Raymond James Cochran

Raymond James Cochran, age 62, of Marlinton, died Friday, October 12, 2007, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea after a short illness.

Born November 3, 1944, at Renick, he was the son of the late John and Mary Rigsby Cochran.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Thomasson.

Raymond attended Covington Schools, then got his GED and was a retired bricklayer. He also attended Greenbrier Community College with Veterans Upward Bound Program and was awarded the Achievement Award for 2001-2002. He was an Army veteran, a member of Moose Lodge #2233, Pocahontas Search and Rescue, and the American Legion. He was an amateur radio operator as a hobby.

Surviving him are his wife of 24 years, Betty Jane; two sons, Raymond James, Jr., "Pete" of Staunton, Virginia, and William David, of Marlinton; two daughters, Cynthia Ann Miller, of Renick, and Patricia Louise Cochran, of Roanoke, Virginia; six sisters, Shirley Southers, Sue Cochran, Pam Cochran, and Carlene Lane, all of Roanoke, Bessie Whitt, of Frankford, Betty Jane Suttle, of North Carolina; five brothers, Johnny Clyde "Sonny", of Florida, Gary, of Fincastle, Virginia, Mike, of Georgia, Walter "Blu", of Hopewell, Virginia, and Freddie, of Buckeye; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Service was held Monday afternoon at Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with burial in Morningside Cemetery at Renick.

James Oval Tipton

James Oval Tipton, age 91, of Frankford, died Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea.

Born July 19, 1916, at Frankford, Mr. Tipton was the son of the late Henry and Rosie Woolard Tipton.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, Troy and Handley Tipton, and sisters, Lucy Tipton and Bertha Madison.

Mr. Tipton was a member of Enon Baptist Church at Frankford. He worked for the West Virginia Department of Highways and was a World War II Army Veteran.

Surviving him are his wife, Thelma Blankenship Tipton; sons, James "Buster" Tipton and wife, Rebecca, Ronnie Tipton and wife, Teresa, of Frankfort; daughters, Lillian Hammons and husband, Roger, of Frankford, and Wilma Tipton and friend, Alvin Reneau, of Dandridge, Tennessee; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brothers, Basil Coleman, of Frankford, and Winters Tipton, of Toledo, Ohio; and foster daughter, Peggy Madison.

Service was held Friday afternoon at Enon Baptist Church in Frankford with the Rev. Steve Barnette officiating. Burial followed at the Enon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Roger Dairell Johnson

Roger Dairell Johnson, age 54, of Lewisburg, died at his residence on Thursday, October 11, 2007, following a short illness.

Born at Richwood on March 6, 1953, he was the son of Dairell Leo and Eva Green Johnson.

Mr. Johnson spent his early years in Webster County and then moved to Greenbrier County where he resided until his death. Following his college career at West Virginia Institute, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and, upon completion of his service, returned to Greenbrier County. Mr. Johnson was a avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors.

Survivors include three brothers, Floyd Johnson and wife, Jeri, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Ellis Johnson, of Lewisburg, and Carl Johnson and wife, Cindy, of Hillsboro; two sisters, Yevette Shafer and husband, Danny, of Lewisburg, and Wynona Redman and husband, Henry, of Harts Run; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service was held Sunday, October 14, at Frankford Chapel of McCraw Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Miller officiating.

David E. Spray
Memorial Service

There will be a service in remembrance of David E. Spray, formerly of Boyer, at Kerr Chapel Church, with Rev. William Vandevender, on Sunday, November 11, at 11 a.m.

All those who knew him are asked to attend and take part in this memorial service.

Barbara Fisher Kildare

Barbara Fisher Kildare, age 58, a resident of Valley Head, passed away Friday, October 26, 2007.

She was born June 2, 1949, at Kentfield, California, a daughter of Eleanor Y. Fisher, of Winter Park, Florida, and the late Russell Frederick Fisher.

She is survived by one daughter, Carly Kildare, of Morgantown, two brothers, William Fisher, of Houston, Texas , and Larry Fisher and wife, Stacy, of Apopka, Florida, a sister, Julie Fisher, of Longwood, Florida, and an aunt, Jean C. Yothers, of Orlando, Florida.

Barbara was a Master Gardener and a 25 year employee of Snowshoe Mountain Resort. She graduated from the Potomac Horse Center and taught horseback riding at Lochill Farms in Hillsborough, North Carolina. She was a member of the American Dairy Goat Association and had served on the Board of Valley Health Care. She had a great and passionate love of animals, gardening and the outdoors. She was loved by everyone and will be missed by all.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 1, at the Elk River Inn. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Russell Rescue Inc., P.O. Box 4324, Lutherville, MD. 21094, www.russellrescue.com.

Shirley Hamrick Radcliff

Shirley S. Hamrick Radcliff, age 67, of Melbourne, Florida, died Monday, October 29, 2007, at her home in Melbourne, Florida.

Shirley was a homemaker.

Born at Marlinton on December 9, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Porter Hamick and the late Elsie Sharp McLaughlin.

Surviving her are her husband, David M. Radcliff; one daughter, Panda Pyles Harris, and two sons, Derry Pyles and Zon Pyles.

Funeral service was held Friday, November 2, at South Brevard Funeral Home, Melbourne, Chaplain Ann Taylor Owen officiating.

Graveside service was held at Cochran Cemetery Monday afternoon with the Rev. Robert Shields officiating. Interment was at Cochran Cemetery at Onoto.

Ray Junior Varner

Ray Junior Varner, age 81, formerly of Bedford, Pennsylvania , died Saturday, November 3, 2007, at Specialty Care Home in Marietta, Georgia.

Born November 27, 1925, in Elkins, he was the son of the late James Hendrick Varner and Effie Lou "Birdie" Simmons Varner.

Mr. Varner was retired from the American Can Company.

He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Shreve Varner; a son, Gary Varner and wife, Jeanie, of Glen Burnie, Maryland; two daughters, Anna Stefan and husband, Darrell, Woodstock, Georgia, Anita Bull, Aberdeen, Maryland; a sister, Lucille Varner, of Elkins; four grandchildren: Eric Varner, Bedford, Pennsylvania ; Jason Varner, Delaware; David Lewis, Aberdeen, Maryland, Christina Lewis, Baltimore Maryland; and six great-grandchildren, Raymond L. Branden, Chyene, Ethan, Breanna and Matthew Varner.

A graveside service was conducted on Tuesday at Zion Memorial Park in Cumberland, Maryland.

Cecil Emmet Hickman

Cecil Emmet Hickman, age 58, of Hillsboro, passed away on November 6, 2007, at the Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, after a lengthy illness.

He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was a big fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers football, country music and bluegrass, especially the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys. He had a love for all his cats and loved hunting with his close and dear friend, Richard Fowler.

He was born on May 29, 1949, in Hillsboro, the son of the late Lillie Oscar and Charles Albert Sidney Hickman.

In addition to his parents, his brothers, Thomas Lee Oscar, Samuel William Hickman, and John Laney Hickman, and his step-mother, Mary Frances Hickman, preceded him in death.

He is survived by 13 sisters, Dorothy Hickman, Mamie Oscar, both of Kearneysville, Virginia Barnett, of Roanoke, Virginia, Lucy Persinger, Mary Brooks, both of Rainelle, Nadine Hanna, of Renick, Rebecca Schepleng, of Marlinton, Frances Galford, of Lewisburg, Lennie Sowers, of Beltsville, Maryland, Bertie Chandler, of Largo, Maryland, Rosie Moxley, of Hyattsville, Maryland, Martha Thompson, of Maryland, and Betty Beck, of Verona, Virginia; 10 brothers. Albert Hickman, of Shepherdstown, Herman Oscar, of Catlett, Virginia, Wilson Oscar, of Advance, North Carolina, Dick Hickman, of West Palm Beach, Florida, Charlie Hickman, Leroy Evans, both of Hillsboro, Kenneth Evans, of Seebert, John Evans, of Marlinton, James Hickman, of Rainelle, and Edgar Evans, of Monterey, Virginia; step-mother, Amanda Jane Pennington, of Hillsboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Service was held on Saturday, November 10, at VanReenan Funeral Home with the Rev. Norman Alderman officiating. Burial with military Honors was in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Charles Statt Hannah

Charles Statt Hannah, 78, of Oceana, passed away Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at Princeton Community Hospital from a sudden illness.

Born November 13, 1928, in Pocahontas County, he was the son of the late Ira Thomas Hannah, Sr., and Hazel Virginia Weatherholt Powell.

Mr. Hannah attended the Oceana First Church of God and was co-owner of Wyoming Plumbing and Heating in Oceana. He was employed by Eastern Associated Coal Company for 41 years. Statt was an avid hunter, never met a stranger, loved spending time with his family and friends and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, his brothers, Ira Thomas Hannah, Jr., Clenston Hannah, Kirk Hannah and Sabin Hannah, sisters, Millicent Brandstetter, Jewel Lee Simmons, Lucille Delaney and Ethel Hensley preceded him iin death.

Survivors include his loving wife of 32 years, Eva Marie Broyles Hannah, a daughter, Marshal Hannah Thompson, of Pineville, his granddaughter whom he loved so much, Chelsea Hannah Thompson, of Pineville, a step-son, Jimmy Dilley, and his wife, Barbara, of Clover Lick; a brother, Ralph Hannah, of Matheny; two sisters, Edith Hannah, of Buckeye, and Sue Hollandsworth, of Slaty Fork; two step-granddaughters, Rebecca Dilley, of Buckhannon, and Abby Dilley, of Clover Lick; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of special friends also survive him,.

Services were held Saturday in the Evans Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Wagoner and Mason Hannah officiating.

Visitation was held Sunday afternoon at the VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton, and burial followed in the Ruckman Cemetery, Mill Point.

Millicent Jane Hannah Branstetter

Millicent Jane Hannah Branstetter, age 85, of Torance, California, passed away October 11, 2007.

She was born May 1, 1922, at Buck's Run, Marlinton, the daughter of the late Ira T. Hannah and Rebecca Collins.

Preceding her in death were her stepmother, Hazel Weatherholt Powell; her husband, John, son Michael, sisters, Ether Hincher, Lucille Dulaney, Jewell Simmons; brothers, Ira Hannah, Jr., Clinston, Kirk, Sabin, and Statt Hannah, who passed away last week.

Surviving her are daughters, Jolene Poindexter, Janet Gout, Kathy Economy; brother, Ralph Hannah, and sisters, Ida Edith Hannah, and Rebecca Sue Hollandsworth; and a dear friend, Jenney Doodley, of Ocean City, Maryland.

She was a graduate of Marlinton High School, later working for the Pentagon during World War II. She later moved to California to work for Douglas Aircraft until her retirement.
