JOHN HENRY MICHAEL

John Henry Michael, 68, of Levels, WV died Sunday, August 1, 2004 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD.

Born March 15, 1936 at Arthur, WV to the late Lyle and Ora G. (Cosner) Michael.

In addition to his parents a brother, Earl Michael, preceded him in death.

Mr. Michael was an orchard worker with Mount Levels Orchard. He was a member of the Levels Volunteer Fire Department, Tri-State Coon Hunters and the Johnstown Sportsman's Club, Johnstown, Ohio

He is survived by wife, Norma Jean (Kooken) Michael of Levels; one daughter, Rebecca Woodson of Levels; five brothers, Thomas Michael of Petersburg, WV, Glen Michael of Newark, Ohio, Ray Michael of Points, WV, Bob Michael of Romney, WV and Arlie Michael of Petersburg; three sisters, Catherine Bennett of Petersburg, Audrey Winters of Augusta, WV and Mary Poling of Slanesville, WV; three grandchildren Samantha, Donald and Micaela Woodson

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the discretion of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney, WV.

THELMA MARIE KESNER

Thelma Marie Kesner, 82, of Burlington, WV died August 24, 2004 at the home of her daughter, Debbie Inskeep in Maysville, WV.

Ms. Kesner was born December 10, 1921 in Gormania, West Virginia to the late Frank and Mattie ( Minnich) Lloyd.

She is preceded in death by one sister, Marge Evans, and one brother, Harry Lloyd.

Ms. Kesner was secretary at Walter Reed Hospital and a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Purgitsville, WV.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Lee Kesner, Burlington, WV; two sons Robert Lee Kesner, Jr., and wife Katie, Keyser, WV and Terry Lynn Kesner, and wife, Jeanetta, Burlington, WV; one daughter, Debby Inskeep, and husband, Carter, Maysville, WV; one brother, Glenn Lloyd, and wife, Delores, Bismark, WV; one sister, Claretta Ridder, and husband, Ray, Oakland, MD; two grandsons, Brent Kesner, Keyser, WV and Sheldon Dantzic, Fisher, WV; three granddaughters, Michelle Taylor, Fountain, WV, Bridget Kesner, Keyser, WV and Nicole Kesner, Romney, WV and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney, WV on Thursday, August 25, from 2-4 and 7-9.

The funeral service will be Friday, August 27, 2004 at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will be at Elijah High cemetery, Purgitsville, WV.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney, WV.

CARL WILLIAM FLANAGAN

Carl William Flanagan, 87, of Outlook Pointe Assisted Care Center, Martinsburg, WV formerly of Romney, died Saturday, August 28, 2004 at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Mr. Flanagan was born May 10, 1917 in Sunburst, North Carolina to the late Clifford P. Flanagan and Lossie (McClaine) Flanagan.

His wife, Senath (Vaughan) Flanagan preceded him in death.

Mr. Flanagan served as Physical Education Director for 35 years at the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Romney. He previously worked as a Park Ranger for the National Park Service at Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier National Park and Great Smokey Mountain National Park.

Prior to 1953 he served as athletic coach at Winfield High School in Putnam County, WV. In 1948 he coached the high school football team that today continues to hold the all time defensive record having allowed only 27 points in 10 games and went on to play for the state championship. He was a WWII Navy Veteran.

He was a graduate of West Virginia University in Morgantown with a master's degree in Physical Education. He lettered in baseball and basketball and was inducted into the WVU Physical Education Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Parsons High School State Championship Basketball Team in Parsons, WV.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Romney and a former member of the Romney Lions Club. Mr. Flanagan was a former member of the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple in Cumberland, MD and a 50-year 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Adams Stevens Chapter in Shepherdstown, WV

He is survived by on son, W. Dale Flanagan of Charles Town, WV; two brothers, Lajoie Flanagan of Cumberland, MD and Jimmie Flanagan of Cumberland, MD; one sister, Helen Fry of Knoxville, TN; and three grandsons.

A memorial service will be held for Mr. Flanagan on Saturday, September 4, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Romney with Dr. Roy D. Knight and Rev. Melissa Rudolph officiating. Friends will be received at the church at 10:00 a.m. - one hour prior to the service.

Internment will be at Indian Mound cemetery, Romney, WV.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Romney, WV. Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney, WV.

DELPHIA SUSAN HARTMAN

Delphia Susan Hartman, 90, of Springfield, WV died September 20, 2004 at the Hampshire Center, Romney, WV.

She was born on August 4, 1914 in Smokehole, West Virginia to the late Jasper Calvin and Pearlie Alice (Berg) Heavener.

She is preceded in death by her husband George Amos Hartman, June 2, 1951; one son Gary Amos Hartman; one brother William Heavener; and two sisters Jane Lofton and Lillian Mae Wagoner.

Mrs. Hartman retired from the Hampshire County Board of Education having served as custodian for the Springfield Grade School, Springfield, WV.

She was a member of the Springfield United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of the WSCS of the Springfield United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of the Springfield CEO's and formerly a member of The Cottage Singers.

She is survived by three sons Ray L. Hartman, and wife, Mallene, Montgomery, Alabama, Jimmie Joe Hartman, Springfield, WV, and Teddy W. Hartman, and wife, Betty, Maysville, WV; two daughters Hilda H. Ennis, Philadelphia, PA, and Linda S. Moore, and husband, Sid, Romney, WV; two brothers Richard Heavener, and wife, Kitty, Youngstown, Ohio, and Warren Heavener, Keyser, WV; three sisters Goldie Woerner, Fisher, WV, Evelyn Mercer, Youngstown, Ohio and Ruth Henry, and husband, Kenneth, Warren, Ohio; daughter-in-law Anita Hartman of Gerrards,WV; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and special friends Patricia Davis, Charlie, Beth, Abigail, and Emily Parsons.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home on Thursday, September 23 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

A funeral service will be at the Springfield United Methodist Church, Springfield, WV on Friday, September 24, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Deborah Shreve officiating.

Internment will be at the Springfield Hill cemetery, Springfield, WV.

Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney, WV.

TIA EDITH STICKLEY

Tia Edith Stickley, 38, of Junction, WV died Sunday, September 26, 2004 at Rio, WV as a result of an auto accident.

She was born July 12, 1966 in Winchester, VA to Roger Paul Stickley, Sr. of Junction, WV and her mother, Avery (Blackburn) Gravis who preceded her in death.

She was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Purgitsville, WV and recently was attending Romney Christian Church.

In addition to her father, she is survived by two brothers Mark A. Stickley of Augusta, WV and Roger P. Stickley, Jr. of Points, WV; one sister Tracy Viscount of Martinsburg, WV; nieces and nephews Zeb Stickley, Kara Stickley, Katrina Shoemaker and Taylor Viscount; two great nieces Hannah and Brooklyn Shoemaker.

Friends will be received at the Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home in Romney, WV on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 from 7– 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Purgitsville, WV with the Pastor R. Daniel Biser officiating.

Internment will be at Elijah High cemetery in Purgitsville, WV.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, c/o Emogene Stickley, Treasurer, HC 66, Box 11-B, Purgitsville, WV 26852.

Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney, WV.

JACK ALBERT HORTON

Jack Albert Horton, 72, of Romney, WV died Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at his residence.

He was born July 29, 1932 in Baltimore, MD to the late Ray F. and Geneva (Bartol) Horton.

Mr. Horton was a photographer and the Sports Editor for the Hampshire Review from 1993-1996. He served in the US Air Force.

He is survived by his former wife, Millicent Lowe Horton, Romney, WV, two sons Scott Allan Horton, Romney, WV and Ryan Horton, California; one daughter Vickie Lynn Horton Booth, Rockport, MA; one brother Guy "Sam" Horton, Florida; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home on Saturday, September 11, 2004 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. with the service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Richard Maslow will officiate.

Interment will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

SAUNDRA LONG RANNELLS

Saundra Long Rannells, 57, of Springfield, WV lost her courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, September 4, 2004 surrounded by her loved one's at the home of her aunt and uncle, Donna and Marvin Bohrer of Slanesville, WV.

She was born January 27, 1947 in Romney, WV to the late Ralph and Ruth Virginia (Sirk) Long.

She is preceeded in death by her first husband, Roger William Haines, her brother, Ralph Willard Long and her grandparents, Clarence and Wilda Sirk and Conrad and Mary Long, also preceded her in death.

She was a 1964 graduate of Romney High School and Scott's Beauty Academy in Cumberland, MD. She was formerly employed by the Kinney Shoe Corporation, Romney and owned a well-known ceramics business in Fort Ashby, WV. Mrs. Rannells attended the Springfield Presbyterian Church and the Fort Ashby United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the OES Romney Chapter #84, where she served three terms as Worthy Matron and was currently serving as treasurer and West Virginia Grand Chapter Representative to the State of Texas. She was also a member of the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple Daughters of the Nile, Cumberland and a former member of the Romney GFWC.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Douglas William Rannells, her beloved dog, Mickey, and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Trudy Seita and husband, Charles of Parkersburg, WV

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 5, 2004 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney where the OES Romney Chapter #84 will conduct a memorial service at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 6, 2004 10:00 a.m. at the Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney, WV with Rev. Wayne Stotler officiating.

Internment will be at Branch Mountain cemetery, Three Churches, WV.

Members of the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple Motor Corps will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney, WV.
