Virginia Walker

Virginia Walker, age 98, of Marlinton, died at Pocahontas Center of Monday, November 21, 2005.

Born at Marlinton January 28, 1907, she was the daughter of the late William and Susie Stewart Walker.

She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Her spouse was Jeff Covington.

Preceding her in death were four sisters, Cora Boggs, Sallie McChesney, Bernice Walker, and Leah Walker, and nine brothers, John Walker, Howard Walker, Harry Walker, Frank Walker, Edward Walker, Clarence Walker, Nathan Walker, James Walker, and George Walker.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at VanReenen Funeral Home by Greg Scott, with burial in the Brownsburg Cemetery.

Raymond H. McMillion

Raymond H. "Pops" McMillion, age 69, of Mauston, Wisconsin, died Sunday, November 27, 2005, at his home in Mauston, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2005, at the Roseberry's Funeral Home in Friendship, Wisconsin, Lester Collins officiating. Cremation will follow the traditional service with final interment in the Mt. Repose Cemetery of Friendship at a later date.

Mr. McMillion was born February 26, 1936, in Esty to Dana Bunyan and Stella May (Holmes-McMillion). He grew up in Esty before moving to Baltimore, Maryland, when he was 18. He was married to Mary Ester and to this marriage were born six children. He married Margaret Krout on August 12, 1981, in Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania , and they made their home in Adams, Wisconsin.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Terry Hibbard, of Portage, Wisconsin, and Debbie Combs, of Romney; sons, David McMillion, of Beloit, Wisconsin, James McMillion, of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Wayne McMillion, of Baltimore, Maryland, William McMillion, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Timothy McMillion, of Poquoson, Virginia, Ricky McMillion, of Moorefield, Charles Krout, of Marlinton; four sisters, Pauline McMillion and Maye McMillion, both of Marlinton, Virginia McMillion, of Ocean City, Maryland, and Tina Congdon, of Adams, Wisconsin; two brothers, Roger McMillion, of White Hall, Maryland, and Bill McMillion, of Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania , 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was an auto mechanic. He played, coached, and umpired softball games for many years, and also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and other sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Carl Lee and Sydney Roy, and one sister.

Marian McCarty Murphy

Marian McCarty Murphy, age 60, of Sayreville, New Jersey, died Sunday, December 11, 2005, at Robert Wood Johnson University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The daughter of Kyle McCarty, of Marlinton, and the late Ruby Clara McCarty, she was born in Marlinton, April 10, 1945.

Surviving her are her father; a daughter, Deborah Lea Judy, of Lakeworth, Florida; a son, Jon E. Tibbs, of Goode, Vir-ginia; two granddaughters, Taylor and Bailey Tibbs; a sister, Erma McCarty, of Sayreville, New Jersey; two brothers, Charles McCarty, of Beltsville, Maryland, and Steve McCarty, of Bowie, Maryland.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Clara McCarty, and two brothers, Gerald (Butch) McCarty and Robert Allen McCarty.

A memorial service will be held at the Marlinton United Methodist Church Saturday, December 17, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Robert Mann.

According to Marian's desire, she was cremated and her body will be interred at the Mountain View Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date.

Harold E. Simmons

Harold E. "Gene" Simmons, age 58, of HC69, Marlinton, died Monday, December 12, 2005, at his home.

The son of James Clem and Jane Estelle Sharp Simmons, he was born at Harter on November 4, 1947.

Mr. Simmons was a residential contractor. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Assembly of God.

His parents, a brother, Mark Allen Simmons, and a step-brother, Ernest Wilfong, are deceased.

He is survived by his wife, Dreama Grace Sharp Simmons; two sons, Harold Eugene Simmons, Jr., of Green Bank, and James Earl Simmons, of Marlinton; a sister, Pat Friel, of Butte, Montana; three brothers, James Edward Simmons, of Dallas, Texas , Marvin Lewis Simmons, of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, Clifford Milton Simmons, of Stafford, Virginia; three step-sisters, Belinda Sue Weneger, of Murray, Utah, Dreama Kay Fitzgerald, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Tiffany Starr, of Marlinton; and six stepbrothers, Robert Wilfong, of Baltimore, Maryland, Jerry Lee Fitzgerald, of Barboursville, Virginia, Howard Fitzgerald, of Stony Bottom, Berlin Fitzgerald, of Hillsboro, Dennis Michael Fitzgerald, of Marlinton, and John Ray Fitzgerald, of Cass; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Van-Reenen Funeral Home by Pastor David Angel. Burial will be at Mingo.

Memorial gifts may be made to First Assembly of God.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at VanReenen Funeral Home.

Edna Grace Hefner

Edna Grace Hefner, age 84, of White Sulphur Springs, died Thursday, December 8, 2005, at her home in White Sulphur Springs

Born March 31, 1921, in Pocahontas County, she was the daughter of the late Jessee and Lula Cline Nottingham.

Mrs. Hefner was a retired caretaker of the Rockefeller Estate in Pocahontas County. She was of the Protestant faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hunter Hefner, in 1996, and a sister, Mamie Miller.

Surviving her are a daughter, Patricia "Patsy" Tallman Lonsberry, of Summerville, South Carolina, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Robert Miller, of Marlinton, is a nephew.

Funeral services were held Sunday morning at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg by the Rev. Walter Ellison and the Rev. Charles Feury, with burial Sunday afternoon at the Dunmore Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice Care, 540 North Jefferson Street, Box 7, Suite D., Lewisburg, WV 24901.

Henry Hunter Smith

Henry Hunter Smith, age 84, of West Hamlin, died Wednesday, December 7, 2005, in a Huntington hospital.

Born September 4, 1921, in Pocahontas County, he was the son of the late John Francis and Maryellen Hoover Smith.

He is survived by his wife, the Rev. Nancy H. White ; sister, Osa Smith McLaughlin, of Marlinton; brother, Charles E. Smth, of Beckley; daughter, Carol Ann Smith, of Bluefield; step-son, David L. White ; two granddaughters.

Preceding him in death were four brothers, George C. Smith, James B. Smith, Jack E. Smith, and William S. Smith, and four sisters, Alice Smith Ervin, Annalee Smith Ervin, Marmette Smith Hancock, and Gail Smith Millsap, and his first wife, Helen Dillow Smith.

Hunter spent his childhood in Davis Stuart School, a Presbyterian children's home at Lewisburg. As a teenager, he lived in Bramwell and graduated from Bramwell High School. He served in the United States Army as a military policeman during World War II, and as a guard at the Potsdam Conference attended by President Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin, Charles deGaulle, and Winston Churchill.

Following his Honorable Discharge, he attended McLane Business College, then worked for the N&W Railroad in Bluefield, retiring after 35 years. He then worked as a courier for Smith, Klien Beechum for ten years. He served as a Scout Master for Troop 3 of the Boy Scouts of America, served on the Board of the Bluefield Union Mission, was an officer in the Kiwanis Club, and worked for a variety of civic projects. He was an active church leader in the United Methodist Church, sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent of Sunday School, Chairman of Trustees, and lay leader and delegate to Annual Conference. He was an avid gardener, grew special tomatoes from seeds and roses, was an accomplished stained glass craftsman, designing a variety of window hangings as well as a stained glass window in the chapel in a Bluefield hospital.

Services were held Saturday at the West Hamlin United Methodist Church.

Georgia May Burdette

Georgia May Burdette, age 83, of White Sulphur Springs, died Monday, December 12, 2005, following an extended illness, at the home of her son, Paul Richard Burdette, in White Sulphur Springs.

Born at Mill Point on January 2, 1922, she was the daughter of William and Elsie May Huffman Jackson.

She was retired from Burdette's Radio/TV and Cable System, a family-owned business for many years. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, White Sulphur Springs, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, in the Relief Society, and as a teacher/president of the Primary for 32 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Wyatt Burdette, on March 3, 1998; her brothers, William Alexander and Withrow Jackson Huffman; a sister, Sarah Elizabeth Huffman Bowes; a half-sister, Flora Alberta Sevy Simmons; a half-brother, Clarence E. Sevy; two grandchildren, Paula Mae Burdette and Travis Ray Burdette, and a great-grandson, Jerell Delbert Burdette.

Surviving her are three sons, Paul Richard Burdette, of White Sulphur Springs, Jerell Wyatt Burdette, of Hemet, California, and James Adrian Burdette, of Lenoir, North Carolina; a daughter, Brenda Kay Ettelson, of Roanoke, Virginia, one sister, Francis Merl Huffman Fraley, of White Sulphur Springs; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 17, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, White Sulphur Springs, with Curtis A. Webb officiating.

Interment followed in Ruckman Cemetery at Mill Point.

Memorial gifts may be made to Greenbrier Valley Hospice, 540 North Jefferson Street, Box 7, Lewisburg, WV 24901.

Nathan Allen Persinger

Nathan Allen Persinger was born at 2:29 a.m. on December 14, 2005, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. He died at 5:20 a.m. the same day.

He was the son of Stephanie Reene Jones and James Thomas Persinger, Jr.. Maternal grandparents are Steve and Jane Jones, of Lewisburg. Paternal grandparents are James T. Perry, Sr., of Ronceverte, and Esau and Cindy Ann Cantbery, of Logan.

Great-grandparents are Emmette Biggs, of Marlinton, and Bernie Persinger, of Ronceverte, and Mary Ann Cochran, of Clintonville. Paternal great-grandmother was the late Sylvia Workman and maternal great-grandmother was the late Opal Biggs.

Graveside service and burial were in Mountain View Cemetery at Marlinton on Saturday by Pastor Jerry Moore.
