Arvis Lee Keene

Arvis Lee Keene, 75, of Bluefield, VA, died Jan. 1, 2006 in a Princeton, WV hospital following a brief illness.

Born at McDowell County, WV, he was the son of the late Andy Poe Keene and Rosa Beavers Keene.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Velma Clara Keene; one brother, Andy Keene, Jr.; and one sister, Margaret Stumbo.

He was a retired coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A.

Survivors: daughters, Nancy Williams and husband, Ed, of Bland, Deborah Uhl and husband, Terry, of Bluefield, VA; sisters, Dorothy Hall of Troy, OH, and Ruth Keene; grandchildren, Angela Osborne, Heather Graham, Michelle Carter, Brad Adkins, Randy Williams, Jeff Williams and Sarah Riffe; 14 great grandchildren; a special K-9 companion Bridget; and a host of friends and neighbors.

The funeral will be conducted Jan. 4, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Phil Combs and Rev. Ted Anders officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Bluefield, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Preferred Hospice, P.O. Box 784 Richlands, VA 24641; Camp Evangel, 105 Camp Evangel Road, Pounding Mill, VA 24637, or a charity of choice.

Allamae Morgan Mays

Allamae Morgan Mays, 69, of Maxie, VA, died Dec. 26, 2005 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.

Born at Logan, WV, she was a daughter of the late Walter William and Omey Blizzard Morgan.

She had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was a member of Harman Freewill Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and a homemaker

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland L. Mays, April 19, 2001; one sister, Mabel Morgan; one brother, Edgar Morgan; and one half-brother, Frank Morgan.

Survivors: daughters, Judy and husband, Neal Schulte, of Rosebille, MI, Pamela and husband, David Fields, of Grundy, Sandra and husband, Joseph Johnson, of Davenport, Teresa Mays of Maxie; sons, Ricky and wife, Shelby Mays, of Big Rock, Roland and wife, Stephanie Mays, of Richlands; sister, Tribly Cline of Portsmouth, OH; brothers, William Morgan of Jackson, TN, Avery Morgan of Logan, WV; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren

The funeral was conducted Dec. 30, 2005, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Ronnie Sliger, Eddie Wilson, Bobby Ratliff and Danny Hess officiating.

Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.

Services were held Dec. 28 and 29, 2005 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Henry E. McDaniel, Jr.

Henry Edward McDaniel, Jr., 78, of Bluefield, VA, died Dec. 11, 2005 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born in Waiteville, WV, he was a son of the late Henry Edward McDaniel and Mattie Carr McDaniel.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Waiteville, served in the U.S. Army and was a construction worker for most of his life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Joshua Moody; three brothers, Harold, Jack and Leo McDaniel; and two sisters, Thelma McDaniel and Ozela Johnson.

Survivors: wife, Mary J. Lovell McDaniel; daughter, Debbie J. Moody of Richmond; son, Wayne Lawson of Princeton, WV; sisters, Cloretta Bradley of Oklahoma, Verdene Dixon of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Stephanie Crews, Tabatha Crews, Stanley Crews, Elizabeth Lawson and Angie Lawson; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 15, 2005 at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield with the Rev. Jerry Lester officiating.

Burial followed at the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Graveside services were conducted by Bluefield, Va. VFW Memorial Post 9696 and Pocahontas American Legion Post 14.

Robert H. Necessary

Robert H. Necessary, 90 of Tazewell, VA, died Dec. 26, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born March 17, 1915 at Yukon, WV, he was a son of the late Thomas Miller Necessary and Stella Loumattie Neal Necessary.

He was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell. He was a member of the first graduating class (1932) of Big Creek High School. He also was a member of the Tazewell Masonic Lodge #62 A.F. & A.M. and the U.M.W.A. Construction Workers Union.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Howard Necessary, Harry Necessary, Joe Necessary, and Alvin Necessary, and four sisters, Lula Ratliff, Thelma Penland, Verlie Necessary, and Leola Necessary.

Survivors: wife of 69 years, Lena Spence Necessary; son, Don A. Necessary, Sr. and wife, Beulah, of Bristol, VA; grandson, Don A. Necessary, Jr. and wife, Teresa, of Bristol, VA; granddaughters, Julia Necessary Bell and husband, Benny, of Abingdon, Patricia Necessary Turner and husband, Vince, of Bristol, TN; great granddaughters, Tiffany Necessary of Bristol, VA, Sydney Bell of Abingdon, Lauren Turner of Bristol, TN; brother, Kenneth W. Necessary, Sr. of Tannersville; and sister, Addie Necessary Freeman of Tazewell.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 30, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell with the Rev. Larry Ramey and Dr. Tom Conley officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where Masonic Graveside Rites were given by members of the Tazewell Masonic Lodge.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Lodina Beavers Powers

Lodina Beavers Powers, 79, of the Baptist Valley Community of North Tazewell, VA, went home to be with the Lord Dec. 25, 2005.

Born May 26, 1926 in McDowell County, WV, she was a daughter of the late John William and Nannie Asbury Beavers.

She was a member of the Calvary Assembly Church at Baptist Valley. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Louis Powers, Sr.; three sons, Eddie Dean Powers, Robert Fitzgerald Powers, and Freddie Wayne Powers; four sisters, Elsie Beavers, Sally Sizemore, Mary Wolfe, and Annie Williams; and three brothers, Bundy Beavers, Alma Beavers and John Beavers.

Survivors: daughters, Judy Faye Clark and husband, Frank, of Tazewell, Virginia Dare Hutton and husband, Claude, of Marion, Rosemary Powers of Lebanon, Linda Marie Childress and husband, Tim, of Bristol, VA; sons, Charlie Powers, Jr. and Jerry Lynn Powers, both of Tazewell, Delmar Hank Powers of Dry Fork, Michael Powers of Hillsville, David Gross of Richlands; brother, Graves Beavers of North Tazewell; grandchildren, Major Claude "Odge" Hutton, Jr., Melissa Bandy Patterson, Elizabeth Clark Birchfield, Melinda Hutton Vest, Tammy Powers, Matthew Childress and Daniel Childress; ten great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Dec. 29, 2005 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenny Gillespie, the Rev. Eugene Harold, and the Rev. Carl Blankenship officiating.

Burial followed in the Whitt cemetery, Lick Branch Road in Tazewell County.

Penny Gaye Billips

Penny Gaye Billips, 51, of Richmond, VA, formerly of Mudfork, died Dec. 20, 2005 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV.

Born April 6, 1954, at Bluefield, WV, she was a daughter of Earl H. Billips of Mudfork and the late Betty Lou Vance Billips, who died Dec. 16, 2005.

She was a member of the Mudfork Church of Christ. She was a graduate of Tazewell High School (Class of 1972) and Radford University. She was an elementary school teacher.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her sister, Marsha Billips Rew.

Additional survivors: sisters, Debra Hatfield and husband, Russ, of Bluefield, VA, Eva Bailey and husband, Randy, of Christiansburg; brothers, Robert Billips of Mudfork, Jeff Billips of Tazewell, Kevin Billips and wife, Chaney, of Aniston, AL; maternal grandmother, Ama A. Vance of Tazewell; nieces and nephews, Allen Hatfield, Amanda Eggleston, Kyle Bailey, Drew Bailey, Nikki Billips, Derek Billips, Tessa Billips, Isaac Billips, Tricia Rew, and Jeffery Billips, currently serving in the military in Iraq; great nieces and nephews, Savannah Eggleston and Ryan Rew.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Dec. 22 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Johnny Elmore officiating.

Entombment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA.

Brenda Sue Bogle

Brenda Sue Bogle, 50 of North Tazewell, VA, died December 26, 2005 at her home following a short illness.

Born October 21, 1955 in Welch, WV, she was a daughter of Lillie Asbury Baker of Baptist Valley, VA and the late Velt Baker. She graduated from Big Creek High School and was a LPN at the Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell. Brenda had made her home in Tazewell County for the past 27 years. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Daryl Wayne Baker of Horsepen.

Survivors in addition to her mother, include her husband, James G. Bogle, Jr.; one son, James G. Bogle, III of the home; three brothers, Randy Baker and wife, Pat of Bell Springs, VA, Buck Baker and wife, Yanna of Tazewell, Jerry Baker and wife, Ann of Horsepen; eight nieces and nephews, Bill Joe, Robert, Tammy, Shannon, Allen, Angie, Melissa, and Daryl Wayne; great nieces and nephews, Cody, Emily, Cheyene, Brandon, and Luke.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, with Pastor Arnold Marrs officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Herbert F. Bowman

Herbert Franklin Bowman, 76, of the Baptist Valley community in North Tazewell, VA, left to be with the Lord Dec. 21, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born March 16, 1929 in Filbert, WV, he was a son of the late Joseph and Princess Ellen Bowman.

He was of the Holiness faith. He was a retired coal miner of 36 years and was a member of the UMWA Local #6025 at Gary, WV, District #17.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Survivors: wife of 17 years, Stella Mullins Bowman; sons, Alvin Bowman of Monticello, GA, Lloyd Bowman of North Tazewell; daughter, Sue DeBord of McDonough, GA; sisters, Frances McLaren and Virginia Masek of Astoria, IL; brother, Roosevelt Bowman of Danville; grandchildren, Patricia Sweatman of Stockbridge, GA, Jeremy Puckett of Thomaston, GA, Michael Bowman of Thomasville, NC; great grandchildren, Ashley Bowman of Perryville, MD, Moriah White, Joshua White, and Britney Sweatman, all of Stockbridge, Kaitlin Puckett, Christopher Puckett, Dakota Puckett, and Savannah Puckett, all of Thomaston, Kendall Bowman and Matthew Bowman, both of Thomasville; great-great grandchild, Damian Skrivanek of Perryville, MD; and many friends.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Dec. 24 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Pastor Hobert Kennedy, Pastor Charlie Marrs, The Rev. Roy Lee Smith, and the Rev. John Canning officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Linnie Mullins

Linnie Mullins, 92, of Iaeger, WV, died Dec. 22, 2005 in a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Cordellia Viers Church.

She attended the Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sonny Mullins; two daughters, Virginia Mae Mullins and Dora Cooper; one infant daughter; one sister, Julie Keen; several brothers; and two grandchildren.

Survivors: son, Ashby Mullins of Compton Mountain; daughters, Carma Blevins of Iaeger, Norma Horn of Raven, Elsie Reed of Brenton, WV, Rita Bailey and Kay Bailey, both of Bluefield, WV, Ora Workman of Nemours, Gaynell Lester of Etowah, TN; sister, Vicy Compton of Compton Mountain. She leaves behind a well respected and special grandson who helped with her caretaking, Lawrence (Bubby) Blevins of Iaeger; 42 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Jack Ward officiating.

Burial followed in the Sonny Mullins cemetery at Compton Mountain.

A service was held Dec. 26 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alice McKinney Wells

Alice McKinney Wells, 80, of Tazewell, VA, died Dec. 21, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital following a brief illness.

Born March 28, 1925 at Hiwassee, WV, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Dewey and Gladys Jacobs McKinney.

She was a member of the Alexander United Methodist Church at Bishop. She retired from General Instrument Corporation and later from Pet Dairy Company.

Survivors: daughter, Deborah Wells Harman of Baptist Valley; brother, Donald G. McKinney and wife, Louise, of Tazewell; grandchildren, Curtis Harman and wife, Julie, of Cedar Bluff, Deana Harman of Bluefield, VA, Lisa Rowe and husband, Jason, of Greensboro, NC, Jennifer M. Harman of Bishop, Timothy D. Harman of Wytheville, Crystal Green and husband, Robert, of North Tazewell, Kevin A. Harman of North Tazewell; and nine great grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery Mausoleum at Bluewell, WV, with the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Ernie Willard Marrs

Ernie Willard Marrs, 73, of Squire, (Brewsterdale) WV, died Dec. 14, 2005 at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, WV.

Born Mar. 16, 1932 at Brewsterdale, he was a son of the late Oscar and Finnie Nunley Marrs.

He retired from Deskins Supermarket Warehouse with 20 years of service. He also worked at Tazewell Farm Bureau mill and store in Tazewell. He was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pearl Stevenson; one brother, Ray Marrs; and one niece, Linda Bowman.

Survivors: wife of 34 years, Virginia Bowman Marrs; son, Brian Marrs and wife, Jennifer Anderson Marrs, of Charleston; sisters, Edna Bowman of Martinsville, Loraine Bowman of Newhall, WV, Ella Lou Graham of Horsepen; and brother, Shirley Marrs of Brewsterdale.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenneth Gillespie officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
