Charles "Chuck" Bohon

Charles "Chuck" Bohon, 72, of Oakwood, VA, departed this life July 5, 2006.

He suffered a stroke in 1994 and was cared for at home by his loving family. Born May 7, 1934 in Princeton, WV, he was the son of the late William O. Bohon, Sr. and Ruth Pettrey Bohon and step mother, Agnes Bohon.

He was a retired accountant for Jewell Smokeless. He was a member of Oakwood Presbyterian Church and Boy Scout National Council of America. He was a Kentucky Colonel, served on the board of directors for Buchanan General Hospital, and treasurer of Virginia Mining Institute. He was an avid sports fan, the "Voice of the Dragons", announcing many football and basketball games. He was a loving husband, dad, grandfather and best friend.

Survivors: wife of 53 years, Anna Wade Bohon; daughters, Harty Loria and husband, Mark, of Rochester, NY, Jennilyn Quillen and husband, Mike, of Kingsport, TN; sons, Charles D. (Buzz) Bohon, Jr. and wife, Genny, of Cedar Bluff, Joe Bohon and wife, Patricia, of Greeneville, TN, Paul Bohon and wife, Dara, of Bristol, VA; brother, Bill Bohon, Jr. of Hampton; sister, Geraldine Owens of Abingdon; grandchildren, Charles Bohon III, Jessika Bohon, Ashley Bohon, Dustin Bohon, Mark Loria, Anna Loria, Haley Bohon, Luke Bohon and Reese Bohon; and special friend, Harold Creed.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. July 8 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Charles Claude Elswick

Charles Claude Elswick, 79, a resident of the Reynolds Ridge section of Bandy, VA, died July 7, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Caretta, WV, he was the son of the late Charles Robert and Sally Harman Elswick.

He was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was a retired coal miner and truck driver. He was a member of Reynolds Ridge Community Church and of UMWA Local #7327 Jewell Valley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors: his loving wife, Edith Fletcher Elswick; daughter, Teresa Duncan and husband, Timothy, of San Antonio, TX; sons, Donnie Charles Elswick and wife, Barbara, of Bandy, Robert Elswick and wife, Beverly, of Mechanicsville; sister, Viola Howard of Ohio; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. July 10 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with Rev. Paul Crawford officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Members of Casey Short VFW Post #9640 conducted military graveside rites.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Reynolds Ridge Community Church, 103 Reynolds Ridge Road, Bandy, VA 24602.

Anthony (A.R.) Simpson

Anthony Randell (A.R.) Simpson, 20, of Bluefield-Tazewell Rd., Bluefield, VA, died July 1, 2006 at his home.

Born in Bluefield, WV, he was the son of A M Randall Simpson of Bluefield-Tazewell Rd. and Kimberly Dawn Reed Mullens of Princeton.

He was employed at R & S Coal Co. in Keystone, was a 2004 graduate of Graham High School and attended church at the Mountain View Church of Christ in Springville.

Additional survivors: stepmother, Rebecca Simpson; stepfather, Charles Mullens; brothers, Mark Anthony Huffman of the home, Alex Mullens of Princeton, WV; grandparents, Robert and Mossie Simpson of Bluefield-Tazewell Rd., North Tazewell, Carol Reed and John Vassallo of Montcalm, Carl Reed and wife, Brenda, of Brushfork, James and Tia Coburn of Greenvalley, Mike and Paula McPherson of Smithfield, James and Bernice Mullens of Princeton; uncles, Robert Kinder and wife, Robin, of Bluefield-Tazewell Rd., North Tazewell, Brent Reed and wife, Teresa of Princeton; and a host of extended family.

The funeral was conducted July 6 at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View Church of Christ with Minister Garfield Cooper and Minister Bill Boyd officiating.

Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1808 Jefferson St., Bluefield, WV, 24701.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA, was in charge of arrangements.

Lucy Sandra Kutz

Lucy Sandra Kutz, 67, of Inverness, FL, and formerly from Bluefield, VA, died May 27, 2006 at Citrus Health Care System in Florida.

She was a native of Glen Rogers, WV, and was a daughter of the late Earl Erskine, Jr. and Ann Erskine.

She was formerly employed as a clerk by Mack Trucks in Winnsboro, SC, for 14 years and then worked as a clerk at Walgreens in Citrus Hills for two years. She was of the Protestant faith and enjoyed working with her flowers and gardening in her yard.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Thompson in Oct. 2005, and by one stepson, Edward Kutz in 1994.

Survivors: husband of eight years, Robert E. Kutz of Inverness; son, Mark Thompson and wife, Kimberly, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; daughter, Sherri Jones and husband, William, of Winnsboro; stepdaughter, Cheryl Wagner and husband, Joseph, of Deltona, FL; brother, Earl Erskine III and wife, Sherry, of Bluefield, VA; sister, Marilyn Miller of Rockville, MD; brother-in-law, Chares T. Kutz and wife, Ann, of Allentown, PA; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral was conducted June 3 at 12 noon at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.

Burial followed in the Monte-Vista cemetery in Green Valley, Bluefield.

Okey E. McClanahan, Sr.

Okey E. McClanahan, Sr., 61 of Abingdon, VA, formerly of Richlands, died May 29, 2006 at a Health Care Center in Lebanon following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Verner, WV, and was the son of the late Stuart E. McClanahan and Pauline Mitchell Woosley.

He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands and Abingdon areas and was a mechanic for Jack Sykes Chevrolet in Richlands for 25 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Chester McClanahan.

Survivors: sons, Okey E. "Sam" McClanahan, Jr. and wife, Kelley, and Tobin Shane McClanahan and wife, Tammy, all of Abingdon, Barry Keith McClanahan of Shippensburg, PA; step-father: Hassell Woosley, Sr. of Richmond; sisters, Martha Elder and husband, Dave, and Paula Wells and husband, Lloyd, all of Richmond; brother, Hassell Woosley, Jr. and wife, Carol, of Richmond; special friends, Staff of Maple Grove Rehabilitation Health Care Center; grandchildren, Brandie Matney, Danielle Johnson, Rachel McClanahan, Kourtni McClanahan and Okey "Trey" McClanahan III; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conduced May 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands.

Interment was held June 1 at 11 a.m. at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

Inge W. McGuire

Inge W. McGuire, 70, of Squire, WV, died June 4, 2006 at Tazewell.

Born Sept. 14, 1935 in Wiesbaden, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Hermann and Maria Otterbein Elsenberger.

She was Committee Chairperson for the Women of the Moose, Chapter #1803 of the Tazewell Moose Lodge #198. She was also a member of the Tazewell Liars Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon B. McGuire; one sister, Gisela Fletcher; and two brothers, Horst Elsenberger and Dieter Elsenberger.

Survivors: daughter, Maria V. "Sissy" Lawson of Radford; sons, Eric Robert McGuire of North Tazewell, Harry Dieter McGuire of Roanoke; sister, Maria Pillsbury of Saginaw, MI; brother, Winfried Elsenberger of Wiesbaden, Germany; grandchildren, Eric G. McGuire, Amy M. Lawson, McKenzy McGuire, and Noah McGuire; and special friends, Sue Puckett, Libby Kiser and Dale Meadows, all of Tazewell.

The family will receive friends at the Tazewell Moose Lodge from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. June 8, where a memorial service, along with a special recognition by the Women of the Moose, will be conducted at 7 p.m. with Pastor Curtis Shrader officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Women of the Moose Chapter #1803, PO Box 337, Tazewell, VA 24651.

Gene E. Farris

Gene Edwin Farris, 77, of Tazewell, VA, died May 24, 2006 at a Bristol, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born at Red Jacket, WV, he was a son of the late A. L. and Maxine Martin McMens, Russell County.

He was a graduate of Richlands High School, Class of 1949. He had made his home in the Tazewell area for the past 24 years and was a Supervisor for Clinch River Corporation. He was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, lifetime member of the Moose Lodge and a former Mason. He was a veteran of W.W.II, serving in the U. S. Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Wright and one brother, John Ellis Farris. He was the last member of his immediate family.

Survivors: wife, Maria L. Farris; daughters, Elaine Farris and Laura Farris, both of Bristol, VA; son, David Farris and wife, Tiffany, of Lexington, NC; grandchildren, Shanda Poore and husband, Jeff, Neyia Beavers and husband, Shawn, Emily Stevenson, John Stevenson and Jayden Farris; and great grandchildren, Johnathan, Justin, and Alicia Poore.

Services were conducted May 27 at 2 p.m. at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Tazewell with Father Dan Brady officiating.

Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

Casey-Short VFW Post #9640 of Richlands conducted military graveside rites.

Friends called at the church May 26 from 6 to 8 p.m., where the funeral followed at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Teresa’s Catholic Church Building Fund, 304 Tazewell Ave., Tazewell, VA 24651.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

James J. (Junior) Hays

James J. (Junior) Hays, 77, of Cedar Bluff, VA, died peacefully at Wake Medical Center of Raleigh, NC, May 18, 2006.

He was born Jan. 19, 1929, in Ethel, WV and was the son of the late John Reece Hays and Alice Bise.

He was a retired truck driver for Banana Supply Company of West Palm Beach, FL.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Gaila Lynn Hays Osborne, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors: devoted wife of 47 years, Alice Pruett Hays; daughters, Lisa and husband, David, Lesley Hall and husband, Michael; and grandchildren, Jared, Christopher, Jacob and Sara and Ethan and Logan Hall.

In keeping with his wishes, a private viewing was conducted May 21 at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Junior’s favorite charity.

Singleton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Okey E. McClanahan, Sr.

Okey E. McClanahan, Sr., 61 of Abingdon, VA, formerly of Richlands, died May 29, 2006 at a Health Care Center in Lebanon following a lengthy illness.

Jerry Blaine Parsons

Jerry Blaine Parsons, 68, of Burlington, NC, departed this earth May 7, 2006 in Burlington after a long illness.

Born Jan. 9, 1938 at Berwind, WV, he was the son of the late Alvin (Ike) Parsons and Edith Waldron Parsons.

He played football for the Tazewell Bulldogs.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, PFC Terry Lee Parsons, who was killed in action June 20, 1968 in Vietnam.

Survivors: wife of 51 years, Vernie (Bunky) Beavers Parsons; sons Dennis, Bruce, Garry, Barry, Jeffrey, Steven, and Kevin; grandchildren, Natalie, Lucas, Tonya, Brian, Alan, Candace, Roslynn, Veronica, Jonathan, Jordan, Paul, Emelia, and Samantha; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service was conducted May 11 at Glen Rest Memorial Estate in Reynoldsburg, OH.

He is interred next to his brother.
