Rettie M. Frazier

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Rettie Mae Frazier, 83, of Harpers Ferry, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Feb. 21, 1914, in Hancock, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Lee and Alice Mullins Ferguson.

She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church, Glenwood, Md.

She was a housewife.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Robert Harrison Frazier, whom she married April 18, 1933; three sons, L.C. Frazier and James R. Frazier, both of Harpers Ferry, and Eugene Frazier of Clarksville, Md.; one sister, Roxie Trent of Tazewell, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ova Hensley; and a brother, Blucher Ferguson.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Sharon Baptist Church, Glenwood. Pastor Billy Phebus will officiate. Burial will be in Sharon Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, 114 N. Mildred St., Ranson, W.Va.

Memorial donations may be made to Sharon Baptist Church, Glenwood, Md. 21738.

Phyllis L. Wills

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Phyllis L. Wills, 61, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.

Born Aug. 22, 1936, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Berkeley C. and Martha E. Barney VanGosen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Wills, in 1982.

She was formerly employed as a waitress by VFW Post 4019, American Legion Post 60 and Moose Chapter 1311. She also had worked for Interwoven Mills, Berkeley Springs.

She was a member of American Legion Post 60 Auxiliary, Risinger-Stotler VFW Post 4019 Auxiliary and Women of the Moose Chapter 1311.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Diane Wills Smith of Hancock; one stepdaughter, Charlene Kefauver of Knoxville, Tenn.; one son, Eddie "Tex" Wills of Berkeley Springs; four sisters, Ethel Bent of Baltimore, Emma Jean Oyerly, Betty Burton and Nancy Havermale, all of Berkeley Springs; five brothers, Richard VanGosen of Baltimore, Eldridge "Pete" VanGosen, Clyde VanGosen and Ronald VanGosen, all of Berkeley Springs, and Larry VanGosen of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Wills; one sister, Willadean VanGosen Courtney; and one brother, Robert Donald "Bob" VanGosen.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Hennis Fox will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory, c/o Linda D. Smith, 3304 Resley Road, Hancock, Md. 21750.

Roger L. Beard

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Roger Lee Beard, 47, of Martinsburg, died recently in Hedgesville, W.Va.

Born Feb. 8, 1950, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of Wanda Rodgers Beard of Martinsburg and the late Lester Lee Beard.

He was a 1968 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

He was employed by the Internal Revenue Service.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a member of Independent Bible Church, Martinsburg, where he was a deacon for 15 years. He was a Sunday school and youth group teacher and a member of the choir.

He was a public address announcer for Martinsburg High School basketball games.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sharon Mason Beard; one daughter, Melissa Joy Beard, at home; two sons, Brian Lee Beard of Martinsburg and Matthew Lee Beard, at home; one brother, Gary W. Beard of Westminster, Md.; and grandmother, Marie Hunter Rodgers of Martinsburg.

Graveside services will be today at 1 p.m. at Rosedale cemetery, Martinsburg.

Memorial services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Independent Bible Church, Martinsburg. The Rev. Mark Johnson will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to Independent Bible Church Building Fund, Route 6, Box 403, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Arrangements are Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Dorothy M. Burkhart

JONES SPRING, W.Va. - Dorothy Mildred Dick Burkhart, 80, of Jones Spring, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at her home.

Born Nov. 25, 1917, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Oscar Mervil and Mary May Files Dick.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Flagg Burkhart, whom she married Dec. 10, 1940.

She was a 1935 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

She was a seasonal employee of C. H. Musselman Co.; and was employed at the former Emmert's Department Store.

She was a member of Back Creek Valley Full Gospel and Jones Spring Calvary Bible Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Ida Beth Miller of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Dorothy M. Snow of Jones Spring; four sons, Raymond Flagg Burkhart II and Timothy Kent Burkhart, both of Jones Spring, Oscar Dick Burkhart of Shanghai, W.Va., and David Benjamin Burkhart of Shanks, W.Va.; two sisters, Mary C. Whitacre of Whitacre, Va., and Emma L. Watson of Charles Town, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Oscar M. Dick Jr.; one sister, Thelma A. Spitzer; an infant son; and two great-granddaughters, Alexea Rose Miller and Alexis Beth Miller.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Central Chapel Church. The Rev. Lester Kisner and the Rev. Kenny Burkhart will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Elmer Walker Jr.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Elmer Walker Jr., 72, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born Jan. 18, 1926, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Elmer and Mary Virginia Clark Walker Sr.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

He retired as a cook from Shenandoah Hotel; and Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.

He is survived by one daughter, Brenda D. Dozier of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; one son, Charles E. Walker of Martinsburg; four sisters, Rebecca Washington and Helen Fox, both of Martinsburg, Beatrice Carter and Jeanette Warden, both of Harrisburg, Pa.; one brother, Fulton Walker Sr. of Martinsburg; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, James Walker.

Services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Nathaniel Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family will meet Monday at 2:20 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dorothy G. Davis

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Dorothy George Davis, 80, of Eastland, Charles Town, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born May 23, 1917, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Preston George and Rachel Edna Bushey George.

She was a homemaker.

She was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Charles Town, where she was a member of Asbury United Methodist Women of the Church; Asbury Church Couples Fellowship; and United Methodist Women's Circle 1.

She was a member of GFWC Charles Town Woman's Club; Molers Cross Roads Extension Club; and Old Opera Guild, Charles Town.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Henry G. Davis Jr.; one son, Henry P. Davis of Thurmont, Md.; one sister, Nancy George Puddy of Germantown, Md.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Stephen G. Davis, in 1988.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, Charles Town. The Rev. James Chambly and the Rev. Dee-Ann Dixon will officiate. A service will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Cedar Hill cemetery, Suitland, Md.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town.

Memorial donations may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 110 W. North St., Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Linwood L. Markley Sr.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Linwood Lee Markley Sr., 73, of Little Georgetown Road, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 12, 1924, in Columbia Furnace, Va., he was the son of the late Russell A. and Anna Mary Dellinger Markley.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Markley.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

He retired from West Virginia State Road Department.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Shimp Markley; three daughters, Ruthie Butts and Lisa A. Butts, both of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Janet L. Miller of Inwood, W.Va.; four sons, David L. Markley, Kenneth C. Markley, Larry W. Markley and Linwood L. Markley Jr., all of Hedgesville; seven sisters, Betty Miller, Reba Wise and Linda Greenfield, all of Hedgesville, Helen Bohrer of Martinsburg, Mary Ann Dick of Glengary, W.Va., Catherine Faircloth of Inwood, W.Va., and Sharon Barrett of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; three brothers, Virgil E. Markley, Robert L. Markley and William David Markley, all of Hedgesville; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dennis Markley, Clifford Markley and Russell A. Markley Jr.; and an infant sister, Vivian R. Markley.

Services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Louise Bowen will officiate. Burial will be in Tomahawk cemetery, with military graveside services by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW; and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jakob E. Shelton

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Jakob Edward Shelton, infant son of Tina L. Shelton, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

He was born Feb. 3, 1998, in Morgantown.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his great-grandmother, Lucy Hatison of Martinsburg, W.Va.; grandparents, Carol Hatison Pierce of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Larry H. Shelton of Hedgesville, W.Va.; one aunt, Tara Shelton of Ranson, W.Va.; three great-aunts; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an uncle, Larry H. Shelton Jr.

Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant View Memory Gardens. The Rev. Robert W. Barnes will officiate.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.
