George Frank McGhee, 93, died September 23, 2004, at home following an extended illness.
Born March 21, 1911 in Hurricane, he was a son of the late V.S. and Mae McGhee.
Before he retired from Union Carbide, Frank purchased a farm in Griffithsville and enjoyed farming the land for several years.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, sons-in-law, Richard Thomas and Bill White , sisters, Fay McGhee, Donna and Ruby Lucas, brothers, Clyde, Clay, Raymond, Robert, Joe, and Fred McGhee, and twin grandsons.
Surviving: daughters, Barbara White Templeton and her husband, Jerry, of Milton, Sharon Thomas of Hurricane; sons, Billy McGhee and his wife, Carolyn, of Charleston, Michael McGhee and his wife, Kathy, Scott Depot; brother, Charles McGhee of Hurricane; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Gay McCallister.
Service was held Monday, September 27, 2004, at Valley View Memorial Park, Chapel of the Guardian Angel, Hurricane, with Pastor Bruce Young officiating. Entombment was in the mausoleum. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Harold Junior Shaffer
Harold Junior Shaffer 79, of Ona, W.Va., passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Jimmy Dailey and the Rev. Jody Fortner. Burial in Bicker Cemetery. He was born May 6, 1925, in Cabell County, a son of the late Thomas and Ethel Blake Shaffer. He worked for CSX at the Raceland and Huntington shops for 29 years. He was a retired employee of the Cabell County Board of Education, where he drove a school bus for 15 years. He also owned and operated a sawmill for 23 years. He was a member of Barker Ridge United Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Iva Mae Bates Shaffer; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Liz Shaffer and John and Nina Shaffer, all of Ona; one sister Evelyn Daniels of Ona; one brother Bernie Shaffer of Indiana; two grandsons and spouse, John Thomas and Becky Shaffer and Josh Shaffer, all Ona; and five step-grandchildren, Vicky and Rick Schawe of Covington Ky., Bill Shaffer of Michigan, Bob and Carolyn Shaffer of Huntington, Kandy and Glen Freeman and Marlanna and John Trent, all of Huntington.
Kathryn L. Stapleton
Kathryn L. Stapleton, 75, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Pete Davidson officiating. Burial in Rome (Ohio) Cemetery. She was born March 30, 1929, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Roy R. and Vera M. Fulford. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jesse J. Stapleton. She attended Antioch Baptist Church and was a member of the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sheila and Jesse Adkins of Milton, Sherry and Mike McColgan of Columbus, Ohio, and Sabra Pergeo of Huntington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Leroy and Kelli Stapleton of Rex, Ga., Hank and Cheryl Stapleton of Columbus and James and Valerie Stapleton of Huntington; four sisters, Juanita Ross of Huntington, Gloria Markowitz of Bowie, Md., Brenda Mahurin of Phoenix and Sharon Fulford of Huntington; one brother, Leroy Fulford of Huntington; 19 grandchildren, including David Stapleton, who she raised; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Eileen T. Kirby
Eileen T. Kirby, 82, of Scott Depot, formerly of St. Albans, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at home after a short illness.
Born July 17, 1922, in South Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Carl R. and Gertrude Miles Thompson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Andrew H. Kirby; and her sister, Betty L. Luoni.
Surviving are her sons, Andrew H. Kirby and his wife, Paulette, of Montgomery, Texas , and C. Michael Kirby of Dallas, Texas ; daughter, Susan Smith and her husband, Daniel, of Scott Depot; and grandchildren, Trey and Chad Kirby of Texas and Neal Smith of Scott Depot.
Services were held Friday, Sept. 24th, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Rick McCormick officiating. Burial in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Ralph Gene Parker
Ralph Gene Parker, 67, of Hurricane died Sept. 21, 2004, at CAMC General Hospital, Charleston.
He was formerly employed by Union Carbide, Institute.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William K. and Goldie Harris Parker; his sisters, Eva Westfall and Mildred Harper; and his brother, Don Parker.
Surviving are his wife, Hope “Sissy” Parker; his sisters, Claudia Chandler of Clendenin and Dorma Parker of Fort Worth, Texas ; and his brothers, Doy Parker of Big Chimney and Ronald Parker of Ringgold, La.
Services were held Saturday, Sept. 25th, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial in Clover Cemetery, Spencer.
Hazel M. Shamblin
Hazel M. Kinser Shamblin, 79, of Nitro departed this life Sept. 22, 2004, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
Hazel was a 39-year resident of Brookhaven Subdivision and was a member of Cross Lanes Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, Malden. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed studying her Bible and Sunday school lesson. She was a 1943 graduate of Elkview High School and attended the Blue Creek Train Reunion.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, John F. Shamblin; children, John P. Shamblin of Nitro, Cloa S. Shamblin and Timothy L. Shamblin, both of Cross Lanes; sisters, Beulah Taylor of Charleston, Bonnie Boggess of Overland Park, Kan.; brother, Bill Kinser of Olmstead Falls, Ohio; and her granddaughter and pride and joy, Dakotah Lee Shamblin of Cross Lanes.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 25th, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home with the Rev. Seth Polk officiating. Burial in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Pearl Woodall Bias
Pearl Woodall Bias, 86, of Salt Rock passed away September 22, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday, September 24, 2004, at the Wallace Home & Chapel by Pastor Jeff Sizemore. Burial in Bias Cemetery. She was born on April 7, 1918, in Hamlin, W.Va., a daughter the late Homer Jefferson Wood and Garnet Jewell Pridemore Woodall. She was preceded in death by the late Joseph C. Bias, dearly loved husband and father; one sister, Lillie Savage; two brothers, Charles Woodall and Joshua “Buddy” Woodall. Joe and Pearl were the loving parents of four children, David Bias and his wife, Mary Beth of Salt Rock, Mary Lou Markin of Barboursville, Martha Parsons and her husband Larry, of Barboursville, Ruth Ann Blanton of Barboursville; she is also survived by six grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, of whom she was very proud; also surviving are one brother, Lester Woodall and his wife, Jennette, of Salt Rock; four sisters, Nancy Woodall of Barboursville, Lucille Markins and her husband, James, of Barboursville, Margaret Bledsoe and her husband, Leonard, of Salt Rock, Ann Chandler of Crown City, Ohio. She retired from Huntington Manufacturing Company in 1980 after 35 years of work. She is a member of Bloomingdale-Salem Baptist Church. She will be lovingly remembered by her family, relatives and friends of whom there are many.

Gracie L. Lewis, 82, of Milto slipped peacefully away at her residence Tuesday, September 21, 2004, to be with Jesus and to be reunited with her husband, James Lewis, who preceded her in death. Funeral services were conducted Friday, September 24, 2004, at Heck Home, Milton with the Rev. Gerry White and the Rev. Tracy Mills officiating. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. She was born October 9, 1921 in Louisa, Ky., a daughter of the late Edgar and Lillie Diamond. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Pancake, Roberta Sullivan and Kathleen McCoy, and one brother, Tillman Diamond. She was a member of Union Baptist Church, Milton. She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Pauley of Milton; son and daughter-in-law, John G. and Barbara Lewis of Milton; two sisters, Caroline Cupp of North Carolina and Dora Cyrus of Milton; seven grandchildren, Aimee Reeves, Jack Hatfield, Tracy Hatfield, John D. Lewis, Heather Pauley, Kelly Mullins and Michelle Chapman; 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to her caretaker, Becky Conrad, Hospice of Huntington and Dr. Gerrit Kimmey for their excellent loving care.
Guynes Irene Walker, 80, of Barboursville went to be with her Lord Wednesday, September 22, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Friday, September 24, 2004, at Fellowship Baptist Church by Dr. Jerry Warren. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born September 23, 1923, in Lincoln County, West Virginia a daughter of the late Alonzo and Nina Bostic Hoke. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Eldon Walker; one daughter, Diana Hibner and her husband Ed of Ona; three sons, Gene Walker, Ronald “Pete” Walker and his wife, Jill, all of Barboursville, and Homer Walker and his wife, Betty, of Lavalette; two sisters, Faye Mills and Glenice Hardwick, both of Ohio; four grandchildren, Travis Hibner, Brandon Hibner, Megan Hibner and Courtney Walker. Lucy Marie Hovatter
Lucy Marie Hovatter, 83, of East Bank, stepped into Glory Sept. 21, 2004.
She was born July 24, 1921, to the late Ohlen and Opha Ervin of Kingwood, WV.
She met Warren G. Hovatter in a one-room schoolhouse and eventually married him on April 30, 1938.
She was the epitome of the Christian mother, grandmother, wife, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed and often remembered by all who were blessed to have known her.
She is survived by her son, Harold W. Hovatter of Preston County; daughters, Bonnie Kay Slack of Winfield, Carol Marie Acord of East Bank; grandchildren, Rick Hovatter, Sherry Blair, Christopher Hovatter, Tammy Novak, Kathy Boyd, Jeff Slack, Anna Michaelson; and great-grandchildren, Danielle Hovatter, Morgan Blair, Jourdan and Oliva Boyd, Blaine Bayley and Kyle Slack, Alexandria and Abigail Michaelson and Michael Novak. She also is survived by many nephews, nieces, and those who loved her warm smile and gracious heart.
Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Thursday, September 23, at East Bank United Methodist Church. Burial services were private.

Barton Carroll Craig Jr.
Barton Carroll Craig Jr., 39, of Leon, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at the University of Florida Medical Center, following a sudden illness.
He was an electrical lineman for Quality Line Co. Inc. with 12 years of service, attended Manilla Chapel and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Willion Tucker and Clinton Craig; and a brother, Jeffrey Craig.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnne Brown Craig; stepson, Joseph Wagner at home; stepdaughter, Michelle Wagner, at home; mother and father, Barton Carroll and Janet M. Tucker Craig of
Leon; brother, Tony Craig and his wife, Kim, of Red House; sisters, Michelle Hanshaw and her husband, Mike, of Buffalo, Sabrina Floyd of Lancaster, Ohio; nephews, Cody, Blaise, Lance, Joseph, J.T., Dustin, Braddock, Casey, Chris, Justin, and Matthew; nieces, Justeen and Kelsey.
Services were held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Mick Bailes and Pastor Randy Parsons officiating. Burial with military graveside rites by Mountaineer VFW Post No. 9097 were held at Buffalo Memorial Park, Buffalo.
Mary Lucille Dorsey
Mary Lucille Dorsey, 72, of Nettie, Nicholas County, WVa., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 20, 2004.
She was a loving wife and mother, a homemaker, and a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church at Nettie.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Gale; two daughters, Ann Young of Leivasy and Nancy O'Dell of Point Pleasant; one son, David Dorsey of Charleston; one sister, Betty McClung of Hometown; one brother, Kenneth Grose of Oakland City, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in the Olive Branch Baptist Church at Nettie with the Rev. Stuart Stover and the Rev. Garlin Groves officiating. Interment in the Fairview Cemetery at Nettie.
White Funeral Home, Summersville, was in charge of arrangements.
