George T. Hodges

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - George Thomas "Tom" Hodges, 79, a resident of Care Haven of Berkeley, and formerly of Shepherdstown, W.Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born Feb. 1, 1919, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., he was the son of the late Samuel Jarboe and Elizabeth Hall Hodges.

He attended Mount Saint Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Md.; and graduated from Wharton School of Business, Philadelphia.

He retired as a textile engineer and an economist.

He was a former member of Christ Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Harrisonburg, Va.

He is survived by two sons, George Thomas Hodges Jr. of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jonathan Briscoe Hodges of Miami, Fla.; grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Briscoe Hodges Ashton and Elizabeth H. DeHaven; a half sister, Mary Jo Reaves; and one brother, Samuel J. Hodges Jr.

Services will be Saturday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, Middleway, W.Va. The Rev. Edward Greene and the Rev. Stephen Cuff will officiate. Burial will be in Middleway Masonic cemetery, Middleway.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town, W.Va.

Memorial donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, c/o William Macoughtry, Route 1, Box 9, Summit Point, W.Va. 25446.

Frederick S. Small

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Frederick S. Small, 95, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Homewood Nursing Home, Williamsport.

Born Aug. 7, 1902, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Homer C. and Ella Siler Small.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Voorhees Small.

He was formerly employed at Interwoven Mills; and was former owner of Shepherdstown Lumber Co. and Martinsburg Motel.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Norma S. Hollida of Martinsburg; two grandchildren, Fred M. Hollida and Jill M. Clohan; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard H. Small; and one sister, Dorothy A. Small.

Services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Al Clipp will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 101 W. Martin St., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Charlottie S. Miller

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Charlottie Seyler Miller, 83, of Falling Waters, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at her home.

Born June 24, 1914, in Alma, Neb., she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Emma Gipe Seyler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Randolph Lee Miller.

She was an active member of Harmony United Methodist Church, was president of United Methodist Women and Adult Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by one daughter, Hope Aleta Miller of Falling Waters; one son, Edward Lee Miller of Greensburg, Pa.; one sister, Mabel R. Dyer of Holdredge, Neb.; one brother, Leo M. Seyler of Orleans, Neb.; two grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sylvia P. Walker and Viola Stewart; and two brothers, Johnnie Seyler and Herbert Seyler.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Harmony United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ray Roberson will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Memorial donations may be made to Harmony United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 115, Falling Waters, W.Va. 25419.

Palma Barnack

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Palma Barnack, 72, of Shepherdstown, and formerly of Bayonne, N.J., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born April 5, 1925, in Bayonne, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Alphonso and Maryann Melione Procida.

She was a graduate of Bayonne High School, Bayonne.

She retired from AGFA Co., Wilmington, Mass. Previously, she worked for RCA, Harrison, N.J. She also was a crossing guard in Harrison.

She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Shepherdstown. She was a member of Senior Owls Club.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Joseph J. Barnack; one daughter, Roberta V. Barnack of Reston, Va.; four sisters, Josephine Iacano of Westfield, N.J., Lucy Procida of Bayonne, Gloria Mack of Cranford, N.J., and Ann Zec of Colonia, N.J.; one brother, Martin Procida of Bayonne; and 14 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Alphonso Procida Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church, 23rd Street, Bayonne. Burial will be in Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, Arlington, N.J.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town, W.Va., where a vigil will held at 6:30 p.m.

There will be a viewing Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Migliaccio Funeral Home, 851 Kennedy Blvd., Bayonne, N.J.

Memorial donations may be made to Jefferson County Cancer Society, P.O. Box 40, Ranson, W.Va. 25438; or Jefferson County Chapter American Heart Association, c/o Robert D. Ott, 420 Forrest Ave., Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Wilbur A. Secrist

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Wilbur Allen Secrist, 76, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.

Born Dec. 26, 1921, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lester and Stella Butts Secrist.

He retired from W. Harley Miller Contractors.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Belle Barrett Secrist; three daughters, Joanna E. Yingling of York, Pa., Mary E. Kitchen and Sharon K. Armel, both of Martinsburg; two sons, Wilbur Everett Secrist of York and David W. Secrist of Martinsburg; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Clay Secrist.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Joseph D. Eversole will officiate. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran cemetery at Arden, with military graveside services by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gene R. Cushman

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Gene R. Cushman, 66, of Kearneysville, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at his home.

Born June 20, 1931, in Columbus, Kan., he was the son of the late Monroe and Lola Goldberry Cushman.

He served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force.

He retired as owner and operator of Cushman's Shoe Repair, Charles Town, W.Va.

He was a member of Charles Town Lodge, Loyal Order of the Moose.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Stuckey Cushman; one daughter, Sharon Cushman of Rockland, Mass.; two sons, Timothy Cushman of Hiram, Maine, and Thomas Cushman of Tuttle, Okla.; three brothers, Bill Cushman of Springfield, Miss., Monte Cushman of Blue Springs, Miss., and Paul Cushman of California; six stepdaughters; three stepsons; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Services and burial will be private.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Joanne P.D. Bower

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Joanne Pearl Davis Bower, 85, of Charles Town, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Integrated Health Services, Charles Town.

Born March 12, 1912, in Jackson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Cyrus Allen and Effie Chancey Davis.

She graduated from Parkersburg High School.

She worked in Parkersburg, W.Va., and then moved to Chicago in 1953. She retired in 1977.

She was a former member of Cathedral Parish of St. James in Chicago, and was on the altar guild and president of Episcopal Church Women. After returning to Parkersburg, she became a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. At the time of her death, she was a member of Zion Episcopal Church, Charles Town.

She is survived by one son, the Rev. John A. Bower of Charles Town; three sisters, Erma Davis Fouse of Belpre, Ohio, Naomi Davis Griffin of Columbus, Ohio, and June Davis Martin of Washington, W.Va.; one brother, Harold C. Davis of Parkersburg; and grandchildren.

A Eucharist of the Resurrection will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at Zion Episcopal Church, 300 E. Congress St., Charles Town. Burial will be in the Columbarium of Memorial Church of the Good Shepherd in Parkersburg, Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m.

A vigil will be held at Zion Episcopal Church Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may call at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Peterkin Conference Center, P.O. Box 853, Romney, W.Va. 26757.

Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.

Rose M. Long

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Rose Marie Long, 43, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at her home.

Born Sept. 30, 1954, in Cleveland, Tenn., she was the daughter of Alton and Priscilla Nickelson Knapp of Sanford, Fla.

She was a member of Galilean Baptist Church, where her husband was pastor.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, the Rev. William G. Long; one daughter, Heather Renae Long, at home; one son, Jonathon William Long, at home; two sisters, Kathy Knapp of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Becky Clark of Ashland, Ohio; one brother, Paul Knapp of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; five nieces; and two nephews.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Galilean Baptist Church in Shepherdstown. The Rev. Ernie Thompson and the Rev. Charles Gower will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Rose Long Memorial Fund of Galilean Baptist Church, c/o Mildred Frederick, 54 Woodcrest Drive, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.
