Ray Harper Corbett

Ray Harper Corbett, age 68, of Arbovale and formerly of Highland County, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

He was born April 8, 1936, at Washington , D.C., a son of the late Charles Harper and Elsie McCealen Pritt Corbett.

He was a member of the Hamilton Chapel Advent Christian Church, and was a retired construction worker.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jimmy Corbett, Gerald Corbett, and Hugh A. Corbett.

Surviving are four sisters, Shirley C. Verges, of Monterey, Virginia, Patsy C. Herold, of Rockville, Maryland, Malen C. Eakin, of New Castle, Pennsylvania , and Diana C. Smick, of Richmond, Virginia; two brothers, Douglas A. Corbett, of Monterey, and Martin L. Corbett, Sr., of Mustoe, Virginia.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell by the Rev. Donald E. Rose.

Margie Elizabeth Simmons

Margie Elizabeth Simmons, age 98, of Painesville, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the Alter Care Nursing Home in Mentor, Ohio.

Mrs. Simmons was born April 13, 1906, at Bartow, the daughter of the late Samuel and Maude Barkley Spencer.

She was a member of the Painesville Church of the Nazarene, one of the first members, and a former member of the Frank Nazarene Church. She was employed by the Painesville Township Board of Education.

Her husband, Clyde R. Simmons, preceded her in death in 2001, and also a son, Donald Neil Simmons, is deceased.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris E. Gillispie, of Temple Hills, Maryland; a son, Zane Stanley Simmons, of Cornville, Arizona; two sisters, Marie Wooddell, of Sun City, Arizona, and Nellie Malcomb, of Lakeland, Florida; twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Monday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home at Arbovale by the Rev. Gary Reynolds, with burial in the Arbovale Cemetery.

Audrey Katherine Greathouse "Katie" Shiley

Audrey Katherine Greathouse "Katie" Shiley, age 91, of Natural Bridge, Virginia, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, in The Roanoke United Methodist Home, where she had been a resident for the last six years.

Mrs. Shiley was born December 4, 1913, in Durbin, and was a daughter of the late William Greathouse and Maggie Hevener Greathouse.

She and her husband, the late Rev. Hugh L. Shiley, served many churches over a span of 40 years in the West Virginia and Virginia Methodist Conferences, which included Mt. Zion, Elliotts Hill, and Wesley Chapel United Methodist Churches of the Rockbridge Charge. She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities including the Methodist Women. She founded the Maury River Garden Club in 1962 when the Katherine Shiley Award was named in her honor. She was a past volunteer at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. In 1987, she received a Blue ribbon "Best in Show" for her appliqued quilt at the Rockbridge Regional Fair.

Mrs. Shiley is survived by two sons, John W. Shiley, of Kerens, and Daniel L. Shiley, of Natural Bridge, Virginia; one granddaughter, one grandson and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charles Carroll and the Rev. Dr. William K. Thomas officiating.

Burial was in the Arbovale Cemetery on Tuesday with the Rev. David Rittenhouse officiating.

Monica Long Ghent

Monica Long Ghent, age 84, of Charleston, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at her home.

Born in Boomer, a daughter of the late James Edward and Violet Long, she was a long-time resident of Charleston.

She was a former employee of Bluebaugh Bakery and the Pauley Paving Company. She was the treasurer of the Warren Place Homeowners Association, Charleston, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Charleston.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Ella Oliver and Betty Grow.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bob Ghent; a daughter, Jane Harris; three sons, Jim Burks, of Hillsboro, Bobby Burks, and Jack Burks, M.D.; two sisters, Bernice Ellis and Louise Davis; two brothers, John Long and Joe Long; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She has gifted her body to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University Medical School.

Memorial services were held Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, Charleston, with the Rev. Dick Neeley officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar, WV 25064.

Dexter "Tab" Yocum, Jr.

Dexter "Tab" Yocum, Jr., age 80, of Scott Depot, died March 1, 2005, at his home.

Born February 22, 1925, in Kayford, he was the son of the late Dexter, Sr., and Eunice Yocum.

His parents and his wife, Florence Sevy Yocum, preceded him in death.

He was a retired operator from Bethlehem Steel and was a member of both St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot, and Alexander Memorial Presbyterian Church, Stony Bottom. He was a 50-year member of Boone Masonic Lodge 162, White sville, Scottish Rite Bodies, Charleston, and VFW Post 4595. He served with the United States Army during World War II, serving in five countries and earning five battle stars. He also participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He and his wife spent seven to eight months a year at their camp in Stony Bottom.

Service was held March 5 at St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot, with Dr. Martin H. Hallett officiating. Burial with military honors and Masonic service was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 4013 Teays Valley Road, Scott Depot, WV 25560, or to Alexander Memorial Presbyterian Church, Stony Bottom-Cass, WV 24927.

D. P. "Sheriff" Given

D. P. "Sheriff" Given, age 87, of Webster Springs, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at his Webster Springs residence following an extended illness.

He was born at Upper Glade May 6, 1917, son of the late H. F. and Susan Paugh Given.

He was a life-long resident of Webster County, a retired contractor and political figure; he served in the Army Air Corps 554th Bomber Squadron during World War II. He was a 1937 graduate of Cowen High School, a graduate of Glenville State College, and also studied at Oxford University in England.

Given was a former Webster County Commissioner and served 10 years in the West Virginia House of Delegates. As a delegate he was affectionately known as the "Father of food stamps," and was instrumental in passage of legislation allowing the purchase of vehicle licenses at county seats, also helped bring the first scenic railroad excursion to Webster Springs in 1970 and was an avid supporter of reviving the CCC Camps.

He was a member of VFW Post 3738, and the American Legion, Roscoe Miller Post 62 of Cowen. He was a former member of the Moose Club, Webster Springs Lions Club & Ruritan Club and The Elks Club of Buckhannon.

A partner in Given Construction Company, he was credited with helping build additions to Webster Memorial Hospital and Franklin High School, did major construction for the Cass Scenic Railroad, built Dodd & Reed Funeral Home and the Mouth of Seneca Elementary School. In later years he hosted the TV programs, "Away We Go" and "Back Stage 69."

Surviving him are his wife, Cassandra Mitchell Given; two daughters, Donna J. Clutter Kafer, of Weston, and Jenny L. Given, of Webster Springs; adopted daughter, Michelle Wilson, of Ocean Isle, North Carolina; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and eleven brothers and sisters.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, with Rev. Cofer Cochran and Rev. Ken Stockwell officiating. Burial will be in the Miller Cemetery, Webster Springs, with military rites by VFW Post 3738.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Webster County Senior Citizens, VFW Post 3738, or the First United Methodist Church Youth Group.

Josephine B. Boggs

Josephine B. Boggs, age 90, of Marlinton, died at the Heartland Nursing Home in Martinsburg, on October 3, 2005.

Born March 7, 1915, she was the daughter of the late William Madison Boggs, Sr. and Mabel C. Wheeler Boggs. She was a member of the Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church in Brownsburg and most recently a member of Charity Baptist Church in Brownsburg.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Glenna Jefferson, Orabelle Eaton, Rosie Williams, Ethel Stewart and four brothers, Ralph Boggs, Rev. Sanford Boggs, William M. Boggs, Jr., and Rev. Carl E. Boggs. She is survived by two sisters, Clara Wilson and Mary Evans, both of Dowagiac, Michigan, and a host of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is being planned to be held in Marlinton, with interment at the Brownsburg Cemetery. The date has not been confirmed.

Memorial services for Josephine Boggs will be held Saturday, October 22, at 12 noon at VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton.

Barbara K. Brewer

Barbara K. Brewer, age 64, of Durbin, died Friday, October 7, 2005, at the home of her daughter at Churchville, Virginia.

Mrs. Brewer was born July 1, 1941, at Mill Creek, to the late Paul and Ruby Hamonds Hannah.

She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal faith.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John D. Brewer, Sr., in 1984; one sister, Louvan Moore; two grandchildren; one stepdaughter, Shelia Wright, and one step-son, Lewis James Brewer.

Surviving her are four daughters, Patricia Gum, of Churchville, Virginia, Sandra J. Mowers, of Bluegrass, Virginia, Carol Greenlee, of Point Pleasant, and Wanda Losh, of Mt. Solon, Virginia; five sons, John D. Brewer, Jr., of Durbin, Paul A. Brewer, of Pennsylvania , Duncan D. Brewer, of Denver, Colorado, Tommy Brewer, of Hillsboro, and Wayne Brewer, of Bartow; two sisters, Vonda McCuley, of Farmdale, New Jersey, and Betty Raines, of Mill Creek; two step-daughters, Connie Walker, of Coal Creek, Colorado, and Evelyn Johnson, of Phinox City, Alabama; three step-sons, Eugene Brewer, Larry Brewer, and Don Brewer, all of Mill Creek; 38 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Monday, October 10, at the Arbovale Cemetery by Pastor Shirley Sheets. Burial was in the Arbovale Cemetery.

Robert P. Lipscomb

Robert P. Lipscomb, age 86, of Durbin, died Thursday, October 6, 2005, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Born October 10, 1918, at Henry, he was the son of the late George and Elva Schrock Lipscomb.

He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Elkins.

He retired in 1987 from the Parks and Recreation Service for State Parks and he was a World War II Army Veteran.

Lipscomb was preceded in death by two sons, Eyria Lipscomb and William Ray Lipscomb, one sister and seven brothers.

Surviving him are his wife of 44 years, Elsie Murphy Lipscomb; two sons, Robert Lipscomb, of Durbin, and George Daniel Lipscomb, of Keyser; two step-sons, Larry G. Pennington, of Hendricks, and Charles J. Pennington, of Pomeroy, Ohio; a step-daughter, Louise Staats, of Middleport, Ohio; two sisters, Betty Rydzewski, of Rowlesburg, and Lela Uphold, of Albright; one granddaughter, eight step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services with military honors were held Sunday afternoon at the Gum Cemetery on Back Mountain by Pastor Don Jacko.
