Jeane B. Messinger

Jeane B. Messinger, 73, of Huntington, WV, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born December 2, 1931, in Huntington, W.Va, a daughter of the late Carl L and Lennie R. Byrd Baumgardner. A son, Karl Stephen Saunders, also preceded her in death. Jeane graduated from Marshall University with a Bachelor's Degree in English and a Master's Degree in History. She retired after teaching for more than 40 years for the Cabell County Board of Education, having taught at West Junior High School and Huntington East High School. She was an avid animal lover, especially her beloved dog, Justin. She was very patriotic and was a staunch member of the Republican Party. Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law, Kelly Messinger-King and Stephen L. King, of Gahanna, Ohio; a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Raben K Crisel of Huntington; a niece and her husband, Angela and Wesley Thacker of Huntington; a great-niece, Amanda Thacker; and her best friend, Mary Wisinsky of Huntington. Funeral services were held 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2005, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with the Rev. Leigh A. Fuller, S.J., officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park.

David Christopher Rose

David Christopher Rose, 39, of Barboursville, died Thursday, March 17, 2005 at home. Funeral 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 22nd, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in Neal Cemetery, Milton.

Darrell Allen Tooley

Darrell Allen Tooley, 43, of Barboursville, passed away Friday, March 18, 2005, at St Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2005 at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev.. Leonard Cremeans. Burial in Tooley Cemetery. He was born March 15, 1962, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of Elizabeth Adkins Tooley of Barboursville and the late Bill Tooley. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Austin and Charlotte Woodall. He was a former employee of Special Metals. He is survived by one daughter, Jessie Tooley of Huntington; his ex-wife and still best friend, Annette Tooley; three sisters, Shirlyn Franko of Independence, Ohio, Debbie Albright of Barboursville and Kathy Hunt of Kenova; three brothers, Bub Tooley and J.R. Tooley, both of Barboursville and Carl Tooley of Chesapeake, Ohio. The family would like to give a special thanks to Bill Barnhart. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Lessie Marie Mays

Lessie Marie Mays, 75, of Huntington, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Ray Adkins. Burial in Ramsey Cemetery. She was born August 13, 1929, in Wayne County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Jennings and Nora Ramsey Adkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Mays, and a son, Lonnie Dale Mays. She was retired from American National Rubber and was a member of Charity United Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jackie (Karen) Keesee of Lavalette and Patsy Keesee of Huntington; two sisters, Janet Adkins of East Lynn and Deloris Lewis of Huntington; one brother, Guy Adkins of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Opal Johnson Payton Ellis

Ppal Johnson Payton Ellis, 80, of Huntington, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2005, in the Saint Mary's Medical Center. She was born November 12, 1924, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Ishmael and Ella Morrison Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Ellis, Jr., and two brothers, Clinton Johnson and lshmael Junior Johnson and two sisters, Ruby Johnson and Frances Vititoe. She is survived by a son, James Payton and his wife, Lois, of Evansville, Indiana, and three sisters Hattie Vititoe of Ona, Halsy Payton and Clodene Stratton both of Milton, Three sisters-in-law, Oma Johnson of Milton, Wilma Johnson of Rockport, and Peggy Cremeans of Huntington; two grandchildren, Jeff Payton of Evansville, Indiana, and Kim Hutchison of Laurel Springs, New Jersey; five great grandchildren, Amy Payton of Philadelphia, Sarah Payton and Michael Payton both of Evansville, and Natalie Hutchison and Ryan Hutchison both of Laurel Springs, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She was a member of the Balls Gap Baptist Church. She retired from Marshall University. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 13, 2005, at the Ferrell Funeral Home, Huntington, followed by graveside service at Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family wishes to express their sincere heartfelt thanks to Peggy Cremeans for her loving care.

Bobby Ray Chafin

Bobby Ray Chafin, 48, of Salt Rock,, W.Va, husband of Paula Wells Chafin, passed away Monday March 14, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2005, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Ernie Ritchie officiating. Graveside services were held at the Warfield, Ky. Cemetery Friday, where burial followed. He was born November 30,1956, at Paintsville, Ky, a son of Goldie Preece Meade of Huntington, and the late Will Chafin. He was an employee of Pro-Care Nursing. In addition to his father, he also was preceded in death by a brother, Harlan Ray Chafin. Additional survivors include a daughter Crystal Chafin; a son Jason Chafin of Warfield, Ky.; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Bellomy of Huntington; three sisters, Elizabeth Scott of Dandridge, Tenn., Linda Brewer of Kitts Hill Ohio, and Janet Meade of Inez, Ky.; a stepsister, Magde Varney of Spencer, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, including Jacob Bellomy, Ayla Schafer, Stephanie Vargo, Angel Vargo and Steven Vargo III, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Carl “Andy” Hysell Sr.

Carl “Andy” Hysell Sr., 71, of Milton passed away Monday, March 14, 2005 at his son, Randy's residence. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 17, 2005 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in Milton Cemetery. He was born November 11, 1933, a son of the late Buster and Ella Harshbarger Hysell. He was also preceded in death by his son, Walter O'dell Hysell; two brothers, Junior Hysell and Walter “Okey” Hysell and a nephew, Walter “P.J.” Hysell. He is survived by three sons, Randy “Tootie” Hysell, Carl Hysell, Jr. and Harold Hysell, all of Milton; two daughters, Andrea Hatfield of Milton and Debbie Black of Huntington; three brothers, Richard Hysell, Sr., and Darrell Hysell, Sr., both of Milton and Mike Hysell of Culloden; one sister, Joyce Hayes of Milton; five half sisters, Dreama Tackett of Milton, Ann Hand of South Carolina, Deven Clagg and Kay Hysell, both of Ona and Karen Hicks of Huntington; two half brothers, Buster Hysell and James Hysell, both of Milton; 17 grandchildren, Leigha, Hannah, Gabrielle, Carl, Kayla, Cristy, Robert, Katlyn, Walter, Chandra, Brienna, Joshua, Gavin, Randy II, Cameron, Hayleigh and Anthony; special friends, Sue Laverty, Michelle Hysell, Anita Dean, Marcie Sizemore and Jennifer Dean; and 41 nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Buster Hysell, Pete Ruby, Clayton Vaughan, Kreg Hysell, Eddie Jackson and Randy Hysell II.

Beulah Marie Hicks Powell

Beulah Marie Hicks Powell, 79 of Huntington, formerly of Milton, widow of Arthur L. “Bill” Powell left this world Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center to walk free of pain and suffering with her Lord and Savior. Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 18, 2005, at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Tracy Mills and the Rev Buddie Mills officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park Milton. Beulah was born October 5, 1925, in Huntington a daughter of the late Oscar Lee and Lula Victoria Searls Hicks. She is also preceded in death by her son, Rodger Keith Powell; two brothers, John and Fremont Hicks; two sisters, Elsie Hays and Juanita Templeton. She is retired from Corbin Limited with 35 years of service. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and former adult Sunday School Teacher. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Susie Powell of Barboursville and David and Nancy Powell of Ona; one daughter and son-in-law, Angela “Susie” and Scott Evans of Huntington; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Clarence and Irene Hicks and Betty Hicks; two sisters, Mola Ashworth and Theresa Lewis; eight grandchildren, Alisa and Jim Sizemore, Kelli and Chad Clark, Ami Powell and fiance, Cory Richardson, Heather, Brittani and Victoria Evans, Barbie and Brian Muller, Beth and Keith Chapman; eight great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Tyler Cook, Brooklyn Sizemore, McKenna and Alex Clark, Emilie McClellan, Andy Black and Carter Chapman. Heck Funeral Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Sue A. Messinger

Sue A. Messinger, 59, of Ona, W.Va., went home to be with her Lord on March 14, 2005, at her home. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 17, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Larry Sanders, the Rev. Joe Dolen and the Rev. Timothy Messinger. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born November 10, 1945, in Huntington. She was a faith member of the Good Shepherd Free Will Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Roger Messinger of Ona; her children, Julie Adkins and her husband, Bryan, of Huntington, James Panell and friend Crystal Breubaker of Huntington, and Timothy Messinger and his wife, Kandi of Ona; also surviving are her mother and stepfather, Mildred Darst Dennison and John Dennison; seven grandchildren and the four Breubaker children and a host of nieces and nephews and friends. Sue was also the lead singer for the Family Circle Quartet for 24 years.

Renzy Scarberry

Renzy Scarberry, 73, of Lesage, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 17, 2005, by the Rev. Jimmy Dailey and the Rev. Gordon Rutherford at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery. He was born March 2, 1932, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Fred Scarberry and Anna Blake Scarberry Jeffers. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Beverly Sue Dailey; four sisters, Alice Williamson, Ruth Kinder, Naomi Henry and Laura Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Belva Colleen Scarberry; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and David Winters of Lesage; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Tina Scarberry of Enon, Ohio; Randy and Debby Scarberry of Lesage; one sister, Phyllis Jean Shumaker of Huntington; three brothers, Ellery Scarberry of Salt Rock, Roger Scarberry of Milton and Eddie Jeffers of Barboursville; six grandchildren, Adam Scarberry, Myra Dailey, Monica Vanscoy, Heather Steele and Jason and Andrew Scarberry; and six great-grandchildren.

Moss Adkins, Jr.

Moss Adkins Jr., 83, of Huntington passed away Monday, March 14, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Minister Emual Adkins, Minister Delmer Adkins and the Rev. Ray Vance. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. He was born May 14, 1921, in East Lynn, W.Va., a son of the late Moss and Nora Adkins. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Ruth Sword Adkins; three brothers, Wilson, Emis and Emmitt Adkins and three sisters, Tooley, Orpha Adkins and Ada Adkins. He was a retired self-employed carpenter. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Merritte Adkins; two sons, Robert Adkins and his wife, Whiz, of Victoria, Texas , and Phillip Adkins of Florida; four stepchildren, Debra Adkins and her husband, Hallie, of Pineville, W.Va., Billy Merritt and his wife, Teresa, of Cleveland, Ohio, Robert Adkins and his wife, Sherry, of West Hamlin and Jimmy Adkins and his wife, Freda, of West Hamlin; two grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and two special friends, Roy Nicely and Hughie Adkins. The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice of Huntington, Darrell Wooten and Dr. Robert Turner.

Anthony Blake Lott

Anthony Blake Lott, 30, of Culloden, W.Va., died March 12, 2005, at his home. Born June 6, 1974, in South Charleston, W.Va., he is the son of Tony and Linda Lott of Culloden. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James Dunn and Blake and Lee Lott and uncles, Larry Dunn and David Lott. Anthony loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time hunting, fishing and fourwheeling. He was a member of the Iron Workers Union Local #301, Charleston, W.Va. Also surviving are his wife, Leslie Keaton Lott; his children, Tiffany and Brittany Lott, both at home; his sister, Kelly Pauley and her daughter Sarah of Hurricane, W.Va.; his favorite and only sister-in-law, Anita Johnson; his niece, Courtney Johnson and nephews, Alex Johnson and Todd Keaton; his grandmother, Donna Dunn of Culloden; his best friend and extra brother, John Setliff of Red House, W.Va., and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Services were held Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. David Vickers officiating. Burial in Fraziers Bottom United Methodist Church Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom, W.Va.

Dovie Eloise Wallace

Dovie Eloise Wallace, 67, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 13, 2005, St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 16, 2006, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Vernon Wallace Jr. officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born April 17, 1937, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Lula Clagg Nibert. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Culvy Ivan Wallace Jr.; one granddaughter, Jasmine Michelle Carter; and one brother, Elbert “Fats” Nibert. She attended Mason Street Baptist Church, Milton. She is survived by three sons, Johnny Cobern and Steven Ivan Wallace, both of Milton, and Rick and Myrtle Coben of Proctorville, Ohio; six daughters, Cathy and Tommy Chinn of Huntington, Debra Hassie and Delbert Adkins of Milton, Sandra and Kenneth New of Hamlin, Leshie and Chuck Smith of Ashland, Ky., Angie and Greg Carter of Barboursville and Kim Keaton and Pojo Kirby of Barboursville; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters; and three brothers.

John L. Summers

John L. Summers, 79 of Winfield died March 10, 2005, at Valley Center, South Charleston.

Born June 18, 1925, in Pliny, he was the son of the late Guy Webster and Ruby Jewell DeVore Summers. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Cora Lee Summers; and his sister, Este Legue.

John was retired from Union Carbide Corporation with 36 years of service and was a member of Winfield Baptist Church. He was a member of Kanawha Valley Masonic Lodge 36 AF&AM, Buffalo, and the Scottish Rite Bodies and Beni Kedem Shrine, Charleston. He served his country during World War II as a gunner's mate on the USS Paine with the United States Navy.

Surviving are his son and his wife, John Lynn and Terri Summers of Winfield; his daughters and their husbands, Emily and Larry Stover of Winfield, Nancy and Thomas Reishman of Hurricane; his sisters, Garnett Shawkins of South Charleston and Mae Payne; his brothers, Harold and James Melvin “Pip” Summers, both of Winfield; his grandchildren, Clay and Jill Stover, John Stover, Wayne and Allison Reishman, Zan and Samuel Summers.

Services were held Saturday, March 12, at Winfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug McComas officiating. Burial with Masonic rites in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, was in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Vandevender

Samuel Vandevender, 66, of Hurricane died March 10, 2005. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.

Franklin Dee Johnson

Mr. Franklin Dee Johnson, 70, of Newberry, Fla., formerly of Hurricane, W.Va., passed away March 7, 2005, at Hospice of the Tri-Counties, Chiefland, Fla.

He was a farmer, a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Hurricane, and a six-year resident of Florida.

Surviving are his wife of 51-1/2 years, Betty A. Johnson; sons, Franklin E. Johnson and his wife, Mary, of Hurricane, Scott Johnson and his wife, Lori, of Newberry, Fla.; grandchildren, Ashley, Alyssa, John Dee, Scott, and Gregory; sisters, Imogene, Eunita, and Priscilla; and brothers, James, Steve, and Jerry.

Services were held Saturday, March 12 at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Hurricane with the Rev. Gerry White officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangments. Online condolences may also be made at www.chapmanfuneralhomes.com.

Thurman Lon Johnson

Thurman Lon Johnson, 77, of Hurricane went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 9, 2005, peacefully at his residence.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 12, at Antioch Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Davis and Pastor Daniel Beavers officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Ball, Albert Lewis, Gene Hodge, Harry Hixenbaugh, Boyd Meadows, Jim Hill, Don Barton, Jerry Templeton and Jim Morrison.

Thurman was born April 23, 1927, in West Hamlin, Lincoln County, a son of the late Albert .and Cora McCallister Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Irene Johnson; daughter, Bobbie Freeman; and two brothers, Albert Jr. and Ellihue.

He was a member of the Barboursville Masonic Lodge and spent a lifetime in the wholesale and retail grocery business.

He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Connie of Hurricane, Steve and Faith, Marty and Frances, and Craig and Jean Ann, all of Barboursville; one daughter, Donna Evans of Beckley; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dave and Maude Johnson of Martha and Glen and Judy Johnson of Ona; two sisters, Ruby Chapman of Salt Rock and Renee and Lawrence Vance of Hurricane; 17 grandchildren, Anissa Dunbar, Nikki Watts, Randi and J.R. Shull, Ryan Johnson, Michelle White , Cheri Call, Kelli Newsome, Adam Johnson, Evan and Lisa Johnson, Adria Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Derek Johnson, Morgan Johnson, Josh Evans, Zack Evans, Alyssa Evans and Leanne Freeman;

nine great-grandchildren, Mikyle White , Austin Morrison, Ethan Todd, Kelsie Call, Christia Watts, Jordon Watts, Bryce Watts, Shaylen Dunbar and Nicholas Dunbar; three very loving caregivers, David Nibert, Marilyn Kirby and Janie Smith; a host of nieces, nephews and family; and his friends from Granny K's “Table of Knowledge”.

Heck Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alma O. Eads

Mrs. Alma O. Eads of Poca, formerly of Ohley, entered this world on Jan. 16, 1913. She went to be with the Lord on March 8, 2005.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Louise Vance; her husband of 64 years, Lawrence C. “Hoppy” Eads; and two sons, Jack and Darrell Eads.

She is survived by seven children and their spouses, Ruth and Ralph Mezzoni of Mount Sidney, Va., Harry and Marnell Eads of Stratford, Conn., Susan Eads, wife of Jack, of Milford, Conn., Barbara and Robert Petry of Chelyan, Maxine and Jimmie Vance of Davin, Carol Eads, wife of Darrell, of Rocky Fork, Sandra and Charles Howsare of Handley, Janet and Thomas Zerbe of Dunbar and Corrine and David Scott of Poca; 28 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and loving friend and caregiver, Dorothy Holloway.

Special thanks goes to Dr. Viradia and staff and to Kanawha Hospice Care.

Alma was a Christian. She attended Handley Church of the Nazarene and was baptized in the Lord.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 11, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bernard Toppings officiating. Burial in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
