Richard D. Chapman

Richard D. Chapman, 57, formerly of Milton, W Va, died September 20, 2004, at his home in Springfield, Va, after an 18 month courageous battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was born March 8, 1947, in Huntington a son of the late Oscar and Thelma Smith Chapman. He is also preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy. He was a 1965 graduate of Milton High School and served in the U.S. Marines, and was a Corporate Accountant at Huntley, Nyce & Associates in Chantilly, Va. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Nancy Lane Chapman; one daughter, Justa Chapman of Anderson S.C; one son, Jared Chapman of Charlotte, N.C.; six sisters and four brothers-in-law, Violet Courts, Norma (Melvin) Stratton, Pauline Bledsoe, Ora Gail (Homer) Cain all of Milton, Donna (Roy) Weekly of Ona and Linda (Bruce) Stewart of Mission Viejo, Calif; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles (Linda) Chapman of Barboursville, David (Melody) Chapman, John (Faye) Chapman and Donald (Janet) Chapman all of Milton. Memorial services were held Saturday, September 25, 2004, at St Christopher's Episcopal Church Springfield, Va.

Elisabeth Valerie Grice

Elisabeth Valerie Grice, 78, of Barboursville, widow of William Kenneth Grice, died Tuesday in Mariner Health Care, Huntington. She was formerly a volunteer at the Transylvania Community Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Humble of Huntington; a son, Dr. Stephen Charles Grice of Alpharetta, Ga.; a brother, Dr. John Hearn of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Nina Berested of London, England; and three grandsons, Cpl. John Humble of Jacksonville, N.C., and Taylor Grice and Nathan Grice, both of Alpharetta, Ga. Memorial services were held Thursday, September 23, 2004 at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with the Rev. Donald Vinson. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Scott M. Grieco

Scott M. Grieco, 31, of Barboursville, W.Va., husband of Angela Grieco, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with the Rev. Jim Bailey officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born July 19, 1973, in Millington, Tenn., a son of Charles “Mike” Grieco of Salt Rock, and Linda Kay Adkins of Proctorville. Scott was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Florence Grieco, who was waiting for him with open arms. He attended Huntington East High School and was a conductor for CSX Railroad. Additional survivors include a son, Scottie Grieco, and stepdaughter, Baley Harris, both of Barboursville; his stepmother, Jeannie Grieco of Salt Rock; two sisters, Melanie Grieco, stationed in Alameda, Calif., and Alison Grieco of Huntington; and a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Tonya Grieco of Crown City, Ohio.

Christina Renee' Dixon

Christina Renee' Dixon, 31, of Barboursville, ascended to Paradise Friday, September 17, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Shawnee Drive, Huntington, with Bishop David Wiley officiating. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. She was born August 10, 1973, in Huntington, a daughter of John M. Dexter of Kansas City, Mo., and the late Rebecca Ann Robinson Dexter. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a 1991 graduate of Huntington East High School, a 1996 graduate of Marshall University and a former public relations specialist for Black Diamond Girl Scout Counsel. Survivors include her husband, Larry Dixon of Barboursville; one daughter, Rebecca Campbell Dixon and two sons, Tanner Riley Dixon and Elijah James Dixon, all at home; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Larry and Rose Dixon of Missouri; sister-in-law, Alisha Dixon of Worcester, Mass.; maternal grandparents, Carl and Doreen Robinson of Huntington, and numerous other relatives and friends. Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers it is requested that donations be made to Curtis B. Anderson, Trustee of the Dixon Education Fund which has been established for the benefit of their three children. Please mall your memorial gift to 618 10th St, Huntington, WV 25701.

Jesse L. Bailes

Jesse L. Bailes, 84, of South Charleston, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, of heart failure.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Tracy John Strobel in 1962; wife, Vivian Adams Bailes in 1964; wife, Margaret McCarty Bailes in 1976.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a carpenter by trade and a building contractor of 14 homes in the Montrose area of South Charleston, as was his father, A.W Bailes Sr.

Survivors include daughters, Martha Rogers of Dallas, Ga., Carolyn Strobel of Charleston; grandchildren, Yvonne Wiles of Morgantown, Brian Grissinger of Dallas, Ga., Eric Strobel and wife, Misty, of Charleston, Brent Morgan and wife, Amy, of Poca, W.Va.; great-grandchildren, Christopher Grissinger of Charleston, Brittany Grissinger of Dallas, Ga., Heather, Alex, and Natalie Morgan of Poca, Erika and Courtney Strobel of Sissonville, Anthony Wiles of Morgantown; great-granddaughter, Faith Elizabeth Grissinger of Charleston; sisters, Etha Emery and Nancy Hickman of Bremerton, Wash., and Rosalie Griffith of Tennessee.

Graveside services were conducted Saturday, September 18, 2004 at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.

Melvin E. Burgess

Melvin Edward “Buck” Burgess, 71, of Charleston, died Sept. 16, 2004, at home after a battle with cancer. He was born in Logan County, W.Va., the son of the late Leonard and Lillian Burgess. He served four years in the United States Navy aboard the USS Muliphen AKA-61, and retired from C&P Telephone Co. after 43 years of service.

He was a member of Bell Atlantic Retirees Association, the Pioneers, and the McConnell Tabernacle. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.

Mr. Burgess is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty L. (Shirey); three daughters, Sondra and husband, Mark Sexton of Proctorville, Ohio, Frances and husband, Scott Arrington of Winfield, W.Va., Lisa Burgess of Cross Lanes; and two very special grandchildren, Courtney and Joshua Sexton of Proctorville. In addition, he is survived by three brothers, Richard and wife, Betty, of McConnell, W.Va., Bruce and wife, Deborah, of Gilbert, W.Va., and Leonard “Guy” and wife, Nora of Harts, W.Va.; two sisters, Dixie Clevenger and Kathy Keyser of McConnell; Aunt Ruby and husband, James Jimison of McConnell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 18, at J.E. Johnson Funeral Home, Kanawha City with the Rev. Alvin Cox officiating.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Charleston, and Gentiva Home Health. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of Charleston.

Kathleen Caldwell

On Sept. 18, 2004, after a short illness, our precious mother, Kathleen McCormick Caldwell went home to be with her Lord and loved ones.

She was born at Paradise, W.Va., to the late Solman and Letha McCormick.

Leaving to grieve her passing are daughters, Nadine Greene of Cleveland, Ohio, Dale Caldwell Young of Hurricane, W.Va., and Judy Lovejoy of Hometown, W.Va.; sons, Wayne Caldwell of Hurricane, W.Va., and Terry Caldwell of St. Albans; sisters, Reba Hawley and Mabel Brown; as well as many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Culloden with the Rev. Lyle McMicken officiating. Burial in Haven of Rest, Hometown, W.Va. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangement.

Luke W. Michael

Luke W. Michael, 88, of Nitro passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Teays Valley Center in Hurricane, W.Va., after a long illness.

He was a native of Ruckman in Hampshire County, W.Va., and a resident and practicing attorney in Nitro since 1948. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, 98th. Bomb Group, during World War II, having served with distinction in the European and Eastern Mediterranean theaters of operations. Luke was a recipient of the Soldier's Medal, the EAME Theater Ribbon, with 11 Bronze Stars, and a unit citation for meritorious service.

Luke attended West Virginia School of Law in Morgantown, W.Va., and Pittsburgh University. He was a former school teacher and principal in Slanesville, W.Va., a former employee of the WV Treasury Department, and former Nitro City attorney. He attended The Nitro Church of God. He is survived by his wife, Armetha, of Nitro; son, Darel of Dunkirk, Md.; and many friends, neighbors, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 19, at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel in Nitro with the Rev. Rob VanFossen officiating. Burial in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans.

Hilda Jane Racer

Hilda Jane Racer, 81, of Nitro, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at the Valley Center in South Charleston, after a long illness. She was a registered nurse with 45 years of service, retiring from Thomas Memorial Hospital in 1987 with more than 30 years of service. During her career, she touched the lives of many people. She loved her Lord, her family, nursing and people. She believed in the human spirit and saw only the positive side of life. She believed a person could do anything and achieve any goal they set their heart on. If one of her patients was down, she would sing them an off-key song. If a person felt defeated she would offer encouragement and if someone thought something happened to them that was bad, she always made them think it wasn't as bad as they thought after all. Even in her own sickness, she never complained or asked for anything. She simply accepted things as she always did.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Nitro, and participated in the Nitro Senior Citizens program and was a 52-year resident of Nitro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Q. Racer. She is survived by daughters, Carol Miller of Teays Valley, Linda Oldham of Nitro and Brenda Bowling of Middletown, Ohio; sons, William Racer of Nitro, Terry Racer of Sumter, S.C., and Jerry Racer of Niceville, Fla.; brothers, Alfred Fagan of Poca and Wilbur Fagan of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at The Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Nitro with the Rev. Richard Chirichiello officiating. Entombment in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens in Cross Lanes. Cooke Funeral Home Chapel in Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.

Geraldine Jean Rogers

Geraldine Jean Rogers, 68, of St. Albans, died Sept. 15, 2004, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Rogers; her daughter, Cindy Jean Rogers; her parents, John Ervin and Donnie Alice Lovejoy Russell; her sisters, Connie Justice and Jenny Hawkins.

She will be sadly missed by her children, John E. Rogers of St. Albans, Clifford W. Rogers of Johnson City, Tenn., Clayton E. Rogers at home, David Lee Rogers of Cross Lanes, and Penny A. Rogers of Scott Depot; her sisters, Ella Loveless of St. Albans and Vada Alford of Wilmington, N.C.; her brothers, Ervin Russell and Eugene Russell, both of St. Albans, Tommy Dixon, Lulu Dixon and Danny Dixon, both of Nitro, and Woody Dixon of South Charleston; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

At her request, a graveside service was held Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004 at Scary Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Scott Depot, W.Va. Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Ann Rucker

Margaret Ann Rucker, 63, of Hometown, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, after a long illness.

She was a homemaker and a 12-year resident of Hometown, formerly of Charleston.

She is survived by a son, Jay Rucker of Hometown, W.Va.; daughters, Teresa Luikart of Leon, W.Va., and Carol Keliher of St. Albans; sisters, Mary Bush of Salem, Ore., and Judi Cartwright of Poca, W.Va.; brother, Kenneth Dawson of West Virginia; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jesse Joe Tribble

Jesse Joe Tribble, 18, of Winfield, W.Va., died Sept. 16, 2004.

Born Nov. 4, 1985, in Charleston, Jesse was a 2004 graduate of Winfield High School, where he had been active with the golf, baseball, and basketball teams, and also had been a member of the ski club. Jesse was very active with athletics, and thoroughly enjoyed skiing and snowboarding. He was currently employed with Metal Wood Bats, Eleanor, W.Va., and was a lifelong resident of the Winfield area.

Surviving are his father, Jimmy Tribble and his wife, Kama, of Winfield, W.Va.; his mother, Christie Tribble and our longtime companion, J.D. Lacy of Cross Lanes; his brothers, Pvt. 2nd Class Jamie Tribble of Fort Campbell, Ky., and Chase Tribble of Winfield, W.Va.; his sister, Alexis Tribble of Winfield, W.Va.; grandmothers, Nola Maynor of Hurricane, W.Va., and Murl Louise Tribble of Leon, W.Va.; great-grandmothers, Gladys Forth of Hurricane, W.Va., and Louise Pickens of Leon, W.Va.; several aunts and uncles, including Carl and Teresa Caldwell of Hurricane, W.Va., Joey and Karri Forth of Pataskala, Ohio, Tammy and David Wiley of Moneta, Va.; and cousins, including C. D. Caldwell and his wife, Ashley, Joshua Caldwell, Ian, Katy, and Scott Forth, and Jonathan and Emily Wiley.

Services were held Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield Road, with the Rev. Doug McComas officiating. Burial in the Grandview Cemetery, Red House, W.Va.

Virginia R. Dobbins

Virginia Ruth Carlson Dobbins, 87, of Scott Depot, was escorted by loving angels to the waiting arms of her Heavenly Father, Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at 2 p.m,, after a three year courageous battle with cancer. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.

Virginia will be remembered for her faith, courage, strength and determination to overcome any adversity. In 1958, she survived her first battle with cancer and even losing one arm did not stop her from living life to the fullest. She loved to cook, bake and entertain. She loved golf, family get-togethers and playing canasta. Her joy was her daughter and grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda K. Hudnall of Scott Depot; granddaughter and husband, Lori A. and Roger Coffee; her great-grandchildren, Tina Scott, Amanda Kennerly, `Tammy Kennerly of Texas , and Stephanie Michelle Coffee of California; her grandson, Michael E. Passerotti and his wife, Sharon; great-grandchildren, Alicia, Elijah and Joshua Passerotti of Ohio; her loving sister, Mary Lockard of Charleston, who will soon be 96 years old and many wonderful nieces and nephews; and her lifetime friend Nellie Sabo.

The family wishes to thank all who have sat and talked with Virginia. A special thanks to her best friend, Juanita Creech for her love and support and to her longtime family physician Dr. Stephen Smith, and most of all to Kanawha Hospice Care Inc., and Brian Rumberg, R.N.

A private family service was held at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home. Burial in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.

The family requests that donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care Inc., 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064.
