Roy Pierce Simmons

Roy Pierce Simmons, age 82, of Craigsville, died Sunday, December 17, 2006, at Summersville Memorial Hospital, after a short illness.

He entered the Marine Corps at Paris Island and was discharged from San Diego, California. A Veteran of World War II, he survived the invasion of Iwo Jima and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of Hick-Hambrick Marine Corps League and was active in organization of young Marines. He was active in VFW in Craigsville.

Mr. Simmons was retired from Sewell Coal Company as a Superintendent. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Craigsville. He was a member of Hillsboro International Order of Odd Fellows, member of Richwood Moose Lodge, and an Admiral of Cherry River Navy in Richwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Bessie Boggs Simmons, and a brother, Jordan Simmons.

Surviving him are his wife, Barbara Roberts Simmons; two brothers, Paul Simmons, of Hillsboro, and Claude Simmons, of Craigsvillle; and a sister, Anita Rodebaugh, of Craigsville.

Funeral services were Wednesday, December 20, in St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Craigsville by the Rev. Steve Hamrick. Entombment was in West Virginia Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Calvin.

Carl Hunter Ryder

Carl Hunter Ryder, age 81, of Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania , died Saturday, September 9, 2006.

Born July 29, 1925, he was the son of the late Carl and Lucy Cassell Ryder.

Hunter lived his early years in Cass and attended Green Bank High School before entering the Navy.

He worked for Wilkensburg Water Authority for 30 years. He may have lived in Pennsylvania but he considered West Virginia his home.

He is survived by a daughter, Darlene Ryder. and a grandson, of Miami, Florida, and a sister, Roma Ryder, of Turtle Creek.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Blanch Oleksuk Ryder, brother, Paul, sister, Violet, and his parents.

Services were held at Jobe Funeral Home, Inc. Interment with military honors followed at Twin Valley Memorial Park.

Rev. Thomas Henderson

Rev. Thomas Edward Henderson, age 84, of Harrisonburg, Virgnia, died December 9, 2006, at Sunnyside Retirement Community.

Rev. Henderson was born November 18, 1922, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of the late James Harvey and Frances Walker Maine Henderson.

He was a 1940 graduate of Central High School, Fountain City, Tennessee, a 1946 graduate of Maryville College, Maryville, Tennessee, and a 1949 graduate of Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia.

During World War II, he served in the 49th Armored Infantry and was wounded in the Battle from the Rhur to the Rhine Rivers. He served churches in Churchville and Rose Hill, Virginia, Gastonia and Ellenboro, North Carolina, Green Bank and Burlington, and in McCoole, Maryland and Marion and Crayne, Kentucky.

He retired to Harrisonburg in November 1987, and served as a volunteer Chaplain at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He sang for 10 years with the Shenandoah Valley Choral Society, and served on their Board of Directors. He also served as Stated Supply and interim pastor at several area churches after his retirement. He attended the Trinity Presbyterian Church and was active in several house churches at Trinity and also sang in the choir. He moved to Sunnyside in December, 1999.

On August 19, 1945, he married Dorothy Genette Buchanan, who survives. Also surviving are three children, David E. Henderson, Chesire, Connecticut, Doris A. Henderson, Fort Washington , Maryland, John F. Henderson, Harrisonburg, Virginia, and two grandchildren.

The Rev. Paul O'Gorek and Rev. Dr. Ann Held conducted a memorial service Sunday at Meredith Chapel at Sunnyside Retirement Community. Burial was at Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church Cemetery in Harrisonburg.

Robert Kenneth Gillispie

Robert Kenneth Gillispie, age 83, of Temple Hills, Maryland, died Thursday, December 7, 2006, at Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, Maryland.

He was born February 20, 1923, in Green Bank, the son of Laura and Clyde Gillispie.

Robert served as a navigator in the Air Force during World War II. He went on to work for more than 30 years as a con-tracting officer for the Air Force.

Surviving him are his wife, Doris Simmons Gillispie, of Frank, two children, Michael Gillispie, of Alexandria, Virginia, and Denise Gillette, of Golden, Colorado, and three grandchildren.

Visitation was at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale.

Funeral service was held Saturday at noon in the Arbovale United Methodist Church by the Rev. Julian Rittenshouse. Burial followed in the Arbovale Cemetery.

Jessica ReneĢ Darden Davenport

ReneĢ Davenport, of Plymouth, North Carolina, age 37, died Monday, December 11, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, North Carolina, following a battle with cancer.

Born March 23, 1969, in Norfolk, Virginia, she was the daughter of Reuben B. Darden and Ernestine Gentili Foye, who survive.

Also surviving is her husband, Wayne Davenport, formerly of Marlinton, son of Stanley and Alice Davenport. They were married on May 18, 2001.

Other survivors include her brother, Anthony V. Darden, of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

A memorial service was held December 14 in the Roper Baptist Church with Pastor Howard Simpson officiating.

Vada Condee Smith

Vada Condee Smith, age 94, of Hendersonville, Tennessee, formerly of South Charleston and Grantsville, died Sunday, December 10, 2006.

Mrs. Smith was born April 13, 1912, in Marlinton.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Condee, as well as her second husband, Lewis W. Smith.

She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Pelham Boyers, of Hendersonville; son, David Condee, of Cross Lanes; and sisters, Mary Forbes, of Hendersonville, and Betty Eastwood, of Brentwood, Tennessee; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Cecil Owen Garretson

Cecil Owen Garretson, age 67, of Stafford County, Vir-ginia, died Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mr. Garretson was an independent contractor and very hard worker in the construction business. He was a life member of the Church of God and helped start Stafford Church of God and Spotsylvania Church of God. He also launched the Sunday school program at Fredericks-burg Church of God and King George Church of God.

He was raised in Pocahontas County.

Surviving are his wife, Rosella Garretson; two daughters, Denna Garcia and Catherine Haugh; one son, Troy Garretson; four sisters, Opal Workman, Bernice Meadows, Nancy Puffenbarger, and Maggie Morgan; five brothers, Donzie Garretson, Elize Garretson, Estil Garretson, Raymond Garretson, and Jimmy Garretson; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Mr. Garretson was the son of the late Rev. Estil and Clara Garretson. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Dean Garretson.

Funeral was held Saturday morning, November 18, at Stafford Church of God, followed by interment in Stafford Memorial Park.

Ralph Charles Hess, Jr.

Ralph Charles Hess, Jr., age 81 years, of Elkins, a well known business man of the area, died Sunday afternoon, February 18, 2007, at his home. He had been in declining health.

Born December 16, 1925, at Farmington, he was a son of the late Ralph Charles Hess, Sr., and Clara Marie Cotter Hess.

On August 16, 1973, he was married to the former Dorothy McLaughlin, who survives. Also surviving is one son, Dr. Ralph Charles Hess, III, of Ashland, Kentucky; one daughter, Melanie Piccirillo, of Elkins; and seven grandchildren.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by one sister, Jacqueline Smouse.

Mr. Hess was a graduate of Farmington High School with the Class of 1944. He spent two years in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 and engaged in three campaigns in the European Theatre of Operations with K Company, 120th Regiment, 30th Infantry Division. He was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant from the Signal Section, 1st Army Headquarters. He also served 10 months during the Korean Conflict at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He then entered Fairmont State College for five semesters and, while attending classes there, he also worked for Esso Standard Oil. He worked in various sales jobs for Esso, Standard Oil Company and Humble Oil Company for 13 years prior to coming to Elkins in 1962, at which time he bought out Ivan Teter, who then owned the Esso bulk plant on the Parsons Road. He owned and operated the Hess Oil Company on the Parsons Road for 27 years, retiring in 1987. Mr. Hess served as Director-General of the Mountain State Forest Festival in 1975. He has also served two terms as President of the Festival and continued to serve on its board until he was awarded the title of Director Emeritus in 2006. He also served two terms as President of the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce and served as a member of the Board of Directors at Davis Trust Company until he was awarded the title of Director Emeritus in 2006. He was a member of the Elkins Rotary Club for over 32 years and had served as its President. He had been active with the Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Silver Beaver Award in 1968 and in 1993 they honored him as their Distinguished Citizen of the Year. He had served two terms as president of the United Way of Randolph County and had also served as its campaign chairman. Exxon Company USA honored Mr. Hess with the Best Store Chain and Best Image Award in 1987 for the Richmond District, which covers West Virginia, Virginia, Washington , DC., and Maryland. He also served as President of the West Virginia Retailers Association and West Virginia Petroleum Marketers, as well as serving on their boards.

Mr. Hess was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was a member of Elkins Lodge No.1135, B.P.O.E., and the H. W. Daniels Post #29, American Legion.

The Beta Alpha Beta Business Fraternity of Davis & Elkins College honored Mr. Hess as its Businessman of the Year in 1975, and he was a recipient of the same award from the Elkins Jaycees in 1974. In 1991, Beta Alpha Beta presented Mr. Hess with the Gordan E. Hermanson Award for Great Service to Davis & Elkins College. He also served the college on its Board of Directors until he was awarded the title of Director Emeritus in 2006. He also served the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center on its Board of Directors until he was awarded the title of Director Emeritus in 2006.

Final rites were conducted Friday at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Doctor Ellis E. Conley and the Reverend Doctor Basil A. Hensley, and interment followed at the Maplewood Cemetery where the H. W. Daniel's Post #29, American Legion, presented the American Flag.
