Beryl Piper Elliott

Beryl Piper Elliott, age 98, of Green Bank, died June 5, 2006, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital in Marlinton.

Mrs. Elliott was born December 28, 1907, at Pisgah in Preston County, the daughter of the late William Roy and Sheilla Janet Walls Piper.

She was married to Granville H. Elliott, who preceded her in death in May 13, 2002. Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Coral A. King, of Morgantown, and Gladys Piper Grove, of Griffin, Georgia, two brothers, Marshall F. and Cecil Paul Piper, both of Morgantown, and one grandson, Timothy Scott Elliott.

She is survived by two sons, G. Samuel Elliott and Jerry P. Elliott, both of Charleston; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was Initial Home Management for Farmers Home Administration for two years in Nicholas, Webster, and Kanawha Counties, followed by Initial Program of Hot Lunch Program for six years in Kanawha County.

While living in Charleston for 30 years, she was a member of the Charleston Woman's Club, Blue Hills Garden Club, Kanawha Country Club, and continuing life member of Allied Artists of West Virginia, having been club treasurer. Mrs. Elliott studied art for five years with prominent art teacher, Marjery Griffen Clark. She was a member of Christ Church Methodist, where she received a life membership in the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was assistant teacher of Lilly Regar Class and Adult Women's Bible Class. Mrs. Elliott was the first Superintendent of the newly organized Junior Church Program and secretary of the Elliott Construction Company for 26 years.

She was an Emeritus Member of WVU; Life Member of Royal Neighbor of America and Phi Upsilon Omicron of Phi Upsilon Omicron; Honorary Home Economics, Honorary French Student, member of Kappa Phi. She was a member of Green Bank United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Pocahontas County Country Club, where she continued to play golf through her 93rd year.

Graveside services were held Saturday at the Arbovale Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Methodist Protestant Church, Green Bank Public Library, Gideons, or charity of choice.

Curtis E. Friel

Curtis E. Friel, of Baltimore, Maryland. died June 1, 2006.

Mr. Friel, formerly of Cass, was the son of the late Edna Friel.

His wife, Susan Sears Friel, preceded him in death.

He leaves a daughter, Lisa Gurski, a son, Wesley Sears, four grandchildren and a sister, Mildred Wolfe.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at Ambrose Funeral Home of Lansdowne in Baltimore, with burial in the Glen Haven Memorial Park.

Lettie Elizabeth Kelly

Lettie Elizabeth Hamrick Kelly, age 83, of Green Bank, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

A native of Clover Lick, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Maggie Hogan Hamrick.

She had served as an Inspector for the Daily Meter, Euclid, Ohio

She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Kelly is survived by her husband, Lolen O. Kelly; two daughters, Marie Dever, of Scappoose, Oregon, and Margaret Kelly, of Euclid, Ohio; one son, Charles L. Kelly, of Green Bank; eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were a daughter, Connie Kundrat, two sisters, Mamie Lindsey and Mary King, and a brother, Howard Hamrick.

Funeral services were held at VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton on Sunday by the Rev. David Rittenhouse, with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Yvetta Dawn Wickham

Yvetta Dawn Wickham, age 48, of Caldwell, Ohio, died at her home on June 8, 2006.

A native of Marlinton, she was born May 20, 1958, the daughter of Sue Jordan, of Marlinton, and the late Guy Bennett.

She was a disabled Food Service worker.

Surviving her are her mother; a daughter, Virginia Dawn Wickham, of Caldwell, Ohio; a son, Guy Arthur Wickham, of Bridgeport; two grandchildren; seven sisters, Avis Seldomridge and Diane Foe, both of Cass, Inez Bennett, of Parkersburg, Kimberly Finley, of Marlinton, Amber Neal, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Christy Clendenen, of Indiana, and Karen Woods, of Meadow Bridge; and six brothers, Randy Bennett, Eddie Bennett, Kevin Bennett, John Bennett, and Steven Bennett, all of Marlinton, and Mark Bennett, of Durcas.

Funeral services were held at VanReenen Funeral Home on Monday by the Rev. Julian Rittenhouse, with burial in Cochran Cemetery.

Paul L. Beverage

Paul L. Beverage, age 82, of Beckley, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, in Beckley.

He was the son of the late Jessee and Emma Vance Beverage, and was born at Marlinton December 3, 1923.

He was a retired employee of International Shoe Company, and had been a member of Marlinton Volunteer Fire Department, West Union Methodist Church, and Civilian Conservation Corps.

Mr. Beverage was a member of St. Mary's United Methodist Church.

His wife, Arlene VanReennen Beverage, preceded him in death. Also deceased are two brothers, Kenny Beverage and Walter Beverage.

Surviving him are three daughters, Sherry L. Brown, of Beckley, Charlotte A. Fertig, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Paula A. Dunham, of Scott Depot; two sisters, Geneva Hefner, of Marlinton, and Viola Showwalter, of Georgia; four brothers, Howard Beverage and Roscoe Beverage, both of Marlinton, Lake Beverage, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Carl Beverage, of Richwood; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton by the Rev. Steve Rector, with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Guy F. VanReenen

Guy F. VanReenen, age 82, of Old Buckeye Road, Marlinton, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, in the hospital at Roanoke, Virginia.

Born at Marlinton June 2, 1924, he was the son of the late J. Gilbert and Elsie S. Hull VanReenen.

He was a retired restaurant owner in Marlinton, and a member of Edray United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Army and was a member of the VFW.

Surviving him are two sons, Ronald G. VanReenen, of Wasilla, Alaska, and Stephen W. VanReenen, of Fredericksburg, Virginia; a sister, Betty J. Smith, of Marlinton; a brother, Donald G. VanReenen, of Elyria, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl F. VanReenen, son, Douglas G. VanReenen, and two brothers, J. Garth VanReenen and C. Glen VanReenen.

Graveside services were held Saturday morning at Beaver Creek Cemetery by Pastor Sam Felton.

Beulah M. Wake

Beulah M. Wake, age 92, of Clinton, Indiana, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at Vermillion Convalescent Center in Clinton.

Born in Marlinton January 22, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Ernest N. and Mittie I. Smead Carr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Wake, granddaughter, Paula K. Grimes, first husband, Ermon S. Grimes, eight brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Wake is survived by her son, Robert G. Grimes, of Prattville, Alabama, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 29, at Roselawn Memorial Park, Terre Haute, Indiana, by Rev. InSuk Hong-Peebles.

Orville L. Williams, Jr.

Orville L. Williams, Jr., 83, of Bartow, died July 19, 2006, in Beckley.

Born in Beckley on June 26, 1923, he was the son of the late Orville L. and Della Frances Workman Williams, Sr.

He attended Beckley College, studied engineering, and was an machinist, having retired from General Motors in 1978. He served in the U. S. Army from 1941 to 1943 and was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Cass.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian A. Nickels Williams; four sons, Orville L. Williams, III, of Terra Alta, Frank Williams, of Medina, Ohio, Wesley Williams, of West Salem, Ohio, and Kenneth Williams, of Vandalia, Michigan; three daughters, Frances Robbins, of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Alicia Benson, of Follansbee, and Julia Cagle, of Medina; a sister, Thelma Boyd, of Mount Tabor, two brothers, Robert Williams, of Prosperity, and Jim Williams, of Beckley; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Williams; two grandchildren, Edna Faye Gibson and Kenneth Ryan Williams; a brother, William W. Williams; and a sister, Alma Williams.

Service was held July 22 at Mount Tabor Baptist Church with Pastor Michael King officiating. Burial followed in Calfee Cemetery at Mount Tabor.

Robert G. Sanner

Robert G. Sanner, 65, of 228 Grant St., Dennison, Ohio, died Friday, August 4, 2006, in Wade Park Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, following a brief battle with cancer. Born October 31, 1940, in McKinry, he was a son of Louise Fernatt Sanner and the late Arvel Franklin Sanner.

A resident of the Twin City area for much of his life, Bob was a graduate of Dennison High School in the class of 1958. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1958-1969. Bob earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Houston and spent more than 30 years as a registered respiratory therapist. He was a member of Uhrichsville Moose Lodge #740 and Dennison Eagles Aerie #582. From 1999 to 2002, Bob had lived in the Marlinton area where he was the owner and proprietor of the B & B Roadhouse.

Bob is survived by his wife, Rebecca L. "Becky" Prather Sanner, whom he married in 1981; his mother, Louise Fernatt Sanner, of Uhrichsville; children, Robert G. Sanner, Jr., of New Philadelphia, Carol Boyd, Edward Sanner, Ann Smith, all of Chicago, Illinois; nine grandchildren; a great grandchild; a brother, Michael W. Sanner, of Tuscarawas; two sisters, Patty Dryden, of Uhrichsville, and Susie Herron, of New Philadelphia; an aunt, Alice Roberts of Meadowbridge,.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles C. Sanner, who died October 15, 2005.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 12, at 4 p.m. in the Dennison Eagles Aerie. In keeping with his wishes, his ashes will be scattered in West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his family to help defray the cost of his final expenses.
