Michael Camden Moses

Michael Camden Moses, age 70, of Ronceverte, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2007, at his home in Ronceverte.

Born December 15, 1936, in Marlinton, he was the son of Ruby Michael Moses, of Ronceverte, and the late Dorsey Camden Moses.

Mike was a graduate of Marlinton High School and was a graduate of Huntington Barber College. He was of the Methodist faith and was a retired barber.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline Dearfield Moses, and his mother, Ruby Michael Moses, both of Ronceverte.

Graveside service was held Tuesday morning at Mountain View Cemetery in Marlinton, with Earl Michael and Robert Michael officiating.

Elwood Barkley

Elwood Barkley, age 81, of Renick, died Friday, August 3, 2007, at his home following a long illness.

Born July 4, 1926, at Italy, Pendleton County, he was the son of the late Granville Cecil and Macel Marie Vance Barkley.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Launa Marie Crane, his second wife, Phyllis Dawn Poage, sons, Steven and Shannon Barkley, granddaughter, Launa Sue Barkley, and a sister, Jessica Barkley.

Mr. Barkley was a 53 year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of Renick Baptist Church and was a retired construction driller and powder foreman.

Survivors include his daughters, Brenda Cohernour, of Renick, Phyllis Cox, of Renick, and Teresa Johnston, of Frankford; sons, Ricky Barkley, of Hillsboro, David Barkley, Brian Barkley and Scott Barkley, all of Renick; sister, Georgia Rudd; 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and many friends.

Graveside service was held Tuesday, August 7, at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg, with the Rev. Thomasena Stewart officiating. Masonic rites were conducted by Pocahontas Lodge #121 AF&AM.

Donations of sympathy may be made to Greenbrier Valley Hospice.

Col. Robert K. Moore

A memorial service for Col. U.S.A. Robert K. Moore will be held Friday, August 24, at 3 p.m. at Mountain View Mausoleum with the Rev. Cameron Harkness officiating.

Col. Moore, age 85, of Melbourne, Forida, died May 16, 2007, in Melbourne.

A native of Huntersville, he was born February 1, 1922, the son of the late Elihu H. and Lola Kate McElwee Moore.

He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Ryanna Moore, who is now residing at Towne Square Assisted Living facility in Melbourne, and daughter, Marianne.

He attended elementary school in Huntersville and graduated from Marlinton High School in 1939. He entered the Army in 1942 and received a Second Lieutenant's Commission in 1943, He attended flight training and later flew an observation plane in Europe with the 10th Armored Division during World War II. He pursued the Army as a career and served in various Army posts in Aberdeen, Maryland, St. Louis, Missouri, Armed Forces Far East, Korea, Japan, and Washington , D.C. In 1962 he attended the Army War College in Pennsylvania leading to an assignment as Commander of an Aviation Group in Germany and was promoted to Colonel. His last military assignment was Executive Officer to the Assistant Secretary of the Army in the Pentagon and he retired after 27 years of military service in 1969. He was Plant Manager for The Bendix Corp. at Lewisburg until 1974, then Business Manager at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank from 1974 to 1983. He then served as Development Coordinator for Pocahontas County on a volunteer basis. He and his wife moved to Florida in 1988.

His military career included the Army command and general staff and U.S. Army War College. During his last tour of duty he was instrumental in the development of the Army Aviation Program as Executive Office to Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Development.

In Florida he served as a member of the Retired Officers Association, Cape Canaveral Chapter and Survivors Assistance Organization at IRCC.

A celebration of his life was held in May at Beach Funeral Home West Chapel, Melbourne/Suntree.

Neva G. Plyler

Neva G. Hill Plyler, age 103, of Green Bank, died Friday, August 17, 2007, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital in Buckeye.

Neva and her husband were owners of a store in Cass for several years.

She was born October 26, 1903, at Onoto, the daughter of the late Richard W. Hill and the late Anna Duncan Hill.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Oney E. Plyler, son, Edward Plyler, daughter, Margaret Wooddell, brothers, Tempest V. Hill, LeRoy "Crip" Hill, James O. Hill, Isaac D. Hill, and sisters, Mary R. Neighbor and Arlene Bowers, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Anna Plyler Ervine, of Dunmore; one brother, Dale Hill, of Green Bank; eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held at VanReenen Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, August 19, with Pastor Julian Rittenhouse officiating. Interment was at Cochran Cemetery in Onoto.

Elizabeth Kesler Kershner

Elizabeth Kesler Kershner, age 84, of Tallahassee, Florida, died Friday, August 17, 2007.

She was born in Dunmore on December 31, 1922, the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Elizabeth McQuain Kesler. The family moved to Clover Lick while she was an infant, where she resided through her childhood.

Mrs. Kershner served as a clerk in the Pocahontas rationing office during World War II and later worked for several years at the Bank of Marlinton.

She married Wallace Kershner, of the Droop Mountain area, in 1958.

Surviving her are one daughter, Ann Harper, and husband, Lewis, of Florida; two brothers, Earl M. Kesler, of State College, Pennsylvania , and Ray M. Kesler, of Morgantown; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Kershner was a dedicated member of the Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents and husband, a sister, Nellie K. Isaacs, and brothers, Ligon I. Kesler and Alfred C. Kesler, preceded her in death.

Funeral service and burial were at the Culleys Home for Funerals and Memorial Park in Tallahassee.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Ronald Shawn Gordon

Ronald Shawn Gordon, age 29, died on July 15, 2007, from injuries received in a motorcycle accident.

He was the son of Sue Ellen Welder Gordon and Ronald R. Gordon, of Falling Waters.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sons, Alex, Zachary and Austin, and a sister, Heather Leab, and niece and nephew, all of Martinsburg.

Memorial service was held at Brown Funeral Home, in Martinsburg.

Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery, in Marlinton, on October 13.

Lloyd Bryant Cassell

Lloyd Bryant Cassell, age 82, of Dunmore, died Friday, October 5, 2007, at the Veteran's Hospital, in Martinsburg.

Born at Cass on June 26, 1925, he was a son of the late Jim and Edna Cook Cassell.

He was a retired boiler fireman at Howe's Leather Company and was a World War II Navy Veteran. He was a member of the Church of God.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were a daughter, Barbara Wagner, and a sister, Beulah "Sis" Ervine.

Cassell is survived by two daughters, Elaine Landis, of Franklin, Nancy Wagoner, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; step-daughter, Colleen Queen, of Cass; step-son, Edward Taylor, of Cleveland, Ohio; three sisters, Laura Dean and Phyllis Ashbridge, of North East, Maryland, and Ellen Garr, of Mountain City, Tennessee; a brother, Sam Cassell, of Cass; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale by the Rev. Tony Samons. military graveside rites were conducted by the Pocahontas County VFW at the Wanless Cemetery.

Carolyn "Kay" Wilfong

Carolyn "Kay" Wilfong, age 66, of Bartow, died Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

Born May 10, 1941, in Hinton, she was a daughter of the late Lamer and Rose Bell McCall Biggs.

Kay was a homemaker and was a member of Calvary Gospel Church.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were two sisters, Thelma Petrey and Louise Broyles.

Surviving her are her husband, James F. Wilfong; two daughters, Donna Rexrode, of Durbin, and Barbara Friel, of Marlinton; two sons, Mike Wilfong and Danny Wilfong, both of Fredericksburg, Virginia; sister, Geraldine Carr, of Buckeye; brother, Ira Lacy Biggs, of Hillsboro; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale by the Rev. Harold Swecker. Burial was in the Arbovale Cemetery.
