Vernon “Rusty” Adkins

Vernon “Rusty” Adkins, 83, of Huntington, formerly of Beavercreek, Ohio, passed away December 4, 2004. He was born July 10, 1921, in Wayne County, West Virginia, a son of the late Ottie Sharp and Rosa Myrtle Bowen Adkins. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Iris Lea Wood Adkins; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Wichman Hager and Harry L. Hager of Barboursville and Jeanne Strottner and Lt. Col. (Ret) Phillip Strottner of San Antonio, Texas ; grandchildren, Brandon Wichman and his wife Alice and their children Savannah Wichman and Grace Wichman, Shannon Wichman and his wife, Anne, and Patrick Strottner and his fiancee, Michelle Rosfeld; and one brother, Ottie Adkins Jr. of Huntington. Private funeral services will be held at a later date. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Freda Mae Jenkins

Freda Mae Jenkins, 58, of Huntington, went to rest with the Lord Sunday, December 5, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Hobb Crabtree. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. She was born July 20, 1946, in Wayne County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late James and Rethel Lester Watts. She was retired from Corbins. She is survived by three brothers, Billy Joe Damron and his wife, Tracy, of Milton, Dennis Watts of Kenova, and Rickie L. Watts of Indiana; six sisters and their spouses, Letia Gay Plybon of Lavalette, Sue and David Mullins of Kenova, Nora Linda and Edgar Plybon of Wayne, Brenda and Gary Adkins of Cleveland, Cheryl Naundra and Jerry Waugh of Culloden, and Sonja and Richard McKenzie of Ravenswood, her fiance, Robert L. Sisson of Huntington; and several nieces and nephews.

Lovie Ora Persinger

Lovie Ora Persinger, 75, of Milton, widow of Carl Lester Persinger, died Monday, December 6, 2004 in Putnam General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 9, 2004 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Culloden Cemetery.

William B. “Bill” Mount

William B. “Bill” Mount, 89, of passed away Monday, December 6, 2004, in Mariner Healthcare of Huntington. Funeral service were conducted Thursday, December 9, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Donnie Spurlock officiating. Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery. He was born March 10, 1915, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late James P. and Ida May Paxton Mount. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Clary Mount; daughter, Janice Smith; four brothers and one sister. He is survived by his daughter, Jo-Ann Merritt of Salt Rock; four grandchildren, Monica Brian, Dorothy and Charlie; four great-grandchildren Devon, Destiny, Sarah and Little Charlie; two brothers, James L. Mount and Raymond R. Mount, both of Glenwood; and two sisters, Oweva Mae Clary of Glenwood and Genevive Spurlock of Scottown, Ohio.

Freda Juanita Davis Smith

Freda Juanita Davis Smith, 84, of Huntington died December 4, 2004, at her home. A lifelong resident of Huntington, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Carl Sumner Davis and Lena Berry Davis, and the widow of Everett R. Smith. She was also preceded in death by a half brother, Raymond Davis. She was born March 2, 1920, in Huntington. Mrs. Smith was a of Central United Methodist Church and an active member of the Barboursville Senior Citizens. She retired from Owens-Illinois of Huntington where she worked for 30 years. She was active in the Democratic Party and a member of the Rebekahs. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Smith Johnson of Huntington and Judy Smith Curtis and Harry Curtis of Easley, S.C.; and three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson of Slattington, Pa., and DaJuan “DJ” Curtis and Taylor Blair Curtis, both of Easley, S.C. Funeral services were conducted on Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Kevin Lance. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Harold “Bud” Miller, 85, of Scott Depot died December 5, 2004, at his home in Hudson, Florida.

He was retired from the Boiler Makers Union Local No. 667 in Winfield, a member of the Cross Lanes United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Hudson. He was also a member of the Nitro Moose Lodge.

Surviving: wife, Beatrice B. McLane Miller; cousins, Jack Miller of Teays Valley and Bill Miller of Dunbar; other relatives and host of friends.

Service was held Friday, December 10, 2004, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Dr. Gregory Hayes and George Webb officiating. Entombment was at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Dempsey D. Boggess

Dempsey David Boggess, 68, of Scott Depot died December 10, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital.

Born September 5, 1936 in Scott Depot, he was a son of the late David Rector and Betty Rebecca Lamb Boggess. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Judith Collbaugh.

He retired from Union Carbide, Institute plant, and was a lifelong resident of Putnam County. He served in the U.S. Air Force during non-wartime sevice.

Surviving: sons, Jody and Jimmy Boggess; sister, Doris Campbell of Charleston; brothers, Charles W. Boggess and Ted Boggess, both of Scott Depot.

Service was held Monday, December 13, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Teays Valley Memorial Gardens, Winfield.

Sandra Kay Worley

Sandra Kay Worley, 66, of Hurricane died December 9, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital.

Born December 19, 1937 in Hurricane, she was the daughter of the late Russell Dewey and Lula mar Hawthorne Turner. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Bessie Whitten and Eloise Bledsoe.

Surviving: husband, Carl R. Worley; sisters, Mary Lou Salmons of Barboursville, Karen Hughes of Culloden and Sharon Morris of Hurricane; brothers, James M. Turner of Huntington, Darrell E. Turner of Dayton, Ohio, Dale Turner of Parkersburg, and Robert H. Turner of Lebanon, Tennessee.

Service was held Sunday, December 12, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Greg Hudson officiating. Burial was in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington.

Wilma “Maw” Ross Keyser

Wilma “Maw” Ross Keyser, 90, went to be with her Lord to the place He's been preparing for her, Tuesday, December 7, 2004. Funeral service were conducted at 11 am.. Friday, December 10, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Minister David Templeton. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born December 27, 1913, in Salt Rock, a daughter of the late Lee and Vilora Parsons Ross. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd “John” Keyser; two sisters, Elsie Lucas and Ever Stephens; and two brothers, Hersel Ross and Eldon Ross. She was a faithful member of Merritts Creek Church of Christ for more than 52 years. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Myra and Eric Labus of Salt Rock, her beloved grandson John Michael Labus; one sister, Naomi Keyser of Salt Rock and three sisters-in-law, Halsie and Ruth Ross of Salt Rock, and Alfreeda Copen of Huntington. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends and church family. The family would like to extend a special thanks and appreciation to her special caregiver, Patty Police, for her care during her final days.

Erin Christine Galvin

Erin Christine Galvin, 4, of South Point, Ohio, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was born Feb. 26, 2000, in Huntington, a daughter of Chris and Dwanetta Wilfong Galvin of South Point. Also surviving are sister, Tember Galvin at home; maternal grandparents, Andy and Brenda Wilfong of Barboursville; and paternal grandparents, John and Connie Galvin of Ironton. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Henson Mortuary with the Rev. Paul Meadows officiating; burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington.

Morgan Stephen Goff

Morgan Stephen Goff, 42, of Barboursville died Wednesday, December 8, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 13, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, W.Va.; burial in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Tornado, W.Va.

Mrs. Arlie Goodall

Mrs. Arlie Goodall, 87, of Barboursville, W.Va., widow of Carl H. Goodall, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, in Chateau Grove Assisted Living Center, Barboursville. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, WV, with Pastor Fred Ramey officiating. Entombment in Ridgelawn Abbey of Devotion, Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. She was born July 5, 1917, in Putnam County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Okey and Hattie Parkins. She was retired from Boeing Aviation. She resided in Granada Hills, Calif. for 45 years before returning to Huntington in 1995. In addition to her husband and she was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Parkins. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Shirlene Jenkins of Barboursville; stepson, Jack Goodall of Huntington; brother, Noel Parkins of Monterey, Calif.; seven step-grandchildren; and her caregivers at Chateau Grove, with whom her family will be eternally grateful.

Glenn W. Mehltretter

Glenn W. Mehltretter, 85, of Huntington went to be the with Lord Friday, Dec. 10, 2004. Funeral mass was held Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at Our Lady of Fatima Church by Father Jim Sobus. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. He was born March 20, 1919, in Bayonne, N.J., a son of the late John and Gertrude Whalen Mehltretter He was also preceded in death by one brother, Wilson Mehltretter. He was a retired executive vice-president at International Nickel Co. after 45 years of service. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and was instrumental in the growth and expansion of Camp Louis in Dover, N.J. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, an ex-member of the Stardust Dance Club in Huntington and a member and past president of Rotary International in New Jersey. He was a graduate of Newark College of Engineering with a BSME and was employed on the Manhattan Project. He was an avid fisherman who made semi-annual fishing trips to the North Carolina coast and he enjoyed golf and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Eileen Carroll Mehltretter; one son, Glenn Mehltretter and his wife, Betsy-Jo, of Raleigh N.C.; two brothers, Jack Mehltretter of Florida and Jim Mehltretter of North Carolina; one sister, Joan Kontje of California; three grandchildren, Heidi Sneath and her husband, David, Glenn William Mehltretter III and his wife, Darlene and Daniel Mehltretter, and three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ashley Mehltretter and Sarah Sneath. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington.

Carroll Workman

Carroll Workman, 84, of Huntington, husband of Mary Spurlock went to be with his Lord Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born Dec. 13, 1919, in Huntington, a son of the late John and Mollie Hale Workman. He was retired from CSX and a longtime member of Cross Roads United Methodist Church. Also surviving are two sons and daughter-in-law, William and Kitty Workman of Seminole, Fla., and John and Sue Workman of Huntington; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Roy Paxton of Lakeland, Fla.; brother, Clyde Workman of Huntington; seven grandchildren, Billy and Darrell Workman, John Michael Workman, Sarah Ross and Steven, Jamie and Annette; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Cross Roads United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tim Halloran. Henson Mortuary, was in charge of arrangements.

John Wells

John Wells, 91, of Huntington passed away Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 in Heartland of Riverview. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Don Wheeler. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Feb. 17, 1913, in Morehead, Ky., a son of the late Willie and Phoebe Wells. He was a retired employee of INCO. He was preceded in death by his wife, Garnet Starkey Wells. He is survived by his daughter and one son-in-law, Darlene and Joe Rukse of Barbourville; one son, Mark Wells of Huntington; one sister, Irene Sprague of Marietta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Brooklynn Rukse, Justin Rukse and his fiancee, Molly Garvie, and Shelby Wells and two great-grandchildren, Amelia Garvie Rukse and Josie Garvie Rukse.

Ida Lee Eastridge

Ida Lee Null Eastridge, 76, of Liberty, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, died November 27, 2004, at home.

She was a former member of The Christian Church and of TOPS in Hurricane.

Surviving: husband, Mason; children, Terry Adams of Angola, Indiana and Ronald Eastridge of Parkman, Ohio; sisters, Pauline Perkins of Daniels and Bertha Booth of Eleanor; brothers, Eugene Null of Hometown and Leonard Null of Linesville, Pennsylvania ; grandchildren, Kristy, Laurie, Brian, Greg, Brad, Chip, and Scott; five great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was held Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, North Olmsted, Ohio. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Luther Lee Adkins

Luther Lee Adkins, 79, of Hurricane died November 30, 2004, at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston.

He was a retired maintenance foreman from Southern Ohio Coal Company and a former employee of Union Carbide, South Charleston, with 16 years of service. He attended Hurricane Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Olive Meeks Adkins.

Surviving: wife, Frances Wick Adkins; daughters, Delores “Sissy” Childers of Hurricane, Sandra Hanshaw of Eleanor, Alice Tickle of Tennessee, Carol Adkins of New Jersey, Debbie Vreeland of St. Albans, and Betty Araj of Georgia; sons, Leonard “Junior” Adkins of Pt. Pleasant, Steve Briscoe of Scott Depot and James Briscoe of Los Angeles, California; sister, Blanche Womack of St. Albans; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.

Service was held Friday, December 3, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Walter Allen and the Rev. Bruce Young officiating. Burial was in Lawrence Cemetery, Scott Depot.

Kevin G. Welch

Kevin G. Welch, 45, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Poca, died Sunday, November 14, 2004, in St. Mary's Hospital in Arizona after a long illness.

He was a member of the Nitro Moose Lodge and an avid bowler.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha M. Welch.

Surviving: father and stepmother, Paul Sr. and Frances Welch of Teays Valley; sisters, Bobbie Courtois of Main and Bonnie Kimmons of Florida; brothers, Paul Jr. of Nitro, Troy, Travis and Terry, all of New Hampshire; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Thursday, December 2, 2004, at People's Baptist Church, Scott Depot. A graveside service was held Friday, December 3, 2004, at Teays Valley Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Peter Faulkner officiating.
