Ethel M.H. Chapman

RIPPON, W.Va. - Ethel Marie Heskett Chapman, 83, of Rippon, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at Shenandoah Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Charles Town, W.Va.

Born Jan. 6, 1915, in Kabletown, Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas S. and Anna C. Clipp Heskett.

Her husband, Paul Daniel Chapman, died in 1987.

She was a graduate of Berryville High School, Berryville, Va.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Rippon, where she served as church treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and member of the church choir and Episcopal Church Women.

She was a charter member, former president and treasurer of Rippon, W.Va., Home Extension Club. She was a member of Jefferson County Farm Bureau and Jefferson County Fair Association. She helped South Jefferson Ruritan Club and Jefferson County Fair with the annual chicken barbecue.

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Stolipher of Charles Town; one son, Paul Donald Chapman of Rippon; one sister, Virginia McDonald of Charles Town; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mazie Ware and Norma Shultz; and one brother, Harry Heskett.

Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. Edward Greene will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 129, Rippon, W.Va. 25441.

Elwood S. Johnson

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Elwood S. Johnson, 78, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Dec. 11, 1919, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry S. and Myrtle Bernhard Johnson.

He was a retired funeral director.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs.

He was a member of VFW Post 4019, Moose Lodge 1468, American Legion Post 60 and Junior Order United Auto Mechanics Council 117.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Bailey of Damascus, Md., and Debra Sena of Las Vegas; two sons, Elwood S. Johnson Jr. of Mechanicsville, Md., and Terry Lee Johnson of Williamsport; two sisters, Marguerite Boyd of Wheaton, Md., and Dianne Hofe of Jacksonville, N.C.; one brother, Dayton R. Johnson of Arlington, Va.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Elsie Dunkle; and three brothers, Calvin Johnson, Richard Johnson and Paul Johnson.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs.

The Rev. Owen Womack will officiate.

Burial will be in Greenway cemetery.

Viewing will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where a Junior Order service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Lynne K. Byron

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Lynne Kerwin Byron, of Windward Farm, Shepherdstown, formerly of Williamsport and Hagerstown, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

She was the daughter of the late Mildred Albaugh and Hugh Arthur Kerwin of Washington.

She was a graduate of the Madeira School, Greenway, Va. She attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia and was a 1988 graduate of Shepherd College.

She was a long-time member and past president of the Hagerstown Garden Club.

She served on the boards of Washington County Free Library, United States Pony Club Inc. and the Williamsport Museum and History Board.

She was chairwoman of the Washington County Committee of the Maryland Historical Trust and of the Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage.

She was a docent at the Historic Shepherdstown Museum and secretary of Jefferson County Historical Society.

She helped establish a branch of the Anglican Church, Province of Christ the King, in Marshall, Va.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, James Edgar Byron; two daughters, Sally Byron LaBarre of Bel Air, Md. and Katharine Devereaux Byron-Jones of Shepherdstown; two sons, James Edgar Byron Jr. and Keith Alexander Byron, both of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Gail Kerwin March of Virginia Beach, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of St. James School, St. James, Md. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Windward Farm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Hagerstown Garden Club in care of Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, City Park, Hagerstown, Md. 21740; to Washington County Historical Society, P.O. Box 1281, Hagerstown, Md. 21741; or to Jefferson County Historical Society, P.O. Box 485, Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Kenneth E. Merica

GREAT CACAPON, W.Va. - Kenneth Edward Merica, 63, of Great Cacapon, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 7, 1935, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of Alice Frances Henry Merica of Berkeley Springs, and the late Ray Jackson Merica.

He was a 1954 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.

He was employed by Dupont Chemical in Martinsburg from 1956 through 1958; Largent's Truck and Implement Center in Berkeley Springs as a parts manager; and Berkeley Club Bottling Co., Berkeley Springs.

He worked for Western Union as a lineman.

He and his wife owned Great Cacapon Service Station, and then Merica's Grocery, which they operated until 1972.

He was a bus driver for Morgan County schools from 1967 to 1974.

He was national sales manager for Ladder Towers Inc. in Lancaster, Pa.

In 1983, he founded Structural Fabrications Inc., a builder of aerial fire trucks, and was president and CEO until 1988.

He then was regional sales manager for Seagrave of Clintonville, Wis.

He retired in January.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member of Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Co., and served as fire chief.

He was president of Great Cacapon Ruritan Club and a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 42 years, Rose Zeta "Judy" Spriggs Merica; one daughter, Delilah Kay Merica of Lancaster; one sister, Patsy Ann Spielman of Berkeley Springs; one brother, Richard Henry Merica of Unger, W.Va.; three nieces; one nephew; two great-nephews; and one great-niece.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Jackson Merica Jr.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs.

The Rev. G. Edward Grove and the Rev. Roger E. Burtner will officiate.

Burial will be in Mount Nebo cemetery in Great Cacapon, with full military honors conducted by Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

James I. Feltner Jr.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - James Ira Feltner Jr., 86, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Born Nov. 4, 1911, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late James I. and Nellie Siler Feltner Sr.

He was a 1932 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

He retired from Corning Glassworks after 16 years. He was owner/operator of Queen Street Esso.

He earlier worked at Interwoven Mills. He worked as a carpenter in the Martinsburg area.

He was a member of the Winchester Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and an elder.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mildred Batten Feltner; four daughters, Nellie Faye Feltner Castleman at home, the Rev. Gertrude Raye Feltner Kapornyai of Oklahoma City, Ellen Louise Van DeMark of Martinsburg, and Sylvia Dawn Nowlin of Orlando, Fla.; one son, David Lee Feltner of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; three sisters, Elizabeth Small of Shenandoah Junction, and Bertha Aikens and Catherine Small, both of Martinsburg; one brother, Marion Feltner of Martinsburg; 21 grandchildren; and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by one brother, Robert Feltner.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Winchester Avenue Christian Church.

The Rev. Douglas J. Hollida will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, Rosedale cemetery Road, Martinsburg, and Saturday at 10 a.m. prior to service at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Winchester Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 412 Winchester Ave., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Richard Powers

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Richard Powers, 66, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at City Hospital.

Born June 22, 1931, he was the son of the late James P. and Mary Poole Powers.

He was a graduate of Beall High School in Frostburg, Md., and Potomac State College, Keyser, W.Va.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served in the Korean War and had two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He retired with the rank of master sergeant.

He was a retired air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration.

He was a private pilot.

He was a member of VFW, Mt. Savage, Md., the American Legion, Williamsport, the Short Wing Piper Club and the 167th NCO Club.

He is survived by his wife, Roxianne Deskin Powers; two sisters, Kathryn Parrish of Melbourne, Fla., and Rosemary Eirich of Cumberland, Md.; three brothers, Leo Powers and George Powers, both of Cumberland, and James Powers of Mt. Home, Idaho; one granddaughter, Taylor Martin; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, James W. Powers and Regis Powers.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Mt. Savage, and Wednesday, April 25, at noon, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.

Memorial donations may be made to your local Humane Society.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
