Mary Frances Cochran Nutter, 84, of Eleanor passed away Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, following a long illness. She was a homemaker, was a the secretary for the George Washington Middle School, Eleanor, with 23 years of service. She attended the Shalom Baptist Church, Fraziers Bottom, and was a member and the Past Worthy Matron of the Buffalo Chapter 150 of the O.E.S. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Thelma Mitchell Cochran; and her husband, Walter Taylor Nutter.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia F. Brewer of Eleanor; son, Michael Taylor Nutter of Lebanon, Ohio; brother, Harold “Buddy” Cochran of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Mishelle Yvonne Pembleton of Blanchester, Ohio, Melody Ann Nutter of Lebanon, Ohio, Natasha Noelle Brewer of Eleanor, Nicholas Taylor Brewer of Eleanor; one great-granddaughter, Madison Colleen Pembleton of Blanchester, Ohio.
Service were conducted Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor John Henderson officiating. Burial in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Elbert W. Thompson
Elbert W Thompson, 79, a longtime resident of Nitro, passed away on Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tenn., after a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his son David Michael Thompson; and Dolly Thompson, his wife of 57 years.
Elbert retired from Union Carbide after 32 years of employment. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force and a member of the Nitro Church of Christ.
Elbert is survived by his daughter, Teresa Thompson of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, John Thompson of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Kenneth Thompson and grandson, Kristopher Thompson, Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughter, Shannon and her husband, Clayton Hicks, and great-granddaughter, Chloe Hicks of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter-in-law Sharon Thompson of Virginia Beach, Va.; and special friends Jaime Branch and David Washburn of Nashville, Tenn.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004 at Nitro Church of Christ. Burial in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Samuel R. Hardway, 70, of Poca, died Oct. 4, 2004, at home after a short illness.
Samuel was a retired welder from Union Boiler, Nitro, with 20 years of service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pat Hardway; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Brian Wood of Cross Lanes; son, Jason Hardway of Cross Lanes; granddaughter, Sarah Weaver of Cross Lanes; brother, James Hardway of Cross Lanes; sisters, Erma Todd of Cross Lanes, Evelyn Gannon of Spring Hill.

Maxine Dillon Dotson, 77, of Huntington, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at the Inn at Wyngate. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 7, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Dr. Ed Grant and Rev. Ralph Sager. Graveside services were in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W.Va., by Rev. Janet Harmon. She was born December 21, 1926, in Iaeger, W.Va., a daughter of the late Walter Lee and Bertha Mae Tracy Dillon. She was a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church and a retired buyer for Cox's Department Store. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Bobbie Dotson of Pt. Pleasant, W.Va., Joel and Brenda Dotson of Louisville, Ky., and Allen Dotson of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter and son-in-law, Leta and Ed Kowal of Huntington; one brother, William “Bill” Darrell Dillon of Charleston, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Tomi Ann Cheek Lindsay Dotson, Edward and Anna Kowal; and one great-grandchild, Bailey Anne Cheek.
Edward L. Welch
Edward L. “Eddie” Welch, 47, of Nitro, died Sept. 29, 2004, at home after a sudden illness. He was employed by Trailer Specialist Company and was a former employee of Crown Pontiac, Nitro. He was a member of Nitro Moose Lodge 565.
He was a very loving and proud father.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Theresa “Pat” Welch; his natural mother, Reba McCallister Hinzman; and brothers, Jimmy Calvert and Larry Welch.
Surviving him are his daughter, Sabrina Leigh Welch of Austin, Texas ; brothers, Billy Welch and Clifford McCallister, both of Charleston; sisters, Deborah Robinson of Charleston and Roberta Haga of Jonesboro, Tenn. and former wife and lifelong friend, Bonnie Welch King.

Vernon E. Dudley
Vernon E. “Buck” Dudley, 77, of Scott Depot died Oct. 2, 2004 at his home after an extended illness.
Born July 11, 1927, in Eagle Rock, Va., he was the only son of the late Phillip Young Dudley and Mildred Hunter Dudley.
Mr. Dudley was a 1949 graduate of Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va., with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a former employee of Union Carbide Corporation with 18 years of service prior to his founding of Gala Industries Inc., of which he served as president and CEO. He was a member of St. Timothy's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, Hurricane, and served his country during World War II with the United States Army.
Surviving are: his wife, Lucile C. Dudley; his daughters, Laura D. Leslie and her husband, Robert W., of Winfield and Jaquelin D. Dudley, Ph.D., of Austin, Texas ; his granddaughters, Andrea Leslie and Corinne McLeod; his grandsons, Josh Leslie and Philip McLeod; his sister, Mary D. Pauley of Daleville, Va.; and his brother-in-law, Harold Wilhelm of Troutville, Va.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, at St. Timothy's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, Hurricane, with the Rev. Cheryl Winter officiating.
An additional memorial services will be held Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004 at Gala Industries Inc., 181 Pauley St., Eagle Rock, Va., with a reception immediately following the service. Interment will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Forest Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Eagle Rock, Va.

Ronnie Gerald Sergent
Ronnie Gerald Sergent, 55, of Hurricane died Oct. 2, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center after a short illness.
Ronnie was born Feb. 7, 1949, to Rosa Lee Sargent Christian and the late Wm. Gerald Sergent. He served his country in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. He worked for AEP at the John Amos plant for 31 years.
In addition to his mother, Ronnie is survived by: his wife of 33 years, Linda Thomasson Sargent; and daughters, Manisa Sargent of Culloden and Ronda Sargent of Hurricane. Ronnie was the proud grandfather of Alexandra Sargent and Ethan Glenn. He will also be missed by his three brothers and a sister, Donald W. Sargent and Wm. Allen Sergent of Culloden, Timothy D. Sergent and Marilyn Thornton, both of Hurricane; five nephews and four nieces; three great-nephews and four great-nieces; uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. Ronnie will also be missed by his father-in-law, mother-in-law and two brothers-in-law.

Byron Kraig Conrad, 36, of Lesage, W.Va., died Sunday September 26, 2004, from injuries in an automobile accident. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004 at Beard Mortuary with Rev. Rick Brown and Rev. Bobby Holcomb officiating. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. Kraig was born July 15, 1968, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of Byron V. and Myrna Deal Conrad of Lesage. He was a 1986 graduate of Barboursville High School and the assistant manager of the Lesage Foodland. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kama and Pat Garrity of Lesage and Kesha and Garland Holley of Glenwood, W.Va.; a niece and nephew, Kierra and Chaston Holley. He is also survived maternal grandmother, Nellie Deal of Lesage; paternal grandmother, Anyse Conrad of Milton; four aunts and three uncles, Adeline and Clinton Harbour of Lesage, Sheila and John Mitchell of Lesage and Dwight and Sharolyn Conrad of Milton and Linda Conrad of Milton, W.Va. James Jobe. Burial in Highland Cemetery. He was born July 8, 1936, in Akron Ohio, a son of the late George Thomas and Beulah E. Folk Schultz. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Graf Schultz; three daughters, Stacy Layman, Misty Layman and April Schultz; one son, David Schultz; two sisters, Mable Lindeman and Kathy Sturm; four brothers, Danny, Timmy, Jerry and Jimmy Schultz; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
