Genevieve M. Guinn

Mrs. Genevieve M. Guinn, 85, of Huntington, widow of Yule T. Guinn, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, in Mariner Health Care Center. She was born Feb. 25, 1918, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Walter Patrick and Kate Simpson Miller. She attended St. Joseph High School and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She worked in sales at Sears Department Store. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia McComas; brother, Leon Miller; sisters, Catherine “Cacky” MacPherson, Rita Alexander, Marie Brooks and Teresa Miller. Survivors include her son-in-law, Homer McComas of Huntington; four grandchildren, Mike, Mark and Matt McComas, all of Barboursville, and Betsy Brotherton of Milton; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Irene Miller of Barboursville; brother-in-law, Kenneth Owen of Portsmouth, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Betty Miller of Charleston, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 21, at Henson Mortuary by her nephew, the Rev. Father Leon Alexander; burial in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington.

Lillith Edley “Eddie” Peyton

Lillith Edley “Eddie” Peyton, 60, of formerly of Barboursville, went to be with the Lord Monday, February 16, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, February 19, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Richard Black. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born July 18, 1943, in Cabell County, a son of the late Edley and Millie Farley Peyton. He was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict serving in the U.S. Army and was a member of American Legion Post 16. He is survived by his life time companion, Lou Ann Reed and her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; two close cousins, Sue McCallister and Becky Simpson and their family, and one aunt, Inez Gardner of Lufkin, Texas .

Rev. John Warren Bell

Rev. John Warren Bell, 51, of India went to be with the Lord Feb. 5, 2004. He was preceded in death by his loving grandparents, Elma and John Bell, Beulah and W. Warren Wallace, step grandmother, Avis Wallace, great-grandparents, Maude and Claude Bell, Charles Baumgardner and a fond cousin, Dana Griffith. He is survived by his wife, Jessy Bell and daughter, Teresa Bell of India; his mother, Anita Wood and step father Robert Wood of Talbott, TN; his loving daughter, Elizabeth Bell Schweppe, her husband, John Schweppe, and dear grandson, Daniel Thomas Schweppe. Also survivied by his loving sister, Claudia Booth, her husband, Mike Booth; his dear nephews, Michael and Adam Booth of Sellersburg, IN. He is also survived by his father, James K. Bell of Texas . Other survivors include his step brother, Bob Wood III, his wife Carol Wood; step sister, Karen Wood Ward and her husband, Ken Ward, Jenny Flo Branson of Talbott and Morristown, TN., Linda and Todd Seay of Saulsburg, NC and Mary Jane Meadows of Wisconsin; a dear grandmother, Phyllis Salmon Hall of Milton, WV. John was a graduate of Milton High School, Milton, WV, Randolph-Macon College, Ashland VA and received a Masters of Divinity Degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA. He was doing work on his PHD. John had two special friends, Rev. David Easter of Parkersburg, WV and Michael Carpenter, attorney in Columbus, OH. Also friend Joyce Perry Winkler of Milton, WV. He is survived by a dear aunt, Joe Ann Swathwood of Barboursville, WV and a cousin, Joe Ellen Boback of Pittsburgh, PH. Also a great aunt, Hallie Starkey of Martinsburg, WV. John had a host of friends all over the world.

He gave his possessions to the homeless, the poor and the needy. It was his prayer that all Christians all over the world would also to stamp out poverty. He was entombed in India. There will be a Memorial Service in Milton, WV at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Teresa Bell of India and Elizabeth Schweppe of Raleigh, NC.

Ruth Lea Carey Harshbarger Detwiler

Ruth Lea Carey Harshbarger Detwiler, 96, of West Liberty, OH, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2004 in Mercy Hospital in Urbana, OH. She was born March 10, 1907, in Logan, WV, a daughter of the late John and Edna McNeeley Carey. She is preceded in death by her first husband, David Mark Harshbarger; a son John C. Harshbarger; a daughter Catherine Barton; two brothers, two sisters, and 2 grandchildren. She was a homemaker and a member of Milton United Methodist Church, Milton, WV; attended Grace Chapel Church in West Liberty and member of West Liberty Garden Club. She is survived by her husband Howard Detwiler; daughter, Betty Brandt and her husband Jack of West Liberty, OH; step sons, Allen Detwiler and his wife Phyllis of Columbus, OH, and Fred Detwiler and his wife Phyllis of Maumee, OH; daughter-in-law, Hilda Harshbarger of Indianapolis, IN; half brothers, Roy and Ray Carey of Cleveland, OH; half sister, Mary Barton of Cleveland, OH; seven grandchildren; many great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; three step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted February 21, 2004 at Milton United Methodist Church, Milton, WV, with Pastor Bradley Brandt officiating. Burial in White Chapel Cemetery, Barboursville. Kauffman-Eichholtz Funeral Home, West Liberty, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Milton United Methodist Church or Wheelersburg Baptist Church.

Melvin Thompson

Melvin Thompson, 64, of Barboursville, son of Ethel Williams of Crum, died Sunday, February 15, 2004 in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Webb Community Church; burial in Thompson Cemetery, Fort Gay. Young Funeral Home, Louisa, Ky, was in charge of arrangements.

Boyd Pertee

Boyd Pertee, 71, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Sunday, February 15, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home by Minister Amos Prince. Burial in Docks Creek Cemetery, Kenova. He was born July 10, 1932 in Crum, W.Va. a son of the late Tom and Naomi Brumfield Pertee. He was a retired painter and a member of Ceredo Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jamie Pertee, in 1984; two sisters, Mary Etta Dalton and Betty Copley; two brothers, Terry Pertee and Everett Pertee. Survivors include one sister, Carrie Maynard of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, Roy Pertee of Vacaville Calif., Troy Pertee of Sterling, Ohio, and Willis Pertee of Barboursville, W.Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Freeda Mae Bledsoe Dailey

Freeda Mae Bledsoe Dailey , 74, of Garfield Heights, Ohio, widow of Willie “Pooch”” Dailey, entered into rest Feb. 20, 2004. Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. David A. Vickers and Deacon Robert Keaton officiating. Burial in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock She was born June 30, 1929, in Milton a daughter of the late Lewis and Macel Bragg Bledsoe. She was the loving mother of Connie Ambrose (Terry) of New York, Ronnie Dailey, Tamera Saraney (Graner), Terri Datko (Steve) and Anessia Dailey (Doug), all of Cleveland. She was the grandmother of 11, great-grandmother of two and dear sister of Kathleen Ashworth. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

William Herbert Sweet

William Herbert Sweet, of Huntington, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born April 24,1911, in Bayonne, N.J., a son of the late William John and Viola Mae Anson Sweet. He graduated from Lafayette College, Easton, Pa., with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was president of his graduating class; active in athletics, where he was recognized for his play; and a member of Bates Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was retired from Management at Inco. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Eleanor Carlyn Everett Sweet; three daughters, Carol Bartlett Of Tuscon Ariz., Lois Beuttel of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Janet Linville of Berea, Ky.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services are to be held at a later date in Locust Hill Cemetery, Wharton N.J. There was no visitation. Family condolences may be sent at www.timeformemory.com/henson. Henson Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Louise Morrison

Evelyn Louise Morrison, 87, of Milton passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in Morris Memorial Nursing Home, Milton Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Pastor Mark Finley officiating. Burial in Balls Gap Cemetery. She was born July 9, 1916, in Milton, W.Va, a daughter of the late Claude E. and Amanda S. Hall Perry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Everett R. Morrison; son Mack Alien Morrison; and grandson, Steven Allen White . Mrs. Morrison retired from St. Mary's Medical Center, where she worked as a licensed practical nurse for 25 years. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Wesol (Chris) of Milton; sister, Mary Alyce Johnson of Milton; daughter-in-law, Anna Jewel Beardin of Rochelle, Ill; grandchildren Stacy Miles (Don) of Casper, Wyo, Rodney Kent White (Cheryl) of Milton, Jamar Morrison (Kelly) of Danielsville, Ga., Paul Allen Morrison (Korenne) of Milton, Karla Morrison Tinebra (Joseph) of Hagerstown, Md., Kandi Morrison Hickman (Cris) of Milton and Trena Walters-Penney of Kentucky; and great-grandchildren, Nicole Bjerknes, Collin and Mason White , Jeffrey Morrison, Haley and Josie Tinebra, Rachel Lakes, Brittany, Cassidy and Jacob Morrison, Tyler and Shelbi Hickman and Candice, Bethany and Chauncey Walters. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Regina Mae King

Regina Mae King, 46, Cleveland, Ohio, passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in the Parma Season of Life Hospice Center, Parma, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Elmwood Baptist.Church by Pastor Rick Glass. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born Oct. 20, 1957, in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of Larry Gene Adams and the late Barbara Jean Spurlock Blankenship. She attended Elmwood Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Roger King; one daughter, Sandra Stephsn of Cleveland; one son, Roger King Jr., of Cleveland; one granddaughter, Barbara Jean Stephens; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Wanda and Earl King of Barboursville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charlotte and Tim Hall, Rick and Valerie King; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Todd and Travis Heaberlin, Daniel Cornell, Ricky King, Tim Hall and Brent Scarberry. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Jean Nicholas

Carolyn Jean Nicholas, 53, of Milton, passed away Feb. 21, 2004, in St Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Caudle Adkins officiating. Burial in Bias Chapel Church Cemetery, where she served her membership. She was born July 29,1950, in Huntington, a daughter of the late James “Jim” William Black. She is survived by her loving mother, Emogene Edmonds Black, and her loving husband, Denver Nicholas, both of Milton. She is also survived by her father-in-law, Richard Nicholas of Proctorville, Ohio. Heck Funeral Heck Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Erman Estle Casto

Erman Estle Casto, 90, of Hometown died February 8, 2004, in Hubbard Hospice House.

He was retired from FMC, former employee of American Viscose, oldest member of Wilkinson United Methodist Church with 56 years of membership, Navy veteran of World War II, member of Hometown and Nitro Senior Citizens, and former member of Hometown Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mary M. Casto.

Surviving: daughters, Shirley Persinger of Hometown and Sue Jividen of Eleanor; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Private services were held at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston WV 25311.

John T. Gribben

John T. “Jack” Gribben, 73, of Hurricane died suddenly at home February 9, 2004.

He was born June 7, 1931 in Wheeling, a son of the late Walter and Nellie Gribben. He was also preceded in death by his son, John, his brother, Walter Jr., and his sister, Helen Marie Gribben.

He was a retired captain with the West Virginia State Police, serving the Shinnston, Turnpike and South Charleston detachments and was currently the municipal judge for Hurricane, Eleanor and Winfield. He was a former Putnam County Magistrate and was a member of the American Association of State Troopers, the West Virginia Troopers Association, West Virginia Chiefs of Police, International Chiefs of Police, St. Albans Fraternal Order of Police No. 88, and the Putnam County Republican Club. He was a member of the Catholic Church of the Ascension, Hurricane, where he served as Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving on the USS Arcadia, and was a member of the American Legion, Department of West Virginia, where was also a past commander and member of the 40/8 Society.

Surviving: wife, Helen Jane Gribben; daughters, Carole Woodyard and husband, Howard, of South Charleston, Julie Raines and husband, John, of Red House, and Karen Gribben of Red House; son, Terry Gribben and wife, Joy, of Cottageville; grandchildren, Brian Oxley and wife, Leslie, of Nitro, Allison Tusing and husband, Courtney, of Hurricane, Shane Woodyard of South Charleston, Jason Raines, Jennifer Raines, Jakob Raines and Joshua Gribben, all of Red House, Brent Gribben of Germany; great-grandchildren, Jennifer Oxley, Noah Tusing and Isaiah Woodyard; sister, Mary Catherine Schlag of Wheeling; brothers, Paul Gribben of Ayr, Massachusetts, Bob Gribben of Christiansburg, Virginia, and Larry Gribben of Triadelphia.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, February 12, 2004, at the Catholic Church of the Ascension with Father Bert Valdes as celebrant. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Stanley Jacob Lyle

Stanley Jacob “Jake” Lyle, 94, of Poca died February 9, 2004.

He had resided in Poca for 22 years with his son's family. He was formerly of Warren, Pennsylvania and Olean, New York. He was retired from Columbia Gas in Warren and Olean with 26 years of service. He was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish and had spent many happy hours at this camp in Scandia, Pennsylvania .

He served during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army Combat Engineers. He was faithful in his attendance at Perrow Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Cross Lanes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leone Fitzgerald Lyle.

Surviving: daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Robert Minor of Grove City, Pennsylvania , Lorraine and David Langham of Lynch, Kentucky; son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Janet Lyle of Poca; grandchildren, Jennifer Oleyar, David Seth and Timothy Lyle, Kyle, Kara and Kent Langham; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jackson Oleyar and Ella Clare Lyle.

Service was held Thursday, February 12, 2004, at Perrow Evangelical Presbyterian Church with Pastor Keith Cobb, Pastor Reid Clark and Pastor Jack Maxwell officiating. Graveside service was held Friday, February 13, 2004, at Warren County Memorial Park, Warren. Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.

The family suggest contributions to the Open Arms Foundation, c/o Perrow Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 5345 Big Tyler Road, Cross Lanes WV 25313.

Juanita Abbott Sovine

Juanita Abbott Sovine, 84 of Culloden, W.Va., passed away Thursday, February 12, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 14, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Rev. T.J. DuBose. Entombment in Valley View Memorial Park. She was born Mach 24, 1919, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Charles and Edith Nimmo Abbott. She was a member of Milton Baptist Church, and she also was active along with her husband operating their family motel, grocery store and service station in Culloden for several years. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Warner H. Sovine; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Sally Sovine of Culloden; two grandchildren and their husbands, Krista and Frank Raines and Kyra and John Minichan; four great-grandchildren, Morgan and Bryce Raines and Perry and Blake Minichan. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Clyde L. Billups

Clyde L. Billups, 92, of Scottsdale, AZ, went home to be with the Lord, Feb. 10, 2004. He was originally from Milton, WV, the son of Lotie and William Billups, deceased. Survivors included his wife Imogene Clenn Billups; sister Freda Wallace of Milton; sons, Bill Billups, Gray, GA, Charles Billups, Ijamsville, MD; daughter, Sue Roberts, Scottsdale, AZ; 8 grandchildren, (one deceased); 11 great-grandchildren; nephew Lloyd Wallace; and niece LaDonna Childers. Services were held on Monday, Feb. 16 at Green Acres Chapel, Scottsdale AZ. In memory, contributions may be made to Heart Line Ministries, 4102 W. Columbine, Phoenix, AZ 85029. Arrangements by Green Acres Mortuary.

Janice Marie Smith

Janice Marie Smith, 63, of Ona, passed away February 9, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born August 15, 1940, a daughter of William B. Mount and the late Dorothy Ellen Clary Mount. She is survived by one son, Brian Smith; one daughter, Monica Wolowinski; one sister, JoAnn Merritt. She is also survived by her fiancÈ Harry Conrad; a special grandchild, Venus Wolowinski; three great-grandchildren and a special niece and nephew. A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.
