Juanita Pruett Yost

Juanita Pruett Yost, 78, of Bishop, VA, died Mar. 11, 2006 at her home following a brief illness.

She was provided loving care by her family members, Ruth Meade, and Preferred Hospice, Inc. before her death.

Born Mar. 22, 1927 in Canebrake, WV, she was a daughter of the late Sherman and Murlie Bandy Pruett.

She was a dedicated Christian and attended both Tip Top United Methodist Church and Wright’s Valley United Methodist Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Bishop. She was a 1945 graduate of Tazewell High School. She devoted her life to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and wonderful homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Anthony Leon Yost; one great grandson, Anthony Aaron Baldwin; four brothers, twins, Joe and Robert Pruett and Lance and Anthony Pruett.

Survivors: loving husband of 59 years, the Reverend E. Leon Yost; daughter, Pamela Gail Yost Alford and husband, Mike, of Bishop; granddaughters, Juanita Sherree Yost Baldwin and husband, Rick, of Macon, GA, Melissa Hope Taylor Crigger and husband, Albert, of Roanoke; grandson, Bruce Leon Yost and wife, Rebecca, of Lake Havasu City, AZ; great grandchildren, Jordan and Makayla Baldwin, Taylor, Gage and Hannah Yost; daughter-in-law, LaVonne Yost of Bishop; sisters, Shirley Null and husband, Clyde, of Bishop, Wanda Yost of Gratton; and a host of other family members and friends.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Mar. 14 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Anthony Leon Yost Memorial Scholarship Fund, C/O Emory and Henry College, Development Office, PO Box 950, Emory, VA 24327.

Mary Ellen Jackson

Mary Ellen Jackson, 78, of Vallscreek, WV, died Feb. 27, 2006 at a Tazewell hospital following a brief illness.

Born at Canebrake, WV, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Alice Waldren Marrs, Canebrake, WV, natives.

She was a lifelong resident of the Canebrake and Vallscreek area. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

She was the widow of Charles Jackson.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Johnson, and three brothers, Alfred, Dale and Allen Marrs.

Survivors: daughter, Sharon Evans and husband, Bob, of Tazewell; son, Travis Jackson of the home; sister, Shelby Ruggere and husband, John, of Hilton Head, SC; step-grandchildren, Cossondra Williams and Natalie Williams of Richmond; three step-great grandchildren; nephew, Jeff Corella of Northern Virginia; and nieces, Kelly Koldewey and Ellene Ruble of Florida.

The funeral was conducted Mar. 2 at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Bill Wyrick officiating.

Interment followed at Hartwell cemetery, Hartwell, WV.

Thelma Harman Kelly

Thelma Harman Kelly, 68, of Tannersville, VA, formerly of Oak Hill, FL, died Mar. 4, 2006 at a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born at Pageton, WV, she was a daughter of the late Steward and Alie Day Harman, Skygusty, WV, natives.

She had made her home at Oak Hill, FL, until one year ago when she moved to Tannersville. She was retired as an assistant to the Fire Chief at NASA, Cape Canaveral, FL. She was of the Church of Christ faith.

She was the widow of Fred L. Kelly. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Charles "Chuck" Kelly.

Survivors: son, Joshua E. Kelly of Deland, FL; sisters, Arlene Harman Keene of Tannersville and New Port Richey, FL, Frances McBride of Skygusty; brothers, Joshua Harman of Safety Harbor, FL; and grandchildren, Erica Kelly, Brooke Kelley and Nicole Kelly.

The funeral was conducted Mar. 7 at noon at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Rev. Bruce Hoogerwerf officiating.

Interment followed at Shady Grove cemetery, Skygusty.

James Thomas Nowlin

James Thomas Nowlin, 82, of the Crocketts Cove community of Bishop, VA, died Mar. 1, 2006 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.

Born Apr. 30, 1923 in Coal Dale, WV, he was a son of the late Thomas Nowlin and Hattie Roark Nowlin.

He was a United States Army Veteran having served during World War II. He and his wife were the proprietors of both the Mountain Top Service Station and Stoney Ridge Grocery before their retirements in 1994. He was a member of Barns Beavers V.F.W. Post #7136 of Tazewell and the American Legion Post #0331 of Bishop.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors: wife, Nancy Brooks Nowlin; daughter, Myrtle Williams of Baptist Valley; sons, Garth W. Nowlin, Sr. and wife, Dawn, of Talbott, TN, James Darrell Nowlin and wife, Susie, of Gratton; sister, Phyllis Wright of Tazewell; grandchildren, Garth W. Nowlin, Jr., Jason Nowlin, Michael Nowlin, Christopher Nowlin, Harvey Smith and Clifton Smith; and great granddaughter, Olivia Nowlin.

The funeral was conducted Mar. 3 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. John Dash officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Brown’s Chapel cemetery Fund c/o Brenda Altizer, 1687 Mudfork Road, North Tazewell, VA 24630.

Carlyle P. Mahaffey

Carlyle P. Mahaffey, 87, of Rosewood Rest Home in Harmony, NC, died Feb. 19, 2006 at Rosewood Rest Home.

He was born Dec. 4, 1918 in Freeman, WV, and was the son of the late Walter N. and Carrie Bauguess Mahaffey.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired Town Manager and former Mayor of Richlands.

Survivors: wife, Margaret Ireson Mahaffey; daughters, Polly Mahaffey Goodner of Statesville, NC, Melinda Mahaffey Mullins (Jim) of Harmony; grandchildren, Tara Goodner of Statesville, Joshua Mullins (Gwyn) of Boone, NC, Ellie Mullins of Harmony; and sister, Alma Anello of Bramwell, WV.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 25 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Stafford Compton officiating.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends after 10 a.m. Feb. 25, 2006.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Clarksbury United Methodist Church in Harmony.

Della Lou Marrs

Della Lou Marrs, 86, of Tazewell, VA, died Feb. 16, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.

Born Mar. 1, 1919 in McDowell County, WV, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas Dye and Lydia Ellen Hess Dye.

She was a wonderful mother. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Braxton Duncan Marrs, Sr., seven sisters and two brothers.

Survivors: daughters, Bertha Bowman of Brewsterdale, WV, Helen McBride of Ceres, Betty Rose of Horsepen, Clara Baker of North Tazewell, Freda Eldreth of Tazewell; son, Braxton Marrs, Jr. of Boissevain; brothers, Charles Dye of Abbs Valley, John Lee Dye of Bishop; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Arnold Marrs officiating.

Burial followed at Brewsterdale Church cemetery in Brewsterdale.

Della Gross Mullins

Della Gross Mullins, 77, of Richlands, VA, died Feb. 14, 2006 at her home following a brief illness.

Born in Atwell, WV, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Mandy Brewster Gross, both West Virginia natives.

She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith. She had made her home in the Richlands area for the last 30 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Mullins; one daughter, Sandy Deel; five sons, Joe, Bobby, Clarence, Harvey, and Herman Mullins; one great grandson, Austin Ryan Mullins; one sister, Nellie Thompson; and four brothers, Richard, Jackie, Herman, and Basil Gross.

Survivors: daughters, Peggy Newberry and husband, Alvin, of Richlands, Goldie Harman of Phoenix City, AL; sons, Thurman Mullins and Jack Mullins and wife, Judy, all of Richlands, Richard Mullins of Raven, Nathan Mullins of Lawrenceville, Jerry Mullins and wife, Cynthia, of Indianapolis, IN; sisters, Patty Stanford and Jean Griffith, both of War, WV; 24 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Jack Keene and Rev. Jack Ward officiating.

Interment followed at the Esau-Rife cemetery near Keen Mountain.

Wedsel Sherdon Stacy

Wedsel Sherdon Stacy, 59, of Cedar Bluff, VA, died Jan. 30, 2006 at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

Born July 27, 1946 in Paynesville, WV, he was the son of the late Clarence and Della Mullins Stacy.

He was a minister who dedicated his life saving souls for God. He used his talent of music with the word of God to lead people into the kingdom of heaven. His greatest love besides God was his wife, Linda, an angel sent by God to help him through his life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Priscilla Stacy and Carolyn Stacy.

Survivors: wife of 24 years, Linda Joyce Stacy; sons, Jeffery Scott Perkins and wife, Rachel, of Sevierville, TN, Danny Wayne Stacy of Roanoke, Kenneth Ray Perkins and wife, Crystal, of Lebanon; brother, Coburn (Cobo) Stacy and wife, Mary, of Breaks; sisters, Rita (Katie) Stacy of Abingdon, Yolanda Harriet McClanahan and husband, James, of Grundy; grandchildren, William Romano of Richlands, Kimberly Romano of Townsend, TN; great granddaughter, Whittney Romano of Richlands; very special sisters-in-law, Dolly Ison and Ruby Joyce; and special nieces, Kimberly Mullins and Della (Liza) McClanahan.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Jerry Casey and Rev. Clinton Dales officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

A service was held Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Margleon M. Brown

Margleon M. Brown, 81, of Raven, VA, died Jan. 25, 2006 in a High Point, NC, hospital.

Born Oct. 19, 1924 in Winding Gulf, WV, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Hattie Lowe Harless.

She was a charter member of New Hope Assembly at Claypool Hill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roby Brown; one infant daughter; two brothers, Clyde Harless and Roy D. Harless; and one sister, Pearl Hopkins. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation.

Survivors: sons, Fred R. Brown and wife, Joan, of Bensenville, IL, Jack Brown and wife, Jan, of Belfast, Roger Brown and wife, Vickie, of High Point, NC, Tom A. Brown of Raven; daughters, Patricia Brown of Wilmington, NC, Debbie Snapp and husband, Randy, of Durham, NC; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and two special nephews, Wayne Hopkins and Earnie Hopkins.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Jan. 28 at New Hope Assembly at Claypool Hill with Rev. Claudie Throgmartin and Rev. Charles Casey officiating.

Entombment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial Mausoleum in Richlands.

Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff was in charge of arrangements.

Annabelle Hall

Annabelle Hall, 80, of Bluefield, VA, went home to be with Jesus Jan. 26, 2006 at the home of her daughter, Nancy Boyd, in Blountville, TN.

Born July 24, 1925 at Rainelle, WV, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Wilson Sheets and Lillie Mae Kincaid Sheets.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Larry Richard Hall; one brother, Jackson Sheets; two sisters, Jerlene Sheets and Faye Sheets; and step mother, Sally Sheets.

Survivors: loving husband of 62 years, John A. Hall; daughters, Nancy Boyd and husband, Melvin, of Blountville, TN, Jane Kendrick and husband, C.H., of Dublin, Carol Tibbs and husband, Ray, of Springville, Donna Bellini and husband, Pete, of Bluefield, WV, Sheila Thompson of Bristol, VA, Tammy Robinson and husband, Jeff, of Moore, OK; sons, Jimmy Roger Hall of North Tazewell, Ronald Hall and wife, Karen, of Springville, Wesley Hall and wife, Linda McGuire, of Saltville; sisters, Hazel Gordon of Rural Retreat, Maxine Stowers of Chilhowie; brother, Eddie Sheets of Rural Retreat; grandchildren, Steve, Rhonda, Kim, Kevin, J.J., Larry, Eric, Justin, Sheena, Anna Jean, Scott, Nikki, Shyla, Brittnee, and Patty; great grandchildren, Kayla, Jacob, Sara, Austin, Caleb, Christopher, and Megan; and her special kitty, Eisha.

Burial followed at Maple Hill cemetery in Bluefield, VA.
