Freddie Joe Warden

After an extended illness at Ohio State University Medical Center, Freddie Joe Warden went to sleep peacefully at his home in Barboursville and awoke in the arms of his Heavenly Father on Sunday, August 29, 2004. He was born on September l4, 1937, in Barboursville, W.Va. His parents, Carl Edgar Warden Sr. and Edith Cazad Warden Nida, preceded him in death. Freddie is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Clara Jean Eden Warden; his loving daughters, Teresa (Craig) Byers and Kristina (Cory) Balser; two grandchildren, Jeremy Byers and Jean Ann (Jamie) Sheppard. Survivors who comforted him in his final days include special sisters, Patty (Henry) King of Dublin, Ga., Nadine (Larry Joe, Sr.) Cyrus of Barboursville, a dear sister-in-law, Judy (Joe) Ware of West Hamlin, and a loving cousin, Janet Copley of Proctorville, Ohio. Additional survivors include sister, Donna Jean (Tony) Case of Mount Pleasant, Pa.; brothers, Carl Edgar, Jr. (Evelyn) Warden of Springfield, Ohio, Douglas Warden of Elkins, W.Va., and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Warden served on the USS Randolph during the Korean Conflict. He retired as Foreman of Mechanics for the Cabell County Board of Education. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Pea Ridge United Methodist. A celebration of his entrance into God's eternal Kingdom was held at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville on Thursday, September 2nd. Reverend Sue Culbertson Jarrett officiated.

Pallbearers were Charlie Perry, Scott Bledsoe, Greg Porter, Freddy Ryder, Harry Fisher, and Darvin (Jr.) Boster. Honorary Pallbearers were the bus drivers and mechanics of the Cabell County Board of Education. Interment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. Third Street, New York, NY 10016; The Unverferth House, 190 King Avenue, Columbus, OH 43201 or the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church.

Helen L. Meadows

Helen L. Meadows, 84, of Milton went home to be with her Lord Monday, August 30, 2004 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, September 2, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Rev. Chelcie Gibson officiating. Burial in Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Milton. She was born November 8, 1919, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Emmitt and Mary Lullen Dailey. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, W.O. “Bill” Meadows; one brother, Basil Dailey; four sisters, Thelma McComas, Maxine White , Elsie Jenkins and Evelyn Jenkins. She was a lifetime member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church and retired from Blenko Glass after 40 years of service. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Lorene Meadows and Jeff and Linda Meadows; two daughters and one son-in-law, Carol Lego and Betty and Buck Perry; nine grandchildren, Kim and Ron Mayes, Kathy and Gary Chapman, Steve Lego and Julianna Bills, Tracey Laprad, Mark Lego and Mary Brewer, W.D. Perry, W.J. Meadows, Amanda and Bryan Adams and Tony Davis; six great-grandchildren, Justin, Joshua and Jordan Laprad, Cody Meadows, Zachary Lego and Robert Brewer; one brother, Donald Dailey. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Carroll Herman Collins

Mr. Carroll Herman Collins, 82, of Huntington, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 29, 2004, after a long illness. He was born in Cabell County, the son of the late Samuel and Agnes Clark Collins. Carroll was a retired carpenter with Local #302, a veteran of WWII and attended Good Shepherd Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Burks Collins; two sons, Michael H. and John Collins; three brothers, Lyman, Roland and a twin brother, Harold (Babe) Collins. He is survived by his adopted family of 14 years, where he made his home, Dorothy H. Carroll, Alice J. Perry, Thomas Ferguson all of Huntington, Sandra L. Harper, Kathy and Tony Petry, Barry and Stephanie Harper, Karen and Richard White ; five great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, all of Van, WV; one son, Jack Collins; one daughter, Jean Woody; and a host of friends and neighbors. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington, Dr. Ralph Stephens and staff for the special care they have provided in this time of need. Services were conducted Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at Henson Mortuary with Pastor Larry Sanders and the Rev. David Collins officiating. Burial in Caldwell Cemetery, Lesage, with military rites. Karen Kay Rose

Karen Kay McComas Rose, 52, of Trinity, Florida, formerly of Hurricane, died Sunday, August 15, 2004, in Tampa, Florida.

She was born February 22, 1952 in Huntington, a daughter of the late Henry and Imogene Powell McComas. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Wanda Lou Legg and Sarah Garland.

She was a member of St. Timothy's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, Hurricane.

Surviving: husband, Robert L. “Bob” Rose Jr., sons, Robert L. “Robbie” Rose III and Trevor W. Rose of Trinity; daughters, Christa Dyke of Champaign, Illinois and Kara Beth Rose of Huntington; sisters, Nancy Ann Cargill of Sarasota, Florida and Linda Carter of Milton.

Service was held Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at St. Timothy's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church with the Rev. William Fulks officiating. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Ione S. Smith

Ione S. Smith, 89, of Winfield died Sunday, August 22, 2004, following an extended illness.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph Boston and Lavenia Jordan Short. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Clifton and James Short, sister, Juanita Sponaugle, and husband, Evangelist Flavil K. Smith.

She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, a homemaker and a former employee of Cabin Creek Quilts and The Flower Mart.

Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Ray Reynolds; granddaughters, Renee Thompson and Raina Blanton; great-grandsons, Garrett and Dakotah; 10 nieces and four nephews.

Service and burial was private. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Karen Kay McComas Rose

Karen Kay McComas Rose, 52, of Trinity, Fla., formerly of Hurricane, passed away Sunday, August 15, 2004, in Tampa, Fla. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at St. Timothys In-The-Valley Episcopal Church, Hurricane, with the Rev. William Fulks officiating. She was born Feb. 22, 1952, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Henry and Imogene Powell McComas. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Wanda Lou Legg and Sarah Garland. She was a member of St. Timothys In-The-Valley Episcopal Church. She is survived by her husband, Robert L. “Bob” Rose Jr.; two sons, Robert L. “Robbie” Rose III and Trevor W. Rose of Trinity, Fla.; two daughters, Christa Dyke of Champaign Ill. and Kara Beth Rose of Huntington; and two sisters, Nancy Ann Cargill of Sarasota, Fla. and Linda Carter of Milton. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

William S. Elkin

William S. “Bill” Elkin, 53, of Hurricane died August 22, 2004 after a brave battle with cancer.

He was born April 26, 1951 in Chalreston, a son of Dr. W. Paul Elkin and the late Grace Harris Elkin. He was also preceded in death by his twin brother, Robert H. “Bob” Elkin, in 1992.

He attended school in Virginia, Maine and Florida and served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Belguim. He returned to this area where he worked as an independent contractor and finish carpenter. He was an active member of Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church, Hurricane, and was an avid animal lover and advocate.

Surviving in addition to his father: sister, Linda Elkin of Seattle, Washington , and brother, Jim Elkin of New York.

Service was held Friday, August 27, 2004, at Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor John D. Smith officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donation may be made to either Kanawha Hospice Care Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064; or Rock of Ages Prison Ministry, PO Box 2308, Cleveland OH 37320.

Clara Esther Cottrill

Clara Esther Hanna Cottrill, 84, of Cross Lanes died Monday, August 23, 2004.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Throughout her life, she was an avid bowler. She loved all types of sports, was a fisherwoman and loved to play Rook and work crossword puzzles. Her hobbies included crocheting, quilting and knitting. She loved the piano and guitar.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Cecil W. Hanna, and her second husband, Donald Cottrill.

Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Gary Harris of Poca; sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Lee “Buddy” and Reba Hanna and Pastor Michael D. and Beryl Hanna, all of Liberty, Cecil and Janet Hanna of Red House; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a host of great neighbors, church family and friends.

Service was held Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at Riverside Baptist Church, Red House, with her son, Pastor Michael D. Hanna, officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, was in charge of arrangements.

Dewey W. Duke

Dewey Wilburn Duke, 83, of Hurricane died August 22, 2004, at home after a long illness.

He was a member of Main Street Church of Christ, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Iron Workers Local 201.

He was a loving father and dedicated grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Wilmah Faye Duke.

Surviving: daughter and her husband, Reba and Jeff Bailey of Hurricane, and their son, Todd; son and his wife, D.W. and Shirley Duke, and their children, Jennifer Ann, Heather, Annie and A.J., all of South Charleston; brothers, Carson Duke of South Point, Ohio and James Duke of Milton; nephew and his wife, Lonnie and Mary Margaret Duke of Hurricane; special friends, Montana Reeves, Ann Hall and Nadine Newcomber; a hots of many other family and friends.

Service was held Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Minister Donald Mash and Doug Minton officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Claude C. Deardoff

Claude C. Deardoff, 94, of Winfield, formerly of St. Albans and Nitro, died August 24, 2004, at the home of his daughter and her husband, Barbara and Lonnie DeHart of Ashburn, Virginia.

Born June 17, 1910 in Pliny, he was a son of the late Walter Wallace and Sarah Bertha Jane Jordan Deardorff. He was also preceded in death by his wives, Eunice Marie Chaney Deardorff and Mattie Elizabeth Kelley Deardorff; son, Claude Cecil Deardorff Jr.; sister, Virginia Deardorff Lanier Gilbert Seydewitz; and brothers, Homer and William Deardorff.

He was retired from Union Carbide, South Charleston, with 37 years of service and was a member of the AFL-CIO.

Also surviving: daughter and her husband, Betty D. and John B. Bennett of Winfield; sister, Mildred Deardorff Webster Gundrum of Georgia; grandchildren, Brian E. Bennett, John H. Bennett and his wife, Nancy, of Winfield, Nathan and Sarah DeHart of Ashburn; great-grandson, John F. Bennett of Winfield.

Service was held Saturday, August 28, 2004, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Joel M. Harpold officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Nina Leora Beller

Nina Leora Beller, 64, of Hurricane, formerly of Red House, died August 26, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital.

He was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Richerson.

Surviving: husband, Golden Beller; children, Thomas Null of Hurricane, Pamela Writesel of Boone County, Renee Barnett of Red House, and Eddie Beller of Red House; sisters, Effie Willis of Sissonville, Joyce Powell of Dublin, Georgia, Ladonna Parsons of Red House, and Virginia Spaulding of Eleanor; brother, John McCoy of St. Albans; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; other family and a host of friends.

Service was held Saturday, August 28, 2004, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca,. Burial was in Center Point Cemetery, Liberty.
