Alice H. Janes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Alice H. Janes, 92, of Morgantown, and formerly of Jones Spring, W.Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown.

Born March 8, 1905, in Charles Town, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Noah and Ella Roper Hale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Janes, in 1976.

She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School.

She was employed by Berkeley Woolen Co., for 20 years, as a burler. She also worked for C.H. Musselman Co.

She was a member of Tomahawk Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school.

She was a member of Back Creek Valley Senior Citizens Group; West Virginia Home Extension Group; and was a former Berkeley County Belle.

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Popovich of Morgantown and Joe Ann Knauss of Wilmington, Del.; eight grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Tomahawk Christian Church. The Rev. Jerry Holdman will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Visitation also will be Friday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Tomahawk Christian Church, Route 5, Box 168, Hedgesville, W.Va. 25427.

Joseph A. Kues

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Joseph Anthony Kues, 78, of Hedgesville, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born March 21, 1919, in Trenton, Ill., he was the son of the late Otto Kues.

His wife, Margaret Voltz Kues, died in 1988.

He was a retired computer operator at the IRS Center.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post 896.

He is survived by one daughter, Ruth Rainford of Fredericksburg, Va.; one son, Steven Kues of Hedgesville; 10 sisters and brothers; one granddaughter, Deborah Fucello of Woodbridge, Va.; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel. The Rev. William C. Crowe will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, Dec. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Kathryn L. Estep

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Kathryn L. Estep, 92, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born May 21, 1905, in Shenandoah County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Otis T. and Minnie Jones Estep.

She attended Independent Bible Church of Martinsburg; and was a member of New Testament Baptist Church in Hialeah, Fla.

She is survived by one son, James Tyler Jr. of Perry, Fla.; and one stepson, Robert L. Tyler of Annandale, Va.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Miami, Fla.

Friends may call today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Carrie M. Detrick

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Carrie Mae Detrick, 83, of Charles Town, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Sept. 19, 1914, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas William and Emma Jane Engle Dillow.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Leroy Detrick, in 1973.

She was a seasonal worker at C.H. Musselman Co., Inwood, W.Va.

She was a member of Assembly of God Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy D. Stone of Winchester, Va.; one brother, John W. Dillow of Charles Town; three grandchildren, Edward Stone Jr., George Stone and Wayne Stone; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Marie Stone, Rebecca Bayles and Hallie Dillow; three brothers, Thomas Dillow, Harvey Dillow and Chester Dillow; and one grandson, Ronnie Stone.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, 114 N. Mildred St., Ranson, W.Va. The Rev. James Boyce will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

William Howard Sr.

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - William "Bill" Howard Sr., 53, of Shenandoah Junction, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Feb. 20, 1944, in Antietam Furnace, Md., he was the son of Isabel Howard Fauble of Hagerstown and the late William Henry Howard.

He was employed with the maintenance department at Charles Town Races, Charles Town, W.Va.

He was a member of Mission Tabernacle, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sandy Longerbeam Howard; four sons, Curtis Wayne Howard and William C. Howard Jr., both of Hagerstown, Travis Wade Howard of Shenandoah Junction and Kevin Lee Howard, at home; six sisters, Nina Mae Lassiter of Fairberry, Ill., Virginia Minnick of Brunswick, Md., Peggy Jean Cornell and Linda Darlene Longerbeam, both of Hagerstown, Susan Kay Hite of Charles Town and Deborah Jo York of Cumberland, Md.; two brothers, Donald Eugene Howard and Robert Thomas Howard, both of Hagerstown; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mission Tabernacle, Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Lee R. Strickler Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Lutheran cemetery, Bolivar, W.Va.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry.

Robert D. Fearnow

PHOENIX - Robert Dawson Fearnow, 90, of Phoenix, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Eastern Star Nursing Home, Phoenix.

Born May 17, 1907, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late Guy and Sarah Dawson Fearnow. He was later raised by his uncle, Ira Braine Dawson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leone Haley Fearnow, in 1994.

Before completing high school, he contracted tuberculosis and was sent to a sanitarium near Chicago for treatment.

He began his career as a salesman and customer service representative at Howe B. Murdock Co., Miami, in 1940, and retired in 1969.

He and his wife were among the founding parishioners of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Miami. He assisted in relocating surplus military wartime buildings from Sebring, Fla., to Miami, to serve as the first parish buildings and church. In 1965, he converted to the Roman Catholic faith.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society.

He and his wife served as sponsors for Vietnamese refugees who immigrated to south Florida.

In 1984, he and his wife moved to Phoenix.

He is survived by two sons, John Fearnow of Herndon, Va., and William Fearnow of Phoenix; one sister, Jane Patton of Atlanta; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Greenway cemetery, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. John S. Ledford will officiate.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Marcus O. Netzke

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Marcus O. Netzke, 53, of Falling Waters, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at his home.

Born Dec. 11, 1943, in Springfield, Ill., he was the son of Roland and Clao Proska Netzke of Springfield.

He was employed as a maintenance mechanic by Caldwell Manufacturing.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Juanita Rauch Netzke; two daughters, Barbara Brown of Hagerstown and Linda Campanelli of Keedysville; two brothers, Robert Netzke of Danvers, Ill., and David Netzke of Springfield; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 W. Potomac St., Williamsport. Pastor Gregory Martin will officiate. Burial will be private.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Richard H. Gross Sr.

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Richard Hamilton Gross Sr., 77, of P.O. Box 136, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 4, 1920, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Edwin Lee and Eleanor Born e Gross.

He was employed as a driver by the Variety Shop, retiring in 1985. He previously was employed by WJEJ.

He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Lee Myers of Falling Waters, Virginia Mae Daniels of Hagerstown and Jo Ann Henson of Clear Spring; two sons, Richard H. Gross Jr. of Clear Spring and Edward Lee Gross of Martinsburg; one sister, Audrey Hope of Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Geneva Powell.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 127 Britner Ave., Williamsport. The Rev. David Sword will officiate. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport.
