Nola Jones Rose

Nola Virginia Jones Rose, age 85, of Marlinton, died Saturday, November 29, 2003, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Born October 6, 1918, at Seebert, she was the daughter of the late Macon Burton Jones and Sallie Hultz Jones.

She was a member of the Marlinton United Methodist Church, and had worked as a clerk at Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, FasChek and Pocahontas Foodland.

Her husband, Robert McNeil Rose, preceded her in death. Others deceased are a sister, Mildred F. Jones Slavin, and three brothers, Floyd T. Jones, Edward B. Jones, and James Wyatt Jones.

She is survived by a daughter, Sally Rose Ribeiro, of Richmond, Virginia; two sons, Robert Burton Rose, of Salem, Virginia, and Thomas McNeil Rose, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Marlinton United Methodist Church Wednesday morning by the Rev. Betty Shields, assisted by the Rev. Harold T. Elmore. with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to Marlinton United Methodist Women or the Marlinton United Methodist Church.

Marvin Franklin Doss

Marvin Franklin Doss, age 63, of Rt. 1, Marlinton, died Saturday, November 29, 2003, at Pocahontas Memorial Hos-pital, after suffering a heart attack.

He was a contractor, owner/ operator of M.F. Doss Construction. He was a member of National Rifle Association, Dairy Queen Breakfast Club, Farm Bureau, and supporter of Youth Sports.

The son of the late John F. and Veda R. Rose Doss Adkinson, he was born at Zenith February 11, 1940.

Surviving him are his wife, Brenda Carol Sharp Doss; a daughter, Marvina Carol Irvine, of Marlinton; two sons, Maxwell Craig Doss and Michael Clayton Doss, both of Marlinton; two sisters, Carol Rudd, of Campbelltown, and Shirley Armstrong, of Buckeye; two brothers, Danny Doss, of Marlinton, and Gary Doss, of Homerville, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

His parents, a brother, Robert Doss, and a sister, Lindia Doss, are deceased.

Services were held Tuesday afternoon at VanReenen Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Mann, with burial in the Sharp Cemetery on Jericho Road.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Ora T. Sharp Scholarship Fund at the Pendleton County Bank, Marlinton.

Scott E. Lovelace, Jr.

Scott ( White y) E. Lovelace, Jr., of Bluefield, formerly of Huntersville, died Monday, November 24, 2003, at Tazewell Community Hospital, Tazewell, Virginia.

The son of the late Scott Lovelace, Sr., and Lillian Clark Lovelace, he was born at Marlinton September 9, 1935.

Mr. Lovelace was a retired school bus driver.

He is survived by his wife, Berta L. Kellison Lovelace; three sisters, Barbara Kosloski, of Mt. Jackson, Virginia, Betty Loyd, of Newport, North Carolina, and Gloria Willowby, of Georgia; four brothers, David Lovelace, Don Lovelace, and Kenneth Lovelace, all of Marlinton, and Joe Lovelace, of Washington , D.C.; and two grandchildlren.

Preceding him in death were a daughter, Angela Dawn Lovelace Hughes; two sisters, Mary Catherine Workman and Retha Jane Lovelace; and a brother, Thomas Lovelace.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon by the Rev. Robert Mann, with burial in the Kee Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be given to Pocahontas Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Lena Tawney

Lena Tawney, age 76, of Buckeye, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.

Born January 7, 1927, at Clendenen, she was the daughter of Francis Marion King and Minnie Myrtle Copen King.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Tawney; her parents; a daughter, Donna June Tawney; three sisters, Mable Wilfong, Mamie Cobb, and Masciel Cobb; and three brothers, Lewis Cobb, Johnnny Cobb, and Robert King.

Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Waugh, of Buckeye, Dianna Ray, of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Brenda Robinson, of Marlinton; five sons, David Slawter, of Huttonsville, Richard King, of Akron, Ohio, Joseph "Bunker" Tawney, and James "Frankie" Tawney, both of Marlinton, and Freddie "Pete" Tawney, of Buckeye; a sister, Anna Mae Pritt, of Buckeye; twenty-six grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at VanReenen Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Gerald Hamrick. Burial was in the Sharp Cemetery.

Ethel Pearl Sipe

Ethel Pearl Underwood Sipe, age 78, of Junction City, Oregon, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2003, at home.

Born August 4, 1925, in Renick, she was the daughter of the late Delmer Guy and Mary Emily North Underwood.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Richard Sipe.

Survivors include her husband, Dewey Richard Sipe; daughter, Lisa Lynn Moreland, of Junction City; four grandchildren; sisters, Lula Starrett, of Orange, California, Eula Sharp, of Marlinton, Mildred Sharp, of Berkeley Springs, Bernice Johnston, of Frankford, Norma Burke, of Farmerville, Louisiana; and brother, Charles Underwood, of Staunton, Virginia. She was a niece of Edith Coleman, of Frankford.

The services were held at the Musgrove Family Mortuary in Junction City, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon, December 4.

James T. Martin, Sr.

James T. Martin, Sr., age 87, of Marlinton, died early Tuesday, December 2, 2003, in Charleston Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are incomplete at press time. The body is at VanReenan Funeral Home.

Ronald B. Weimer

Following a six-year battle with prostate cancer, Ronald B. Weimer died November 20, 2003, at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas .

Mr. Weimer was born December 3, 1936, the son of Vance and Irene Weimer.. He married Barbara Jean Heasley June 8, 1957 in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania .

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons Ronald, Jr., of Green Bank and Greg, of Bluefield; daughter Malissa, of Knoxville, Tennessee; brother James, of Waynesburg; and three grandsons.

Mr. Weimer was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Leoda Stuart.

In 1958, Ron graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical engineering. For the next nine years, Ron worked as an electronic engineer for the Army Signal Corps in Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey.

In July 1967, Ron began a long, dedicated and productive career at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. From 1967 to 1989 he was the principal digital engineer for the 140-foot, the 300-foot and the interferometer radio telescopes in Green Bank. In 1989 Ron, Barbara and Malissa moved to Magdalena, New Mexico, and Ron worked for NRAO in Socorro. There he was principal digital engineer for the Very Large Array and Very Long Baseline Array radio telescopes until he retired in 1999. At NRAO he was legendary for his unique ability to reverse engineer analog and digital devices that had little or no documentation. Ron was a very generous person, frequently repairing things electronic, electrical and mechanical for friends and neighbors, and helping in many other ways.

The funeral was held November 25 at the Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania , with burial in Waynesburg. Ron's family requests that donations in the name of Ronald B. Weimer be sent to the Dept. of Genitourinary Medical Oncology, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcomb Blvd., Box 13, Houston, TX 77030-4009.

Madge Brock

Madge Brock, of Hillsboro, died December 1, 2003, at Greenbrier Valley Hospital in Fairlea. She was 64.

Mrs. Brock was born November 11, 1939, in Hillsboro, the daughter of the late William Alva and Mable May Hinkle Seabolt. She was a member of the West View Baptist Chapel and retired from Denmar State Hospital as a certified cook. She was active with 4-H.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnson Seabolt and Roy Seabolt.

Mrs. Brock is survived by her husband, Marvin, of Hillsboro; daughters, Kathy Armstrong, of Caldwell, and Kimberly Thompson, of Hillsboro; son, Allen Brock, of Charleston; sister, Mary Cassell, of Cass; brother, Abe Seabolt, of Cass; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation is Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at VanReenen Funeral home. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home by the Rev. Steve Holland. She will be buried in Emmanuel Cemetery.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to West View Baptist Chapel, Caesar Mountain.

Howard Alvin Melton

Howard Alvin Melton, 69, of Marlinton, died December 1, 2003, at Salem Veterans Area Medical Center.

Mr. Melton was born October 23, 1934, in Belle, the son of the late Stanley and Mary Casto Melton. He was retired from the U. S. Air Force, having served in both Korea and Vietnam, and was a member of the Cummings Creek Victory Chapel.

He was also preceded in death by his son, Rick, sister, Margaret Noffsinger, and brother Carroll Melton.

Mr. Melton is survived by his wife, Dianna M. Parsons Melton, of Marlinton; son, Gary Wayne Melton, of Milbourne, Florida; step-son, Adrian Rawle, of Morgantown; sister, Phyllis Taylor, of North East Palm Bay, Florida; brother, Franklin W. Melton, of Charleston; and four grandchildren..

Visitation will be Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at VanReenen Funeral Home. Rev. Norman Lee Alderman will conduct funeral services at Cummings Creek Victory Chapel Friday at 1 p.m.

Beverley C. Kenney

Beverley C. Kenney, age 81, of Marlinton, died Friday, February 6, 2004, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Kenney is survived by his wife, Leona M. Kenney; a daughter, Carmella K. Combs; a son, John W. Kenney; two grandchildren, Dana Combs and Heather Luessenhop, and a great-grandchild, Grace Autumn Luessenhop.

Frances Marie Bowling

Frances Marie Bowling, age 71, of MacArthur, formerly of Marlinton, died Friday, February 6, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.

She was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital, a member of Beckley Moose Lodge #1606, and a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Marlinton.

Born at Sprague, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Frances Piotrowski Gravely.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Muarry Bowling, a son, Jim Bowling, and a sister, Joan Peck.

Mrs. Bowling is survived by a daugher, Debra Jackson, of Franklin; two brothers, Frank Gravely and Freddy Gravely, both of Marlinton; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and a special nephew, Bobby Peck.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mountain View Cemetery by Father Thatson.

Memorial gifts may be made to Franklin Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 966, Franklin, or St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Marlinton.
