William R. Reyer Jr.

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - William Robert "Bill" Reyer Jr., 43, of Route 1, Box 73, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 30, 1954, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of Alice Mildred Bard Dick of Hagerstown, and the late William Robert Reyer Sr. He was the stepson of Larry A. Dick Sr. of Hagerstown.

He was employed as a foreman for Steve A. Clapper Associates in Frederick, Md., and previously was employed by Tri-State Roofing in Hagerstown.

He was of the Brethren faith.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 694, Hagerstown.

He is survived by his life partner of 25 years, Bonita K. Delauter of Falling Waters; two sons, Jeff L. Delauter of Williamsport, and Scott W. Reyer, at home; one sister, Liz A. Kitchen of Funkstown; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Kenneth Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Friends may call Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to Williamsport Ambulance Service, 30 W. Salisbury St., Williamsport, Md. 21795.

Sarah L. Nowak

BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Sarah Louise Nowak, 80, of Bunker Hill, and formerly of Valhalla, N.Y., died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at her son's home.

Born Sept. 23, 1917, in Rock Lake, N.D., she was the daughter of the late Walter Coiner Eller and Leaton Rivers Gleeson Eller.

Her husband, Otto John Nowak, died in 1971.

She was a 1936 graduate of Hannibal High School, and continued her education and career at Missouri Baptist Hospital.

She retired from New York Telephone Co., where she was a nurse from 1963 to 1976.

She served with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II in North Africa and Italy.

She was a member of Pembroke Baptist Church in Pembroke, Ky.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Kaess of Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; three sons, John Nowak of Hopkinsville, Ky., Eugene Nowak of Bunker Hill, and Mark Nowak of South Portland, Maine; one sister, Joan Moore of Birkenau-Hornbeck, Germany; one brother, Billy Eller of St. Louis; and 13 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at Mount Pleasant cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y. The Rev. Patrick Robinson will officiate.

The family will receive friends today at Clark Funeral Home in Yorktown Heights.

Lola M. Spee

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Lola Marie Spee, 96, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at her home.

Born May 16, 1901, in Westernport, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles T. VanPelt and Amanda F. Saville VanPelt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Spee.

She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and the Women's Sodality group.

She is survived by one son, Donald VanPelt of Hanover, Pa.; one niece, Delores E. Carpenter of Martinsburg, with whom she resided; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Viola VanPelt and Nellie VanPelt Carpenter; and one brother, Elmer VanPelt.

Services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Brian Shoda will officiate. Burial will be in Philos cemetery in Westernport, Md., at a later date.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m., with a wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Durward G. Apple Jr.

CHERRY RUN, W.Va. - Durward Grafton "Bub" Apple Jr., 76, of Cherry Run, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Dec. 1, 1921, in Warfordsburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Durward Grafton Apple and Mary Katherine Mills Apple.

He worked as a mechanic for J&L Limestone Quarry and Riverton Corp. before retiring.

He served in the U.S. Army from April 1945 to December 1946.

He was a member of Cherry Run United Methodist Church.

He also was a member of Berkeley Post 14 American Legion in Martinsburg.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Starliper Apple, whom he married Dec. 24, 1941; one daughter, Marna B. Cokley of Martinsburg; one son, Grafton M. Apple of Martinsburg; three sisters, Catharine E. Burleson, Reta L. Williamson and Anna M. Baker, all of Hagerstown; one brother, Emanuel T. Apple of Hagerstown; three grandsons; one granddaughter; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Dan Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Snyder's cemetery, W.Va. 9, Morgan County, W.Va., with military graveside services conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896, VFW and Berkeley Post 14, American Legion in Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Marie E. Mason

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Marie Evangeline Mason, 70, of Charles Town, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Homewood Home, Williamsport.

Born Feb. 21, 1927, in Eden, Idaho, she was the daughter of the late Emil and Lena Petersen Martens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Page Mason, in 1987.

She retired in 1990, after 35 years of service as a registered nurse in the Obstetrics Department at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

She was a member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of Women of the Church.

She served as a second lieutenant with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

She is survived by three children, Jeanne M. Polen and Marcia A. Householder, both of Charles Town and Kevin V. Mason of Dallas; one sister, Emilena Meyerhoff of Eden; three brothers, Herman Martens of Eden, Rudolph Martens of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Randolf Martens of Seattle; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Eunice Jones; and two brothers, Winfred Martens and Ulrich Martens.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Charles Town Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William Everhart will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town.

John A. Woodward

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - John A. Woodward, 83, of Hedgesville, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Dec. 19, 1914, in Rappahannock County, Va., he was the son of the late Booten J. and Alberta Sisk Woodward.

He was a retired dairy farmer. He also retired from Berkeley County schools, having been a custodian at Martinsburg High School.

He was a member of Full Gospel Pentecostal Church at Four Mile Woods, W.Va.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jenkins Woodward; four daughters, Doris W. Eisel of Broad Run, Va., Daisy Huff of Martinsburg, W.Va., Susie Coffey and Alice Deal, both of Boston, Va.; two sons, Rosser Jenkins of Chiefland, Fla., and Clarence William Jenkins of Gainesville, Fla.; one sister, Viola Haines of Amissville, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Full Gospel Church, Four Mile Woods. The Rev. Raymond E. Jones will officiate. Further services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church, Amissville. The Rev. Clyde R. Woodard will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Jeffersonton, Va.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Frances E. Tusing

BOLIVAR, W.Va. - Frances Ethel Tusing, 73, of 1164 Washington St., died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born July 19, 1924, in Bolivar, she was the daughter of the late Harry Thornton and Ethel Marie Staubs Longerbeam.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Oscar Tusing, in 1966.

She worked at the Bureau of Standards and National Geographic Society, Washington, D.C.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

She was a member of Miriam Chapter 23 of the Order of the Eastern Star at Washington, D.C.; Ladies Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1136 of Brunswick, Md.; Women of Moose Home Chapter 0 of Mooseheart, Ill.; and Harpers Ferry-Bolivar Lions Club.

She was active with and a director of Jefferson County Committee on Aging and later volunteered for the Council on Aging, providing meals and programs at Bolivar Community Center. She served more than 10 years as recorder and secretary, and at the time of her death was treasurer of the Bolivar Town Council.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Edward Tusing of Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Charles David Tusing of Harpers Ferry; one sister, Edith Ott of Kensington, Md.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Jackson; and one brother, Harry Longerbeam Jr.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Richard E. Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Lutheran cemetery, Bolivar.

The family will receive friends Sunday and Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to Bolivar Park Fund, P.O. Box 37, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. 25425.

Charles E. Rennie

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Charles Edward Rennie, 66, of Harpers Ferry, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 1, 1932, in Eckhart, Md., he was the son of the late John Francis and Catherine Wright Rennie.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann Long Rennie; and by his second wife, Virginia Trask Rennie.

He was a retired master sergeant with the U.S. Army; and a retired intarsia woodworker and carver.

A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member of Berlin Post 123 American Legion, Berlin, Md.; and VFW Post 7422, Millsboro, Del.

He is survived by one daughter, Robin Lorraine Rennie of Albany, Ore.; two sons, John E. Rennie and Charles F. Rennie, both of Harpers Ferry; six stepdaughters, Rhonda Wilson of North Carolina, Cookie Vogel and Candy Day, both of Maryland, Rose Melcher and Faith Lafferty, both of Delaware, and Barbara Heustess of Pennsylvania; two stepsons, Timothy Christenson of Maryland and Edward Trask of West Virginia; one sister, Laura Stevens of Eckhart, Md.; seven grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William David Rennie; and a stepson, Eugene Trask.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Daniel L. Montague III will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg, W.Va.

The family will receive friends today and Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
