Russell Emory Boothe

Russell Emory Boothe, 84, of Woodbridge, VA, formerly of Abbs Valley, passed from this life into the arms of Jesus Dec. 5, 2005 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Rusty and Jack Pierson in Woodbridge.

Born Aug. 1, 1921 in Caretta, WV, he was a son of the late Luther and Nellie Mae Day Boothe.

He was a good Christian man and a member of the Abbs Valley Church of Jesus Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in Germany with the 89th infantry. He was a retired coal miner from Jacobs Fork Coal Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Freeman Boothe; three sons, Lloyd (Dood) Phillips, Larry Boothe, and Lacy (Pete) Phillips; two sisters, Dorothy Bales and Delphia Hartsock; and two brothers, Orville and Harold Boothe.

Survivors: daughters, Rusty Pierson and husband, Jack, of Woodbridge, Sue Jaskiewicz and husband, Richard, of Stafford; stepson, Burl Phillips, Jr. of Martinsville; sister, Coleen Kirby of Thompson Valley; brothers, Ray Boothe of Abbs Valley, Kenneth Boothe of Anderson, IN; 14 grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Minister Dennis Lambert officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

Thomas M. Burnette

Thomas Mason Burnette, 64, of Richlands, VA, died Dec. 8, 2005 in a Kingsport, TN hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born in McDowell County, WV, and was the son of the late Tom Ed and Sarah Cash Burnette, both Tazewell County natives.

He had made his home in the northern Virginia for over 30 years prior to moving to Richlands 13 years ago. He was a retired carpenter and was a member of the Raven Pentecostal Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Keen Burnette; one son, Dennis Christopher Burnette; and one brother, Edward Burnette.

Survivors: daughter, Judy Burnette of the home; son, Mark Burnette and wife, Marci, of Doran; sister, Josephine Stapleton of Taylor, MI; and grandchildren, Marcus Burnette and Marilyn Burnette.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Carl Robinson and Rev. Clarence Brown officiating.

Interment followed at the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Harold (Spivey) Dodson

Harold Kenneth (Spivey) Dodson, 84, died Dec. 11, 2005 at his residence after an extended illness.

He resided in Abingdon, VA. He was a long-time resident of Buchanan and Tazewell Counties. He retired from Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation in 1993.

He was born July 4, 1921 in Iaegar, WV. He was the son of the late E.B. and Grace Harper Dodson.

He was a member of the Pounding Mill United Methodist Church and Mountain View United Methodist Church at Abingdon. He served his country in the Navy and was a veteran of WWII. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sandy Valley Lodge #17, Scottish Rites, and Kazim Shriners.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Eichenberger.

Survivors: loving and devoted wife, Verna Lee Hudson Dodson; children, Rose Ann Dodson Hurley and husband, Steve Hurley, of Grundy, Delores Titus Switzer of West Virginia, Kenneth D. Dodson of Arlington, TX, Harold Dodson of Eccles, WV; brother, James Dodson of Ravenwood, WV; and granddaughters, Stephanie Rose Hurley Miller and husband, David Miller, and Shauna Megan Hurley.

The funeral will be conducted Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Orlando Salizar, Rev. Donald Thayer and Rev. Howell Scott officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

Masonic memorial rites were conducted at the funeral home Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. by Sandy Valley Lodge #17.

Margie E. Moody

Margie Estrue Walls Asbury Moody, 82, of Tazewell, VA, died Dec. 5, 2005 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.

Born Feb. 12, 1923 at Coalwood, WV, she was a daughter of the late Frank Brooks Walls and Roxie Virginia King Walls.

She was of the Baptist faith, having been baptized at the First Baptist Church in Welch, WV, where she attended for several years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Otis Asbury; her second husband, Luther Moody; one daughter, Linda Asbury Woods; two sisters, Alma Tobias and Anna Lane; and two brothers, Ray Walls and Paul Walls. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughters, Rita Ann Asbury Hurley of Tazewell, Janet Asbury Smith of Beckley, WV; son, David Asbury; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Dec. 8 at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Bluewell, WV with the Rev. Doug Johnson officiating.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Rose Penix

Virginia Lorain Rose Penix, 82, of Pounding Mill, VA, went home to be with the Lord Dec. 9, 2005 at a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born at Berwind, WV, and was the daughter of the late Earby Hall Rose and Rosie Lou Ellen Davis Rose.

She had made her home in Squire, WV, all her life until eight years ago when she made it with her daughter. She was a loving mother, grandmother and was a housewife. She was a member of the Thompson Valley Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Girven "Bob" Penix; one sister, Pearl Beavers; two brothers, Wiley Rose and Jessie Rose, Sr.; four brothers-in-law, Alma Beavers, Andrew Sturgill, Rex E. Sparks and Jimmy P. Lawson; and one son-in-law, Douglas E. Barnett.

Survivors: daughter, Bobbi Sabrina Burnett-Shrader and husband, Rev. James Curtis Shrader, of Pounding Mill; sisters, Vella Sparks of Cedar Bluff, Frances Sturgill of Louisa, KY, Cora Lawson of Crystal River, FL; granddaughter, Natasha Hope Lewis Simpson and husband, Roger Lee Simpson, Jr., of Pounding Mill; and great grandchildren, Zoe Brown, Zachary Simpson and Hunter Simpson of Pounding Mill.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Rev. Kevin Seabolt officiating.

Interment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Millard "Buss" Rapp

Millard "Buss" Rapp, 84, of Abingdon, VA, formerly of Bradshaw, WV, went to be with the Lord Dec. 11, 2005 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Yukon, WV, he was a son of the late Carl and Mae Spence Rapp, both Bradshaw natives.

He was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran. He was a self-employed mechanic. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Bradshaw, and a member of the American Legion Post #175 of Bradshaw. He attended the Holston Valley Baptist Church in Abingdon. He was a lifelong resident of Bradshaw.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Keith Rapp; one grandson, Christopher Joseph Rapp; and one sister, Daisy Mae Payne. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family

Survivors: wife, Nola Faye Mullins Rapp; son, Dr. Carl Steven Rapp and wife, Mary, of Abingdon; nieces, Ginger Harris and husband, G.T., and Shirley Hammond and husband, Jim, all of Richlands, Sarita Mullins and husband, Johnny, of Abingdon, Linsey McGlothlin of Cedar Bluff; nephews, Darrell Wimmer of Watseka, IL, Harold Wimmer and wife, Rita, of Claypool Hill, Billy Wimmer and wife, Valentine, of Cedar Bluff; grandson, Steven Matthew Rapp of Abingdon; former daughter-in-law, Connie Riffe and son, Jeffrey, of Bradshaw; special sister-in-law, Lola Mae Wimmer and husband, Bill, of Whitewood; cousin, Viola Johnson; several great nephews; and special caregivers, Roby, Connie, Theresa and John and Amendysis Home Hospice Care.

The funeral will be conducted Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Kelly Stevenson and the Rev. John Kiser officiating.

Interment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Members of the American Legion Post #175 of Bradshaw will conduct military graveside rites.

Friends may call at the funeral home Dec. 14 from 6-9 p.m.

Wendell Rayden Rife, Sr.

Wendell Rayden Rife, Sr., 65, of the Pea Patch section of Jewell Ridge, VA, died Dec. 9, 2005 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.

Born in Riley County, WV, April 20, 1940, he was the son of the late Walter Rife and Oma Blanche Wimmer Rife.

He was a retired truck driver, of the Church of Christ faith, avid gardener, enjoyed four wheeling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors: wife of 46 years, Rosetta Keen Rife of Pea Patch; daughter, Doris Cooper and husband, Gilbert, of Jewell Ridge; sons, Wendell Rayden Rife, Jr. and wife, Loretta of Raven, Bruce Edward Rife of Athens, GA, Kennith Wade Rife and wife, Robin, of Knoxville, TN; sisters, Josephine Kennedy and Leola Mullins, both of Jewell Ridge; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Oak Grove Church of Christ, White Mountain, Jewell Ridge, with Evangelists Clarence Herron and Hobert Kennedy officiating.

Burial followed in the Rife cemetery on Pea Patch, Jewell Ridge.

A song service was held at 7 p.m. at the church Dec. 11.

Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home in Grundy was in charge of arrangements.

James Franklin Adair, Jr.

James Franklin "Frank" Adair, Jr., 63, of Cucumber, WV, died Nov. 28, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital, following a courageous battle with his illness.

Born Oct. 10, 1942 at Cucumber, he was a son of the late James Frank Adair and Eula Rasnick Adair.

He was a disabled coal miner, and he proudly served his country in the US Army. He was a member of the Canebrake Freewill Baptist Church in Canebrake, WV.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, James Franklin Adair, III.

Survivors: loving wife, JoAnn Collis Adair, loving daughter, Cheryl Adair, loving grandson, Cody, all of the home; loving daughter-in-law, Pamela Wolfe Adair, loving granddaughter, Cassandra Adair and loving grandson, James Franklin Adair, IV, all of Cucumber; sisters, Nancy Wingo of Tazewell, Wilma Ward of North Carolina, Phyllis Knox of Tennessee; brothers, W.K. Adair of Cucumber, Robert Adair of Tazewell; and special friends, Jim Quesenberry and Bruce Parker.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 1 at 11 at the Canebrake Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell Long officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

An evening service was held Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. at the church.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

James C. Alford, Sr.

James Clyde Alford, Sr., 65, of Patterson, VA, died Dec. 3, 2005 at Clinch Valley Medical Center following an extended illness.

Born in Whitesville, WV, he was the son of the late William Clayton and Barbara Ruth McNely Alford.

He had been a resident of Buchanan County for several years, was a former employee for Jewell Coal and Coke with 12-years of service and was a disabled coal miner. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors: wife, Ellen Gibson Alford; sons, Curtis Alford and James Alford, Jr., both of Richlands, William James Alford and Johnny Earl Alford, both of Berea, OH; daughters, Patricia Ann Matney of Grundy, Tonya Lynn Ensign of Brook Park, OH; sisters, Rosa Lee Howard of Cleveland, OH, Dianna Cooper of Tazewell; brothers, Larry Scott Alford of Jonesville, Jerry Wayne Alford of Ravenna, OH; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Sam Casebolt officiating.

Burial will follow in the Gibson cemetery on Compton Mountain-Gibson Ridge Road, near Pilgrims Knob.

Friends may call at the funeral home at 5 p.m. with services Dec. 6 and 7 at 7 p.m.

Phyllis Nadine Burkett

Phyllis Nadine Lawson Burkett, 76, of Cucumber, WV, went to be with the Lord Nov. 26, 2005 in Kinston, NC, at the home of her daughter.

Born Mar. 26, 1929 in Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Andy and Virgie Lawson.

She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of War, WV, and the Ellison Rebekah Lodge #90 of Squire, WV. She was retired from Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Tazewell, as a certified nursing assistant.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Burkett, and one sister, Juanita Pennington.

Survivors left to cherish her memory: daughter, Debbie Johnson and husband, Stuart, of Kinston; sons, Don Burkett and wife, Anamika, of Atlanta, GA, Dan Burkett and wife, Cassoundra of Easley, SC; sisters, Frances Shelton of Cucumber, with whom she had made her home for the past 20 years, Winefred Tiller of Columbus, OH; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many loving friends.

The funeral was held Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Tanglewood Church of God in Kinston.

The burial was held Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. at Westview cemetery of Kinston.
