Mary Carse

Mrs. Mary M. Carse, 80, of 1118 Ninth Street, Moundsville, died at 4:30 on last Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fonda Witz in Cleveland, Ohio where she had been visiting. Mrs. Carse had been seriously ill for three days. She had resided with her son Alden Carse at 1118 Ninth Street, Moundsville since 1934 and was formerly of Wick, Tyler County. She was a native of Monroe County, Ohio where she was born on October 5, 1852, a daughter of Seamer and Susan Nalley McKnight. Mrs. Carse was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church of Wick and the Order of Eastern Star at Middlebourne. Surviving are three sons, Alden of Moundsville; Clarence of Texas and Creel of Wick; one daughter, Mrs. Fonda Witz of Cleveland, Ohio and one brother, James McKnight of Conrath, Wis. A daughter Vesto O. Carse, died on May 11, 1937 and her husband died on November 20, 1939. The body was removed to the Riggs Funeral Home in Moundsville where it remained until Sunday at noon when it was taken to the Wick Methodist Church for funeral services at 2 p.m.; conducted by Rev. Frank A. Tinney, pastor of the Middlebourne U.B. Church. Burial was in Long's Cemetery at Wick. 1943

William Creel Carse

William Creel Carse, 75, of 131 Rexford St., Sistersville, died Thursday at home. He was a member of the East Street United Methodist Church, Middlebourne and a retired oilfield worker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Carse in 1973. Surviving are two sons, Carlton of Sistersville, Donald of Chula Vista, Calif., a brother, Alden Carse of Middlebourne; a sister, Fonda Weitz of Cleveland, Ohio; three grandchildren; a great granddaughter. Friends received at the Eckels Funeral Home, Sistersville, where services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville. Oct. 1978

James M. Cokeley

James M. Cokeley, 71, of Friendly, died Tuesday in St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg. He was a retired millwright on construction. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Jobes Cokeley; a son Nelson of Sistersville; a brother Russell of Friendly; a sister, Ruby Horwath of Holly Hill, Fla; six grandchildren. Friends received at the Eckels Funeral Home, Sistersville, where services held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23. Interment in Friendly cemetery.

Mrs. Lorena Crumrine

Mrs. Lorena Crumrine, Middlebourne, 83, of Main St. died Thursday morning at Sistersville General Hospital. She was born in Tyler County, a daughter of the late Everett and Clara Williamson. She was a member of the East Street United Methodist Church, Middlebourne Ruth Chapter No. 7, Order of the Eastern Star, Emily Rebekah of Middlebourne, and Middlebourne American Legion Auxiliary No. 48. She is survived by a son, Howard W. of Huntsville, Ala; a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Sarah) Jemison of Middlebourne, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert H. Crumrine, in 1961; and a daughter, Janice D. Crumrine. Friends received at the Goodwin Funeral Home in Middlebourne where services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday. Interment in Middlebourne Cemetery. July 1979

Alfred Dawson

Dawson Child Died Tuesday, Alfred Eugene Dawson 21 months old son of Crate Dawson died at the home of his grandparents, Mrs. Mollie Dawson near Josephs Mills Tuesday morning. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at Springhill church with burial being made in the Springhill Cemetery. The child is survived by its father and two months old sister. The child's mother died on the 21st of October.

Clate R. Dawson

Clate R. Dawson, 83, of Alma died Monday, June 1, 1992 at the Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville. He was born in Tyler County, a son of the late Harrison and Mollie Davis Dawson. He was retired employee of the timber industry. He was preceded in death by three brothers; four sisters; one grandson. Surviving are his wife, Gwallia Keys Dawson, three sons, Roy Dawson, Gary Dawson and Ronnie Dawson all of Alma; two daughters, Mrs. Steve {Linda} Brookover of Pennsboro and Mrs. Roger {Kathy} Griffin of Alma; one brother, Crate Dawson of Sistersville; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 4 at the Furbee Funeral Home, Alma, with Evangelist Paul Casebolt officiating. Interment followed in the Springhill Cemetery, Josephs Mills.

Crate R. Dawson

Crate R. Dawson: Alma- Crate R. Dawson, 88, of Pineview Continuous Care, Harrisville, formerly of Joseph's Mills and Sistersville, died March 10, 1997 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Tyler County a son of the late Harrison and Mollie Davis Dawson. He was an employee of the timber industry and a Methodist. Surviving are one son, Charles E. Dawson of Leesburg, Fla; two daughters, Naomi R. Noland of Sistersville and Virginia A. Goff of Leesburg; 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Alfred Dawson; one daughter, Juanita Dawson; four brothers; four sisters and one grandchild. Services 2 p.m. Wednesday, Furbee Funeral Home, Alma. Evangelist Roy Dawson officiating. Burial Springhill Cemetery, Joseph's Mills. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today.

Gary D.Dawson

Gary D. Dawson, Jr., 18, of Alma, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1987. He was a 1987 graduate of Tyler County High School. He was a member of the Army Reserve unit in New Martinsville and had received orders to report for active duty with the U.S. Army. Surviving are his parents, Gary D. and Rella Montgomery Dawson of Alma; a sister, Rella Sue Dawson at home; maternal grandparents, Ora and Bertha Montgomery of West Union; paternal grandparents, Clate and Gwallia Dawson of Alma; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 25 at Furbee Funeral Home, Alma. Burial in Springhill Cemetery, Joseph's Mills, WV with full military rites conducted by a detail from Ft. Knox, Ky.

James Oscar Dawson

James Oscar Dawson the eldest son of Harrison & Mollie Davis Daswon, was born 25 May 1894. He enlisted in the U.S. Army 19 Sept. 1914 & was discharged 22 July 1918 and was in training at Camp Lee, a private in Co. 21 155th Division. He passed away 8 Dec. 1926, surviving are his parents, 2 sisters, Mrs. Tillie Davis of Mole Hill & Mrs. Eva Lancaster of Wileyville; 4 brothers, John, Lloyd, Clate and Crate at home. He was a member of the Christian Church. He was laid to rest in the Springhill Cemetery.

John Dawson

John H. Dawson, 86, of Alma, died Friday, May 3, 1985 in Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville. He was a retired farmer and a Protestant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel in 1977; two brothers, and two sisters. Surviving are two brothers, Clate and Crate both of Alma; a sister, Tillie Davis of Tiltonsville. Friends were received at Furbee Funeral Home, Alma, where services were held Sunday, May 5,. Interment in Springhill Cemetery, Josephs Mills, WV.

Mrs. Crate Dawson

Mrs. Crate Dawson of Josephs Mills passed away at her home there Saturday night following a short illness. She began to complain on Friday in the later part of the day, but she did not become seriously sick until near 3:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon when her condition became serious and it continued to become worse until she passed away near 8:30 Saturday night. Dr. V.H. Dye, county coroner, was called on account of the suddenness of her death and he made an investigation and was satisfied that death resulted from natural causes. The condition of the body indicated that it might have been a case of acute appendicitis that resulted in a ruptured appendix. Mrs. Dawson was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McCune and she grew to womanhood in Centerville district. She was married to Crate Dawson who with a two year old boy and a three months old baby survive. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Riggs Memorial church in charge of Rev. Leonard Crew of the Centerville, U.B. church in charge. Burial was made in the cemetery near in charge of T.J. Sellers, Middlebourne funeral director.

Mollie Dawson

Mrs. Mollie Dawson Dies at Ross Run: Mrs. Mollie Dawson, 67, wife of Harrison Dawson died at her home on Ross Run near Josephs Mills at eight o'clock Wednesday {Sept. 17, 1941} morning of stroke. Mrs. Dawson, a daughter of Joseph W. and Barbara Stull Davis was born at Deep Valley, Tyler County, July 1, 1874. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by six children, Mrs. Eva Higgans, Wileyville; John D. Dawson, Josephs Mills; Lloyd B. Dawson, Mole Hill; Mrs. Kelly Davis, Dillonvale, Oh; Clate and Crate, twin sons at home. The funeral will be held in Springhill Chapel by Rev. J.S. Sarver, pastor of the Wick Methodist Church at two o'clock Friday afternoon, Sept. 19. Interment will be in Springhill Cemetery.

Zelma Duff

Mrs. Zelma Duff: Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Zelma M. Duff, a native of Tyler County, which occurred in the Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa {on April 3, 1965}. She was the daughter of the late Rymer and Missouri Ankrom, and taught school at the Cove and New Cumberland Schools and at the time of her death, was a member of the teaching staff of Pughtown School, Hancock County. She was a graduate of Marshall University. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Keith of Harrisville, and Mrs. S.B. Ayer of Washington , D.C.; and a brother, Guy Ankrom of Alma. Her husband, Virgil Duff preceded her in death in 1954. A sister, Mrs. Hattie Clark is also deceased. Mrs. Duff was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where Requiem High Mass was conducted at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The Rt. Rev. Father Eugene Jacobs officiated. Interment was made in the Beechwood Cemetery at Alma.

Charles Randall Ferrell

Ferrell, Charles Randall, 81 of Middlebourne, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998 in Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville. He was a retired employee of PPG Industries, Natrium and a member of Elk Fork Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Winifred Mercer Ferrell, in 1971; his parents, John Ross and Rosa Carroll Ferrell; and two brothers. Surviving are his wife, Loma Willey Ferrell; three sons, Lee A., Richard J., and Charles R., all of Middlebourne; two daughters, Mrs. John {Roetta} Underwood and Darcey Ferrell both of Middlebourne; a brother, Norman Ferrell of Middlebourne; a sister, Sara Jane Scott of Woodbine, Ga; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren. Friends received 7-9 p.m. today at Furbee Funeral Home, Middlebourne, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Firday. Interment in Middlebourne Cemetery.

Billy Gene Gatrell

Billy Gene Gatrell, 19 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gatrell, died Tuesday morning at 5:20 o'clock at the home on McCoy Heights after an illness of only a few hours. She is survived by her father and mother and two sisters, Betty Ruth and Ethel Bell. Funeral services were held this afternoon (Thursday) at 1:00 o'clock from the home with Rev. F.S. Harper officiating. Interment was in Victory cemetery on Indian Creek. 1943

Robert E. Goodfellow

Robert E. Goodfellow, 68, of Sistersville, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998 at home. He was a retired construction worker, a member of Sistersville Baptist Church and an Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Archer Goodfellow; a son, Daniel Joseph; his parents, William J. and Faye Beaver Goodfellow, Sr., Surviving are his wife, Jane Hunter Goodfellow; a son, David of Pursley; two daughters, Kay Steward of Pursley and Stacey Carney of Paden City; a brother, William Jr. of Pursley; a sister, Marilyn Flynn of Friendly; two adopted sisters, Connie Sapp of Sistersville and Ann Stoddard of Oregon; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren. Friends received 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9- p.m. Sunday at Myers Funeral Home, Sistersville, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville.

Viola Gorrell

Mrs. Viola Gorrell, 85, died at 3:15 a.m. Monday, at the home of her son, Bryson Allen, Jewett, R.D. 1, following an extended illness. She was born December 13, 1858 in Green County, Pa; a daughter of Orin C. and Sarah Phillips Cathers. She was married to Winfred C. Allen, who died in 1907. She later married Archer Gorrell, who died in 1918. Surviving are five children, Loy O. Allen, RD 2, Sistersville; Mrs. Ora Mount, Adena; Mrs. Ross Gardener, Carrollton; Harry Allen and Bryson Allen, Jewett; also 22 grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. Frank Hatfield, Amsterdam; Mrs. Lucy Thorn, Canton; and Mrs. Jesse Ullom, Elwood City, Pa; Funeral services were held Monday at the home. Interment was at Sistersville. 1943

Charles W. Gregg

Charles W. Gregg: He was descendant of pioneer families; had been ill four years. Funeral services were conducted from the Sellers Funeral Home here Saturday afternoon for Charles Wesley Gregg, 79, retired farmer who died at his home in the Jug community Thursday morning at 3:15. He had been in ill health for the past four years and had been seriously ill the past six weeks. Rev. W.W. Sutton, pastor of the Middlebourne Methodist Church was in charge of rites. Burial was made in the Gregg-Wells family cemetery in Wellsview, near Middlebourne. Mr. Gregg was a son of John Ingram and Virginia Wells Gregg, born in the Jug, May 14, 1863. He was twice married, first to Miss Eva May Crumrine, July 1, 1886, who died Jan. 26, 1910. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. G. Clair Ross of Salem and a son Layman B. Gregg of Clarksburg. The second marriage was to Miss Mary Hill Reppard, July 17, 1914 who survives as does a brother, W.D. Gregg, and a sister, Mrs. M.H. Berkley all of Route One. Mr. Gregg was a descendant of two pioneer Tyler County families. WELLS, first settlers of Sistersville, and GREGG'S of the Jug community. He spent his entire life in this county except a period of six years when he resided in Salem. He began his work life as a printer in the Star in Middlebourne where he rose to be foreman of the shop for several years. Later he became a conductor for the Tyler Traction Company on the cars between Middlebourne and Sistersville. Later he moved to his farm on Route 18, two miles East of Middlebourne. In his youth he became a member of the M.E. Church, was a member of the official board of the local church and was active in Sunday school work. 1943

Olive E. Hammond

Hammond, Olive E., 77, of 101 Eddy Lane, Pursley Community, Sistersville, died Jan. 29, 1998 at the Sistersville General Hospital, Sistersville. She was born in Pursley on May 1, 1920 the daughter of Melvin and Fay Barker Wagner. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by one brother, Otis Wagner. Surviving are her husband, Woodrow L. Hammond; two sons, Roger Hammond of Hannibal, Ohio and Kenneth Hammond of Sistersville; one brother, Layman Wagner of Canton, Ohio; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Friends were received at Myers Funeral Home in Sistersville on Jan. 31. Services were held Feb. 1 at the funeral home with the Reverend Roger Yost officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery in Sistersville.

Howard H. Hill

Councilman dies at 71: Howard H. Hill, 71, of Sistersville died November 14, 1996 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. He was a member of the Sistersville First United Methodist Church, a WW II Army Air Corp Veteran, and retired from PPG Industries, New Martinsville. He was a member of the BPOE #333, Sistersville; VFW Post 6327, Sistersville; and American Legion Post 67, Sistersville. At the time of his death he was a Sistersville City Councilman. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Martha Roberts Hill. He is survived by his wife, Martha Jean Johnson Hill; one daughter; Theresa Drain of Sistersville; his stepmother, Charlotte Zinn Hill of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Frances Webb of Sistersville and Joyce Gerber of Brandenton, Fl; one grandson, Craig Drain of Arlington, Va; one granddaughter, Debra Drain of Sistersville. Services were held Saturday, November 16, 1996 at Myers Funeral Home, Sistersville. An Elks Memorial Service was held Friday, November 15, 1996. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville.
