Jack Merwin Waldeck

Mr. Jack Merwin Waldeck, 77, of Huntington died Monday, December 22, 2003, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Henson Mortuary with the Rev. Sue Jarrett officiating. He was a retired Salesman. He was born in Huntington, a son of the late Jack and Ivy Hodges Waldeck. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Doss Waldeck. Mr. Waldeck was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II; was a member of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, the Audubon Society and the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society. He is survived by a brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Doss, Ruth Hanley of Merritt Island, Fla., and Emma Margaret Choquette of Adams, Mass.; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Suzanne Jones.

Fletcher I. Walls

Fletcher I. Walls, 66 of Johnson City, Tenn., formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., passed. away on Tuesday, December 23, 2003, in Johnson City, Tenn. He was born October 14, 1937, in Earling, W.Va., to Helen Walls of Johnson City, Tenn., and the late Ralph Walls. Mr. Walls graduated from Huntington East High School and attended Marshall University. He was employed as general sales manager for Eagle International Carbide, Statesville, N.C. He is survived by his wife, Sandra J. Walls; his mother, Helen Walls; daughter Julia Walters and her husband Ben of Asheville, N.C.; son, Robert Walls and his wife Letha of Upland, Calif.; son Edward Walls and his wife Belinda of Gray, Tenn.; son Anthony Walls of Kingsport, Tenn.; he had three grandchildren, Zachary Walters, Carson Walls and Marinda Walls; two sisters, Nancy Hunyadi and her husband Matt; a niece, Erzsebet Hunyadi; and Kara Bluntach of Yorba Linda, Calif.; he is also survived by his brother-in-law, Don Ballengee, wife Krystal, and two nephews, Scott and Troy Ballengee. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville. His uncle, Jake Clark, performed services. Pallbearers were Jeff Clark, Brian Clark, Dickie Hinchman, Kevin Hinchman, Sid Hinchman, and Jim Cunningham. Honorary pallbearers were Don Ballengee, Charles Hensley, Frank Walls, Charles Walls, and Dennis Walls, and Keith Hoffnagle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Fletcher Walls to the American Cancer Society at (800)-227-2345 or Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, 773 Brethren Church Road, Jonesborough, TN 27659. Memorial services for friends in Tennessee will be planned for a later date.

Theresa G. Napoleon

Theresa G. Larkins Napoleon, 87, of Scott Depot, formerly of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, died Friday, December 19, 2003, at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law.

She was a homemaker and attended Ascension Catholic Church, Hurricane. She loved to garden.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Napoleon.

Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Joan Larkins of Scott Depot; daughter, Shirley Podpora of Davisburg, Michigan; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at Divine Child Catholic Church, Dearborn Heights. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, Michigan. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Stella Milhorn Withrow

Stella Milhorn Withrow, 87, of Black Betsy died Friday, December 19, 2003, at Patty's House of Care, Hometown, following a long illness.

She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Eleanor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Withrow, her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Charlie Stone of Logan, 10 brothers and sisters, one stepdaughter, Grace Lewis, and a stepson, Chester Withrow.

Surviving: stepson and caregiver, Fred Milhorn and his wife, Willie of Eleanor; stepsons, Johnny Mac Milhorn of Bancroft and Eddie Withrow of Poca; stepdaughters, Marie Shamblin of Raymond City and Geraldine Breeden of Florida; several step-grandchildren; special niece, Doris “Bill” Brown of Midway, several other nieces and nephews.

Service was held Monday, December 22, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor David Panaro Jr. officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Mausoleum, Red House.

Pauline D. Coffman

Pauline D. Coffman, 82, of Winfield died December 19, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.

She was a homemaker and bookkeeper, and a member of Winfield Church of the Nazarene and the Putnam County Homemakers Club. She was a published poet, a gardener, and an excellent craftsman. She was valedictorian of her high school class from Nuttall High School, and a 40-year resident of Putnam County.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Ira And Mary Zealie Davis, sisters, Irene Wood and Imogene Davis, and brother, Eugene Davis.

Surviving: husband, William C. Coffman; daughter and son-in-law, Geneva Lynne and Wayne Iverson; son and daughter-in-law, William C. and Terri Coffman; sisters, Helen Davis and Mabel Bennett of Rainelle, and Katherine Bennett of Cincinnati; grandchildren, Kristin Kerlin of South Carolina and Teri Davis of Culloden; great-grandchildren, Trenton Davis and Gavin Davis.

Service was held Monday, December 22, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. John Hayes officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Hustion Foster

Hustion Foster, 86, of Teays Valley Road, Hurricane, died December 18, 2003.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Vinton and Ethel Burdett Foster, sisters, Ocie Marie Harper and Mabel Slater, and brothers, Lovell and William C. Foster.

He grew up on Four Mile, Coopers Creek, Kanawha County, working on the farm until his parents moved to Cross Lanes. In the 1930s, he worked for United Fuel Gas, Standard Brick Company and Fletcher Enamel. From 1942 to 1947 he worked from Dunbar Flint Glass and from 1947 to 1964 fro Gravely Tractor, Dunbar. He also worked for Dunbar Printing and Shaw Manufacturing, Nitro. He retired in 1982 from Kanawha County schools as head custodian at Dunbar High School and Ben Franklin Vocation School with 12 years' service.

Surviving: his wife of 61 years, Erma Ruth Foster; daughter, Darlene D. Foster at home; son and his wife, Dale A. and Sharon A. Ranson Foster of Cross Lanes; grandson, Jeremy Foster at Marshall University and his fiancee, Alex Govea; sisters, Virginia Boyd, Bessie Cavender and Roxie Elizabeth Lacy, all of Cross Lanes; brothers, Ohmera “Red” Foster of Palm Bay, Florida; many nephews and nieces.

Service was held Sunday, December 21, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley and the Rev. Billy Lanham officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.

Cecil C. Honaker Jr.

Cecil C. Honaker Jr., 67, of Red House died December 18, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.

He was a former mechanic for R.H. Peters Chevrolet and Honaker's Garage. He was a member of Hometown Senior Citizens and the Lions Club and was a Christian.

Surviving: children, Stephanie Stubblefield and Chris Honaker; special nephew, Gary Beller and wife, Carolyn, of Red House; sister-in-law, Annetta Honaker of Eleanor; nieces, Debbie Ross of Teays Valley and Teresa Honaker of Eleanor.

Service was held Monday, December 22, 2003, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Willard Beller officiating. Entombment followed in the mausoleum. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Adron McClanahan

Adron “Dudder” McClanahan, 79, of Poca died December 21, 2003, at home.

He was a retired coal miner.

Surviving: his wife of 56 years, Virginia Eloise McClanahan; children, Paul W. Wines of Ravenswood, Keith L. McClanahan of Poca, Patricia McClanahan of Cross Lanes, Robert McClanahan of Poca, Kerry McClanahan of Poca, Shelby McClanahan of Ravenswood, and Tina Hammonds of Ravenswood; brother, Dale McClanahan of Dunbar; sisters, Argatha Parsons of Kelleys Creek, Meritta Burdette of Dunbar, Nora Harrah of Kelleys Creek, and Loretta Huggart of Charleston; 22 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Service was held Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Cletus Price officiating. Burial was in Goff-McClanahan Cemetery, Charleston.

Gladys C. Booth

Mrs. Gladys C. “Granny Pit” Booth, 92, of Hometown died December 21, 2003, in Country Villa Care, Buffalo.

She was a retired Putnam County educator and very active in church and civic activities.

Surviving: children and their spouses, Bobbie and Warren, Monna and Roger, Bill and Phil and Pooch and Nook; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Service was private and entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Patrick Thomas Gatens

Patrick Thomas Gatens, 78, of Charleston died Sunday, December 21, 2003, following a short illness.

He was born July 24, 1925 in Bancroft to the late Cornelius and Dillie Agnes Dewees Gatens. He was a retired grocery story owner, a veteran and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Kanawha City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby V. Jackson Gatens; stepson, William E. Jackson; brothers, Cornelius, William, Arthur, Leo (a war casualty), and Bernard; sisters, Ruth Whitman, Grace McSurley, Theresa Kilcore, Agens Cambrell, and Joan Fridley.

Surviving: stepdaughters, Anna M. Siders and Agnes F. Morton; stepsons, Jerry, Teddie and Eddie Jackson, all of Charleston, donald L. Jackson of Fort Worth, Texas , and Jimmie W. Jackson of LaPorte, Indiana; brothers, Maurice S. of Charleston and John T. Jackson of Blackfoot, Idaho; sisters, Barbara Norton of Charlton, Massachusetts and Kathleen Middleton of Tucson, Arizona; 19 stepgrandchildren; 31 stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-granddaughter.

Service was held Friday, December 26, 2003 at At. Agnes Catholic Church with Father John McDonnell officiating. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Edward Meadows

Paul Edward Meadows, 91, of Milton, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2003, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday, December 26, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born August 30, 1912, in Putnam County, West Virginia, a son of the late Ezra and Alice Leadmon Meadows. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ivy F. Meadows. Mr. Meadows was retired from INCO and a member of Union Baptist Church, Milton. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Boyd and Betty Meadows of Milton; three grandchildren, Beth Williamson and her husband Anthony, Bruce Meadows and Buffy Meadows; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Meadows and Clint Williamson, all of Milton.
