Robert G. Viers

Robert G. Viers, age 75, of Buckeye, died Thursday, October 12, 2006, at Charleston Memorial Hospital.

The son of the late Floyd and Verna Walker Viers, he was born in Marlinton October 4, 1931.

He was a retired telescope operator at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and a member of the Buckeye Presbyterian Church. He was president of Pocahontas County Senior Citizens, a member of AARP, former Boy Scout leader, and Sunday School teacher and church treasurer.

Funeral services were held at VanReenen Funeral Home Sunday afternoon by the Rev. Betty Shields and the Rev. Cameron Harkness, with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

William "Pat" Woodford, Sr.

William "Pat" Woodford, Sr., age 75, of Durbin, died Thursday, October 26, 2006, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

Born February 24, 1931, at Huttonsville, he was the son of the late Floyd and Vergie Barb Woodford.

He was fondly known as "Pappy, and was a maintenance supervisor for Easco Alum. He was a Christian by faith.

Mr. Woodford was a member of the American Legion,, and was a United States Army veteran in Korea. He was on the Durbin Town Council.

His parents and a sister, Elsie Shreve, preceded him in death.

Surviving him are his wife, Betty Mullenax Woodford; two sons, William Patrick Woodford, Jr., of Greensboro, North Carolina, and David Bradley Woodford, of Warren, Ohio; and five granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale by the Rev. David Rittenhouse. Burial was in the Arbovale Annex Cemetery with military Honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Earl Milburn Sharp

Earl Milburn Sharp, 82, of Roanoke, Virginia, died October 3, 2006, after an extended illness.

Born March 30, 1924, Mr. Sharp was the second oldest of 14 children born to the late Charles J. and Ora Thompson Sharp, of Marlinton.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army Medical Corps in the European Theatre. In 1954, he received the Carnegie Medal of Honor for Heroism in recognition of his willingness to sacrifice everything to save the life of a drowning woman.

Mr. Sharp retired from the Greyhound Bus Company in 1985 after 34 years of service.

He loved the outdoors and was a talented hunter and fisherman, and told tales of growing up in Pocahontas County. In the 31 years since it began, Earl missed only one of the infamous Sharp Famiy Reunions held annually in Marlinton.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sharp was preceded in death by a son, Stanley R. Sharp, and two brothers, Jack A. Sharp and Charles H. "Hub" Sharp.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Mildred Kirkpatrick Sharp; one daughter, Phyllis A. Wilbur; two sons, Gregory H.Sharp, and Timothy W. Sharp; seven brothers, Lew Sharp, Dempsey "Dick" Sharp, Craig Sharp, Don Sharp, Tom Sharp, and Doug Sharp; five sisters, Catherine "Sis" Baechtel, Patricia Lamoureax, Brenda "Cookie" Doss, Charlotte Slagle, and Kay Burke; nine grandchildren, three great-granddaughters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 26, in the Simpson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ivey Adams officiating. A graveside service with military honors followed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ora T. Sharp Scholarship Fund, c/o Pendleton County Bank, Marlinton, WV 24954.

Renick L. Underwood

Renick L. Underwood, of Mims, Florida, formerly of Huntersville and Zelienople, Pennsylvania , died October 31, 2006, at Vista Manor Nursing Home in Titusville, Florida.

Born September 16, 1916, in Huntersville, he was the son of Duffy and Kenny Underwood. He was an iron worker for 34 years, retiring in 1981.

Mr. Underwood was preceded in death by his wife, Lola B. Underwood, who died December 23, 1999, and a son, Wayne, and a daughter, Judith.

Surviving are three sons, Charles and James, of Zelienople, Pennsylvania , Robert, of Sellerburg, Indiana; two daughters, Cora Sue Johnston, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and Patricia Quickle, of Charleston; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Reva Poland, of Phoenix, Arizona, Wanda Johnson, of Dunkirk, Maryland; brothers, James Melton Underwood, of Harmony, Pennsylvania , Kennie Underwood, of Marlinton, Joey Underwood, of Danville, Eugene Underwood, of Summersville.

Friends will be received at VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton, on Sunday, November 5, from 5:00 - 8:00.

Services will be Monday, November 6, at 1 p.m. at VanReenen Funeral Home with Norman Lee Alderman. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery, Huntersville.

Evelyn Withers

Evelyn Joyce Withers, age 87, of Marlinton, died Monday, November 6, 2006, at the home of Sue and Raymond Schultz in Marlinton, with whom she had been staying the past seven months.

Born in Marlinton October 30, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Wendell Withers and Elsie Lavada Hayslett Withers.

Evelyn first worked in the law office of P. T. Ward, then started working at The Pocahontas Times in 1945 and worked for 61 years, setting ads, printing, and bookkeeping. She was a Presbyterian.

Preceding her in death were her parents, four sisters, Arlene Camper, Ruth Dunbrack, Maxine Withers, and Viola Withers, and three brothers, Shannon Withers, Ivan Withers, Sr., and James Withers.

She is survived by two nieces, Sue Withers Schultz and Michelle Withers; six nephews, Jerry Withers, Charles Camper, Ivan Withers, Jr., Brent Withers, Matthew Withers, Brett Withers; great nieces, Kristie Haskett, Jennifer Laner, Charlene Walker, Rachel Church, and Amy Schultz, and two great-great-nieces, Sierra Withers and Jada Church; six great-nephews, William Withers, Brian Withers, Benjamin Withers, Kevin Withers, Adam Withers, and Casey Withers, and two great-great-nephews, Nicholas Mospan and Benjamin R. Withers.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at VanReenen Funeral Home by the Rev. Cameron Harkness, with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday night 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial gifts may be made to McClintic Libraries or Opera House Foundation.

Geneva May Hefner

Geneva May Hefner, age 92, of Marlinton, died Monday, November 6, 1906, at the home of Nancy and Scott Kelley in Frost.

She was born in Monterey, Virginia, May 13, 1914, the daughter of the late Jesse Uriah and Emma Lillian Lantz Beverage.

She was a member of the Edray United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Alllen Glen Hefner, is deceased. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Walter Beverage, Kenny Beverage, and Paul Beverage.

Surviving her are two sons, Allen Ray Hefner, of Maryland, and Gary Lee Hefner, of Marlinton; a sister, Viola Showalter, of Albany, Georgia; four brothers, Howard Beverage and Roscoe Beverage, both of Marlinton, Carl Beverage, of Richwood, and Lake Beverage, of Baltimore, Maryland; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Edray United Methodist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Robert Mann.

Visitation will be Friday 6 to 9 p.m. at VanReenen Funeral Home.

Memorial gifts may be made to Edray United Methodist Church.

Dorothy J. Peery

Mrs. Dorothy Jane Peery, age 89, a former resident of Bridgewater, Virginia, died Monday, October 30, 2006, at the Pocahontas Center in Marlinton.

A daughter of the late Ellett and Hattie Acord Hiner, she was born on November 3, 1916, in Highland County.

She had also made her home in Green Bank, prior to moving to Bridgewater in 1990. Mrs. Peery graduated from Monterey High School and had managed a variety store. She was a member of the Bridgewater Presbyterian Church.

On June 21, 1947, she married Gilbert M. Peery, who preceded her in death on August 30, 1999.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Payne, of Marlinton, and Claudia Downs, of Atlanta, Georgia; one granddaughter, three grandsons, two great-grandsons; and one brother, James Hiner, of Waynesboro, Virginia.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 4, at the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip W. Sommer officiating. Burial was private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bridgewater Presbyterian Church Piano Fund, 110 East College Street, Bridgewater, VA 22812, or American Cancer Society, 1920 Medical Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Patricia McLaughlin

Patricia "Jane" Russell McLaughlin, age 71, of Milton, died on her birthday, Friday, October 20, 2006, at Cabell-Huntington Hospital.

She was married to Gerald "Dale" McLaughlin for 47 years. Other survivors include her son, Jeffrey Allen McLaughlin, of Los Angeles, California; her daughter, Kimberly Dawn Stockemer, of North Hills, California; her two sisters, Maude Moore, of Stony Bottom, and Marlene "Molly" Ullom, of Barboursville; her two brothers, Henry Russell, of Summersville, and Allen Russell, of Milton. Her brother, Gene Russell, is deceased.

She was born October 20, 1935, in Summersville to Earl Hill Russell and Amelia Pearl O'Dell Russell, both deceased.

She was a semi-retired beautician and an adopted grandmother to many. She was an active member of the Culloden congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, October 25, at Wallace Funeral Home in Milton, with burial at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.
