John S. Sargent

John S. Sargent, 66, of Leon, formerly of Alexandria, Virginia, died march 11, 2004, at home following a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Britt and Nora Sargent, and a brother, Jack Sargent.

He was a retired budget analyst from the U.S. Department of Education with 30 years of service, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was a Baptist.

Surviving: brothers and their wives, Charles W. and Lucy Sargent of Albuquerque, New Mexico and James D. and Mary Sargent of Leon.

Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Bernard Merrill Baribeau

Bernard Merrill Baribeau, 87 of Huntington, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. A memorial service was conducted Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, by Pastor Jim Harless and Dr. Robert Walker. “Foozie” retired from Huntington Alloys in 1976 with 43 years of service. An avid hobby enthusiast, Bernard was also a member of the Paw Taw Square Dance Club and the Western Star Lodge #11, A.F. & A.M., and attended Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church. Bernard is survived by his wife, Virginia Dempsey Baribeau; his daughter Jane and her husband William Flowers of Pensacola, Fla., and his daughter Mary and her husband Edward Mahaffey of Watkinsville, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Huntington or to the Salvation Army.

Vernon Ray Lilly

Vernon Ray Lilly, 27, of Huntington, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 13, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Carlos Gibson. Burial in Baylous Cemetery, Salt Rock. He was born February 6, 1977, in Beckley, W.Va., a son of Virgil Lilly of Beckley and the late Nora Maxine Addison Lilly. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Vernon and Susie Lilly. Survivors include his wife, Cassandra Gibson Lilly; two daughters, Tanisha and Brianna Lilly; one brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Kristine Lilly of Indiana; his stepmother, Teresa Lilly; two stepsisters, Alisha Dunn and Katrina Moore of Beckley; two sisters-in-law, Candace Gibson and Michelle LeGrand, both of Kenova; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mike and Kathy Gibson of Huntington; stepgrandparents, Kenneth and Barbara Meadows, of Mabscott; several nieces and nephews. He leaves behind many special family members and friends.

Regena Kay Napier

Regena Kay Napier, 50, of Salt Rock, W.Va., went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 7, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Harry Moore and Pastor Pete Scheer. Burial in Enon Cemetery. She was a member of Enon Missionary Baptist Church since May of 1976. She was born February 19, 1954, in Lincoln County, a daughter of Nando Jr. and Jeweldine Bledsoe Johnson of Milton. Also surviving are four sisters and brothers-in-law, Darlene and Eugene Finley of Milton and Irma and Tom Lovejoy of Hamlin, Tamra and Paul Browning of Hamlin and Adina and James Caldwell of Salt Rock; she is also survived by 12 very special nieces and nephews whom she cared for like her own, Laundell Finley, Latisha Holmes, Lawanna Adkins, Tessa Cooper and her children, MacKenzie and Gavin, LeeAnn Bills, Keith Browning and his daughter Josie, Justin Browning, Alexis and Chelsea Caldwell. She will be sadly missed by all her friends and family. Regena touched the lives of many and will always be remembered as the one who never let her physical or emotional struggles stand in the way of helping others when she didn't feel like it herself. She now resides in Heaven and would only want us to remember the good memories she left behind.

Mary F. Vance

Mary F. Vance, 78, of Milton died Sunday, March 8, 2004 in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Anna M. Dailey

Anna M. Dailey, 93, formerly of Milton, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at the residence of her daughter in Jackson, Ohio. Graveside services were held Thursday, March 11, 2004, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Barboursville, with the Rev. Larry Woody officiating. She was born April 20, 1910, in Mason County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Claude and Dorcas Holley Blake. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Boyd Dailey. She is survived by one daughter, Ava Jean McNece of Jackson; Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles V. and Jo Dailey of Milton; two sisters, Verba Conard of Huntington and Selma Black of Milton; one brother, Charles “Denny” Blake of Milton; six grandchildren, Robert A. Keyser, Roy E. Keyser, Tony A. Keyser, Cindy Azbell, Tawnya D. Dailey and Kellie D. Spencer, and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holzer Hospice, 190 Water Street, Jackson, OH 45640. Heck Funeral Home, Milton was in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Charles Grose

Samuel Charles Grose, 61, of Huntington. passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 11, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, by the Rev. Jim McGehee with Pastor Ronald Eplin assisting. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born July 16, 1942 in Mifflintown, Pa., a son of the late Samuel Grose. He was a retired U.S. Air Force officer and president of Metro College in Albuquerque, N.M. He also worked several years as financial aid director for Philips College. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hurricane and he loved to cook and garden. He is survived by his wife Christina Eplin Grose; one son, Samuel T. Grose; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Michael Musick, all of Bixby, Okla.; two stepsons, William Beaver of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Mark Beaver of Huntington; six grandchildren, Cody and Megan Musick, Samantha Wright, Katie, Amanda and Emilie Beaver, his family in West Virginia, Eugene and JoAnn Stephenson, Chris and Helen Watts, Buddy and Janis Eplin, Ronald and Dottie Eplin, Morris and Bobbie Eplin, Keith and Shauna Eplin, Gary and Barb Carico. Sam's humor and caring heart will be sadly missed by his family and friends forever.

Herman Darrell Hatfield

Mr. Herman Darrell Hatfield, 90, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Monday, March 8, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Henson Mortuary by Dr. Ed Grant. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. VFW Post 9738 Guyandotte conducted graveside rites. Mr. Hatfield was born September 9, 1913, in Ranger, W.Va., son of the late T.B. Hatfield and Dora Elizabeth Hatfield. He was owner and operator of the former Hatfield Upholstery and a member of the Paw Taw square Dance Club. Mr. Hatfield was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and recipient of a Purple Heart. Surviving are his wife, Jean Zimmerman Hatfield; sons Sam Zimmerman of Wilmington, N.C., and Philip and his wife Linda of Barboursville; five grandchildren, Aaron Zimmerman of New York, Amy Z. Pemberton of Proctorville, Ohio, Gabriel Zimmerman, serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq, Zachary Zimmerman of Fort Campbell, Ky, and Andrea Zimmerman of Barboursville; “his favorite sister-in-law,” Vivian Vinton of Barboursville; and a brother, Charles Ferguson of Garden City, Mich.

Orlando Hartman

Orlando Hartman, 88, of Scott Depot died March 2, 2004, at SunBridge of Putnam after a long illness.

He was born Jun 15, 1915 in Franklin, West Virginia, a son of the late Henry Albert and Minnie Mae Moyers Hartman. He was also preceded in death by his wives, Reba Gladys Fowler Hartman and Evelyn Belle Sanson Hartman, to whom he was married 25 years each, and his sister, Alda Lorena.

At 19 years of age, Orlando went into the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in Nicholas and Randolph counties. He graduated from the National Youth Administration Trade School after only three years and served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II, attached to the amphibious force. While enlisted, he served in Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

He was retired from Union Carbide, South Charleston plant, with 36 years of service and served on the company fire squad. He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane, since 1947, was a 50-year member of the Putnam Masonic Lodge No. 139 AF & AM, Hurricane, served 18 years on the Board of Trustees of Mount Vernon Cemetery, and helped to start the Teays Valley Volunteer Fire Department. He attended the John D. Henson Senior Center, Hurricane. He enjoyed traveling, his family and watching football. He was an avid Marshall University fan.

Surviving: daughters, Cheryl Lynn Null of Winfield and Deborah Kay Hanna of Scott Depot; stepdaughters, Sherrie Sue Sanson Hutchinson of Tampa, Florida and Diana Lou Sanson Sharp of St. Albans; grandchildren, Gregory Lynn Null, Brian Anthony Null, Kristopher Ryan Hanna and Rachel Whitney Hanna; great-grandchildren Madison Hanley, Amber Michelle, Kristen Nichole and Dustin Keith; step-grandchildren, Scott Sharp, John Hutchinson and Mark Hutchinson; step-great-grandson, Tyler Sharp; brother, Woodrow Hartman of Franklin; sister-in-law, Corba Fowler of Urbana, Illinois.

Service was held Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee White and Dr. Kregg L. Burris officiating. Burial with Masonic rites by Putnam Lodge No. 139, AF & Am, was in Mount Vernon Cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Charles A. Burton

Charles A. Burton, 77, of Scott Depot died February 29, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital.

He was born January 10, 1927 in Hamlin, a son of the late Frank and Dolcie Issac Burton. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Paul Burton and Billy Burton.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving during World War II, and a 50-year member of Hamlin Masonic Lodge No. 79 AF & AM.

Surviving: wife, Jean Day; stepson, John Day of Delaware, Ohio; stepdaughter, Pamela Kim of Corpus Christi, Texas ; sisters, Eileen McComas of Midkiff, Shelia Cobb of Scott Depot and Sharon Martin of Charleston; three step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Service was held Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Powhatan Cemetery, Powhatan Point, Ohio. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Bruce B. Craig

Bruce B. Craig, 72, of Buffalo died Sunday, February 29, 2004, at home following a short illness.

He was a 15-year owner/operator of Craig's Grocery, Buffalo, a retired deckhand for AEP Transportation, a lifelong resident of Buffalo, and attended the New Hope Tabernacle, Robertsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Ernie Hayes Craig.

Surviving: his wife of 52 years, Esta Mae Priddy Craig; daughter, Loretta Mae Craig Davis and her husband, Jack, of Buffalo; son, Donnie Lee Craig os Cross Lanes; granddaughters, Christina Faye Craig Young of Winfield, Michelle Dawn Craig Johnson of Sissonville, and Makailah Nichole Davis of Buffalo; great-granddaughters, Morgan and Megan Young, both of Buffalo.

Service was held Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Raynes Funeral home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Jasper Herdman and the Rev. Wayne Burch officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Yvonne G. Dunaway

Yvonne G. Dunaway, 57, of Milton died March 4, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a long illness.

Surviving: daughters, Sherry Ramsey of Milton, Angela Edwards of Fraziers Bottom, and Rachel Edwards of Buffalo; brother, Jarrell Mynes of Kentucky; sisters, Mamie Edwards and Juanita Mynes, both of Hurricane; five grandchildren.

Service was held Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Allen Funeral home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Lyle McMicken officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Huntington.

Daniel Owens

Daniel Owens, 69, of Poca died March 3, 2004, in CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was a former 10-year resident of Nitro, a graduate of Concord College, was currently employed by the Lively Insurance Agency where he worked as a bond agent, and was retired from Westfield Companies Insurance. He attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Nitro, and was an Army veteran and an avid golfer.

Surviving: wife, Allyson Hodges Owens of Poca; sons, Dr. Jack D. Owens of Jackson, Mississippi and Daniel G. Owens Jr. of San Diego, California; daughter, Stephanie George of Macon, Georgia; grandchildren, Caroline, Madeline and John Owens, Sam Owens and Percy George; sister, Helen Wise of Marietta, Georgia; stepchildren, Alexandra Criner of Nitro and Katie Lilly of Cross Lanes.

Service was held Saturday, March 6, 2004, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom McDowell officiating. Interment was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd H. Tucker Sr.

Lloyd Houston “Pug” Tucker Sr., 71, of Jacobsburg, Ohio, formerly of Hometown, died March 4, 2004, in Wheeling.

He was born February 26, 1933 in Hometown, a son of the late James Arthur and Eva Bailey Tucker. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Margaret Bailey Tucker, sisters, Annabelle Carney and Violet Bailey, and grandson, Micah Shawn Tucker.

He was a retired coal miner from North American Coal Company's Number 3 Mine and a member of Church Alive, Key, Ohio.

Surviving: wife, Norma Jean Palmer McGill Tucker; sons, Rickie Lee Tucker and Lloyd Tucker Jr., both of Jacobsburg; daughter, Charlotte Ann Evans of Shadyside, Ohio; stepdaughters, Andrea Elaine McGill of Powhatan Point, Ohio, and Kimberly Sue Tucker of Jacobsburg; sister, Genevieve Landers of Bancroft; brothers, Eldon Tucker of Bancroft and Gerald Tucker of Indiana; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Service was held Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Toothman Funeral Home, Jacobsburg, with Pastor Jeff Lewis officiating. Graveside service was held Monday, March 8,, 2004, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.
