoted Boy Scout Leader and a 40-year resident of the Richlands area. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Joann Collins Mathis.

Survivors: wife, Edith Bryant Collins; daughter, Angel Dawn Shelton and husband, Jody, of Richlands; son, Teddy Vaughn Collins and wife, Patricia Kay, of Richlands; brothers, Lionel Collins and wife, Karen, Larry C. Collins, and Danny D. Collins and wife, Karen, all of Logan, Roger Collins and wife, Lee, of West Hamlin, WV, Gary Gene Collins and wife, Betty, of Columbus, OH; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral was conducted July 2 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with President Mike McClure officiating.

Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 conducted military graveside rites.

Betty J. Cook

Betty J. Cook, 84, of Tazewell, VA, died June 25, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born May 12, 1921 in Princeton, WV, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Eula “Midge” Shumate Johnson.

Survivors: son, Mark Bennett of Quincy, FL; grandchildren, Caroline Bennett of Colorado Springs, CO, Joseph Bennett and Jason Bennett, both of Racine, WI; and special caregivers and friends whom she and her family loved and appreciated, Debbie (Bomber), Christy, Theresa, Marcel, Mary, Angie, Margaret, Lisa Crouse, Donna Crisp and Nellie Stilwell.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family may be reached in Quincy, FL at (850) 627-7169.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Lockett

Mary Lockett, 85, of Tazewell, VA, died June 16, 2005 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.

Born June 4, 1920 in Powhatan, WV, she was a daughter of the late William Talcum and Martha Carrington.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pocahontas, where she was active in church activities until failing health. She was also a member of the Little Zion Travelers Quartet and in later years sang solo in numerous churches. She was a former senior companion with the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. Harold Green; her second husband, Rev. Ronell Lockett; and loving step-son, which she helped raise, Hershel Lockett.

Survivors: step daughter, which she also helped raise, Vanessa Lockett Mosley of North Carolina; sister, Shirley Adams of Tazewell; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; three sisters-in-law; a host of nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews; great-great nieces and great-great nephews, and cousins who cherished her and called her Aunt Bea; numerous friends and a special friend Lorraine Williams of Freeman, WV.

The funeral was conducted June 25 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Curtis Spencer officiating.

Burial followed at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Bluewell, WV.

Mary Jane Munsey

Mary Jane Campbell Munsey, 78, of Bluefield, VA, died June 17, 2005 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born in Killarney, WV, she was a daughter of the late Bud E. Campbell and Sally Jones Campbell.

She was a graduate of Bluefield Business College and was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Bluefield. She was retired from First National Bank in Bluefield and formerly employed at Bluefield Supply Co.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Marvin Munsey, and one brother, Wallace William Campbell.

Survivors: sons, Hugh C. Munsey of Bluefield, VA, Dr. G. Stephen Munsey and wife, Marcia Pochick Munsey of Springville, J. Michael Munsey and wife, Dina Rasi Munsey, of Rocky Gap; daughter, Mary Beth Munsey Kitts of Winston Salem, NC; grandchildren, Todd Daniel Munsey and Anna Elizabeth Munsey of Springville, Randi Jo Kitts and Elijah Michael Kitts of Winston-Salem, NC; and sister, Betty Gaye Bryant of Pompano Beach, FL.

Graveside services were held June 19 at 2 p.m. at the Grandview Mausoleum Chapel with Dr. Charles Miller officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Scholarship Fund” or “Mary’s Cradle” through Trinity United Methodist Church, 401 College Ave., Bluefield, WV 24701.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA was in charge of arrangements.

Sandra Young Hazelwood

Sandra Young Hazelwood, 61, of Tannersville, VA, formerly of Bluefield, WV, died June 18, 2005 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN.

Born June 1, 1944 in Bluefield, WV, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Maude Gill Young.

She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Bluefield, WV. She attended Beaver High School.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Sunny Young and Persian Young, and one sister, Evelyn Johnson.

Survivors: husband of 33 years, Jerry Hazelwood; sons, Chris Hazelwood of Abingdon, Jody Hazelwood, Patrick Hazelwood, and Jesse Hazelwood, all of Tannersville; brothers, Dale Young and wife, Carol, of Alexandria, Vance Young and wife, Norma, of Centreville, Ronnie Young of Hillsville; sister, Betty Vickers of Beckley, WV; and three grandchildren, Whitney Wise and Ben Hazelwood of Bristol, VA and Abigail Hazelwood of Tazewell.

The funeral was conducted June 21 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Don Smith officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Edith Shrader Beavers

Edith Shrader Beavers, 92, of Tazewell, VA, died Dec. 9, 2005 at Heritage Hall Nursing Center in Tazewell.

Born at Canebreak, WV, she was a daughter of the late Clarence J. and Sallie Jones Shrader.

She had made her home in the Tazewell area for most of her life. She was a housewife and homemaker. She was a long time member of Adria Advent Christian Church where she loved being in the choir and the W. H. & F. M.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Newton Beavers, and one brother, Roy Shrader.

Survivors: sons, B. Jack Beavers and wife, Lorraine, of North Tazewell, John Roger Beavers and wife, Carol, of Midlothian; sisters, Elizabeth Monagham of Akron, OH, Eleanor Etter of Tazewell; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Rev. Don Elswick officiating.

Entombment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool.
