Betty Jo Billips Runyon Stark

Betty Jo Billips Runyon Stark, 82, of North Tazewell, VA, died Apr. 19, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born April 6, 1924 in Anawalt, WV, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Martha Bowman Billips.

She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Chapel at North Tazewell. She retired from the Bank of Tazewell County in Tazewell and was a member of the Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Basil Runyon, and one brother, Harry Elwood Billips.

Survivors: husband, Alvin Stark; nephew, Harry Dean Billips; niece, Brenda Neumann; great nephew, Stephen Lane; great great nephews, Joshua and Colin Lane; sister-in-law, Virginia Moore and husband, J.C. Moore; and many friends.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Apr. 22 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Dr. Chuck Trent officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Biddie P.R. Jackson

Biddie Patricia Runyon Jackson, 61, of Chester, VA, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 26, 2015 surrounded by her family. She was born on August 30, 1953 in Logan, West Virginia. A loving wife and mother, her faith, kindness, love and compassion has left an overwhelming and everlasting mark on this world. She dedicated her life to serving the Lord and her family. She is preceded in death by her father, Don Runyon, and mother, Aloma McCoy Runyon.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, George W. Jackson; son, John E. Jackson and his wife DeAnn, and their three children, Berkley, Faith and Bryce of Chester; daughters, Aloma J. Holsten and her husband Brent, and their three children, Jackson, Addison and Declan of Henrico, and Virginia D.J. Fink and her husband Jimmy, and their three children, Shelby, Koty, and Hope of Chesterfield; four brothers, Don Runyon (Cindy) of Chester, Ronald Runyon (Toney) of Delbarton, W, Va., David Runyon (Barbara) of Lake, W.Va., and Vernal Runyon (Kim) of Chapmanville, W.Va.; one sister, Tammy Elizabeth Hodge (Howard) of Delbarton, W.Va., 18 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will be held Monday, June, 29, from 5-8 p.m. at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda, . The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, at Clarksbury United Methodist Church, Deltaville.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (https://www.ocrf.org) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org), which was a cause dear to her heart that she donated to every month.

Nasba G. Buckland

Nasba Geneva Buckland, 83, of Honaker, VA died Jan. 13, 2004 at her home.

Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late William and Mary Elizabeth Cundiff Wheatley.

She was a member of the Honaker Methodist Church and the Countess Rebekah Lodge and a past member of the Eastern Star. She was the former owner of Geneva’s Café. She loved church and enjoyed writing countless beautiful songs and poems that she always enjoyed sharing with others.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Georgia Hubbard, Alma Stinson, Judy Fuller and Virginia Dellus; and two brothers, James Wheatley and George "Buddy" Wheatley.

Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, L.W. and Ann Hale of Honaker; son and daughter-in-law, David and Charo Buckland of Elkton, MD; grandchildren, Brenda Meadwell, Nancy Keen, Karen Lowe, Charles Buckland, Tony Buckland and Carmen Krone; great-grandchildren, Jacob Coleman, Allie Lowe, Charles Buckland, Curtis Buckland and Haley Krone; step-great-grandchildren, Kayla Keen, Eathan Wyatt and Devan Wyatt; brother, William Wheatley of Eden, NC; sisters, Mary Frances Stultz of Eden, Getty Stinson of Alexandria; special caregiver and friend, Betsy Ball; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Mike Ward and Rev. Stephen Musick officiating.

Interment followed in the Clark cemetery at Honaker.

Sylvia E. Graham

Sylvia Elizabeth Graham, 85, of North Tazewell, VA, died Dec. 18, 2003, at Eastview Adult Care in Bluefield, VA.

Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Ruth Spence Blankenship.

She was a member of the Adria Advent Christian Church in Adria.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Percy Graham; one sister, Gladys Shagusnessy; and two brothers, Sherman Whitt and Allen Whitt.

Survivors: son, Blaine Graham and wife, Ruth, of Pinehurst, NC; daughters, Dianne Graham of Altamonte Springs, FL, Connie Honaker and husband, Jim, of North Tazewell; brothers, Wade Whitt of Baptist Valley, Garnett Whitt of North Tazewell; sisters, Elsie Graham of North Tazewell, Hazel Tuck and Shirley Morgan, both of Cleveland, OH, Clara Taylor of North Tazewell; grandchildren, James Honaker, Jr., David Honaker, and Cindy Graham; and great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jared, and Alecia.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Dec. 20 at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell with the Rev. Don Elswick officiating.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth K. Sigman

Elizabeth Kersey Sigman, 91, of Dubuque, IA, died Aug. 12, 2004 at Luther Manor Nursing and Retirement Center.

Born in West Virginia Sept. 8, 1912, she was the daughter of the late John Lawrence and Blanche (Rositer) Kersey.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John L. and Frank N. Kersey, and three sisters, Virginia K. Monie, Josephine K. Campbell and Nancy K. Harman.

She attended Bluefield College, Bluefield, VA, and graduated from Concord College in Athens, WV, where she was a member of the Delta Sigma Epsilon National Sorority.

She was formerly married to James D. Bane of Bluefield, WV, who died in 1953. She came to Dubuque in March in 1956 as Fashion Coordinator and Buyer of Roshek's Department Store. She married Allan E. Sigman June 13, 1962. He died in April of 1986.

Civic and church work was important to her. She was past president of the Hillcrest Family Service's Board, a founder of the Hillcrest Service League, and the Things and Things Shop. She was a member of First Congregational Church, past president of their Women's Fellowship and a former member of the Board of Trustees. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of Finley Hospital and a member of Sunshine Circle; a member of G.E. Chapter P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Dubuque Golf and Country Club.

A passionate and admired chef, she shared her favorite recipes with family, friends and the community in her "Cooking for the Gentry" recipe book in 1982.

Survivors: daughters, Beverly (Mel) Graves of Dubuque, Beth Baker of Tazewell; stepsons, William (Rita) Sigman of Indianapolis, IN, James A. (Shirley) Sigman of Dubuque; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Dubuque.

Burial was in Linwood cemetery.

Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home in Dubuque was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to First Congregational Church, Hospice of Dubuque, Luther Manor Nursing and Retirement Home or the Finley Hospital Health Foundation.

Cora Lee Perdue

Cora Lee Perdue, 90, of Mavisdale, VA, died June 27, 2004 at her residence, following a lengthy illness.

Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Viola Hamilton Lambert.

She was a member of the Keen Mountain Free Pentecostal Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Filmore Perdue, three sisters, five brothers, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Survivors: sons, Donald Gene Perdue and wife, Irma, of Manassas, Roger Lee Perdue and wife, Betty, of Alexandria; daughters, Eileen Fleming and husband, Maynard, and Charlotte Rowe and husband, James, all of Manassas, Peggy Charles and husband, Willy, of Oakwood; brother, Arthur Lambert of Beckley, WV; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; her church family; and a host of friends.

The funeral was conducted June 29 at 2 p.m. at the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Randy Webb and Rev. Jerry Matney, Jr. officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

An evening service was held June 28 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Leland Ira Sutherland

Leland Ira Sutherland, 75, of the New Garden Road section of Honaker, VA, died Dec. 7, 2005 at his home.

Born July 21, 1930 in West Virginia, he was a son of the late Hollin Milton and Mable Inez Boyd Sutherland.

He had lived in the Honaker area since 1978 and had served in the United States Army and United States Air Force. He attended Barnes Chapel in Abingdon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Raymond Sutherland, Craig Allen Sutherland, and Boyd Milton Sutherland, and two sisters, Rebecca Ruth S. Mullins and Willie Faye S. Drennen.

Survivors: sons, Donnie Sutherland of Ohio, Ronnie Sutherland of Mississippi; sisters, Irene S. Thompson of Honaker and his twin sister, Leona Iris S. Finch of South Carolina; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Stafford Compton officiating.

Interment followed in the Sutherland cemetery at Finney.

Naomi Jewell Bullion

Naomi Jewell Bullion, 89, of Whitewood, VA, died Dec. 19, 2005 in a Lebanon nursing home following a lengthy illness.

Born in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Mary Elizabeth Hagerman Jewell, both Buchanan County natives.

She had made her home in the Whitewood area most of her life and was a retired Postmaster at Jewell Valley. She was also a former employee of the Buchanan County School System and was a member of the Shelter Free Will Baptist Church in Whitewood.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Silas A. "Kingsport" Bullion; two sisters, Madge Cole and Watie Collins; and eight brothers, A.B. "Buck", John, Bill, Elbert, Oliver, Eugene, Roy, and Charles Jewell.

Survivors: daughters, Linnie Hackworth and husband, Junior, and Christine Cole and husband, Earl, all of Whitewood; sister, Ruby Fuller of Whitewood; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends and caregivers, staff of the Maple Grove Nursing Home.

The funeral will be conducted Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Earl Cole and Bro. Columbus Baker, Jr. officiating.

Interment will follow at the White-Jewell Family cemetery on White Mountain near Jewell Valley.

Arlie Junior Cardwell

Arlie Junior Cardwell, 62 of Richlands, VA, died Oct. 15, 2006 at a Richlands area hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Rock, West Virginia and was the son of the late Cyrus and Sally Mae Cardwell, both Princeton, West Virginia natives. Arlie worked as a coal miner for 37 years, 28 of that for Island Creek/Consol Coal Company, before retiring in 2005. Mr. Cardwell and his wife Darlene, took their marriage vows very seriously and were united in love for 39 ˝ years. He was a loving husband and father and good provider for his family.

Mr. and Mrs. Cardwell were members of the Bible Way Church in Raven and loved their pastor and his wife, the Rev. Dannie Short and Mae Short and all their church family.

Mr. Cardwell was a man that loved God and his family with all his heart, and he and his wife walked the last mile together. He may be gone, but is not forgotten. He is absent from body, but present with the Lord. His wife Darlene knows when God calls her home they will be reunited and walk many more miles together. Their wish for their family is to see their children and grandchildren saved, so the circle will not be broken and they can all be one happy family again in Heaven. In Jesus name, they pray their wish fulfilled.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Basil Cardwell.

Survivors include his loving wife, Darlene Cardwell of Richlands; daughter, Jarika Darlene Lawson of Tennessee; sons, Laymon Darrell Sasser, Jr.and fiancé Yolonda of Bossier City, Louisiana and Arlie Anthony Cardwell of Tazewell; sisters, Goldie Darlene Cardwell and Louise Cardwell, both of Illinois; brothers, Arthur Cardwell and wife Sally of Bluefield and Bernard Dale Cardwell of Richlands; grandchildren, Laymon Darrell Sasser III of Bossier City, Joseph Michael Sasser of South Carolina, and Megan Miranda Lawson of Pineville, Kentucky.

Funeral services for Arlie J. Cardwell will be held Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Dannie Short officiating.

Ethel Mae Mullins

Ethel Mae Sweeney Mullins, 72, of Grace Health Care in Abingdon, VA, formerly of the Compton Mountain section of Buchanan County, went home to be with the Lord Aug. 19, 2006 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, following a long illness.

Born in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Bill and Lula Bell Sweeney.

She was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith and was a member of the Rosa Cole Pentecostal Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a very special grandson, Joel Owens, two sisters, one brother and her pastor, Brother Joe Gross.

Survivors: daughters, Betty Owens and husband, Carl, and Orpha Kelly and husband, Bill, of Pilgrim Knob, Pat Joyce and husband, Steve, and Peggy Joyce and husband, Johnny, of Claypool Hill, Nancy Nichols and husband, Shannon, of Abingdon, Rhonda Alley and husband, Kenneth, of Hillsville; sons, Bobby Mullins and wife, Debbie, of Thompson Valley, Elmer Mullins and wife, Jennifer, of Jewell Ridge; brothers, Bill, Henry, Cleve and Benny Sweeney; sisters, Bessie McKenzie, Frances Lester, Katherine Johnson and Rosetta Fain; grandchildren, Chad Owens, Daniel Kelly, Savannah, Hunter and Nathaniel Mullins, Jaren Nichols, Crystal Wimmer, Derick Joyce, Sunshine Wilmoth, Sommer Griffith, Benjamin Nichols, Travis, Angel and Morgan Mullins, Tiffany, Joshua, Jacob and McKenzie Alley: and a host of friends.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Luther Rife and Rev. Lawrence Horn officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Services were held at the funeral home Aug. 20 and 21 at 7 p.m.

Evelyn Virginia Bird Canterbury

Evelyn Virginia Bird Canterbury, 86, of Bluefield, VA, was dead on arrival at Bluefield Regional Medical Center May 21, 2006.

Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late James Oswald and Ella Wheeler Bird.

She was a former resident of the Berwind Briquet Camp section in Berwind. She was a lifelong Christian, was a former member of the Berwind United Methodist Church and a member of the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, VA. She was also a past member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was the wife of the late Ralph Kellis Canterbury, Sr., and the sister of the late Paul Kenton Bird.

Survivors: sons, Ralph Kellis Canterbury, Jr. of Damascus, AR, Richard Norris Canterbury of the residence; daughters, Linday Kay Canterbury Cox of Murfreesboro, TN, Rena Haynes Gibson of Chincoteague Island; sisters, Clarice Mildred Bird Cook of Martinsville, Eula Faye Branson of Beckley, WV; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

A Christian funeral service was held May 26 at 10 a.m. at the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Goodman officiating.

She was interned at the Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Flowers are accepted or memorial gifts may be given to the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church or to any worthy cause.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA was in charge of arrangements.

Wilburn Eugene "Gene" Meadows

Wilburn Eugene "Gene" Meadows, 64, of Raven, VA, died May 24, 2006 at his home following a sudden illness.

Born in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Wilburn Henley and Goldie Burns Meadows.

He was a lifelong resident of the area and delivered flowers for Richlands Florists for over 14 years. He was a member of the Calvary Temple Church in Richlands and was a member of the UMWA. He was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Perry Eugene Meadows and his first wife, Mildred Meadows.

Survivors: wife, Joyce Simmons Meadows; daughters, Becky Meadows, Melissa Wilson and husband, Greg, and Christine Meadows, all of Richlands, Tena Lambert and husband, Monte, of Pounding Mill, Cindy Hodge and husband, Jimmie, of Cookeville, TN; sisters, Lorraine Shelton and Pansy Standly, both of Doran, Lovelle Shelton of Richlands; step daughter, Tammy Moore of Raven; step sons, Ted Kennedy II and Rodney Kennedy of Richlands; eight grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted May 27 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Grady McGlothlin officiating.

Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
