Eldon L. Day

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Eldon Lee "Buster" Day, 77, of Berkeley Springs, and formerly of Palmer Park, Md., died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs.

Born Dec. 31, 1920, in Edmond, W.Va., he was the son of the late Finice Little and Mamie Cutlip Day.

He attended public schools in Edmond.

He worked as a coal miner, prior to moving to Palmer Park. He worked with May's Brake Service and Air Brake and Control, both in Bladensburg, Md., retiring in 1977.

He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 22, 1942, until Sept. 8, 1945, and was honorably discharged with the rank of private first class. He was awarded the EAME Ribbon with four Bronze Stars.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Pearl Barker Day; two daughters, Carol Davis of Winona, W.Va., and Linda Ellen Odell of Berkeley Springs; three sons, Herbert Lee Day and Donald Wayne Day, both of Berkeley Springs, and Robert Allen Day of Front Royal, Va.; three sisters, Mary Hess of Clendenin, W.Va., Dema Sewell of Victor, W.Va., and Elizabeth Null of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one brother, Ervin Day of Brookes, Ky.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Bragg; and four brothers, Herman Day, Frank Day, Robert Day and William Day.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Henry L. Fisher will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway cemetery in Berkeley Springs with military graveside honors conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.

Memorial donations may be made to the building fund of South Morgan Volunteer Fire Department, Route 3, Box 159, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Steven T. Ottinger

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Steven Tipton Ottinger, 54, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Dec. 19, 1943, in Baltimore, he was the son of Crete Tipton Ottinger of Hagerstown and the late Paul Ottinger.

He was a 1962 graduate of North Hagerstown High School.

He was a retired insurance agent with Prudential Insurance Co.

He was a member of the former Lions Club in Falling Waters, W.Va.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Bryan T. Ottinger of San Francisco and Eric L. Ottinger of Morgantown, W.Va.; and three sisters, Paula Ottinger Bakry of Tacoma Park, Md., Gail Grove of Hagerstown and Janice Chippendale of Bedford, Pa.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 N. Eastern Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor Zuck will officiate.

The family will receive friends Saturday, a half hour prior to the memorial service.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 322 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or the American Lung Association, 1840 York Road, Timonium, Md. 21793.

William T. O'Neal

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - William Torrence O'Neal, 72, of Berkeley Springs, and formerly of Baltimore and Westminster, Md., died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at his home.

Born June 3, 1925, in Mann Township, Bedford County, Pa., he was the son of the late William Herbert and Zella Mae Wigfield O'Neal.

He attended Silver Mills School in Bedford County.

He worked as a machinist with Western Maryland Railway Co. from 1950 to 1954. He also worked as a machinist with Thompson Wire Co. from 1954 to 1969 and was promoted to maintenance foreman in 1964. From 1972 until his retirement in August 1987, he was a machinist with Malco Plastics in Garrison, Md.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from Nov. 2, 1945, until his honorable discharge with the rank of sergeant on Dec. 10, 1946. He was awarded the Philippine Independence Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. During his military service, he was educated at the AM School, Chevrolet Engine School and Boeing Aircraft/Electrician School.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, crabbing, gardening, golf and wine-making.

He was a member of Fairview Christian Church in Artemas, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Jeanette Earles O'Neal; one daughter, Donna Marie Reynolds of New Canaan, Conn.; one son, William Kelly O'Neal of Westminster; one stepdaughter, Sherry Lynn Trail of Chaneysville, Pa.; one sister, Celeste A. Crownover of Port Matilda, Pa.; two brothers, Arlie "Jack" Straub of Ludington, Mich., and Cranston Thomas O'Neal of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Marion A. Caldwell.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Fairview Christian Church, Pa. 26, Mann Township, Artemas. The Rev. Milton Morris will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends at the O'Neal residence in Berkeley Springs, today from 2 to 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401; or to Fairview Christian Church, c/o Leo Jay, RR1, Box 116, Artemas, Pa. 17211.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs.

Virginia R. Davenport

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Virginia Rebecca Davenport, 83, of Kearneysville, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Sept. 19, 1914, in Mechanicstown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Annie Jones Stanton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Davenport.

She retired from Musselman Fruit Co.

She was a member of King Apostle Holiness Church of God, Ranson, and was an active member of the women's group.

She was active with the Ranson Senior Center.

She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy J. Roberts of Camp Springs, Md., and Gladys L. Davenport of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three sons , Russell L. Davenport Jr. of Philadelphia, Raymond E. Davenport of Hyattsville and Randolf E. Davenport of Cumberland, Md.; four sisters, Agnus McDonald of Charles Town, W.Va., Mary C. Brooks of Middleburg, Va., Ruth Curry of Summit Point, W.Va., and Margaret Hollingsworth of Atlantic City, N.J.; four brothers, William Stanton of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, , Charles Stanton of Charleston, W.Va., Robert Stanton of Baltimore and Claude Stanton Sr. of Ranson; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Wilbur Davenport, John Henry Davenport and Paul Davenport; two sisters, Carrie Jackson and Anna Morris; three brothers, Clarence Stanton, Samuel Stanton and Thomas Randolf Jones.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at King Apostle Holiness Church of God. Bishop Eugene E. Baltimore will officiate. Burial will be Johnsontown cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson.

Joseph C. Smallwood

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Joseph C. Smallwood, 69, of Berkeley Springs, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 11, 1928, in Elk Creek, Va., he was the son of the late Claud A. Swanson Smallwood and Sallie Hazel Osborne Smallwood.

He was a retired truck driver.

He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II.

He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 4019.

He is survived by one son, John Smallwood of Bergen, N.J.; and one brother, Richard Smallwood of Elk Creek, Va.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Florence Wagner; and one brother, John Smallwood.

Graveside services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Culpeper National cemetery, Culpeper, Va. The Rev. Gordon George will officiate.

Viewing will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs. The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.

Edith M. Mauck

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Edith Melvina Mauck, 73, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Silver Age Services.

Born Feb. 8, 1925, in Jefferson County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Flora Boyer McGraw.

She had been employed with both A & P and Safeway supermarkets; and locally with the Berkeley County Planning Commission.

She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Jesse Willard Mauck; two sons, Jess W. Mauck Jr. at home and Kenneth E. Mauck of Martinsburg; one grandson; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. William E. Merki and the Rev. Frank S. Douty will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Caroline L. Evy

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Caroline L. Evy, 46, of Hedgesville, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at the home of her brother, John Bennett, in Williamsport.

Born Aug. 2, 1951, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Kathleen Atha Bennett.

She attended Hedgesville High School; and was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School, Mount Jackson, Va.

She was employed as a school bus driver for the Berkeley County School System.

She was a member of Calvary Temple Church of Williamsport.

She is survived by her husband, John Evy of Hedgesville; one daughter, Tonya Blosser of Falling Waters, W.Va.; one son, Shane Evy of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Janice Markley of Martinsburg and Patricia Boarman of Falling Waters; four brothers, John Bennett of Williamsport, Jerald Bennett and Harold Bennett, both of Lansdale, Pa., and Jack Bennett of Hagerstown; and two granddaughters.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Robert Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Roger L. Spring

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Roger Lee Spring, 29, of Charles Town, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, in Charles Town.

Born June 7, 1968, in Leesburg, Va., he was the son of Ward Loveless and Rosalee Dillow Spring of Charles Town.

He was a construction worker with S.W. Rogers in Manassas, Va.

He was of the Methodist faith.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Christina Lynn Spring and Cheryl Ann Spring, both at home; one brother, Ward Timothy Spring at home; paternal grandmother, Eva Cockrille of Kearneysville, W.Va.; and maternal grandmother, Dorothy A. Dillow of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fairview Lutheran cemetery in Bolivar, W.Va. The Rev. Lester W. Dillow will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are by Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry.
