Arthur G. Mason

Services Held For First Tyler Drowning Victim: Services were held last Sunday in the Fairview church and interment was made in the church Cemetery, for little Arthur Gorman Mason, the seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gorman E. Mason of Canton, Ohio. The boy was visiting his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. George L. Mason of Middlebourne Star Route. The drowning took place last Saturday afternoon, the first in Tyler County during the season. Accompanied by his parents the youngster had gone to the lake for a swim early Saturday afternoon. Witnesses said he had an inflated inner tube and apparently had floated to a point where the water was too deep, when suddenly he lost his grip on the tube and disappeared before anyone could go to his assistance. The body was recovered two hours later.

Carrie Mason

Mrs. Carrie Mason passed away 28 April 1929. Caroline Crumrine Mason was born in Washington Co., Pa. 18 March 1848, a daughter of John & Lydia Horn Crumrine. She came to Tyler with her parents when they moved here and on 26 Sept. 1867 she was married to John A. Mason and located in the Mason home where she has since resided. To this union were 3 children, Maria Abagail who died in infancy, Laura Morris who passed away several years ago and Mrs. Lydia Huth who has lived with her and cared for her. She is survived by her husband and daughter and by half sisters, Mrs. Courtney and Mrs. Clara A. Jemison of this place and half brother, John Crumrine of Southside. Her brother Isaiah and her joined the U.B. Church many years ago. Interment in the Greenwood Cemetery.

George Mason

Mason, George, 92, of Rt. 1 Middlebourne, died at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at a Worthington, WV, nursing home. He was born May6, 1876 at Bearsville in Tyler County, son of James P. and Martha Ankrom Mason. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Fairview Methodist Church. Survivors include his widow, Myrtle Pierpoint Mason; three sons, Levi and Arden of Canton, Ohio and Gorman of Massillon; two daughters, Mrs. Esthlene Riggs and Mrs. Margaret Dawson, Middlebourne; 17 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. One son and one daughter preceded him in death. Friends received at Furbee Funeral Home, Alma. Services at 2 p.m. Friday at the Fairview Church with Rev. Stanley Moore officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery.

James P. Mason

James P. Mason, 90, passed away Sept. 1932 after several weeks illness. He was the son of George & Maria Mitchell Mason and is survived by a brother, John A. Mason of near the Jug. He was first married to Martha Ankrom, who died many years ago, leaving two children. His second marriage was to Margaret Ankrom of this place, who with his 2 children, Mrs. Lizzie Fox & George L. Mason survive him. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.

John A. Mason

John A. Mason, one of the most widely known residents of Tyler County, died at his home on the Middlebourne Road, opposite the Jug on Middle Island Creek. He was 94 years old. He was the last surviving son of pioneer residents, George and MAriah Mitchell Mason, who came from Greene County, Pa in 1839. He was born near Middlebourne April 18, 1845. He was a farmer and stockman. His grandfather, James Mason came in 1785 from County Turone, Ireland to Greene County. He was united in marriage Sept. 26, 1867 to Miss Caroline Crumrine, who died April 23, 1929. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Jay Huth. Another daughter Miss Laura Mason, preceded him in death. Services were held at the Sellers Funeral Home in Middlebourne and interment made in Greenlawn cemetery near that place. 1939

Myrtle E. Mason

Myrtle E. Mason, 100, of Magnolia Manor Nursing Home, Sistersville, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 1984 at the nursing home. The daughter of the late Joseph and Sadie Stump Pierpoint, she was born Sept. 8, 1883 in Stumptown, Gilmer Co, WV. She was a member of the Fairview Methodist Church, Alma. She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Mason in 1968 and by a son and a daughter. Surviving are three sons, Levi Mason of Canton, Ohio, Arden of Minerva, Oh and Gorman of Peoria, AR.; two daughters, Esthlene Riggs of Middlebourne and Margaret Dawson of New Martinsville. 17 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 23 great great grandchildren. Friends were received at the Furbee-Goodwin Funeral Home, Middlebourne, where services were held Friday, Aug. 31. with the Rev. Charles L. Parrish officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Alma.

Elsie Maxine Miller

Miller, Elsie Maxine; age 64 of Pursley, Wv died Jan. 20, 1993 at Pursley, WV; Born New Martinsville, WV March 21, 1928; d/o Andrew & Ella Noland Hammel; w/o June E. Miller; 2 sons: George E. Miller of Sistersville, WV; Terry E. Miller of Elkins, WV; 2 daughters, Mrs. Robert (Paulette) Christen of Sistersville and Mrs. Edwin (Nancy) Keys, Jr. of Sistersville, WV; 2 brothers, Leonard "Pete" Hammel of Paden City, WV and John Hammel of Middlebourne, WV; 3 sisters, Ruth Anderson of New Martinsville, WV; Nila Cross of Wallace, WV and Irona Lane Ebert of Paden City, WV. 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville, WV.

Marshall Pierpoint

Marshall Pierpoint passed away at Alma, he was truly the Villiage Blacksmith, since a young man he has worked at his shop and was an honest, fair dealing citizen. He came from an old family of Middlebourne. His grandfather, Clark Pierpoint, who was a cousin to Governor Pierpoint, lived in a house a short distance this side of the Haddox home and Marsh's father owned and lived in the house this side of that one at the end of the narrows now owned by G.W. Smith and in that house Marshall Pierpoint was born in 1861, a son of the late Francis and Rebecca Crombie Pierpoint, later the family moved to Alma. In 1887 he and Dora Morris were married and to this union were 3 daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Stealey who died some years ago, Mrs. Blanche Meredith of Alma and Mrs. Hazel Burd of Clinton, Pa. and a son Rennie of Alma. His wife died a number of years ago and later he married Elizabeth Kacher of German Ridge, who survives him. There are 8 grandchildren and sisters, Mrs. Ann Smith of Middlebourne, Mrs. Meade Furbee of Pennsboro and Mrs. Dosia Underwood of Clarksburg and brothers, Leroy Pierpoint of Alma and Reed Pierpoint of Sapulpa, Okla. Interment was in the Pierpoint Cemetery.

Salinda Ann Pierpoint Mason

Salinda Ann Pierpoint Mason, widow of the late Shadrach M. Mason, died on the Mason homestead on Foster's Run, Centerville district, Wednesday, aged 85. She was the daughter of William & Elizabeth Pierpoint and was born on 2 Oct. 1841 at Morgantown, WV and came to Tyler County with her parents who settled on what is known as the Billy Pierpoint farm on Sancho Creek and now owned by O.J. Hill. She and Shadrach M. Mason were married 11 Aug. 1861. Of the children born to this union, 4 survive, Mrs. Rosa Foutz of Reedy, Wirt Co., WV; Mrs. Edith Scarbrough and Miss Clara at home and Elizabeth at the Weston hospital. Mrs. Mason's husband died 13 April 1920 aged 81 years. She was converted in the old log Protestant Methodist Church know Davis Chapel at the mouth of Foster's Run. She is also survived by her brothers, Larken Pierpoint of Washington state, John Pierpoint of Oregon, Orland of Miniature, Neb. and Martha Corden of Portland, Ore. The interment was in the Fairview Cemetery by the side of her husband.

Ernest Monroe

Ernest Monroe, 70, of Alma, died Wednesday, Feb. 8 in the Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville. He was a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Victoria Davis Monroe; a daughter, Edna of Alma; a stepson, Dr. Donald E. Riggs of Phoenix; three grandchildren. Friends received at Furbee Funeral Home, Alma, where services were held Friday, Feb. 10. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Alma.

Carl Morgan

Carl Morgan, son of Guy G. & Mary Allen Morgan was born 14 Oct. 1900 and died from injuries from an automobile accident, 11 Oct. 1926. He is survived by his parents, sisters, Gladys and Mrs. Creel Carse and brother, Wodrow at home, and uncle, Myers Morgan and Aunt Miss Fay Morgan of Oklahoma. He was a member of the Meadeville M.E. Church, the Masonic Lodge at Hebron, WV and the Sistersville Chapter of Knights of Templars. The interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery at Sistersville.

Sarah M. Nolan

Mrs. Sarah M. Nolan, widow of Alfred Nolan, died in the Sistersville General Hospital Monday morning at 10 o'clock of pneumonia, which developed after Mrs. Nolan fractured a hip bone in a fall about two weeks ago. She was a daughter of the late Justice and Martha Postlethwait of Wetzel County. At the time she was injured she was living with her son, Ross Nolan at Dale, in Tyler County. Mrs. Nolan was a member of the Church of Christ at Dale. Surviving are the following children: Festus and A.C. Nolan, of Asher, Okla; Ross and G.A. Nolan at Dale; Miss Irene Nolan at Jacksonburg and M.C. Nolan of Michigan. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Dale Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Dale Cemetery in charge of Stathers and Furbee Funeral Directors. 1937

Ila Schau Peake

Peake, Ila Schau, 74, of Fifth Avenue, Sistersville, died Monday in Evans, Ga. She was a retired registered nurse at Sistersville General Hospital and a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Sistersville. She was preceded in death be her husband, Ralph A., in 1992; her parents, Wallace and Daisy Haudenschield Schau; a brother; a sister. Surviving are a son, Allan of Augusta, Ga; a daughter, Kathryn I. Putt of Evans; three grandsons, Chris Putt of Martinez, Ga, Matt Putt of Augusta and Jason Putt of Evans; two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including George Hubbard of Cambridge, MD., Ann Dalrymple of Sistersville and Kay Hunter of Vanceboro, NC. Friends received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Sistersville. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Episcopal Church. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Oncology Department.

Charles Porter

Charles Porter, 68, of Middlebourne, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998 at Sistersville General Hospital. He was born in Dothen, Alabama, a son of the late William and Ila Taylor Porter. He is a retired employee of the W.Va. Department of Highways. He was a Protestant. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Yost Porter and a son Paul of Middlebourne; three sisters, Hazel, Molly and Daisy all of Ft. Myers, Fla. Services were held on Monday at Furbee Funeral Home, Middlebourne with the Rev. Daniel A. Deem officiating. Interment in Wolf Pen Cemetery, Middlebourne.

Milred G.Sole

79 of Fair Street Middlebourne, Died Wednesday, july 28th 1999 in Wetzel County Hospital. Friends recieved 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Furbee Funeral home, Middlebourne, where services will be held at 2 PM Friday interment in Long Cemetery Middlebourne.
