Diana K. Cooper

Diana K. Cooper, age 98, of Silver Spring, Maryland, formerly of Marlinton, died Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at her home in Leisure World, Silver Spring, Maryland., after being bedridden for several months following a recent illness and hospital stay.

Mrs. Cooper was the widow of the late Adolph E. Cooper, longtime attorney in Marlinton, who died in 1981. She lived in Marlinton from 1933 until 1985. She was active in the Marlinton Woman's Club, was a member and Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, and worked on the restoration of the railroad.

Surviving are her daughter, Doris Ella Lustine, of Silver Spring, and son, Daniel Cooper, of Del Ray Beach, Florida, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband and brother, Leon Kronick, of Boca Raton, Florida.

Funeral service was held Sunday, February 18, at Adas Israel Congregation in Washington , D.C., with burial in Adas Israel Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of the Jewish Social Service Agency, 6123 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20852.

Ruth Taylor

Ruth Taylor, age 93, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, February 24, 2007, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center in Elkins.

A native of Queens, she was born November 5, 1913, the daughter of the late Albert C. Wamsley and the late A. Lelah Hoover Wamsley.

She was the widow of the late Rev. Don C. Taylor, who died June 20, 1958. He was a former minister of the Marlinton United Methodist Church. They were married October 4, 1937.

Also preceding her in death were her parents and three brothers, Simon, Morris and Doyle Wamsley.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by daughter, Ruthine Gee, of Buckhannon, two granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mescal Pugh, of Buckhannon.

Mrs. Taylor was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Buckhannon, from 1959 until her health limited her activity, serving on several boards and committees through the years. She was a graduate of Upshur County High School, West Virginia Wesleyan College, and West Virginia University masters program in education. Mrs. Taylor taught in the Upshur County School for 21 years before retiring in 1978, but substituted for several years thereafter. She was active in the West Virginia Education Association, serving as a delegate to many state, regional and national meetings.

Funeral service was held February 28 at First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon by the Rev. Damon Rhodes, with burial in the Heavner Cemetery, Buckhannon.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Buckhannon Scholarship Fund or the Upshur County Paris House in Buckhannon.

Charlotte Nottingham Deputy

Charlotte Nottingham Deputy, age 71, of Saint Augustine, Florida, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Flagler Memorial Hospital in Saint Augustine.

Charlotte was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Marlinton High School and attended Marshall College. She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Born April 12, 1936, at Dunmore, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Nottingham and the late Helen Galford Nottingham Galford.

In addition to her parents, a sister, Joyce Allen, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Marshall E. Deputy; daughter, Tracey Lee Deputy, of Saint Augustine, Florida; great-nephew, Winston Blackwelder, of Saint Augustine; two brothers, Russell Nottingham, of Amherst, Ohio, and Donald Nottingham, of Dunmore.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton.

Funeral service will be at VanReenen Funeral Home at 11 a.m., Friday, with the Rev. Robert Mann officiating. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Marlinton.

Norman H. Oscar

Norman H. Oscar, 66, of Mill Point, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, surrounded by his family.

He was born November 23, 1940, at Mill Point and was preceded in death by his mother, Faye Oscar.

Mr. Oscar is survived by his wife, Linda Hester Oscar, and sons, Brandon and Justin.

The family asks that donations be made to Hospice Care of Elkins in lieu of flowers.

Luke H. Miller

Luke H. Miller, age 46, of Robertsdale, Pennsylvania , died Wednesday, April 11, 2007.

Born on August 27, 1960, at Marlinton, he was the son of the late Brown and Clara Belle Miller.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Annette; three sons, Luke Charles, at home, Danny, Michael, and one grandson, of Pennsylvania ; daughter, Rebecca Ann, at home; three sisters, Edna Rachel Scott, of Buckeye, Pearl Mae Grimes, of Marlinton, and Betty Jane Willet, of Baltimore, Maryland; and two brothers, John W. Miller, of Elkview, and Paul M. Miller, of Alderson.

Funeral and Mass were held at the Immaculate Conception Church at Dudley, Pennsylvania , on Monday.

James "Tra" Elliott, III

James "Tra" Elliott, III, age 16, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007, from injuries in a boating accident in Conway, South Carolina.

Tra was born on February 22, 1991, in Lewisburg, the son of James Franklin Elliott, II, and Tamera Ellen Sims Elliott.

He was a sophomore at Carolina Forest High School and worked at the Rivertown Bistro.

Tra loved the outdoors, including hunting and fishing.

Surviving in addition to his father, of Green Bank, and his mother, of Conway, are his stepfather, Jackie D. Lewis, of Conway; paternal grandmother, Phyllis Elliott Sheets, of Green Bank; paternal great-grandmother, Anna Mae Elliott, of Green Bank; maternal grandparents, Jim and Carolyn Sims, of Huntersville, North Carolina, and Paula Ghorley, of Stanley, North Carolina; and maternal great-grandmother, Mary Ellen Sims, of Charlotte, North Carolina.

A graveside service was held Friday, April 6, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway, with the Rev. J. Kirk Lawton officiating.

Mary Barnes Thacker

Mary Barnes Thacker, age 95, of Baltimore, Maryland, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

She was born October 1, 1911, and raised on Bucks Run. Her parents were the late David P. Barnes and Eloise Kee Barnes.

She was one of five daughters. Pre-deceasing her were Mildred B. Brown and Glenna B. Hayes. Still living are Pearl Burns, of Hampton, Virginia, and Grace Tefft, of Tucson, Arizona.

She was married for 51 years to Berkeley D. Thacker, of Craigsville, Virginia, who died in 1992.

Mrs. Thacker is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Kee Carlson and Sandra R. Thacker, and three grandchildren.

She started showing horses at about age five and continued until she married at 29 years old. She enjoyed showing horses mostly for the Dickson brothers who had their horses at The Greenbrier Hotel. She was also an accomplished seamstress and retired from the tailoring profession. She moved to Baltimore shortly after marrying in 1941.

Burial was Saturday, April 7, at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton, Virginia.

Barry L. Lane

Barry Lee Lane, age 45, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Lane was born August 2, 1961, in Marlinton, and was a son of Mary Gum Lane, of Berkeley Springs, and the late Jesse James Lane.

He was educated in West Virginia schools and moved to Harrisonburg 20 years ago. He was employed with Nielsen Construction until 2002 when his health declined. He was a member of Faith Community Church.

On February 29, 1996, he married Sandra Jean Hart, who survives.

In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by a daughter, Tiffany Lane, of Elkton, Virginia; two brothers, James Lane, of Winchester, Virginia, and Richard Lane, of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Barbie Lane, of Berkeley Springs, and Franny Lane, of Maryland; and four grandchildren.

Pastor Keith Hulton conducted a graveside service Wednesday at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to RMH Cancer Center.
