Maurice E. Simmons

Maurice E. Simmons, age 88, of Bartow, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at White Sulphur Springs Family Care Center.

A lifelong resident of Pocahontas County, he was retired from Howes Leather Company.

Mr. Simmons was born July 1, 1912, at Cherry Grove, the son of the late William and Mary Etta Simmons.

His wife of 63 years, Gladys V. Simmons, died September 13, 2000. Also preceding him in death were a granddaughter, a brother, and three sisters.

Surviving him are two daughters, Mary Jane Galford, of Marlinton, and Norma L. Brockway, of White Sulphur Springs two sons, James E. Simmons, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and William H. Simmons, of Cross Lanes; a brother, Berlin M. Simmons, of Palmyra, Pennsylania; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale by the Rev. David Rittenhouse. Burial was in the Arbovale Cemetery.

Curtis Y. Moore

Curtis Y. Moore, age 86, of Durbin, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown after a short illness.

Mr. Moore, a lifelong resident of Pocahontas County, was born August 21, 1914, at Marlinton, the son of the late Theodore and Edith Gum Moore.

He worked for the United States Government for 39 years, as a forester, mainly out of the Bartow office. He retired in 1972 to read, garden, and travel. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Marlinton for over fifty years and was a member of the Durbin United Methodist Church.

A sister, Louise M. Burns, and a brother, Ted Moore, preceded him in death.

Surviving him are his wife of 60 years, Lucille Pyles Moore; a son, Robert Moore, of Panama City, Florida; a daughter, Sara Raines, of Herndon, Virginia; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Leone Pifer, of Marlinton, and Peggy Dorsey, of Greenville, South Carolina.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale by the Rev. Gary Gordon. Burial with Masonic rites followed at Mountain View Cemetery, Marlinton.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Durbin United Methodist Church.

Joseph Tawney

Joseph W. Tawney, age 79, of Buckeye, died Thursday, January 25, 2001, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Tawney was a heavy equipment operator, and served in the Army in World War II. He was a Christian.

Born June 24, 1921, at O’Brian Creek, Clay County, he was the son of the late Freddie Dye and Mary Green Tawney.

Survivors include his wife, Lena King Tawney; three daughters, Phyllis A. Waugh, of Buckeye, Dianna L. Ray, of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Brenda S. Robinson, of Marlinton; five sons, David L. Slawter, of Monterville, Richard D. King, of Akron, Ohio, Joseph A. (Bunker) Tawney, Freddie L. (Pete) Tawney, both of Buckeye, and James F. (Frankie) Tawney, of Mill Point; four sisters, Geneva Murphy, of Port Hope, Michigan, Dorrie Morris, and Sarah Keffer, both of Clay, and Leona Crawford, of Newton; two brothers, Dick Starcher, of Akron, Ohio, and Doyle Tawney, of Newton, 26 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, Harlan Tawney, James Tawney, and Abbey Starcher, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon by Pastor Jerry Moore, with burial in Sharp Cemetery on Stamping Creek.

Memorial gifts may be made to Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.

Eleanor Stewart

Eleanor Stewart, of Marlinton and East Elmhurst, New York, died in Inglewood, California Friday, January 26, 2001, after a year’s illness with cancer.

She grew up in Marlinton, the daughter of the late George and Bessie Stewart.

Wanda G. Kelley

Wanda Gibson Kelley, wife of Kenneth Kelley, died early Wednesday at her home on Knapps Creek. Arrangements are incomplete at press time. VanReenen Funeral home is in charge.

Inez M. Horner

Inez M. Horner, of Dunmore, age 103, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Pocahontas Center in Marlinton after an extended illness.

Mrs. Horner was Pocahontas County’s oldest citizen and a lifelong resident of Dunmore.

She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, member of United Methodist Women for over 50 years, and member of Extension Homemakers and Home Demonstration Clubs.

The daughter of the late Peter P. and Lillie Jane Nottingham Oliver, she was born at Dunmore on February 7, 1898.

Preceding her in death were her husband, James Ray Horner, on December 24, 1976; a sister, Oneida Collins; and a brother, Percy Oliver.

Survivors include two daughters, Gertrude Taylor and Naomi McQuain, both of Dunmore; two sons, Harry Byrle Horner, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Neil Horner, of Dunmore; fourteen grandchildren, thirty-eight great-grandchildren, and forty-seven great-great-grand-children.

Services were held Tuesday afternoon at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church at Dunmore by the Rev. Scott Ingleton. Burial was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Wesley Chapel Cemetery Fund in care of Ben Galford.

James A. Jones

James A. Jones, age 69, of Hot Springs, Virginia, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Bath County Community Hospital in Hot Springs.

He worked for The Homestead Hotel Laundry Service in Hot Springs and attended Eden United Methodist Church in Hot Springs.

A native of Bath County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Andrew Harrison and Ettie Pearl Sevy Jones.

His wife, Willie Lee Black Jones, died in 1965. Also deceased are a son, James Filmore Jones, a sister, brother, and step-brother.

Surviving him are two daughters, Rosa Lee Jones Fisher, of Huntersville, and Joyce Louise Jones, of Hot Springs; two sisters, Ettie Mildred Jones, of Hot Springs, and Alpha Jones Wilson, of Hightop; two brothers, Jack Jones and Leroy Jones, both of Hot Springs; two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at McLaughlin Funeral Home at Hot Springs by the Rev. Steve Shaver, with burial in Warm Springs Cemetery, Warm Springs, Virginia.

Memorial donations may be made to Jones’ family, c/o McLaughlin Funeral Home, P. O. Box 1112, Hot Springs, VA 24445.

William Neal Houdyschell

Infant William Neal Houdy-schell, son of Tim and Lisa Pyles Houdyschell, of Kenova, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Additional survivors include two brothers, Jacob and Caleb Houdyschell; his paternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Houdyschell, of Huntington; and his maternal grandparents, John and Delores Hill, of Hillsboro.

Graveside services were held Wednesday at Bruffeys Creek Cemetery near Hillsboro.

Benjamin A. Rose

Benjamin A. Rose, 64, of Arlington, Virginia, formerly of Durbin, died May 28, 2001, at his home.

He as born on April 17, 1937, in Durbin, the son of Ina A. Shelkey and the late Warden Rose.

Mr. Rose was a retired senior mortgage loan officer and a member of the Faith Lutheran Church and the Arlington Optimist Club.

Besides his mother, survivors include his wife, Carol June Rose; two daughters, Linda Dimurd, of Satellite Beach, Florida, and Deborah Haskins, of Fairfax, Virginia; two sisters, Joanne Nicely, of Alexandra, Virginia, and Jane Groat, of Bryans Road, Maryland.

Preceding him in death were his father; two brothers, William L. Rose and Robert O. Rose.

Funeral service was held on June 1 at the Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. Neal A. Davidson officiating. Burial was in Columbia Gardens in Arlington.

Josephine Sharp

Josephine “Jo” Sharp, 72, of Mingo, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at her home. She had been in failing health for the past five years.

She was born on January 8, 1929, the daughter of William Ambrose Sage and Edna Hartley Sage.

On December 29, 1950, she was united in marriage to Andy Sharp, who survives. Other survivors are one son, Rick A. Sharp, of Mingo; a foster son, Virgil Moore, of Mingo; two sisters, Madaline Honeycutt, of Landover Hills, Maryland, and Shirley Daft, of Valley Head; two grandchildren; one step granddaughter; and two foster granddaughters.

Preceding her in death were her parents; four sisters, Maggie Hannah, Martha Tumblin, Mary Phillips, and Denna Foreback; and four brothers, Russell, Cecil, Ray, and Glen Sage.

Mrs. Sharp was a graduate of Marlinton High School and an employee of the Randolph County Schools as secretary at the Valley Head School until retiring in 1995. She was a member of the Cass Chapter No. 124 OES, Osisi Shriner Temple of Wheeling, Tygarts Valley Ladies Shrine Club, Upper Valley Ruritan Club, Upper Valley Recreational Authority. She attended the Point Mountain Church and played the guitar sang with her husband in churches in Randolph and other counties.

Friends will be received at the Mingo Presbyterian Church on Thursday after 6 p.m.

The funeral will be on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Mingo Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Marshall Williams, David Slawter, David Rice, and Ralph Summerfield officiating. Interment will follow in the Mingo Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either the Upper Valley Recreational Authority, P. O. Box 242, Valley Head, WV 26294 or Mountain Hospice, 1410 Crimm Avenue, Belington, WV 26250.

Trenton W. Brewer

Trenton Wayne Brewer, age 2, of Green Bank, died Thursday, June 7, 2001.

He was born January 4, 1999, at Lewisburg, to Wayne Anthony and Jamie Lei Kerr Brewer.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Brewer.

He is survived along with his parents by maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Kerr, of Green Bank; maternal great-grandparents, Josie Valencia, of Green Bank, and Geronimo Valencia, of Arizona; paternal grandmother, Barbara Brewer, of Boyer.

Services were held at Arbovale Cemetery by the Rev. Julian Rittenhouse with burial in Arbovale Cemetery.
