Roscoe Clark

Roscoe Clark, 85, of Huntington passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 16, 2004, at the Wallace Home & Chapel by Rev. Craig Coster. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. He was born June 1, 1918, in Lincoln County, a son of the late Noah and Tilda Clark. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lelia Ledford Clark; three sons, Billy Joe Clark, Jimmy Dale Clark, and Michael Allen Clark, all of Huntington; one sister, Vangeline Clay of Laredo, W.Va.; one brother, Sesco Clark of Barboursville; two special granddaughters whom he raised, Stacy and Carl Clark; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Jake Merritt

Jake Merritt, 81, of Lesage, W.Va., passed away Monday, April 12, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Bob Hale officiating. Burial in Greenbottom Memorial Park. He was born March 4, 1923, in Cabell County, W.Va., a son of the late Harry and Carrie Jeffers Merritt. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Dale Merritt; his first wife, Doris Nottingtham Merritt; and two brothers, Casey Merritt and Asie Merritt. He worked as a greens keeper at Riviera Country Club. Survivors include his wife, Connie Dolin Merritt; three daughters and a son-in-law, Carrie Merritt at home, Doris and Mike Dolin of Glenwood, W.Va., and Melissa Arnold of Huntington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Vickie Merritt of Huntington and Roger and Phyllis Merritt of Barboursville, W.Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Junior and Annetta Merritt of Lesage; six grandchildren, Timmy Merritt, Cathy Moffett, Joanna Merritt, Vanessa Hale, Owen Arnold, and Bobby Caldwell; seven great-grandchildren; and a stepgrandson, Derrick Adams.

Mona Lea “Peg” Carson

Mona Lea “Peg” Carson, 77, of Glenwood, widow of Herbert William “Bill” Carson, died Monday, April 12, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a short illness. Funeral service were conducted Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Lee Kendrick officiating. Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery, Glenwood. She was retired from Green Acres Regional Center. She was a lifelong member of Sunrise United Methodist Church. She was born Feb. 1, 1927, in Cabell County W.Va., a daughter of the late Arbie and Lillian Bryan Gebhardt. She is survived by three daughters, Dawn Delene Price and husband, Wally of Huntington, Aynessa Taylor and husband, Jim of Winfield, W.Va., and Ms. Lyndall “Lynn” Carson Lowry of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandsons, Jeremy Foster and wife, Kristi of Bossier City, La., and Chris Wooten and wife, Laureen of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four great-grandchildren, Kyle and Ethan Foster and Cole and Olivia Wooten; and two very special and dear people in her life, Doris and Mike Dolin. She loved her neighbors and community, spent most of her life sewing, quilting and dairy farming; and watching and feeding the wild animals and birds that came to her back porch daily. She loved her children and family without question or reserve - as her children loved her.

Thurman L. Harshbarger Sr.

Thurman L. Harshbarger Sr., 82, of Ironton, Ohio, passed away Monday, April 12, 2004. The Logan, WV native, was born June 3, 1921, the son of the late Homer Harshbarger & Nellie Nicholas Harshbarger. Mr. Harshbarger was a retired engineer for C&O Railroad, and attended Milton, WV schools and lived in Lawrence County, Ohio since 1943. He is survived by his wife, Geneva Pauline Johnson Harshbarger, whom he married in 1956. He is also survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, T.L. Harshbarger Jr. of Ironton, Ohio, Homer Benton Harshbarger of Carthage, Tx., and Jackie Lee & Beverly Harshbarger of Sarasota, Florida; one step-son, Michael and his wife, Dora Willis of Richmond, Ky.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pamela S. & David Lambert of Ironton, OH, Paula Louise Harshbarger of Boyton Beach, Fla., Carol Ann & Jim Thompson of Burlington, Ohio; a brother, Billy Harshbarger of Redkey, Ind.; a sister, Edna Morrison of Wilmington, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Imogene Sandstone and a brother, Homer Harshbarger. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 15, 2004 at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, Ohio, with Rev. Glen Carmon officiating. Burial in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point, Ohio. Ruth Evelyn Meadows

Ruth Evelyn Meadows, 92, of Hurricane died April 4, 2004.

She was born near Scottown, Ohio and in 1927 moved to Huntington. After her marriage to Delmer, she was a resident of Putnam County.

She retired from the Putnam County Board of Education and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmer B. Meadows, and parents, Frank and Gilla Dillon.

Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Franklin B. and Jean Meadows of Hurricane; grandsons, David F. and Evonna Meadows of Culloden, and Richard and Patti Meadows of Hurricane; great-granddaughters, Amy, Casey and Andrea; stepgreat-granddaughter, Andrea Thomas; special nephews, Donzie Leadman of Hurricane and Ray Burcham of Huntington; caregivers, Irene Moss and Ruby Parsons.

Service was held at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Cemetery, Barboursville.

Helen L. Hodges

Helen L. Hodges, 80, of Hurricane died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at home.

She was born August 27, 1923 in Putnam County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hodges, daughter, Betty Jackson, brothers, Lonnie Erwin, Gordon Erwin, Elvin Erwin, Robert Erwin, A.H. “Bud” Erwin, Dorsal “Red” Erwin, Carl Erwin, and Chalmer Erwin, and infant sisters, Wanda Erwin and Lorie Erwin.

She was a member of the Church of God in Hurricane.

Surviving: son, Billy Hodges and daughter-in-law, Susie, of Winfield; daughter, Juanita Howard and son-in-law, Donald, of South Point, Ohio; sisters, Shirley Conrad of Hurricane and Eunice Sovine of Milton; sisters-in-law, Carol Erwin of Winfield and Melvie Erwin of St. Albans; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and caregiver, Kay Gibson.

Service was held Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice.

Hubert Raymond Galford

Hubert Raymond Galford, 75, of Hurricane died April 5, 2004, after a short illness.

He was born on Back Mountain, Pocahontas County, June 27, 1928. His parents, Roscoe Lee Galford and Carrie Sutton Galford, preceded him in death.

He graduated from Marlinton High School in 1946. He served in the Army of Occupation in Korea, where he attained the rank of sergeant. On his return from Korea, he attended Davis and Elkins College, graduating with a B.S. degree.

He was employed by the West Virginia Child Welfare Division before returning to school at the Medical College of Virginia, graduating with a Certificate of Physical Therapy. He was employed at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fisherville, Virginia, as supervisor of clinical education, and established the Physical Therapy Department at the West Virginia Rehabilitation Center. For 30 years, he was chief of the Physical Therapy Department at WVRC, where he served thousands of disabled West Virginians with dedication and respect. He then worked for Americare Corp. at their Teays Valley and Dunbar facilities. Over his career, he was appointed adjunct instructor for clinical instruction in rehabilitation at MCV's School of Physical Therapy, Duke University, Florida State University, the University of Kentucky, Ohio State University, West Virginia University, and Loma Linda University in California.

He attended the Catholic Church of the Ascension in Hurricane.

Surviving: wife, Maria; son, Hugh Scott of Washington , D.C.

Memorial service was held Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Father Neil Buchlein officiating. His remains will be returned to his beloved Pocahontas County.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice Care, Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Denzil Francis Hess

Denzil Francis Hess, 81, of Scott Depot died April 6, 2004, at Broadmore Assisted Living, Hurricane.

Born May 19, 1922 in Sistersville, he was a son of the late Raymond Landis and Garnet Broughman Hess. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bill Hess.

He was a retired mechanical engineer from Monsanto Corp., Nitro, with 17 years of service and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot. He was a Boy Scout leader for more than 20 years and was a former councilman for the City of Vienna.

Surviving: his wife of 63 years, Ruth Smales Hess; daughter, Ruth Frances Malson and her huysband, Gene; his sons, Ronald Hess and hiw wife, Janet, Larry Hess and his wife, Susan; sisters, Merle Reed and Helen Hess Bolen; brothers, Harold Jennings Hess and Carl Hess; grandchildren, James Denzil Malson, Whitney Hess Brown, Daniel and David Hess; great-grandchildren, Denzil Edward Malson, Tiffany and Britany Brown and Kaylee Hess.

Service was held Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Martin B. Hallett officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 301 RHL Blvd., Charleston WV 25309.

Virginia L. Thacker

Virginia L. “Granny” Thacker, 82, of Hurricane died April 6, 2004, at Clark's Personal Care Home, Milton, after a long illness.

She was born August 14, 1921 in South Charleston, a daughter of the late Okey and Lora Barton Parsons. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer Thacker, one sister and two brothers.

Granny, as she was known and loved, was a member of the Rehobath Baptist Church, St. Albans, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 79, St. Albans.

Surviving: daughters, Sandra Crider and Pat Thacker, both of Hurricane; sisters, Viola Self of West End, Michigan and Betty Gibson of Jupiter, Florida; brother, Donald Parsons of Scott Depot; granddaughters, Stacie Thewes of Laurel, Maryland and Terri Slack of Chicago, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Blaine, Bayley and Kyle Slack.

Service was held Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Harold Richards officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

The family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimers Association, 1111 Lee Street East, Charleston WV 25301.

Pauline Grant

Pauline Gillispie Grant, 81, of Five and Twenty Road, Fraziers Bottom, died April 7, 2004, at home after a short illness.

She was a homemaker and a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She attended Five and Twenty United Baptist Church, Fraziers Bottom.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robinson L. “Pete” Grant, and daughter, Brenda Tully of Hamlin.

Surviving: daughters, Jeannie Hedrick, Linda Alford and Gayle Chapman, all of Fraziers Bottom, Barbara Paxton of Teays Valley, Mary Grant of Spring Hill, Sharon Steele of Glenwood, and Marsha Bostic of Barboursville, sons, Curtis and Keith, both of Winfield, Cary Grant of Proctorville, Ohio, Kyle Grant and Craig Grant, both of Fraziers Bottom; brothers, her twin, Eugene Gillispie of Milton, Alva Gillispie of Elizabethtown, Kentucky and Cleatis Gillispie of Pliny; sisters, Wanda Livezey of Fort Myers, Florida and Emma Jean Miller of Alkol; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Service was held Saturday, April 10, 2004, at chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Ronnie Brown officiating. Burial was in Fraziers Bottom United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank Kanawha Hospice Care and Hubbard Hospice House for their care and support.

James F. Painter

James F. Painter, 73, of Red House died April 7, 2003, following a long illness.

He was a retired operations manager from Bearings Inc., Charleston, with 39 years' service and attended Bowles Ridge Community Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otho and Ollie Higginbotham Painter, brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Margaret Painter Smith, brother, Happy Painter, and sister, Geneva Boggs.

Surviving: his wife of 48 years, Loretta Hartley Painter; brother, Glen Painter of Nitro; sister, Loretta Isaacs of Nitro; several neices, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Service was held Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Paul Arthur and Scott Casto officiating. Burial was in Wade Chapel Cemetery, Red House.
