A. Ray Shingleton

A. Ray Shingleton, 94, of St. Marys, died Nov. 7, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Hospital of Parkersburg.

He was born March 24, 1907, in Calcutta, W.Va., son of the late George and Mary Fitzwater Shingleton and husband to the late Ina Davis Shingleton. He was a member of the Dewey Avenue Church of Christ.

He was the Pleasants County Road Supervisor for the former W.Va. State Road, now the W.Va. Department of Highways.

He was a farmer for many years and a five-time Strawberry King of West Virginia. He had won first place several times. He raised and sold Christmas trees and was Christmas tree champion in the Elkins Forest Festival.

He is survived by six children, Paul Shingleton and his wife, Betty and Mary Jean Shingleton all of St. Marys, Carroll Shingleton and his wife, Glenna of Lubeck, W.Va., Stanley Shingleton and his wife, Mary of Valley Mills, Larry Shingleton and his wife, Vonda and Shirley Poling and her husband, John all of St. Marys; eight grandchildren, Randy Shingleton, Tim Shingleton, Renee Simons, Scott Shingleton, Teresa Gann, Eric Shingleton, Leon Poling and Matt Poling; two foster grandchildren, Barbara Lankton and Brenda Persinger; 12 great-grandchildren; four foster great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one sister, Hattie Eddy; one brother, Gale Shingleton; and one foster son, Jim Persinger.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at the Ruttencutter-Ingram Funeral Home of St. Marys, with the Rev. Roy Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Shawnee Cemetery, Rt. 39, Pleasants County.

Delbert C. "Chiz" Shingleton
Delbert C. ‘Chiz’ Shingleton, 82, of St. Marys, Nine Mile Community, died July 6, 2001 at his residence.

He was born on July 30, 1918, at Nine Mile in Pleasants County. Mr. Shingleton was retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 35 years of service working from the St. Marys Post Office and early in his working career was the co-owner of the S. & S. Service Station in St. Marys. He was a graduate of St. Marys High School; was a veteran of World War II with service in the Pacific Theater; and was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars both of St. Marys.

Mr. Shingleton is survived by his wife of 32 years, Beulah A. Burnside Nicholson Shingleton; daughters, Pam Mcfarland and husband Jim of Belmont, and Penny S. Mahaney and her late husband Clifford, of Ellenboro; stepdaughters, Carolyn Moellendick and husband Randy of Belpre, and Sandy Fleming and husband Rick of Parkersburg; grandchildren, Holly Smith of Columbus, Alicia Folger of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Matthew Wolfe of St. Marys, and Jessica Woodby of Ellenboro; great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Folger of Zanesville; stepgrandchildren, Tim Duty of Parkersburg and Shawna Winans and Tricia Sanders, both of Washington ; stepgreat- grandchildren, Torie and Nicholas Sanders and Mason Winans, all of Washington .

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lillie Mercer Shingleton; brother, Harry Shingleton; stepson, Darwin Nicholson; and his beloved pet dog, Missy.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro. Burial will follow in the Pleasants Memorial Estates at Eureka in Pleasants County. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Madeline V. Shultz
Madeline V. Shultz, 84, of St. Marys died May 7, 2001, at Carehaven of Pleasants, Belmont, W.Va.

Survivors include a few cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Alva Shultz; two brothers, Blaine Edward Meanor and George Franklin “Red” Meanor; and one sister, Mildred Margaret Meanor.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ruttencutter-Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys. Burial in Willow Island Cemetery. Visitation from 6-9 p.m. today.

Ella Marie Triplett Shutts
Ella Marie Triplett Shutts, 91, of Marietta died April 6, 2002, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 30, 1910, in Washington County, OH, a daughter of the late James and Martha Ellen Goodwin Roberts. She was a member of the Gilman United Methodist Church, Marietta and the Esther Circle of the church. She attended St. Marys High School, had worked at Ames (Shovel Plant) during World War II, had been a glass inspector for the former Paramount Glass Company and had worked at Kroger and the St. Marys Food Giant. Marie had many and varied interests. She was an avid reader, especially mysteries, and she liked the challenge of crossword puzzles. She was really at home in her flower garden, where she experienced God's beauty and love. She also liked to sew, crochet and quilt. Her great love was her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren. They felt she baked the World's greatest pumpkin pies.

She is survived by one son, John E. Triplett Sr. and his wife Rhoda of Marietta; two daughters, Martha Lou Kelley of Rayland, Ohio, and Sara Jane Pashia and her husband James of Collinsville, IL.; one stepdaughter, Rosemary Page Tudor of Dayton, Ohio; one sister, Ruth Polston of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peyton Earl Triplett; four sisters, Gertrude Cumblidge, Glenna Allen, Bertha Grimm and Virginia Simms; and three brother, John "Bus" Roberts, Robert "Bob" Roberts and Harold Roberts.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ruttencutter-Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, the Rev. Gene Adkins officiating. Burial in St. Marys IOOF Cemetery. Visitation is from 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Joan Slaymaker

Carley Joan Ingraham Weikle Slaymaker, 67, passed away Aug. 19, 2002, after a battle with cancer. She was born in St. Marys in 1935, and moved to Sarasota, FL., in 1993, after a career as a public school teacher and elementary principal in Ohio, including Wellington, Mansfield, Coshocton, Milan, Sandusky, Lorain, and at MacArthur School in Alexandria, VA.

Joan was owner, with her husband, of Longboat Framing Gallery from 1995 to 2001. She served the Longboat Chamber of Commerce as a Goodwill Ambassador, was a board member of the Sarasota Make a Wish Foundation, Sarasota Rotary International, and Pet Therapy. She was a Christian. She was a graduate of Williamstown High School in Williamstown, W.VA., Marshall University, and Akron University.

Memorial services will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 5900 Lockwood Ridge, Sarasota, 7 p.m. Saturday. Cremation will have preceded the memorial service.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of Florida in her name, at Hospice of SW Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238.

Surviving are her husband, Phillip Slaymaker, retired Ohio School administrator; brother, Paul Ingram of Scottsdale, AZ.; daughter, Wendy Murphy of Alexandria, VA.; son, Mark Weikle of St. Louis, MO.; daughter, Amy Hinson of Nantucket, MA.; stepdaughter, Stephanie Slaymaker Baghdadi of Tampa, FL.; stepson, Chip Slaymaker of Columbus, OH; and nine grandchildren, who will miss her very much, as will her many friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee and Bernice Ingram; and brothers, Fredrick and Denny.

Barbara H. Smith
Barbara H. Smith, 86, of Route 2, St. Marys, died Feb. 20, 2002, at the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital of Parkersburg.

She was born June 30, 1915, in Muncie, IN, a daughter of the late Cleveland and Ada Barkwill Hayes. She was a member of the Bens Run Church of Christ.

She is survived by one daughter, Lucy Templeton of St. Marys; two sons, John Roy Smith of Hebron, WV and Oliver K. Smith of St. Marys; 14 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Hayes of Meadville, Tyler County, one sister, Kathleen Fetty of St. Marys; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy A. Smith; one daughter, Margaret Stewart; one son, Valley Joe Smith; one daughter-in-law, Jeanette Smith; and one son-in-law, Roger Templeton.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Ruttencutter-Ingram Funeral Home of St. Marys. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery of Mt. Carmel Ridge, Pleasants County. Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Jeanette Paynter Smith
Jeanette Paynter Smith, 57, of Route 2, St. Marys, died Jan. 18, 2001, at the Marietta Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 24, 1943, in St. Marys, a daughter of Katherine Oldfield Paynter of St. Marys and the late George Richard Paynter. She was a member of the Bens Run Church and a 1961 graduate of St. Marys High School.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 36 years, Oliver ‘‘Butch’’ Smith; three daughters, Kelly Barnhart and her husband, Brian of Marietta, Stacy Stout and her husband, Kevin and Barbara Snively and her husband, Jeff, all of St. Marys; one son, Oliver Keith Smith and his wife, Nettie of St. Marys; six sisters, Betty Pryor, Sandra Miller, Connie Fetty and Dianne Bayless, all of St. Marys, Barbara Sayger of Vienna, and Mary Ann Wolfe of Newport; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Dearth.

Services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at the George Street Church of Christ, St. Marys, Evangelist David Heater officiating. Burial in the Bethel Cemetery, Mount Carmel Ridge, Pleasants County. Calling hours from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Ruttencutter-Ingram Funeral Home of St. Marys and from 2-3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Lula C. Smith
Lula C. Smith, 82, of Woodsfield, OH, and formerly of New Matamoras, died July 11, 2001, in Cleveland Clinic.

She was born July 5, 1919, in Brownsville, OH, to the late James and Martha Dye Stacey. She attended the Nazarene Church.

She is survived by three sons, Russell Smith and his wife, Linda, of New Matamoras, William D. Smith of Marietta and Stephen Smith and his wife, Jill, of New Matamoras; one daughter, Cherly Smith of Paden City; one sister, Dorothy French of Las Vegas, NV; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Smith; one daughter, Marilyn Sue Smith; seven sisters; and two brothers.

Services were Friday at Rush-Grisell Funeral Home in Sardis, OH, with the Rev. Jerry Boron officiating. Burial was in New Matamoras Cemetery.

Valley Joe Smith
Valley Joe Smith, 61, of Rt. 2, St. Marys, WV, died, January 2, 2002, at his residence. He was born, April 28, 1940, in Pleasants County, WV, a son of Barbara Hayes Smith of St. Marys, WV and the late Roy A. Smith. He was a painter and played the guitar. He was a 1957 graduate of St. Marys High School.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Cyndy Luther and Teresa Peralez both of Arlington, TX, one son, John Smith of Alvarado, TX, four grandchildren, Kristopher Luther and Ryan Luther both of Arlington, TX, and Audrey Smith and Ashley Smith both of Alvarado, TX, one sister, Lucy Templeton of St. Marys, WV, two brothers, John Smith of Hebron, WV, and Oliver K. Smith of St. Marys, WV, a close friend, Ray Ammons of St. Marys, WV, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, his wife, Jeanette Bemont Smith, one sister, Margaret Stewart, sister-in-law, Jeanette Paynter Smith, and brother-in-law, Roger Templeton.

Services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2002, at 11 A. M. at the Ruttencutter-Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, WV. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery, Mt. Carmel Ridge, Pleasants County, WV. Calling hours from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P. M. Friday, and from 9 to 11 A. M. Saturday at the funeral home.

William F. "Bill" Smith
William F. "Bill" Smith, 91, of St. Marys, died August 5, 2001, at Wetzel County Hospital in New Martinsville.

He was born August 6, 1909, in Washington County, OH, to the late Barney D. and Ida M. Burgy Smith. He was a carpenter and a member of Carpenters Union Local 899. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion Post 79 and a life member of the Elks where he had held various offices.

He is survived by his wife, Doran M. Nichols Smith; two step-sons, John Nichols of Middlebourne and Gary Nichols of Alma; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary McSweeney Smith; four sisters; and five brothers.

Services were Wednesday, August 8, at 2:30 p.m. at Ruttencutter-Ingram Funeral Home in St. Marys with pastor Chuck Rogers officiating. Burial was in St. Marys IOOF Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by American Legion Post 79, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 222 and AmVets Post 40.
