Ernest Joe Carter

Ernest Joe Carter, 75, of Lesage, widower of Rosalie Carter, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at Chapman's Mortuary with Mehmet Ayaz officiating. Burial with military honors was in Greenbottom Memorial Park. He was born June 8, 1929 in Cabell County, WV, a son of the late Albert and Lena Ora Burcham Carter. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Genevive Perry, and two brothers, Albert Perry Carter and Cecil Roy Carter. Ernest was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and retired from INCO as a steel mill worker. He was a beloved father and grandfather to his two daughters, Dianna Sue Bryant and spouse Mike of Marianna, Fl., and Vicki Carter and spouse Mark of Ft. Worth, Texas and two granddaughters, Julie Marie Warren of Alford, Fla., and Angela Lee Ayaz of Overland Park, Kan., and a great-granddaughter, Aise Nur Ayaz also of Overland Park, Kan.

Roger Lee Gibson

Roger Lee Gibson, 51, of Hurricane, father of William M. Gibson of Barboursville, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at home. He was a former machinist. Memorial services were conducted Saturday, October 2, 2004 at Calvary Baptist Church, Hurricane. Contributions to above mentioned church. Arrangements by Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane.

Elwood Frank Hall

Elwood Frank Hall, 73, of Barboursville, W.Va., died September 27, 2004, at home after a short illness. He is the son of the late C.J. “Lum” and Cora Edith Arbaugh Hall. He is also preceded in death by a son, Dwane Dewey Hall; six brothers and six sisters. He is survived by his wife, Jessie Stewart Hall; son, David Elwood and his wife, Eva Wilkes Hall, of Huntington, W.Va.; son, Dana Stewart Hall of Barboursville, W.Va.; daughter, Debrah and her husband, Carlos Morrus, of Wheelersburg, Ohio; granddaughter, Melanie and her husband, William Pawlikowski, of Columbus, Ohio; grandsons, Carlos and wife, Jessie Morris, of Athens, Ohio, Shane David Michael Hall of Huntington, W.Va.; one great-grandson, Alexander Matthew Morris of Athens, Ohio. He was retired from INCO Alloys, and was a member of the Minerva Lodge 13 AF&AM Masonic lodge. Funeral services were conducted Friday, October 1, 2004, at White Chapel Memorial Park Mausoleum with Masonic Graveside Rites. Beard Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Eloise Morris Morrison

Eloise Morris Morrison, 89, a lifelong resident of Milton, passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2004, in Morrow, Ga. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 2, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Dr. T.J. DuBose officiating. Burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. She was born January 18, 1915, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Delmer and Lula Hodges Morris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Glen Morrison and sister Martha Yoho. She was a member of Milton Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Joylene Taylor of Morrow, Ga.; two sons Roger Morrison of Enid, Okla., and Darrel Morrison of San Antonio, Texas ; one sister, Ada M. Gay of Fox Hill, Va.; special first cousin, Jean Dailey of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Christine Virginia Nimmo

Christine Virginia Nimmo, 82, of Huntington, passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, October 3, 2004, the Wallace Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ron Scarberry. Burial in Blue Sulphur Cemetery. She was born December 25, 1921, in Barboursville, a daughter of the late Lewis Brillie Scarberry and Helen Grove Scarberry. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Cleadith Nimmo who will be with his “Baby Doll” again. She is survived by three daughters, Linda Chapman and her husband Carl of Milton, Becky Fonduk and her husband Darrell, and Tammy Nimmo, all of Huntington; two brothers, Merle Scarberry of Barboursville, Bill Scarberry and his wife Ruth of Milton; four special grandchildren and their spouses, Greg and Tammy Chapman, Kelly and Jeff Ratliff, Mark and Chris Holley, and Kristen and Rick Blair; she was “Mamaw Nimmo” to Tanner Chapman and Jessica Adams; she was a special “Pink Mamaw” to Morgan, Zachary and Jacob Blair; her “adopted daughter” Sally Willis; and her very special kitty, “Wucci”. Pallbearers were Greg Chapman, Jeff Ratliff, Mark Holley, Rick Blair, Carl Chapman, and Darrell Fonduk. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Mary's Medical Center for their loving care.

Carnis Dale Baker

Carnis Dale Baker, 72, of Branchland went to be with the Lord Saturday, Oct 2, 2004. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Salem United Baptist Church by the Rev. Carlos Gibson, the Rev Jackie Walker and the Rev. Larry Perry. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery. He was born Aug. 1, 1932, in Cabell County, a son of Martha Dailey Baker of Branchland and the late John Andrew Baker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Inez Lorena Ramey Baker; one brother, Delmas Baker; and one sister, Jeanitta Seymour. He was retired from Steel of West Virginia and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was a member, deacon, treasurer, and former intermediate Sunday School teacher at Salem United Baptist Church. He was a trustee of Green Valley Cemetery and honorary trustee of Bethlehem Association of United Baptist Churches. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Joey Adkins of Barboursville; one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Deanna Baker of Barboursville; one sister, Juanita Albright of Huntington; three grandchildren, Vernon Dale Adkins and his wife, Rebecca, Joshua Craig Baker and Lori-Dell Baker, two step-grandchildren, Luke Flaugher and Laci Flaugher, two great-grandsons, Derek DuShawn Adkins and Hunter Andrew Adkins; and a special sister-in-law, Iva Adkins. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to give thanks to the relatives, neighbors and friends for their special care and support.

Allen W. Durst

Allen Wayne “Toolshed” Durst, 47, of Leon, died Oct. 2, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004 at Casto Funeral Home, Evans.

Lucille Jackson

Lucille Jackson, 89, of Ona died Saturday, October 2, 2004 in Sunbridge of Putnam Hurricane, W.Va. Funeral 2 pm Monday, October 4, 2004 at Beulah Ann Baptist Church, Ona; burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Ted Kirk

Ted Kirk, 79, of Barboursville, WVa., passed away Oct 1, 2004. He was born April 5, 1925, in Beauty, Ky, a son of the late Joe Kirk and Ada Horn Kirk. He served in the U.S. Army during World War 11 from 1941-1945, where he survived the attack of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and fought in the Pacific Theater. He was a recipient of two Bronze medals for acts of heroism. In 1950, he received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Chemistry from Marshall University. He retired from Huntington Alloys after 38 years of service, where he served as chairman, director and ASNT Fellow for the Tri-State section of the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing. He spent most of his adult life in Barboursville where he and Mary raised their three children. He proudly served his community as a Barboursville city councilman, Mayor of Barboursville, Vice President of Cabell County Community Services Organization (CCCSO), counsel for the Mental Health Crisis hotline and participated in the Barboursville Lions Club, Southwestern Community Action Council, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Elks Club, VFW and Toastmasters. He was active in several church functons at Our Lady of Fatima Church as a teacher of CCD classes and Eucharistic minister and spent many years as a student of theology, philosophy and ancient languages. He is survived by his wife, Mary Bruning Kirk; daughter, Bonnie Kirk of New York; two sons and daughters-in-law, Teddy and Ann Kirk of Chapel Hill N.C, and Cam and Bobbie Kirk of Richmond, Va; two sisters, Cordell Edwards of Barboursville and Anna Rose Taylor of Fort Worth Texas ;

two brothers, Millard and his sister-in-law, Mary Kirk of Barboursville and James Kirk of Austin, Texas ; three grandchildren, Chris Kirk of Austin, Shannon Kirk of Virginia Beach, Va., and Kristin Kirk of Chapel Hill, NC; and two step-grandsons, Michael and Tim ODell. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to Adrian Ryan Kirk Memorial Scholarship Fund (Virginia Beach Foundation, PO Box 4629, Virginia Beach, VA 23454) or Hospice of Huntington. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to extend special thanks to those at The Inn at Wyngate who gave such compassionate care during the time Ted spent as a resident.

William P. Meadows

William P. Meadows, ,73, of Huntington passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Beard Mortuary with the Rev. Kim Stone officiating. Burial in Spring Valley Memory Gardens, Huntington. He was born Feb. 28, 1931, in Mason County, W.Va., a son of the late Robert and Pansy Chapman Meadows. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, who were twins, Homer and Isaac Meadows and four brothers-in-law, George Doss, Ray Lake, Ledford Kuhn and Bill Wise. He is survived by his wife, Patricia “Patty” Meadows; his four children Perry and Angela Meadows of Cincinnati, Ohio, Richard and Peri Meadows of Evensville, Tenn., Jo Ann and Jim Lemmert of Richmond, Va., and Gene Meadows of Albany, N.Y.; one brother, Darrell and Jennifer Meadows of Hamlin, W.Va.; six sisters, Evelyn and Hallie Nicholas of Milton, Vivian Doss, of Culloden, Delores Wise of Milton, Mabel Kuhn of Ona, Roberta and Jim Templeton of Milton and Linda Meadows of Culloden; two brothers-in-law, Billy and Betsy Lake of Ona and George and Barbara Lake of Mount Union, W.Va.; two sisters-in-law, Hettie and Joe Reeves of Texas and Laura Lake of Huntington; seven grandchildren, Dustin Meadows, Cameron Meadows, Jessica Lemmert, Joshua Lemmert, Evan Meadows, Christopher Meadows and Sarah Meadows; one grandchild on the way; his dog and baby, “Digger” and Bull and Daisy Mae; and many special nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Marshall University Medical School for cardiac research.

William Vernon Minor

William Vernon Minor, 70, of Ona, W.Va., widower of Betty Mae Minor, passed away Sunday Oct. 3, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Dr. David B. Lemming officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born May 11, 1934, in Lincoln County, W.Va., a son of the late Edgar V. and Irene Collins Minor. He was a retired electrician with Huntington Alloys and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member and deacon of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Tammy Minor of Ona and Michael and Belinda Minor of Getaway, Ohio; two sisters, Marie Bowen of Lesage, W.Va., and Louise Tsismanakis of Huntington; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Joshua and Katie Minor.

Jeffrey Louis Smith

Jeffrey Louis Smith, 41, of Milton, beloved husband, father, son and brother, went home to be with his Lord Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Tracy Mills officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born Sept. 3, 1963, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Toby Smith. He is survived by his loving wife Toni Myers Smith; mother and stepfather, Joyce Jordan Smith Parsons and husband Edward; three sons, Joshua, Caleb and Noah Smith; one daughter, Lakin Smith; one sister, Alisa Mills and husband Tracy; one stepbrother, Craig Parsons; and one stepsister, Laynette Pemberton. Jeffrey will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Carrie Ellen Bird

Carrie Ellen Bird, 94, of Hurricane died Sunday, September 26, 2004, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

She was a homemaker, a member of Hurricane Church of the Nazarene and Hurricane Senior Citizens and was a lifelong resident of Putnam County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Losee D. Bird, parents, Wesley H. and Anna Hodges Wyant, sisters, Iva Williams, Ida Dent, Gladys Estes, Evelyn Chapman, Ruby Estes, and Mary Frances Wyant, and brother, Hubert Wyant.

Surviving: daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Bernard Carter, Sheila and Dwayne Bird, all of Hurricane; sister, Virginia Woody of Barboursville; grandchildren, Deborah Keeney and husband, Gary, and Bernard Allen Carter and wife, Patti; great-grandchildren, Jennifer N. Keeney and her husband, Bryan Greenhagen; several nieces and nephews.

Service was held Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Tim Gilfilen officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.

Memorial donations may be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston WV 25311.

Mary Trippett

Mary Trippett, 76, of Hurricane died September 25, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.

She was an 18 year resident of the area and was formerly of Hollywood, Florida. She was a former resident of Shawnee Hills. She was a Christian and attended Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving: nieces, Donna Atkinson and her husband, Dan, Janice Arthur and her husband, Butch; great-nieces, Sheri Rasberry, Melodi Trippett Cochran and Cari Trippett; great-nephews, Donald Atkinson, Adam and Wade Arthur, Marlon Trippett; sister-in-law, Marilyn Joseph and her husband, Romes.

Service was held Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Pastor John Smith and Pastor John Duffy officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Carl W. Flanagan

Carl William Flanagan, 87, of Outlook Pointe Assisted Care Center, Martinsburg, formerly of Romney, died Saturday, August 28, 2004, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born May 15, 1917 in Sunburst, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Clifford P. Flanagan and Lossie McClaine Flanagan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Senath Vaughan Flanagan.

He served as physical education director for 35 years at the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Romney. He previously worked as a park ranger for the National Park Service at Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier National Park and Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Prior to 1953 he served as athletic coach at Winfield High School. In 1948 he coached the high school football team that today continues to hold the all-time defensive record having allowed only 27 points in 10 games, and went on to play for the state championship. He was a World War II veteran.

He was a graduate of West Virginia University with a master's defree in physical education. He lettered in baseball and basketball and was inducted into the WVU Physical Education Hall of Fame. He was also a member of Parsons High School State Championship Basketball Team.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Romney, and a former member of the Romney Lions Club. He was a former member of the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple, Cumberland, and a 50-year 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Adams Stevens Chapter in Shepherdstown.

Surviving: son, W. Dale Flanagan of Charles Town; brothers, Lajoie Flanagan and Jimmie Flanagan, both of Cumberland; sister, Helen Fry of Knoxville, Tennessee; three grandsons.

A memorial service was held Saturday, September 4, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church, Romney, with Dr. Roy D. Knight and the Rev. Melissa Rudolph officiating. Interment was in Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.

Roger Lee Gibson

Roger Lee Gibson, 51, of Hurricane died Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at home.

He was a former machinist and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Hurricane, where he was the Sunday school superintendent along with being a Divorce Care Counselor. He was an avid bowler and was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame 2004. He was a graduate of Brookhaven High School, Columbus, Ohio, class of 1973.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James W. Sr. and Ozella M. Gibson, and a brother, Gary Gibson.

Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, William M. and Sara Gibson of Barboursville; granddaughter, Hailey Elizabeth Gibson; sister, Patsy Hazelrigg of Barboursville; brother and sister-in-law, James W. and Carol Gibson of Fort Mills, South Carolina; nephew, Eddie Gue of Barboursville; nieces, Sabrina Ruth of Salt Rock, Jerra Kendrick and husband, Happy, Christa Cloud and husband, William, all of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Raffie Gue; great-nephews, Josh, Sam and Nick Ruth, Josh Cloud; ex-wife, Linda Gibson; close friends and family, along with his church family.

Memorial service was held Saturday, October 2, 2004, at Clavary Baptist Church with the Rev. Pete Thompson officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 3653 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane WV 25526.
