Esther Sebastin

Esther Sebastin, 90, of Berwind, WV, died Aug. 25, 2006 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.

Born Dec. 8, 1915 at Perth Amboy, NJ, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Poch Gall.

She was a member of the Christ the King Catholic Church in War, WV, and was retired from the United States Postal Service after 20 years of employment as a Postal Clerk.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen J. Sebastin, and two brothers, Steve Gall and Alec Gall.

Survivors: daughter, Kathryn Conrad and husband, David, of Columbus, OH; special niece, Debbie Davidson and husband, Marvin, of Tazewell; brother, John Gall of Warriormine, WV; sister, Helen Hamro of Oakwood; grandchildren, Matthew Conrad and wife, Tracey, of Athens, OH, Cristine Shaheen and husband, Michael, of Reynoldsburg, OH; great grandchildren, Ben and Abbey Conrad and Sam Shaheen; special great niece, Sarah Davidson of Princeton, WV; and special great nephew, Stephen Davidson of Danville.

A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at 1 p.m. Aug. 28 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Father Tan Viet Nguyen officiating.

Burial followed at the Hartwell cemetery in Hartwell, WV.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 1808 Jefferson Street, Bluefield, WV 24701.

Glen Elwood Young, Sr.

Glen Elwood Young, Sr., 77, of Squire, WV, died Aug. 27, 2006 at his home after a long battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 19, 1929 in River Rouge, MI, he was a son of the late Kenneth Ray Young and Daisy Beavers Young.

He was a retired motorman with Consolidated Coal Company, having been employed with them for 39 years. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War, who loved camping and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Young, and one son, Glen E. Young, Jr.

Survivors: son, Darrell Lane and wife, Vikki, of Summerville, SC; daughters, Brenda Hall and husband, J.R., of Jacksonville, FL, Sheila Beavers and husband, Roger, of Squire; brother, Donald Young of Marion; sisters, June Denoff and husband, Frank, of Lansing, WV, Irlene Woods and husband, Junior, of Joppa, MD, Joyce Pertee of Dearborn, MI; grandchildren, Stephanie Hall, Jodie Bryant, Heather Lane, and Shane Young; and great grandchildren, Jacob Newman and London Newman.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 29 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Tim Boyd and the Rev. Mary Osborne officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Ada Justice

Ada Justice, 81, of North Tazewell, VA, died Aug. 8, 2006 at her home.

Born Dec. 25, 1924 in McDowell County, WV, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Rebecca Stacy Mullins.

Prior to her illness, she was a very active member of the Calvary Baptist Chapel at Witten’s Mill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Justice, and three sisters, Sadie Harrison, Vada Mullins, and Patsy Mullins.

Survivors: daughters, Scarlett Kessinger of Princeton, WV, Bonita Berge and husband, Larry of North Tazewell, Charlotte Durham and husband, Jessie (Bud), of Claypool Hill, Donita Horn and husband, Bob, of Grundy; grandchildren, Tammy Pearson and husband, Rick, of Princeton, WV, Shawn Durham and wife, Tamitha, of Claypool Hill, Chad Durham and wife, Aileen, of Roanoke; great grandchildren, Lee Pearson and Savannah Pearson of Princeton, WV, Isabella Durham, Allea Durham, and Lou Anna Durham, all of Claypool Hill, Jackson Durham and Sophie Durham of Roanoke; step great grandchildren, Brandon Rower and Lauren Rower, both of Florida; and special friend and neighbor, Eunice Robinette of North Tazewell.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 11 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Joyce Tedder officiating.

Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Vernie Lee Little

Vernie Lee Little, 86, of Lester, WV, died Aug. 8, 2006 at Heartland of Beckley in Beckley, WV, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Grayson County, he was the son of the late Ambrose and Dorothy Roop Little.

He had spent most of his life in Tazewell and had served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. He was a retired coal miner and was a foreman for Poca Fuel Company. He was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Mattie "Buck" Little; three brothers, Earl, John, and Darrell Little; and one daughter; Karen Ann Little.

Survivors: daughters, Jeanne Darlene Varvel and husband, Rus, of Fillmore, IN, Suzie Little of Doran; sons, Donald Lee Little and wife, Lola, of Hillsboro, IN, John A. Little of Lebanon; sisters, Reba Hurley of Rockville, Mayleen Puckett of Greencastle, IN, Nora Lee Horn of Cedar Bluff, Pauline Mazmanion of London, KY, Barbara Vick of Bellville, MI; brothers, Arthur Little of Baptist Valley, Bill Little and Harold Little, both of Bellville; special friend, Lucille Byrd; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 12 at 1 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Minister Conn Edwards officiating.

Interment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Daniel Boone Stevenson

Daniel Boone Stevenson, 78, of Tazewell, VA, formerly of Bluefield, VA, died Aug. 8, 2006 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.

Born Oct. 15, 1927 in Yards, WV, he was a son of the late Clarence William Stevenson and Lena Mae Lowery Stevenson.

He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. He enjoyed participating in area flea markets for many years prior to his declining health.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years on July 20, 2006, Ellen Ruth Brown Stevenson; one granddaughter, Melissa Ann Thomas; one sister, Annie Stevenson Austin; and two brothers, Roy Stevenson and James Matthew Stephenson.

Survivors: sons, Michael Stevenson of Bluefield, VA, Danny Ray Stevenson of Mt. Olive, WV; daughters, Margaret Thomas and husband, Carl, of Bluefield, VA, Linda Sarver and husband, James, and Frances Combs, all of Brushfork, WV; sisters, Pauline Stevenson Baumgartner and husband, Frank, of Roanoke, Rachael Stevenson Hilliard of Bluefield, VA; brothers, William Lee Stephenson and companion, Navella Myers, of Germanton, NC, Norman Stephenson and wife, Vivian, of Daytona Beach, FL, Robert Lee Stevenson and wife, Betty, of Falls Mills, Jerry Joe Stevenson and wife, Sandra, of Nemours, WV, Ralph Stevenson and wife, Barbara, of Glasgow, John W. Stephenson and wife, Ella, of Claremont, and June Stephenson and wife, Maxine, of Bluefield, WV; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Eugene Gates officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Gregory Ray Bryant

Gregory Ray Bryant, 52, of Roanoke, formerly of Tazewell, died July 31, 2006 at Avante Nursing Home in Roanoke.

Born at Bluefield, WV, he was a son of the late William "Bill" Vernon Bryant, Sr. and Wilma Jean Price Bryant.

He had made his home in Roanoke for the past nine years and before that in Tazewell. He was disabled all his life. He had attended Dunford Town Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, William Vernon Bryant, Jr.

Survivors: aunt, Margie Gibson of Tazewell; uncles, Bobby Price of North Tazewell, Frank Price of Bishop; and several cousins.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 2 at 12:30 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Brother Wayne Poston officiating.

Interment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, VA.

Robert E. Gilley

Robert E. Gilley, 75, of New Richmond, WV, went home to be with the Lord Aug. 5, 2006, after a long hard fought battle.

Born July 8, 1931, at Davy, WV, he was the son of the late Earl Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Bailey Gilley.

He was a retired coal miner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Eugene Gilley.

Survivors: sons, Gary Gilley and wife, Patty, of Columbus, OH, Earl Gilley and wife, Tabiatha, of Copen, WV; daughters, Vickie Kidd and husband, Chuck, of Maben, WV, Linda Roberts and companion, James Asbury, of Richlands, Mary Robinson and husband, Heath, of Fayetteville, WV, Tressia Boyd and husband, Jerald, of Cedar Bluff, Theresa Honaker and husband, Steve, of Richlands; longtime companion and friend, Polly Gaye Gilley and her children, John Jones of Morristown, TN, Rachel Watts of Daniels, WV and Rhonda Tilley of Oceana, WV; brothers, Danny Gilley and wife, Sadie, of Man, WV, Kenneth Gilley and wife, Freda, and Ernest Gilley and wife, Edith, all of Clear Fork, WV; sister, Ida Mae Childers of Surf City, SC; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren

The service was conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 8 at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel in Pineville, WV, with the Rev. Tommy Knotts officiating.

Burial followed in Gilley Family cemetery, Clear Fork, WV.

Mary Margaret Johnson

Mary Margaret Johnson, 86, of the Big Creek section of Richlands, VA, died Aug. 1, 2006 in a Lebanon retirement home.

Born in Mayberry, WV, she was the daughter of the late Kelly and Rurie Hickman Crigger.

She had made her home in the Richlands area most of her life and was a member of West Fork Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Johnson, and four sisters, Gertrude C. Shell, Anne Copper, Dickie Crigger, and Hazel Crigger Lane.

Survivors: daughters, Sarah Sluss and husband, Joe, of Gray, TN, Wanda Wade and husband, Robert, of Loganville, GA, Linda Whitt and husband, Herman, of Ashland, Betty Lee Lane and husband, Jim, of Jonesboro, TN; sons, Ken Johnson and wife, Sarah, of Abingdon, Raymond Johnson and wife, Juanita, of Richlands, Danny (Butch) Johnson and wife, Linda, of Salem; sister, Dorothy Frazier of Kingsport, TN; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Rick Herald and Rev. Bill Fletcher officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Ruth I. Presley

Ruth I. Presley, 79, of the Baptist Valley area of North Tazewell, VA, died Aug. 5, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born Aug. 25, 1926 in McDowell County, WV, she was a daughter of Goldie Rose of North Tazewell and the late George W. Rose.

She was a faithful member of Central Church of Christ in Baptist Valley.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Presley.

Survivors: mother, Goldie Rose of North Tazewell; sons, Ronald Presley and wife, Barbara, of North Tazewell, Roger Presley of Squim, WA; brothers, Don Rose and wife, Hester, and Harold "Sonny" Rose and wife, Faye, all of North Tazewell; sisters, Juanita Murray of Ocala, FL, Marie Stone and husband, Ralph, of Nashville, TN, Pauline Clance and husband, Lanier, of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Edward Presley and wife, Joy, of Maurertown, Ronda Veltema and husband, Ben, of Byron Center, MI; and great grandchildren, Kallin Presley, Jakob Presley, and Emma Veltema.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 7 at 8 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell. The service was conducted by Mrs. Presley’s family.

The committal service followed Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA.

Hattie Mae Price

Hattie Mae Price, 67, of Welch, WV, formerly of Grundy, and Bristol, TN, died July 31, 2006 at Welch Community Hospital, following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Pearl Carton Graybeal of Richlands, and the late George McCoy.

She was a resident of Buchanan County for several years and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She had been employed as a hostess, cashier and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee (Yogi) Price – July 31, 2000; one infant brother; special friend and caregiver, Cathy Noe of Welch, WV; and special C.N.A., Jackie Sluss of Mercer County.

Survivors: daughter, Belinda Carr of Welch, WV; sister, Margaret C. (Judy) McCoy of South Park, PA; grandchildren, Tanisha Carr of Welch, WV, George Carr, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; and great-grandchildren, Tia, Tariq and Timothy Carr, Welch, WV.

Mausoleum services were conducted Aug. 2 at 12 noon at Forest Hill Mausoleum, Forest Hill cemetery, Abingdon, by Evg. Mike Rife.

Entombment followed in Forest Hill Mausoleum.

Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy was in charge of all arrangements.

Osie Alva Smith

Osie Alva Smith, 93, of Culpeper, VA, died July 31, 2006 at the Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Oct. 12, 1912 in Welch, WV, to the late James Samuel and Betty Brewster Mullins.

She was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arvin Smith; two sons, Harry R. Smith and Ronnie Smith; three brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors: son, Harold Smith and wife, Doris, of Richmond; daughters-in-law, Mary Smith of Stafford, Barbara Smith of Cleveland, OH; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Aug. 4 at 1 p.m. at the Smith Family cemetery on Smith Ridge in Tazewell County with Pastor Jerry Casey officiating.

Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper was in charge of arrangements.
