Norma H. Haid, 81, of Scott Depot died December 26, 2003 in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Anna Hudson, and her son, John Christopher Haid.
She was a retired secretary from the Putnam County Board of Education and was also a former secretary for Scott-Teays Elementary School, Scott Depot, and Union Carbide, South Charleston. She was a volunteer at Thomas memorial Hospital, a United States Navy veteran of World War II and was involved in the PTA when her children were younger.
Surviving: husband, Kenneth A. Haid; son, Kenneth A. Haid Jr. of Moorefield; grandchildren, Tanner and Keegan Haid of Arthur, Whitney and Kendra Sublette of Moorefield.
Memorial mass was held Friday, January 2, 2004, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, St. Albans, with Father Patrick M. McDonough as celebrant. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Avon Leslie Jividen
Avon Leslie Jividen, 77, of Robertsburg, died Saturday, December 27, 2003, following a short illness.
He was retired from AVTEX Fibers with 27 years of service and was also employed by the Mountaineer Power Plant, New Haven. He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: wife, Donna Jividen of Robertsburg; sons, Rodger L. and Gary D., both of Buffalo; daughter, Brenda K. Hill of Buffalo; brother, Herman Jividen of Huntington; six grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Carl Bailes and Pastor Arliss Blackshire officiating. Burial was in Walker Chapel Cemetery, Robertsburg.
Barbara Kay Harmon
Barbara Kay Harmon, 44, of Hometown died December 30, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Randy Harris, maternal grandparents, Virgil and Geneva Hutchinson, and paternal grandparents, Walter and Mae Harris.
Surviving: husband, Charles Harmon; parents, Kenneth and Juanita Harris of Leon; children, Charles Harmon Jr. of Ft. Hood, Texas , Michelle Dawn Harmon and Katie-Mae Lynn Harmon, both of Hometown; brothers, Kenneth “Bo” Harris and Ronnie Harris, both of Leon; sister, Tammy Harris; grandchildren, Joshua Moore and Jon-Curtis Lee Harmon.
Service was held Friday, January 2, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with the Rev. Billy Carter officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.
Cathrine Madge Searls
Cathrine Madge Searls, 68, of Hurricane died December 29, 2003, at home.
She was a member of Hometown Church of God Mission.
Surviving: her husband of 40 years, Denver Searls; son, Denver Lee and wife Cheryl Searls of Hurricane; brothers, Joe and J.B. King, both of Bancroft; sisters, Charlotte Erwin of Hurricane and Naola Estep of Boone County; three stepchildren.
Service was held Thursday, January 1, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Darren Persinger officiating. Burial was in Searls Family Cemetery, Hurricane.
Icie M. Wolfe
Icie M. Wolfe, 90, of Hurricane died Monday, December 29, 2003, at home following a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her son, Earl Eugene Wolfe, and daughter, Eloise Kinder.
Surviving: son, John “Junior” Wolfe of Orlando, Florida; daughter-in-law, Mary Wolfe of Hurricane; sister, Wilma Vance of South Charleston, Peg Belcher of Ravenswood, Pat Cochran and Marie Cochran, both of Liberty; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
Robert M. Armstrong
Robert M. “Marvin” Armstrong, 66, of Hurricane died December 30, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Surviving: wife, Betty Armstrong; son, Rob Armstrong of Hamlin, James Armstrong of Florida, Brian Armstrong of Nitro, Ben Allison of Hurricane, and Robbie Allison of Culloden; daughter, Teresa Stover of Nitro; brother, Tom Armstrong of Nitro; sisters, Roberta Marazo and Ella Britton of Florida; nine grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, January 2, 2004, at Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Loretta M. Robinson
Loretta M. Robinson, 73 of Winfield died December 31, 2003, at home.
Born July 24, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Blanche Vannoy Surface.
Surviving: her husband of 54 years, James M. “Dan” Robinson; son and his wife, James Michael and Debbie Robinson of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter, Karen Sue Brumbaugh of Winfield; grandchildren, Loretta Brooke and Brittany Brumbaugh, Heather, Mark and Dan Robinson; brother and his wife, Richard and Frances Surface of South Charleston; sisters, Sandy Graves of Nitro and Janice Miller of Medina, Ohio; niece, Pam Jensen of Teays Valley; lifelong friends, Betty and Ron Gregory of California.
Service was held Saturday, January 3, 2004, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, Charleston, with Mr. Steven Arden officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Rev. James C. Baker
The Rev. James C. Baker, 69, of Hurricane died December 30, 2003, at his residence.
He was preceded in death by daughters, Baby Baker and Rena Lee Baker; parents, Walter O. and Bertha Dorman Baker, brothers, Henry Lee and Kenneth Baker.
He retired in 1999 from the Hurricane First Church of the Nazarene, after 33 years in the ministry. He pastored churches in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia. After his retirement, he became a fulltime evangelist.
He was a 1954 graduate of Alderson High School and of Trevecca Nazarene University, Nashville, Tennessee. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran with 8 1/2 years of service, having served in the
Korean War.
He was a member of the Teays Valley Ministerial Association and Market Place Ministry. He served on the Board of Evangelism, Church of the Nazarene West Virginia South District Ministerial Credentials & Studies Board and the Home Mission Board and traveled the world with Work & Witness Teams for the Church of the Nazarene. He was instrumental in the Clyde Dupin Crusade in Brazil, Indiana and Hurricane.
Surviving: wife, Nettie G. Smith Baker; daughters and a son-in-law, Audrea and Jan Rittenhouse of Graham, Texas , Carolyn Halloway of Hurricane; extended family, Stephen, Yumiko and Stephanie Schaeffer of Hurricane; sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Ernie Farmer of Lewisburg, Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Sandra Baker of Hendersonville, Tennessee and Della Baker of Branson, Missouri; brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter “Bones” Baker of Alderson, John and Marcy Baker of Fishersville, Virginia, Joe and Shirley Baker of Alderson; grandchildren, Jordan Blair and Tayler Morgan Rittenhouse; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Saturday, January 3, 2004, at Hurricane First Church of Nazarene with Dr. Mervin Smith and the Rev. Phil Bower officiating. Burial was in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville, with military rites. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Juanita B. Doby
Juanita B. Doby of Hurricane died December 29, 2003, after a short illness.
She was director of Henry Logan Children's Home, Parkersburg, for 10 years.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Karen Doby of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; brother, Joe Bailey.
Service was held Friday, January 2, 2004, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.

Joseph R. Brewer, 72, of Poca died January 1, 2004, with his wife and daughters by his side.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Ray and Irene Truett Brewer, and sister, Jane Ann Brewer.
He was employed by Monsanto Company and retired with 37 years of service. He was later employed by Union Carbide.
He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the
Korean War. He was a member of Poca Baptist Church and a former member of Riverside Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, teacher and lay speaker.
Surviving: his wife of 51 years, Mary Lou EvansBrewer; daughters and a son-in-law, Jodie Brewer of Poca, Teresa and Everett Shockley of Pulaski, Virginia; granddaughters and their husbands, Amber and John Whitman of Scott Depot, Cristin and Bruce Watson of Sterling, Virginia; a host of loving family, neighbors and friends.
Service was held Sunday, January 4, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Jim Butcher officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
