Robert Paul Jeffrey

Robert Paul Jeffrey, 80, of Barboursville died Thursday, Oct 28, 2004, in St Mary's Medical Center. He was born on July 11, 1924, on his family's home place. He was a member of Dillon Chapel United Methodist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He retired from the Cabell County Board of Education with 20 years of service. Paul was also a member of the Hilltop Sportsman Club and an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by his parents, Millard Filmore and Eula Dillon Jeffrey and brothers, Charles, Leo, Ray and Roy. Robert is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pauline Dial Jeffrey; daughter, Paula Jenkins and her husband, Don Jenkins, of Barboursville; sons, Robert W. Jeffrey of Huntington and Richard Jeffrey of Charleston; grandson, Roby W. Jeffrey of Barboursville; Andrew M. Jenkins and his wife, Courtney R. Jenkins, of Scott Depot W.Va.; grandson Mac Chapman of Morgantown, W.Va.; granddaughter, Rachel M. Jeffrey of Pittsburgh, Pa.; granddaughter, Ashley Jenkins-Miller and her husband, Michael G. Miller, of Pittsburgh; and great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Jenkins. He is also survived by four brothers, Vivian, Tom, Stacy and Jack Jeffrey, all of Barboursville; and one sister, Evelyn Eden of Barboursville. Services were held Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, W.Va., with the Rev. Michael Rowe and Tommy Jeffrey officiating; Burial followed in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Jewell Lewis

Ruby Jewell Lewis, 79, of Culloden went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, in Mariner Health of Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Gerry White officiating. Burial in Valley View Memorial Park. She was born July 9, 1925, in Hamlin, W.Va., a daughter of the late Lester and Bessie Roberts Young. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lewis, and one sister, Reba Sergeant. Ruby was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church. She is survived by four daughters, Arminta Wallace, Diana Callihan, Debra Diehl and Donna Jimison; two sons, Ronnie Lewis and Jennings Lewis; four sisters Jean Garrett, Crystal Lee “Tots” Adkins, Verna Moses and Janice Adkins; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Nancy Jane Skaggs

Nancy Jane Skaggs, 65, of Huntington went to be with her Lord Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at Henson Mortuary with her brother-in-law, the Rev. Fred Fudge officiating. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. She was born Jan. 18, 1939, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Handley F. and Bertie Black Kerns. She was a loving and beloved wife of 40 years to her husband, Roger M. Skaggs. She was a wonderful mother to her children who will love her always, daughter, Tina J. Skaggs of Cleveland, Tenn., and son, John David Skaggs of Huntington. She was a special mother-in-law to Julia Skaggs, wife of John David, and a precious grandmother to Jessica, Jenny and Jacob Skaggs. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, James H. and Lucille Kerns of Proctorville, Ohio; a special cousin, Bobby Kennedy of Huntington; and a host of nieces, nephews, brother and sisters-in-law and friends. She attended Grace Gospel Church, and a special thank-you goes to the church family for their love and support. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.. John E. Sparks

John E. Sparks, 80, of Barboursville, passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Jeff Sizemore. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. He was born Jan. 26, 1924 in Elliott County, a son of the late William Alfred and Mary Jane Creech Sparks. John received the Purple Heart during World War II while serving on the USS Birmingham in the South Pacific. He was life member of DAV Chapter 52, AM Vets #14, American Legion Post #16 and the VFW #1064. John volunteered as a driver for the DAV until his health no longer allowed. He loved the Lord and was a member of Bloomingdale-Salem Baptist Church. John left his life peacefully, and he will be sadly missed by loving friends, neighbors and family. All will remember the hospitality he showed to whomever he hosted in his home. He is survived by his loving wife, Katherine “Katy” Harless Spaeks; daughter and son-in-law, Marti and Phillip Unrue; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Cindy Sparks, all of Greenwood, S.C; three grandchildren April, Matthew and Drew; two sisters, Jewell White of Westwood, Ky, and Hazel Hanner of Dayton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Rev. Herman H. McCallister

the Rev. Herman H. McCallister, 78, of Milton went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, Charleston. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Millard Morrison officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Lincoln County, W.Va., a son of the late Lonnie and Luna McCallister. He was also preceded in death by two brothers Cledith and Elvin McCallister; four grandchildren, Lisa Ann, Deanna Gail, Steven and Brian McCallister. He is survived by his wife, Ruth L McCallister, five sons and their spouses, Herman Jr. and Mary Beckett, James and Tammy McCallister, David and Mary McCallister, Mike and Susan McCallister and Herman G. and Christina McCallister; 10 grandchildren, Robert, Curt and Mark Beckett, David, Jamie, Stacy, Heather and Zack McCallister, Charity Conner and Shelley Bowles; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers; four sisters; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.. Rev. Hubert Vermont Ball

The Rev. Hubert Vermont Ball, 89, went to be with the Lord Oct. 26, 2004 at Hubbard Hospice House after a short illness. Hubert was born February 27, 1915, a son of the late Elizbabeth Frances (Fannie) Nicholas Ball and Otta Ball of Milton, WV. As a pastor with over 50 years of service, he ministered to several Church of God churches. He retired from Union Carbide after 34 years of service and was a longtime resident of St. Albans. Hubert was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Evaleen Ball; and his daughter, Minna Lee Estep of Huntington. He was preceded in death by one sister Leona Vititoe; 2 brothers, Elmer Ball of Milton and Cecil Ball, killed in Korea. Hubert is survived by his three sons, Jerry Ball, Everett Dale Ball I and Lovell Francis Ball, all of St Albans; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters Opal Wooten of St. Albans and Delsie Neal of MIlton; 2 brothers Raymond Ball of Hurricane and Arlie (Bill) Ball of Milton. Services were held Friday, Oct. 29th, at Abney Street Church of God, St Albans, with the Rev. Jack Lawrence and the Rev. Arley Cravens officiating. Burial in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Gary Porter

Gary Porter, 64, of Davenport, Fla., formerly of Salt Rock, W.Va., passed away Sunday, October 17, 2004. He was a son of the late Gilbert and Ever Ross Porter. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Donovan, Cleedith, Keith, Sherrill and George Porter. He was of the Methodist faith. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine H. King Porter of Davenport; three daughters and son-in-law, Rebecca Carol and Don Taylor of Monument, Colo., and their children, Brandon, Cory, Duston; Debra Kay Hendrix of Davenport and her children, Elizabeth and Landon; and Shelly Denise and Leland Brown of Birmingham, Ala.; a twin brother, Greg Porter; a sister, Marie Porter Gue, both of Barboursville. Memorial services were conducted Saturday, October 30, 2004, at the Mt. Calvary Church, Salt Rock, by Pastor Ronnie Eplin. Arrangements by Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville.

Emzie Coleman Davis

Emzie Coleman Davis, graduated from this life to his heavenly home on Tuesday, October 26, 2004. His life of 84 years seemed to have passed by so quickly. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, October 30, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Buddie Mills officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Emzie was born February 9, 1920, to Milford and Maggie Davis of Milton. He was the eldest of 10 children. He retired from the C&O Shops in Barboursville as a laborer. He began his employment there in 1943. He liked farming and wearing his bib-overalls. He was a quiet person who never complained, yet enjoyed talking to anyone. He accepted Jesus as his Savior in November, 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Brown Washington ; two brothers, Lloyd Davis and Denvil Davis; and son-in-law, Wallace Ray Vance. He is survived by four sisters, Hazel Foster of Hamptonville, N.C., Pauline Bruner of Troy, Ohio, Emilee Good of Troy, Ohio and Helen Carpenter of Huntington; two brothers, Delbert Davis of Troy, Ohio and Richard Davis of Milton. Emzie and Maylener observed their 60th wedding anniversary March 21, 2004. To this union was born three children, Charlotte Vance of St. Albans, Shirley and husband Terry Hoffman of Nitro and Clifford Davis of Milton; three granddaughters, Tammy and husband Thomas Mahon of Huntington, Tonia and husband C.T. Carroll of Barboursville and Jessica Hoffman of Nitro; five great-grandchildren, Nicole Frye, Carmen Carroll and Natasha, David and Andrew Chapman; an aunt, Clara Gibson; three step grandchildren and former daughter-in-law, Linda Davis. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Louise Cox

Mary Louise Cox, 76, Ona, W.Va., went to be with Lord Monday, October 25, 2004. She passed away at her residence with her children by her side. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 28, 2004, Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. Mary was born August 12, 1928, in Huntington, a daughter the late Lewis Meeks and Margaret Craig. She was preceded in death her husband, Eli Cox and a daughter, Linda Vernett. She was survived by her three sons and two daughters-in-law, Richard Cox, Robert and Thelma Cox, all of Huntington and Floyd and Susie Cox of Ona, W.Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Robert Clay and Sue and Todd Forney, all of Huntington; a sister, Virginia Meeks of Huntington; 23 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. Mary was a member of Beulah Ann Missionary Baptist Church. She will be truly missed by everyone.

Terri Kay Nichols

Terri Kay Nichols, 48, of Buffalo died Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital. She was born in South Charleston and attended Weberwood Elementary, Spring Hill Junior High and South Charleston High schools. She served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was discharged in 1977 with an honorable discharge. She was a mother, daughter, sister and aunt.

Surviving: husband, Scott Henderson; children, Noah and Brittany; mother, Nancy Nichols; sisters, Brenda and Marsha; brothers, Nick, Charlie, Scott and Nathan; aunt, Linda Cole; cousin, Charles Gillenwater. Service was held Saturday, December 18, 2004, at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, with the Rev. Charles Goddard officiating. Burial was in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Louella Jean Muck

Louella Jean “Bachie” Muck, 73, of Eleanor died December 17, 2004, at home.

She was an eight year resident of Eleanor, formerly of Poca. She was a member of the Hometown Church of God Mission and former choir director of Lett Creek Community Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Addie Craigo, brother, Junior Craigo, and very special father-and mother-in-law, Fonce and Bertha Muck.

Surviving: her husband of 55 years, John R. “Bob” Muck; son and his wife, Johnnie D. and Barbara Muck of Scott Depot; brothers, Ferriel Craigo of Winfield and Buddy Craigo of Richfield, Ohio; sisters, Willadean Higginbotham of Poca and Betty Brick of Teays Valley; grandchildren, Kevin Muck and Denise Blake and husband, Gene, all of Scott Depot; great-grandchildren, C.J. and Reagan of Scott Depot; goddaughter, Pam Hill Rhodes of Poca.

Service was held Sunday, December 19, 2004, at Hometown Church of God Mission with pastors Darren Persinger, Jeff Pitchford and Michael Landers officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Kelly Dolin

Kelly Dolin, 90, of Poca died December 18, 2004.

He was retired from Avtex, a member of the Poca Baptist Church, past master of the Nitro Masonic Lodge No. 170 AF & AM, and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, York Rite and Beni Kedem Shrine.

Surviving: wife, Kathleen Dolin; brother, Cecil and wife, Cosettie Dolin of Poca.

Service was held Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Jim Butcher officiating and Masonic services conducted by the Nitro Masonic Lodge No. 170 AF & AM. Entombment was in the memory gardens. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Ramon F. Grady

Ramon F. Grady, 90, of Leon died December 17, 2004.

Service was held Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo.

James Thompson

James “Jim” Thompson, 80, of Hurricane died December 17, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Huntington.

Born September 16, 1924 in Winifrede, he was a son of the late William and Rachel Thompson. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, John and Carl Thompson, his granddaughter, Jenny Petry, and his great-granson, Samuel Patrick Singleton.

He was a retired conductor of the C & O Railroad with 37 years of service, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp diuring World War II. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Chelyan, where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher and loved to sing in the choir. He was currently attending Grace Bapist Temple, St. Albans.

Surviving: wife, Isabell; son, Bruce Thompson and wife, Cindy, of Nevada; daughter, Connie Petry and husband, Glenn, of Hurricane; sister, Margaret Brooks of Ohio; granddaughters, Rachel Singleton of Huntington and Jami Petry of Hurricane.

Service was held Monday, December 20, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor J. David Pence officiating. Entombment was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Memorial donations may be made to Grace Baptist Temple, Television Ministries, 1901 MacCorkle Avenue, St. Albans WV 25177.

Earl E. Wray Sr.

Earl Edward Wray Sr., 76, of Fraziers Bottom died December 17, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital.

Born June 19, 1928, he was a son of the late Worthy Edward and Emma Crist Wray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Earl E. Wray Jr. and Tommy Michael Wray.

He was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways, and was a lifelong resident of Putnam County.

Surviving: his wife of 50 years, Emilee V. Gibson Wray; children, Nondra Akers of Fraziers Bottom, Peggy Grant and Paulette Grant, both of Hurricane, Robert Wray and Pamela Erwin, both of Pliny, Ronnie Wray of Teays Valley, Tammy Grant of Shelby, North Carolina, and Rose Moore of Kings Mountain, North Carolina; brother, Glen Dale Wray of Delaware, Ohio; sisters, Mildred Powers, Emma Jean Davis, Marjorie Long and Wanbda Akers, all of Delaware, ohio; 28 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

Service was held Monday, December 20, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley. Biurial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom.

Betty Elizabeth Hoover

Betty Elizabeth Ann Smith Hoover, 72, of Winfield died Saturday, December 18, 2004, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.

Betty was preceded in death by her husand, Ernest C. Hoover, and her parents, Wyatt H. and Virginia Elam Smith.

Surviving: sons, Rick Martin of High Point, North Carolina and Fred Hedrick of Houston, Texas ; sisters, Jean Maddox of St. Albans, Ruth Webb of Winfield, and Donna Sheets of Weidman, Michigan; granddaughter, Jennifer Hedrick.

Private funeral services were held. Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1101 Kennawa Drive, Charleston WV.
