Catherine K. “Kate” Lemley

Catherine K. “Kate” Lemley, 82, of Milton went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 14, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Forest Memorial Park Mausoleum, Milton, with Pastor Mark Finley officiating. She was born October 8, 1922 in Ona, W.Va., a daughter of the late John and Sally Adams Casey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Pearl E. Lemley; eight sisters and nine brothers. Mrs. Lemley was a Baptist by faith. She is survived by two sons and daughter in-law, Jerry and Kay Lemley and Mike and Bev Lemley, all of Milton; three grandchildren, Don Lemley and his wife Ronda, Mike Lemley Jr. and his wife, Jamie, and Josh Lemley all of Milton; two great-granddaughters, Doni and Kasey Lemley and several nieces and nephews. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Louis Lemuel “Bud” Childers

Louis Lemuel “Bud” Childers, 71, of Barboursville, went to be with the Lord Sunday, February 13, 2005. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, February 17, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Pastor James Jobe and Pastor Kim Stone. Burial in Maupin Cemetery. He was born March 15, 1933, in Milton, W.Va., a son of the late John L. and Nellie Mae Bowyer Childers. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Donat. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Black Childers, three daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Darrell Spurlock and Robin and Tim Johnson of Barboursville, Ann and Henry Swann of Milton; one son and daughter-in-law, Buddy and Stephanie Childers of Barboursville; a stepson, Mike Ruyf and his wife, Loetta, of Joplin, Mo.; 10 grandchildren, Lee Adkins, Marty Adkins, Timothy Johnson, Travis Swann, Alex Childers, Johnathon Childers, Sarah Swann, Kailey Childers, Madison Johnson and Tristen John Childers; one great-grandchild, Courtney Adkins; one brother and sister-in-law, Carl E. “Duke” and Anna Jean Childers of Barboursville; one sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Leroy Humphrey of Sanford, Fla.; and a host of family and friends.

Jerry S. Roberts

Jerry S Roberts, 66, of Scottsdale, AZ (formerly of Milton, WV) passed away Feb. 14, 2005 at Hospice of the Valley in Scottsdale, AZ, after a long illness at home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ford and Gladys Roberts of Milton, WV. Jerry was an insurance agent in Milton, where his family resided until 1966, when they moved to Scottsdale. He was employed at Motorola Semiconductor Inc. for 30 years and retired in 1996, due to illness. He is survived by Sue, his wife of 47 years; daughter Amy Garcia of San Diego, CA.; sons Tim of Mesa, AZ and Steve of Pine Top-Lakeside, AZ. He also had nine grandchildren, a brother James Roberts of Nitro, WV and an uncle Paul C. Simonton of Missouri. Services were held February 21, 2005 at Glass & Garden Community Church in Scottsdale, AZ.

Nina F. Briscoe

Nina Frances Bell Briscoe, 91, of Scott Depot died Monday, February 7, 2005, at Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.

In Nina's early years she was a salesperson for Children's Activity Magazine (now Highlights), mostly on the East Coast. She also held numerous jobs in the Maryland and Washington , D.C. areas. After retirement, she returned to West Virginia and married her childhood sweetheart, Ralph Briscoe.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Southern Bapitst Church, Scott Depot, where she had served as a trustee and Vacation Bible School worker, quilted the mission quilt on display at the church and was willing and able to help when the church needed her assistance. She was a member of Scott Depot Community Educational Outreach Service Club (formerly Scott Depot Extension Homemakers Club), and a member of the Eastern Star, Hurricane, She was a faithful visitor to the nursing homes with the Sam Henson Seniors Center. She was a very loving and endearing person to her family, church members and friends.

She was born December 22, 1913 in Teays Valley, the daughtrer of the late Emelus P. and Anna Hill Belle. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ezeriah F., James H., Arvil R., Ray L. and Hugh D. Bell, and sisters, Emma Bell Payne, Dicy D. Bell and Ruby J. Bell.

Surviving: husband, Ralph W. Briscoe; sisters, Lessie Bell Dilda of Frederick, Maryland and Threca Bell Long of Columbus, Ohio; stepdaughters and their husbands, Yvonne and Robert Freeman of Hurricane, LaDonna and Thomas Bateman of Niceville, Florida, Judy and James Miller of Knoxville, Tennessee, Pamela and John Lobert of Chicago, Illinois, Vickie and Robert Stratton of Erie, Pennsylvania ; 11 stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; 22 nephews and nieces.

Service was held Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Good Shepherd Southern Baptist Church with Pastor Kenneth Stidham and Associate Pastor Timothy Barnett officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Southern Baptist Church Building Fund, 15 Scott Lane, Scott Depot WV 25560.

Shirley A. Duff

Shirley A. Duff, 70, of Hurricane died Sunday, February 6, 2005, in St. Fancis Hospital, following a long illness.

She was born December 29, 1934 in Olcott, a daughter of the late Synda McClung and Conrad Pruden. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray S. Duff Jr., and son, Richard Scott Duff.

She worked as a telephone operator for C&P Telephone Company for 10 years. She was a dedicated homemaker for her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a member of Cross Lanes Baptist Church.

Surviving: daughter, Tina Renee Crawford of Tampa, Florida; sons, Randall Ray Duff of Raleigh, North Carolina and Kevin Conrad Duff of Proctorville, Ohio; grandchildren, Christina Lynette Crawford and Brandon Ray Crawford of Tampa and Dalton Christopher Duff of Proctorville; aunt and uncle, Barbara and Kelly Dean; special friends, Frankie, Jaque and Lucille; many other friends and neighbors.

Service was held Saturday, February 12, 2005, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Morton Estep officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Gayle L. Williamson

Gayle L. Williamson, 43, of Nitro died February 12, 2005, at home.

She was a graduate of St. Albans High School and a member of the Nitro Moose.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gary McEndree.

Surviving: husband, Robert “Fritz” Williamson; mother, Glenna McEndree of St. Albans; maternal grandmother and special friend, Bubble Anderson of Poca; children, Christie Duelley of Cross Lanes, Scott Duelley of Dunbar and T.J. Duelley and wife, Sarah, of Dunbar; sister, Gena Delong of South Charleston; grandchildren, Dillion Matthew, Daphane and Joe; two nieces.

Service was held Tuesday, February 15, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Harold “Skippy” Grueser Jr. officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Memorial donations may be made to the Poca Town Library.

Billy Joe Boggess

Billy Joe Boggess, 60, of Northport, Alabama, formerly of Bancroft and Jane Lew, died Friday, February 11, 2005, after a battle with cancer.

He was a 1963 graduate of Poca High School, an Air Force veteran, and a 30 year employee of Halliburton.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mae Ranson Cunningham, father, Clark Boggess, sisters, Virginia Gibbs and Martha Clinton, and brother, Willard Cunningham.

Surviving: wife, Sue Smallridge Boggess; son, David Shane Boggess; one grandson; sister, Janet Fisher of Poca; brother, Harold Cunningham of Manchester, Tennessee; several nieces, nephews and friends in West Virginia.

The family will hold a memorial service to be announced at a later date. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of information.

Treva Harold Clark

Treva Harold “Bo” Clark, 59, of Liberty died February 13, 2005, at home.

Surviving: sisters, Helen King of Poca, Donnie Landers of Fayetteville and Parthenia King of Buffalo; brother, Darrell Clark of Eleanor.

Service was held Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Willard Beller officiating. Burial was in Bailey Cemtery, Liberty.

Russell Lee Harris Sr.

Russell Lee Harris Sr. of Hurricane died Saturday, February 12, 2005, in Putnam General Hospital following a short illness.

He was formerly of Oak Hill, retired from Firestone Steel, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Charleston American Legion, and attended various churches in the area.

He was preceded in death by his adopted parents, Joseph and Clara Martin.

Surviving: his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Gillenwater Harris; son, Russell Lee Harris Jr. and his wife, Denise, of Romulus, Michigan; brother, Junior Harris of New York; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Service was held Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Scott Harris officiating. Burial was in High Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Oak Hill.

Shirley Lee Baker

Shirley Lee Baker, 67, of Huntington passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 12, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Minister Jeff Garrett. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born July 13, 1937, in Seth, W.Va., a daughter of the late George Marcus and Rosalee Belle Moore Lovejoy. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Marcus Lovejoy. She was a member of Norway Avenue Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Willard Wesley Baker; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret Ann and Chuck Kamin of Detroit, Mich., and Diana Gayle and Phil Manilla of Huntington; one son and daughter-in-law, Wesley George and Raetta Baker of Spencer, W.Va.; four sisters, Donna Fae Watts of Wilmington, N.C., Glenna Belle Rogers of Montgomery, W.Va., Georgia Waugh of Huntington, W.Va., and Janet Bowen of Ona, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Brandon, Eve, Elyse, Taylor and Kacy.

Ella Mae Edmonds

Mrs. Ella Mae Edmonds, 93, of Barboursville, widow of Lawrence Edmonds Sr., passed away Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at her residence. Funeral service were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Elder James Thomas officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park She was born Jan. 19,1912, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Henry Rubin and Martha Legg Jenkins. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses, Barboursville Congregation. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers; an infant son, Carl Edward Edmonds; and a son, William Blair Edmonds. She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Carrol Edmonds Jones of Barboursville; four sons, Boyd D. Edmonds and Uwell T. Edmonds, both of Barboursville, Lawrence Edmonds Jr. of Cory, Colo., and Herman R. Edmonds of Charleston, W.Va.; three sisters, Della Stevens of Teays Valley, W.Va., Iva Jenkins of Glenwood, W.Va., and Ida Black of Milton; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren Chapman's Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Pearl Cooper Hoover

Pearl Cooper Hoover, 79, of Barboursville passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005. Funeral services were conducted at 1 pm Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel Barboursville, by the Rev. Richard Black. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born Dec. 8,1925, in Orgas, W.Va., a daughter of the late Lonnie and Della Cooper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Hoover; one daughter, Susie Lundeby; and one brother, Anderson Cooper. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Shaun Gilliam of Barboursville; one son and daughter-in-law Steve and Aundria Hager of Lubbock, Texas ; three sisters, Lucille Supanski of Orgas, W.Va., Edna Mae Long of Woodbridge, Va., and Betty Jo Payne of Charleston, W.Va.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her two special four-legged friends, Pookie and Sydney, and a host of friends. Pallbearers were Terry Payne, Brad Rowe, David Mellert, Pat Blankenship, Chris Clagg and James Alberts. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington, P.O. Box 464, Huntington WV 25709.

Phyllis Parkins Marshall

Phyllis Parkins Marshall passed away peaceful on February 5, 2005. She was born in Milton, W.Va., and was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Myrtle Parkins; and a brother Fred Parkins. She is survived brothers, Dana (Helen) Parkins and family in Garden Grove, Calif., Forest Parkins and family of Hurricane, W.Va.; Richard (Allene) Parkins of Conway, Ark; and one sister, Carolyn Campbell (Jerry) and family of Ocean Isle Beach N.C. She is also survived by many wonderful friends, especially Jimetta and Lee Anderson, Mary Frances and Tommy Waugh and Moss White . She was a graduate of Marshall University where she earned a BA and MA. She retired from the University of South Florida (USF) after 34 years as the Director of the University Center. Of all the many honors she received, she was most proud that the Center was named “The Phyllis P. Marshall Center,: because it was an idea conceived of and followed through by students. Her many professional associations included USF Credit Union board member for over 20 years and an active member of the Athens Society. A memorial service will be held in the spring at the Phyllis P. Marshall Center at USF. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the USF Foundation, University of South Florida, 4202 East Fowler Ave., ALC, Tampa, FL 33620. They should be designated for the Phyllis P. Marshall Center. Her arrangements are being handled by Florida Mortuary Funeral & Cremation Services (813) 237-2900.
