Mary E. Butts

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary E. Butts, 84, of Martinsburg, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at her home.

Born Feb. 22, 1914, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John L. and Marie Timmons Brumbaugh.

She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Jack C. Butts, in 1994.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Brenda L. Plotner of Martinsburg, Mary Susan Taylor of Johnstown, Ohio, and Sister Melissa A. Butts of the Order of Dominican Sisters in Racine, Wis.; four sons, John L. "Jack" Butts, Robert W. Butts and Michael S. Butts, all of Martinsburg, and David T. Butts of Hagerstown; one sister, Catherine M. Grove of Martinsburg; one brother, John L. Brumbaugh of Berkeley County; 19 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Brumbaugh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Thomas Doyle as celebrant. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, 2060 Rosedale cemetery Road, Martinsburg. Sister Suzanne Baumgartner, D.C., will conduct a vigil service today at 7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Jennings Vanorsdale Sr.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Jennings "Leon" Vanorsdale Sr., 57, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.

Born April 5, 1940, in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late Ernest and Margaret Elizabeth Sybold Vanorsdale.

He attended Hancock High School.

He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves. He had served in the Morgan County Deputy Reserves, Berkeley Springs.

He worked as a carpenter in commercial construction.

He was a member of Hancock Church of God, Hancock.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rosa Lea Hovermale Vanorsdale; one daughter, Candy L. Vanorsdale of Berkeley Springs; four sons, Jennings L. Vanorsdale Jr. of Hedgesville, W.Va., Brock L. Vanorsdale, Tony L. Vanorsdale and Rusty L. Vanorsdale, all of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Betty Roach of Berkeley Springs and Roberta Iden of Hancock; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Charlene Hobday; and two brothers, Clarence Vanorsdale and Charles Vanorsdale.

Memorial services will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Hancock Church of God, 163 E. Main St., Hancock. Pastor Eugene Harne will officiate. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jennings Leon Vanorsdale Sr. Memorial Fund, Hancock Church of God, c/o Remona Weller, Treasurer, Route 2, Box 146, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Virginia S. Birkitt

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Virginia Shelly Birkitt, 91, of Charles Town, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born March 22, 1906, in Minersville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Wilson T. and Carrie Hunter Shelly.

She attended Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

She retired from Ranson Ice and Cold Storage, Ranson.

She was a member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church, Charles Town, where she was a former member of the choir and taught Sunday school.

She was a volunteer for Jefferson Chapter American Red Cross.

She is survived by two children, Dr. Glenn H. Birkitt of Leesburg, Va., and Sylvia Dawson of Manteo, N.C.; one brother, Earl Wilson Shelly of Inwood, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert H. Shelly.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Charles Town Presbyterian Church, Charles Town. The Rev. William Everhart will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town.

Memorial donations may be made to Charles Town Presbyterian Church, 220 E. Washington St., Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Helen R. Coulter

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Helen Rebecca Coulter, 78, of Shiloh, Charles Town, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Aug. 5, 1919, in Charles Town, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Bessie Henretty Roper.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther James "Coke" Coulter, in 1997.

She was a graduate of Charles Town High School.

She retired as a surgical technician at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Charles Town.

She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Jackson-Perk American Legion Post 71, Charles Town; and was a supporter of Charles Town High School sports.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia J. Milburn of Boyce, Va.; two sons, Luther James "Jimmy" Coulter Jr. of Charles Town and Jack R. Coulter of Aiken, S.C.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Franklin Roper and Joseph Roper.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town. The Rev. John Alfriend will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Vernon G. Close

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Vernon Glenwood Close, 88, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 24, 1910, in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late Ira E. and Beulah Idessa Widmyer Close.

His wife of 69 years, Elsie Pauline Frock Close, died in 1997.

He attended Mount Wesley School and Mount Cecil School, both in Morgan County, W.Va.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs, was a Sunday school teacher, church trustee and lay leader.

At the age of 12, he started working for a local orchardist, farmed and was a barrel maker. He was a contractor, landlord and entrepreneur until he was 75.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was on the Morgan County Board of Education from 1964 to 1972, and was president for several terms.

He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Close of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Dawn Massey of Williamsport; three sons, Leon Close of Martinsburg, W.Va., Thomas A. Close and Timothy B. Close, both of Berkeley Springs; one brother, Robert Close of Berkeley Springs; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 110 S. Green St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Owen B. Womack will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway cemetery in Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday for the convenience of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 110 S. Green St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411; or to Cedar Grove Christian Church, c/o Beverly Bard, HCR 80, Warfordsburg, Pa. 17267.

Angela M. Bryner

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Angela Maria Bryner, 45, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at her home.

Born Sept. 30, 1952, in Berkeley Springs, she was the daughter of Arthella J. Michael Ganoe of Hancock and the late Vernon E. Ganoe.

She was a 1970 graduate of Hancock High School. She earned her bachelor of science degree in 1974 from Frostburg State University, Frostburg, Md.; and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She was a music teacher for 22 years; and head of the Music Department with Morgan County Public Schools.

She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs.

She was a member of Morgan County Community Choir; and performed with Gospel Lamplighters.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Terry A. Bryner; one daughter, Shannon Barch of Berkeley Springs; one son, Sean L. Bryner at home; one sister, Kelly Ganoe of Ellicott City, Md.; one granddaughter; five nieces; one nephew; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Spohrs Crossroads, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Henry L. Fisher will officiate. Burial will be in Spohrs Crossroads cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs; and Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. The funeral home will be open today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.

Thelma L. Glesner

Memorial services for Thelma L. Glesner of 13785 Lower Edgemont Road, Waynesboro, who died Friday, March 6, 1998, will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Waynesboro Bible Church, 8216 Stottlemyer Road, Waynesboro. The Rev. Robert Fitz will officiate. Burial will be in Middleburg United Methodist Church cemetery, Middleburg, Md.

James E. Reid

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - James Edward Reid, 75, of 1004 Magnolia Lane, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born March 31, 1922, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Ralph Robert and Genevieve Thompson Reid.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II.

He was employed with Capital Milk Producers Cooperative.

He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, Gaithersburg, Md.

He was a member of VFW 896; Loyal Order of Moose 212; FOE 694; and AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Alice L. Reid; one daughter, Carolyn Mallett of Denver; three sons, Donald Reid of Poolesville, Md., Thomas Reid and Martin Reid, both of Gaithersburg, Md.; three stepdaughters, Carolyn Lilly of Germantown, Md., Susan Lescalleet of Big Pool, Md., and Joyce Geyer of Hagerstown; one stepson, Curtis Pietro of Hagerstown; one sister, Margaret Garrett of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Raymond Reid of Rockville; two grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandson.

He was preceded in death by one son, Alfred Reid; and one brother, Ralph Reid.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
