Edwin Gail Thacker

Mr. Edwin Gail Thacker, 76, of Barboursville, W.Va., died Monday, January 26, 2004 in St. Mary's Medical Center. Graveside funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at Spring Hill Cemetery by Dr. Terrell Bradley. Edwin was born January 14, 1928, in Lawrence County, Ohio, a son of the late Ernest and Clara Adkins Thacker. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Hutchinson and two brothers, Kermit and Herman Thacker. He retired from the former INCO Alloys and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII. He attended Highlawn Baptist Church and was a member of the VFW Post 9738, whose members conducted military graveside rites. Survivors include his wife, Delores; two daughters, Deborah and (Charles) Cumptan of Chesapeake, Ohio, and Kim Ann and (James) Barbour of Rome Township, Ohio; a son, Gail Eugene and (Sandy) Thacker of Huntington; one brother, William “Bill” and (Maybelle) Thacker of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Nora Adams of Catlettsburg, Ky.; six grandchildren, Wendy Alexander, Susan Devaney, Tara Kinney, Jim Patterson, Ashley and Bethany Barbour; and five great-grandchildren, Chase Thacker, and Nathaniel Patterson, Shae McCoy, Alexis and William Alexander. Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

L. Denver Stratton

L. Denver Stratton, 80, of Milton passed away Monday, January 26, 2004, at his home. Funeral service were conducted Thursday, January 29, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Millard Morrison officiating. Burial in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock. He was born June 4, 1923, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Clarence and Mabel Moore Stratton. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and Dorsey Stratton. He worked at Barboursville Clay Manufacturing Company for 32 years and retired from Blenko Glass after 9-1/2 years. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Free Will Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clodene Johnson Stratton; one son, Larry Stratton; two daughters and sons-in-law; Janet and Don Chapman and Donna and James Harper; three sisters, Marjorie, Anna Ruth and Lorene; three brothers, Melvin, Loren and Merle; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret June Bills

Margaret June Bills, 73, of Huntington went home to be with the Lord Friday, Jan. 23, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. James Gilkerson. Burial in Spring Valley Memory Gardens. She was born Oct. 16, 1930, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Jessie Davis Gill. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John H. Bills and one brother, Hancil C. Gill. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Bills; three sons and their wives, Johnny and Cindy Bills, Roger A. Bills and James and Trina Bills; along with eight grandchildren, David, Amy, Matthew, Noah, Josh, Christy, James and Destanie; four step-grandchildren; one sister, three brothers and their spouses, Myrtle and James Gilkerson, Bobby and Juanita Gill, Howard and Leah Gill and Jim and Helen Gill. Family and friends served as pallbearers. She was a loving mother, grandmother and a good friend to all that knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

Robert Duty

Robert Duty, 79, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Sam Morris officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. He was born Sept. 25, 1924, at Yates Crossing in Milton, a son of the late Esau and Myrtie Smith Duty. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Richardson, Virgie Morris and Ethel Lucas and three brothers, Albert, Marcus and Cephas Duty. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and retired from Connor Steel and the City of Lake Worth, Fla. He is survived by his wife of 56-1/2 years, Ruth Gue Duty; one sister, Catherine Ross of Salt Rock; a host of nieces and nephews; one special nephew, E.J. Duty; and a good friend, Mary Weaver.

Terry Lee Rhodes Jr.

Terry Lee Rhodes Jr. ,23, of Culloden, son of Terry Sr. and Cathy Rhodes of Culloden, died Thursday, January 22, 2004 at home. He worked at T-Shirt International. Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 26, 2004 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley; burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

William Timothy “Tim” Cremeans

William Timothy “Tim” Cremeans, 46, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Thursday, January 22, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 25, 2004 at the Ferrell Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Luther Dingess. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington, W.Va. He was born August 9, 1957, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late William Denver Cremeans. He was a brakeman conductor with CSX Transportation, where he was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers union. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Herman and Mabel Ellis and Clarence and Ruby Cremeans. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Cremeans; his mother, Peggy A. Cremeans and his sister, Karen Cremeans, all of Huntington; two children, Simon Jeffrey and Kelly Ann Cremeans, both of Huntington; two stepchildren, John Alderson Adkins of East Lynn, W.Va., and Ashley Kaye Adkins of Louisa, Ky.; his father and mother-in-law, Jo Marie Brown of Louisa, Ky.; five grandchildren, Johnathan Tyler Adkins, Katelyn Danielle Adkins, Justic Ethan Smith, Nicholas Blake Smith and Simon Jacob Cremeans; three nephews, William Timothy (Wendy) Alexander, Forest Walter Wood and Darin Michael Moore; three nieces, Betty Angelina Alexander, Tina Marie Reed (Eric) Schaner and Roseanne Elizabeth Reed; one uncle, Paul H. Ellis; four great-nephews, Peyton William Reed Schaner, William Eugene Bryany Reed, William Nicholas Alexander and William Denver Cremeans II; two great-nieces, Alexis Alexander and Rosemarie Catalena Rae Schaner, three sisters-in-law, Glenna Marie Reed, Shanie Rae Brown and Jodi Ulschafer;

three brothers-in-law, Michael Lee (Roslyn) Moore, Brian David Moore and Kenny (Nadine) Moore. A host of other loving family and friends also survive.

Gary M. McGraw

Gary M. McGraw, 60, of Milton, formerly of South Point Ohio, passed away Monday, January 26, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital. Graveside services were conducted Thursday, January 29, 2004 in White Chapel Memorial Gardens' Christus Chapel, Barboursville, with the Rev. Tim Halloran officiating. He was born June 6, 1943, in Graydon, W.Va., a son of the late Ira and Amelia Meadows McGraw. Mr. McGraw served in the United States Navy and was employed at Connors Steel and Rubberlite, Inc. He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Sanders McGraw; one daughter and son-in-law, Jenette and David Thompson of Barboursville; grandson Kyle; and three sisters, Helen Crookshanks of Beckley, W.Va., Emogene Shannon of St. Albans, W.Va., and Eugenia Sevy of Hico, W.Va. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Stanley Bartram

Stanley Bartram, 45, of Huntington passed away Sunday, January 25, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 30, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Larry Perry. Burial in Cedar Cliff Cemetery. He was born July 28, 1958, in West Hamlin, a son of Mary E. Adkins Bartram of Huntington and the late Ray Bartram. He is also survived by one sister, Lessie Cathern Conn of Huntington; three brothers, Phillip Wilson Bartram of Bel Air, Md., Gary Bartram and Lewis Bartram both of Huntington; one niece, two nephews; special aunt and uncle, Cynthia and John Gilkerson; and very special friends, Fred, Lana, Shane and Angie, Shawn, Joe, Mendy, Cory, Cody, and Clayton Sharp and Mike Jude.

Bobby Leonard Chapman

Bobby Leonard Chapman, 69, of Milton, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 31, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Joe Dolen officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born July 24, 1934, a son of the late Ralph and Verba Perry Chapman. He was a member of Valley of Decision Church. Bobby retired from the Nickel Plant after 38 years of service. He was a life long member of the Mountaineer Sportsman Gun Club and also belonged to the NRA. Bobby was also a member of the FOP and served on the Milton Police Department. He dedicated many years of his life to the Little League as a coach and chief umpire. He is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert D. and Ann E. Chapman and Darrin C. and Tammy Chapman; one daughter, Bonita Porter; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Johnny E. Chapman and Richard and Jean Smith; two sisters, Louise Vanover and Gladys “Sissy” Bragg; 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

George Edward Justice

George Edward Justice, 87, of Huntington, WV, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2004, at home. Private burial was held Monday, February 2, 2004 in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born October 4, 1916, in Logan, WV, son of the late Everett A. and Molly Victoria Frye Justice of Logan. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Ross in 1997; two brothers, Haskell and Paul; two sisters, Margaret Dyer and Nell Peck. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary; a daughter, Phyllis; a granddaughter, Deb Alley; two brothers, John of Kannapolis, N.C., and Doyle of Huntington; and special friends, Maggie and Molly. He served in the U.S. Navy on the ship USS Bismarck Sea. He retired as a purchasing agent for Logan Supply Co. in 1980. Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Dell B. Scott Jr.

Dell B. Scott Jr., 80, of Scott Depot died Monday, March 8, 2004, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was retired from International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 466, Charleston. He was a member of St. Albans United Pentecostal Church, Dunbar Masonic Lodge and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on submarine duty.

Surviving: wife, Evelyn Scott; daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Hamm Gresham of Scott Depot; son and daughter-in-law, Dell Michael and Helen Scott of Hurricane; grandchildren, Michael, Sydell, Tisa, Jeremy and Joshua; great-grandchildren, Abby, Cody, Chelsey and Calley.

Service was held Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Stephen Neese officiating. Burial was in Tyler mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to St. Albans United Pentecostal Church, 216 Alemeda Street, St. Albans WV 25177.

Wilma L. Erwin

Wilma L. Chapman Erwin, 83, of Hurricane died March 7, 2004, at home following an extended illness.

She was born April 11, 1920 in Hurricane, a daughter of the late John W. Chapman Sr. and Evelyn Wyant Chapman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, E.C. “Blackie” Erwin.

She was a former employee of the City of Hurricane and Hurricane Shoe Store. She was a member of Forrest-Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church and was a lifelong resident of Hurricane.

Surviving: daughter, Deborah L. Smith and her husband, Richard, of Hurricane; granddaughters, Kim Smith and Katie Thaxton, both of Hurricane; great-grandsons, Tyler and John Smith of Hurricane; sister, Connie White and her husband, John, of Scott Depot.

Service was held Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Richard Wilkes officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Patricia R. Broyles

Patricia R. Broyles, 66, of Hurricane died March 9, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital.

She was a homemaker, a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane, a member and past worthy matron of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 116, Hurricane, and also a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 150, Buffalo.

Surviving: husband, Clarence E. Broyles; son, Jeff Broyles of Hurricane; granddaughter, Emmalee Broyles; brother, Carl Midkiff of Radcliff, Kentucky.

Service was held Friday, March 12, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Kregg Burris and the Rev. Lee White officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Debra L. Hall

Debra L. Hall, 47, of Scott Depot died suddenly March 12, 2004, in a vehicle accident.

Born in Ravenna, Ohio on August 27, 1956 and raised in Alliance, Ohio, where she graduated from Marlington High School, she moved to West Virginia shortly following the birth of her first daughter. She was self-employed in real estate development and was a loving mother, grandmother and an avid animal lover.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David E. Butcher and Donna J. Harlan.

Surviving: loved one, Barry Newsome; daughters, Randi R. McDavid of Poca and Terri L. Grigsby of St. Albans, and their husbands; six grandchildren; two dogs, Blue and Tec.

Memorial service was held Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with Pastor Greg Hayes officiating.

Memorial donations may be sent to your local humane society or animal shelter.

Ronda Howard

Ronda Jones Howard, 44, of Charleston died March 12, 2004, surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Poca, she was a graduate of Poca High School and attended West Virginia State College. She was formerly employed as a sales representative for L'Oreal Company, serving also as regional sales representative over a five-state area. She was a former owner and operator of Professional Interiors. She was a Christian and attended Maranatha Fellowship.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Truette Jones.

Surviving: husband, Dr. Edward Howard of Charleston; father, Ronald Jones; sisters and brothers-in-law, Tena and Doug Facemyre and Angie and Eric Sharp; aunts and uncles, Judy and Kenneth Hawley and Kitty and Edward Benson, and beloved niece, Makala Ellen Sharp, all of Poca.

Service was held Monday, March 15, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with Pastor Dan Armstrong officiating. Entombment was in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Lewis D. Craddock

Lewis Dwight Craddock of Poca died March 10, 2004, in the VA Medical Center, Huntington.

Born January 6, 1910, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Hooper Craddock, and his son, Lewis Dwight “Buzzy: Craddock Jr.

He was retired from Union Carbide, Institute. For many years he had been an active member of Poca United Methodist Church. He was a former member of Poca Lions Club and served on the Poca City Council. He was also a member of the VFW as a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a 1935 graduate of Scott High School and attended Concord College and Morris Harvey College.

Surviving: daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Verl Purdy of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jan and David Hudson of Florence, South Carolina, and Deborah and Keith Grant of Winfield; grandchildren, Scott Purdy, Steven Purdy, Susan Purdy Yuhas, Jill Hudson Nguyen, John Hudson, Gretchen Craddock, Julie Craddock Brooks, Jacquelyn Craddock Akers, Josh Grant, Jennifer Grant and Laura Grant; 11 great-grandchildren.

Service was held Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Jonathan Nettles officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 4510-C Pennsylvania Avenue, Charleston WV 25302; or to the American Cancer Society, 301 RHL Blvd., Charleston WV 25309.
